Celebrate The Season With A Harvest Party BY COURTNEY MENGEL

As important as it is for people to love themselves, it’s equally important for people to feel loved and welcomed by others, which is why Peach Bottom resident Debbie Zimmerman believes in community. Ever since she returned to Living Stones Vineyard Church two years ago, Zimmerman has been a very active member of the church. Through Zimmerman’s efforts, this will be the second year that Living Stones Vineyard Church hosts its Harvest Party.

“I believe in community, reaching the community, and just sharing God’s love in an inviting, welcoming environment,” said Zimmerman. Although she is the coordinator of this event, she emphasized that she could not do it alone. The Harvest Party will return to Living Stones Vineyard Church, 2292 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, on Saturday, Oct. 30. The fun will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end after dark with a fireworks display donated by Bada Boom at Fireworks Fantasy. There will be a Trunk or Treat, pony cart rides, sack races, See Harvest Play pg 6

What can organizations do to help families? For Solanco Family Life Network (SFLN), the answer became a partnership between schools, social services, churches, and community organizations. For the past six years, SFLN has served the Solanco School District by connecting families in need with resources that fill those needs. “A lot of people have needs and they’re not sure where to go with that,” explained Avery Hill, Solanco School District social worker and

In September, the Society of American Florists (SAF) recognized Kenneth Royer, inducting the Lebanon resident into the Floriculture Hall of Fame at the association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his contributions to the industry. Kenneth’s son Greg, chairman of Royer’s, accepted the award on his father’s behalf. SAF noted that Kenneth was the first florist in the country to implement computerized systems for his stores and was among the first florists to import flowers directly from South America. In 1998, he published the book “Retailing Flowers Profitably,” and he has held dozens of seminars on topics from marketing to management and post-harvest care, according to an article on SAF’s website. member of the SFLN planning team. “The network is a really great resource because it pulls all of us together, so when we meet a family with multidimensional needs, we can get all the needs met to tie things together for them faster.” Currently, about 40 organizations within the community meet every month. For the first time, SFLN will co-host a Family Fun Night with Black Rock Retreat (BRR). The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9, at BRR, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will begin with a meal followed by a fun-filled evening of activities. Among the highlights will be door prizes, children’s activities, and a resource table fair. There will also be four rounds of bingo, and the winner of each round will receive a themed gift basket. Also, at each resource table, attendees can collect tickets, which can then be used to enter drawings for prizes. Backpacks, a diaper and baby basket, kids’ toys, gift certificates, and a self-pampering basket will be among the prizes. “Despite all the chaos at the moment right now, we will still support families, and that will never change,” said Hill. “We want to have a fun night where we can come together, show support as a community, and reach out to meet whatever needs we can.” SFLN is looking for donations that will be gifted at the event. Donation ideas include gift certificates, themed baskets, family gifts, or resources. Those interested in donating can contact Hill at avery_hill@solancosd.org or 717-786-0510 with a description of the item, which must be ready for pickup by Mon-

day, Nov. 1. “I think this is a very challenging time for a lot of communities, so I think having an event where we can focus on the strength of our community is huge right now,” stated Hill. Reservations for the Family Fun Night are strongly encouraged and should be made as soon as possible. Reservations can be made at https://bit.ly/3iI5SNy. The Lancaster Mennonite Blazers have given up a league-low eight goals to date and have piled up a league-high 70. They handed Solanco an 8-0 loss. Last Monday at home, Solanco hosted Lampeter-Strasburg (7-8 overall) but again, struggled on the offensive end, falling 5-0. “Solanco gets better every time we play them,” said Pioneer boss Katrina Swarr. GIRLS’ SOCCER Coming off a 1-0 heartbreaker against Cocalico, Solanco traveled to Elco on Thursday, Oct. 7 for second round action against the Raiders, a team they defeated 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 20. Looking for the sweep, Solanco went toe-to-toe with the hosts, neither team willing to budge. The Raiders held a slim 6-5 edge in corners and both teams managed five shots on goal. Elco, however, got one through in the 59th minute and currently sits on top of the Section Three standings at 9-1. Cocalico moved into second place at 8-2 while Solanco, at 7-3, slipped to third. “That was a tough one,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “We put ourselves right where we wanted to be, playing for the section title. Wagner was the only one to advance, firing a 73-77 for a two day 150 total, leaving him in a tie for fourth place. “The course was tougher on Saturday and windy,” said head coach Greg Minnich. “He moved from 10th to fourth place and reeled off seven pars in a row at one point. She will be back next year and do well.” VOLLEYBALL After a 3-1 win over Lebanon, Solanco dropped two straight, suffering a tight 3-1 loss (25-12, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) at L-S before a 3-0 defeat to Ephrata (12-2). “It was senior night at L-S so a lot of emotion,” said head coach Dillon Costello. “I moved Kate Unger to the outside position for set three. She’s a good ball control player and capable of playing anywhere. “We were hoping to take it to five, but some unforced errors prevented that.” The two-game stat totals include Unger (12digs, 5 blocks), Martha Weaver (2 blocks), Madi Davis (16 assists), Jaidee Beam (7 kills, 2 aces), Trinity Erisman (3 aces) and Karleigh Good (2 aces, 8 digs). TENNIS Solanco’s tennis team competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League flight tournament that got underway Friday, Oct. 8. The tournament officially wrapped up Solanco’s season. Grace Pursel, Solanco’s No. 1, had the unfortunate draw of facing No. 2 seed and defending L-L champ Catherine Rabatin of Penn Manor who advanced to the finals without dropping a game. In Flight two action, Adrienne Dolan, who had a 6-7 L-L singles record, suffered a straight set loss to Lampeter’s Kylie Gerhardt while at No. 3, Destiny Langley

Suffering opening round losses in doubles play was Purcel and Dolan against Elizabethtown at No. 1, Langley and Armstrong against Manheim Central at No. 2, and Ava Peiffer and Wendy Lehmann whose season ended with a loss to Lancaster Catholic’s No. 3 seed. “Wendy had several different doubles partners throughout the

season but her overall record, for doubles, was 5-4,” noted head coach Annie Hammel. “This was a season of learning, rebuilding, flexibility and lots of growth,” the coach continued. “The scores never show how close some of the matches really are. We have a young team, and most will still be on the team for two more years. The girls are motivated to work hard during the off season to improve both their personal and team records next season.”

The teams from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Fulton Bank and Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories led as the top fundraising companies. Participant Terrie Byrd began supporting the Lancaster Heart Walk seven years ago. This year, Terrie raised more than $6,800, earning her the Top Walker title for raising the most of any individual participant. Her team, Lancaster General Health Cass’s Heart Throbs, also topped the team fundraising leaderboard with $7,619 raised. Byrd noted that her family has a history of heart disease. After a brief opening ceremony, walkers took off on a 1.5-mile loop walk around the baseball stadium. Supporters who were unable to attend the Heart Walk in person were encouraged to walk on their own path. The American

Heart Association encourages anyone who wishes to support the Heart Walk, but was unable to attend the event in person, to walk where they are and share their walk on social media using #LancasterHeartWalk. The funds raised at events like the Heart Walk support the American Heart Association’s mission, including advocating for public policy to improve community health, advancing the science of CPR, improving outcomes for heart and stroke patients, and investing in cardiovascular research that has led to life-saving advancements in prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Donations to help the American Heart Association reach its $157,500 goal for the Lancaster Heart Walk will be accepted through Monday, Oct. 25. maker, will be presented in the candlelit rooms of the General Edward Hand Mansion on Thursdays, Nov. 4, 11 and 18, and Fridays, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, with performances at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Each performance will run approximately 50 minutes, with scenes taking place in each of the four parlors on the main floor and in the central hallway of the circa 1794 mansion. The play was originally performed at Rock Ford to sold-out audiences in 2019. The script draws from the first of the novel’s three volumes, which follows the title character’s efforts to set up her friend Harriet Smith and the village vicar. The story takes place circa 1800 - Revolutionary War Gen. Edward Hand’s era - albeit in England.

Recreational Programs Posted The performance also includes period music and dancing, which was coordinated in part by Rock Ford’s period dancers, led by Glenda Jardel. To comply with COVID-19 precautions and to allow the play to be performed within the house, tickets are limited to 15 per performance, and face coverings by audience members will be required. Early reservations are encouraged. Visitors should bear in mind that this event is not handicapped-accessible. Guests will stand during the performance and follow the characters from room to room on the first floor of the mansion. To purchase tickets, visit http://rockford.yapsody.com.
