Community Helpers To Host Harvest Party BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

“We’re celebrating God’s goodness,” Debbie Zimmerman commented. “God takes care of us.” Zimmerman and other members of Living Stones Vineyard Church, 2292 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, have planned an outdoor harvest party on Saturday, Oct. 24. Members of the public are welcome to drop in any time between 3 and 6:15 p.m.

to enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment. A small display of fireworks will follow at dusk. In the event of rain on Oct. 24, the harvest party will be held from 3 to 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25. Community helpers are part of God’s goodness, Zimmerman noted, so the church has partnered with its neighbors, Wakefield Ambulance Association (WAA) and Robert Fulton Fire Company (RFFC), to See Harvest Party pg 6

rench fries, funnel cakes, milkshakes, and more. When the Solanco Fair last month was essentially canceled, the yearlong wait to enjoy the treats was extended for another year. Those who planned to attend the fair were disappointed. The organizations that prepared and sold the treats were dismayed. “There are a lot of nonprofits whose fundraising is done through the fair,” said fair board president Robert Lowery. “These nonprofits do good work, and we want to support them.” He explained that food and beverages sold on the three days of the fair provide the majority of the annual budgets for those groups. Thus, the fair board went back to the drawing board. “When we looked at the (livestock) auction, we didn’t want a lot of people to come in and hang out, so we provided food basically just for the exhibitors and bidders,” Lowery said. “We asked, ‘Everyone wants fair food, so why don’t we do an event in October where everyone can get it?’”

nonprofit organizations. Typically, the dairy bar is staffed by several local nonprofits, who share the proceeds, but the logistics of scheduling them were complicated, so the fair board opted to provide its own volunteers, Lowery said. In fact, milkshakes were not originally part of the menu. “We weren’t going to do milkshakes, but that was the first question people asked,” Lowery said. Proceeds from the dairy bar and kitchen will go to the Solanco Fair Association. “We’re very fortunate that we didn’t have a lot of expense by not holding the fair,” Lowery said. The premiums awarded to winning exhibitors are provided by the state, not the fair board. This year’s premium amounts are still undetermined, as the state has not released the funds. “We’ll send checks for premiums and the livestock auction when it all clears,” Lowery added. Fair Food Day will be held rain or shine. Attendees are asked to follow social distancing and wear masks as directed by state guidelines. All food service workers will wear

“Celebrate Recovery is not just for drugs and alcohol. It’s for anybody with a hurt, a habit, or a hangup who wants to work on whatever they need to work on while having a supportive group,” said Providence Church Celebrate Recovery (CR) leader Dannel Wissler. “When people come, rest, and learn, they grow. We sometimes call it ‘Monday night church in the basement.’”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American ags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is ďŹ nding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is ďŹ nding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania oers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC. Nearly every Monday evening for 10 years, Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence, has hosted a CR group meeting. More than 30,000 CR groups have been established around the country. “It’s a healthy faith environment where you can share and talk and just be real,” said CR leader Brad Duvall. He instigated the formation of the local group while in recovery with the Naaman Center. “The support group aspect is important,” Wissler added. “We’re not there to fix each other; we’re there to learn from each other.” Meetings typically follow an identical schedule. A meal is served, then children, teenagers, and adults gather in their respective classrooms. Lessons and games are provided for the youngsters. The adult meetings alternate each week between a testimony from someone who has made progress in their recovery and a lesson based on the 12 Steps and the Beatitudes from the Bible. Providence Church lead pastor Dwight Lefever has been part of the group since the beginning and often teaches the lessons. Prior to the shutdown in March, about 130 adults and children attended each week. “It’s a lot when you consider the average attendance of a church in the U.S. is 70. We never anticipated that, but we prepared ourselves,” Duvall commented. “The biggest shift came when we could minister to all age groups, including children, teens, and a fully staffed nursery.” Since March, CR has met via Zoom and now meets in person

in the Providence Church pavilion when weather permits. Guests are welcome to attend at any time and may meet the group in the main lobby at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays. From there, the attendees will go outside or be divided into small groups to converse inside. Wissler noted that the leaders are working out the logistics for safely serving meals again, and the children’s program will soon resume. “The church was really gracious in allowing us to start back up,” Duvall remarked. “We lost two people to addiction during the shutdown. We felt a sense of urgency to get everybody back together. We all need positive encouragement spoken into our lives. Without it, it can be a pretty dark world.” The support of Providence Church has been invaluable to the continued operation of the CR group, Duvall said. The church supplies volunteers and provides most of the meals. For the past eight years, the church has also held an annual CR Sunday, during which CR participants share their testimonies. This year’s service took place on Sept. 13, and a recording may be accessed at www.provchurch.net.

Duvall also credited the action of keeping Jesus Christ at the center of the program as crucial to its decade-long existence. “We put all our trust in Him to keep us safe and give us wisdom,” Duvall said. “People are searching. The need something, a way. When He is at our center, it takes a lot of weight off our shoulders. We continue to lead people in His direction.” Participation in CR is open to anyone, and Duvall described it as a highly diverse group. Attendees come from all walks of life and hail from local municipalities to as far away as Lititz and Baltimore. Individuals are dealing with substance abuse, grief, mental health issues, and more. Duvall has attended trainings and built a network of ministry leaders and mental health professionals. Referrals for additional help are provided as necessary. “Don’t ever feel like you’re in a place where things are hopeless. If you’re feeling that way, we encourage people to come see us and talk to us,” Duvall invited. “Just show up. It’s ‘come as you are.’” For more information about CR at Providence Church, readers may call the church at 717786-5580.

produce the Trunk or Treat aspect of the harvest party. Part car show, part sweets giveaway, the Trunk or Treat is open to anyone who would like to exhibit a vehicle. Festive decorations on the vehicles and items to distribute to visitors are encouraged but not required. There is a cost to participate, and proceeds will benefit the WAA and RFFC. Additionally, the RFFC will offer fire prevention lessons for children and adults. “We are here to serve the community and are looking forward to this event,” RFFC assistant chief Jason Stone remarked. “We want people to know we are here for them.” “It’s community working together,” Zimmerman said,

adding that Living Stones members have been part of the WAA and RFFC for countless years. The harvest party will also include pony cart rides and other outdoor activities. Cavod Theatre is slated to perform during the afternoon as well. Admission will be free of charge. Hot dogs, chicken corn soup, salty snacks, desserts, and water will be available by donation. Zimmerman suggested that attendees bring chairs or blankets so they may be seated for the theatrical and fireworks performances. Additionally, attendess should be prepared to follow state guidelines for COVID-19 mitigation. Living Stones is a small

SPORTS Solis Sparks Cross Country Win Over E-town ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition -

Anthony Solis recorded the 12th fastest time on Solanco’s course (17:33), collected his first varsity win and led the Mules to a 29-28 squeaker over Elizabethtown last Tuesday. Avery Jacobsen (17:44), Wyatt Tomison (18:43) and Jimmy Hartigan (18:47) secured fourth through sixth place while Joey Hartigan was Solanco’s fifth runner, placing 12th in 20:07. “Anthony had a nice run and Jimmy ran a PR and has emerged as our fourth runner,” noted head coach Kyle Nardella. “Avery and Liam Findley (13th, 20:11) also ran PR’s.” Mason Sinclair (17th, 20:45), Sean Keller (19th, 21:52) and Michael Eisenberger (20th, 23:44) followed. The girls’ squad placed four runners in the top nine but dropped a 22-35 result against the Bears. Lilly Soulliard finished in second place (20:03) with Emma Baxter (5th, 21:25), Christine Wagner (7th, 22:19), Nicole Dodson (9th, 22:56) and Olivia Singleton (17th, 24:55) rounding out the scoring. “Each of the girls ran faster this meet than their last home meet,” Nardella pointed out. “This team will return everyone next season, and with Daria Neaves and Halle Brown returning from injury, should be very competitive.” VOLLEYBALL Solanco suffered back-to-back losses last week, dropping their record to 1-5 overall. The Mares have suffered just two shutouts on the season to date. They have put up competitive numbers almost every time out. Last Monday they hosted Cocalico. Despite a gym empty of fans, Solanco broke a 17-17 first set tie and won 2519. Unfortunately, a lack of consistency and unforced errors at critical times allowed the Eagles to pull away 25-21, 25-8, 26-24. Solanco defeated Cocalico 3-1 just four days earlier. “Unforced errors at the wrong time is what ultimately cost us,” said first

year head coach Dillon Costrello. “We have three setters (Madi Davis, Triniti Erisman and Kate Unger) and I have been using all three. Ultimately they run the show and need to give our attackers the best chance to score,” he added. “This team grows every game. Being a new coach, I told the team new slates - new year with different mindsets,” Costrello continued. “They can be competitive, but they have to have that mindset. They are a talented group.” Emma Canale had a great night with six blocks and five kills with one error. Unger dished out 10 assists, Anya Fisher served up five aces and Maggie Perry patrolled the baseline with 24 digs. On the road Tuesday, the team went toe-to-toe with Lebanon. Three of the five sets were determined by a total of nine points. The hosts prevailed 25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10. Canale recorded eight kills and nine blocks. Davis collected 15 assists, Perry added 11 digs and Jaidee Beam was tops with eight aces. BOYS’ SOCCER Down 2-0 at the half, Solanco matched Cocalico at the offensive end but it wasn’t enough in their 4-2 loss Tuesday night in Quarryville. Trent McDowell and Jaydon Yoder scored Solanco’s unassisted goals. “We had some great 1v1 opportunities that led to a penalty kick,” said head coach Brandon Smith, “and we had a lot of free kicks go our way. “This team has showed a lot of growth,” he added. “We are passing better and our spacing is improving. Plus they never give up. They are starting to take ownership of their decisions, and are thinking like soccer players.” FOOTBALL A pair of field goals proved to be the difference in Solanco’s 22-20 upset over visiting Cocalico on October 2. Trent McDowell celebrated his birthday by kicking his first field goal of the

season. The 38-yarder with 3:34 put Solanco in front 24-15 and proved to be the game-winner. Cocalico (1-1) cut the lead to 22-20 with 1:47 left, recovered the onside kick and moved the ball within field goal range. With 5.3 ticks remaining, Cocalico’s Alex Mellinger drilled a 28yard field goal for what looked to be the win. A timeout, however, was awarded just before, setting up a second attempt, which went wide right, and left Solanco (2-0) in front. “The timeout was called to avoid a delay of game penalty,” said head coach Tony Cox. “I would have done the same thing. “There was a lot of adversity in this game,” he added. “But the kids kept their heads up and kept fighting. Football is like life. Sometimes things don’t go your way and you have to fight harder. We did that.” Cocalico went in front with a 65yard run by Brycen Flinton in the first quarter. Ronnie Fulton’s (65 yards rushing) 23-yard run in the second frame knotted the score at the half. Mason St. Clair found the end zone twice in the third quarter and McDowell’s game-winning field goal was sandwiched around two Cocalico scores. “Trent has been doing well at practice,” said Cox. “I had confidence in him. “Mason made some nice passes,” he added. “We’re trying to throw a bit more to keep teams honest. And our defense stuck together. Seth Harnish (center, middle linebacker) is a great leader. He’s the backbone of the team. “And we didn’t turn the ball over,” Cox noted. Zach Turpen finished with 105 rushing yards, Harnish added nine solo tackles and Jon Revolorio finished with six. GIRLS’ SOCCER Hoping to use momentum from their 3-0 shutout over Octorara on Oct. 1, the girls’ soccer team hosted Lampeter-Strasburg less than 24 hours later and were dealt their first

two goal loss of the season, a 3-1 final Friday. The Pioneers, up 1-0 at the half, tallied a pair of second half insurance goals before Solanco prevented the shutout with a goal by Nikki Trout, assisted by Josie Janssen, in the 77th minute. Looking to rebound at Cocalico (51) Tuesday proved to be a bigger challenge. The Eagles’ high powered offense leads the entire league in scoring with 28 total goals. They reached that total with a three-goal win over Solanco (2-4). FIELD HOCKEY After splitting a pair of 1-0 outings, the hockey team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hand of Elco Saturday morning, Oct. 3. The visitors scored what proved to be the game-winner with 7:05 left in the first quarter. The Mares weren’t without opportunity, creating six corners and three shots on goal. Kimmy Beacham recorded six saves and Kaley Wilson added a defensive save.

Last Tuesday Solanco was dealt a 6-0 loss by Garden Spot who improved to 5-1 overall. Despite the lopsided final, neither team found the back of the net in the

Anthony Solis-Morales turned in a 17:33 to finish first overall and lead the Solanco boys to a slim, 28-29, Section One cross-country victory over E-town last Tuesday in Quarryville.

Emma Baxter was Solanco’s second-place runner, posting a time of 21:25 to finish fifth overall in the Mares’ 35-22, Section Two loss to visiting Elizabethtown last Tuesday.

Men’s Breakfast! TOPIC: Time Management/Redeeming the Time Taught by: Pastor Vern Stoltzfus

Tanglewood Will Aid ServeNow

Vern Stoltzfus grew up in Lancaster, PA and became a believer in Jesus Christ at a young age. He describes himself as “just an average Joe farm boy that loves trucks and also God’s Word”. He pastors Calvary Chapel - Honey Brook while at the same time owning and managing a large food distribution and trucking business in Kinzers, PA. Vern is married to Donna and lives in Honey Brook, PA. Come hear his story and his perspective on time management and “redeeming the time” from a Biblical perspective.

out,” Glenn said. “I think it’s going to be a very fun event. I hope to see a lot of people out there.” A fee has been set to exhibit a vehicle. Spectators may attend free of charge. To supplement the eye candy, the event will include music; prize drawings for car cleaning kits, gift cards, cash, and more; photo opportunities with motorhead models by donation; and wood-grilled burgers and hot dogs, other food, and beverages for sale. There will also be a stand where attendees may register to sponsor a child for this year’s gift-giving season. The primary fundraiser for Santa’s Helpers has been a designer bag bingo that would sell out several weeks in advance and raise $15,000. “COVID-19 put a kibosh to that this year,” Glenn remarked. “The car show won’t raise the funds the bingo did, but something’s better than nothing.” Glenn explained that he and his wife, Johanna, started Santa’s Helpers in 1988 when she noticed that a student at Willow Street Elementary School needed a winter jacket. The Davises purchased outerwear and some other items for the child and delivered them anonymously. The project snowballed from there, with Santa’s Helpers providing clothing and Christmas gifts to an increasing number of students. In 2019, about 100 students in L-S received gifts. The organization spends about $150 per recipient. Santa’s Helpers coordinates efforts with L-S social workers, who work with teachers to identify students who could use the help. Confidentiality is maintained throughout the process, and families are contacted for their consent to participate in the program and to ascertain what they need. For more information about the car show or to sponsor gifts for a student, readers may call Johanna at 717-203-8552.

Tanglewood Golf Course, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, will donate a portion of every player’s fees during the weekend of Friday, Oct. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 18, to the ministry ServeNow.

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise.” Ephesians 5:15

out,” Glenn said.

Tee times may be reserved by visiting www.twgolf.com or by calling 717-786-2500. To learn more about ServeNow, readers may visit www.weservenow.org.
