CRAFT SHOW

Two events will herald the start of the Christmas season at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. The annual holiday bazaar held by the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Women (MOPW) will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ten vendors will sell an array of items, including amigurumi (crocheted animals and other characters), cards and stationery, homemade jellies, home

décor, and wooden decorations. Crocheted, quilted, and sewn items will be available as well. Door prizes will be awarded every half-hour, with the prizes donated by vendors in lieu of paying a fee to participate. A crafting supplies room will be new this year. MOPW member Nancy Harnish explained its origin, familiar to many a crafter. “Marlene (Fromm) and I bought a bunch (of supplies) at a sale for dirt cheap, and we had grandiose ideas, but we never got around to it,” she said. Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church members will collect shoebox gifts for Operation See MOPC pg 3 Christmas Child from Nov. 18 to 25 and host a holiday bazaar on Nov. 2.

“Dark Night, Bright Light” Event Promise Players To Stage To Supplement Trick-Or-Treating “Don’t Kick The Turkeys” Warding off ghosts was the original purpose of wearing costumes and lighting bonfires when the ancient Celts created Halloween’s precursor, Samhain. Christians, however, believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who is called the Light of the World in the Bible, rendered powerless these spirits. Children and adults may learn more at the “Dark Night, Bright Light” event on Thursday, Oct. 31. Oak Hill Fellowship Church and Solid Rock Youth Ministries have partnered to offer a fun stop for trick-or-treaters in Quarryville on Oct. 31. The doors of the Solid Rock Youth Center, 34 E. State St., Quarryville, will be open from 6 to 8 p.m., and visitors may stop in to play games, receive candy and refreshments, and learn about the Gospel. Multiple game stations will See “Dark Night, Bright Light” pg 4

A church so stuck in its ways that only news of the new pastor’s impending death can get its members to change - if that story sounds familiar, it is because it is. “This is the fourth time we’re doing it,” said Doreen Creighton, founder of

Solid Rock Youth Ministries program director Josh Rotz (left) and Oak Hill Fellowship Church pastor Ben Miller invite children and their families to stop by the youth center in Quarryville for some trick-or-treating fun on Oct. 31.

Promise Players, a Christian theater group, and director of the group’s next production, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys.” “It’s our most requested play.” The story is also reminiscent of reallife churches that struggle with loyalty to tradition and a reluctance to change. “We love our church. Promise Players will present “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” a comedy about a church community, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on Nov. 1 to 3 and 7 to 10.

MOPC will once again serve as a drop-off center for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts. The church will be open to receive the boxes from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19 and 20; from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21; from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22; from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 23; from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24; and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25. The gifts will be taken to the collection center in Baltimore, where they will be checked to ensure the contents fit the criteria listed at www.samaritans purse.org/occ, and then shipped to churches around the world, where they will be distributed throughout the year at special

events. “Local pastors follow up with the children,” drop-off center coordinator Dan Henry said. “They can earn a Bible by completing ‘The Greatest Gift’ study.” Henry noted that stories about how lives were changed through shoebox gifts and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are posted on the Operation Christmas Child website. Information about what to include in the gift boxes is also available at the site. Additionally, readers may mark their calendars now for the MOPC candlelight Christmas Eve service, which will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. Caroling to homebound people will also be held in December, and details will be announced later. Individuals who have questions about the drop-off center or December events may call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

The kitchen will offer Middle Octorara Muffins - breakfast sandwiches containing bacon, eggs, and cheese - to start the day. The lunch menu will include an assortment of soups, beef barbecue, and hot dogs. Soft pretzels will return for the second year, as they went over well last year, said MOPW member Shirley Miller. The group will try adding turkey barbecue to the menu this year as a way to use the leftover meat from the turkey supper held earlier this month. Miller noted that although 400 people were served at the dinner, the unexpected boon of receiving boneless meat from a new supplier resulted in more net meat than expected. There will also be a baked goods table with cookies, cakes, pies, and other sweet treats, including peanut butter balls. “Boy, people go (wild) for those things,” Miller said of the nutty delights. Proceeds from the bazaar will

wonderful,” quipped Tim Strawser, speaking as his character in the play. “The only thing that changes is the pastors,” added actor Wayne Rhinier. The play addresses a number of themes, including prejudice, control issues, jumping to conclusions, and how to help others. “I’ve heard a pastor say he could do four sermons on the play alone,” said actor Ken Hess. Although there is a serious message in the play, it addresses problems in the church in a humorous way. “It’s a little over the top with some of the characters, but not too far,” Creighton commented. “It is just a funny play.” Promise Players presented “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” which was written by Andy and Jennifer Hansen, in 2001, 2004, and 2011. Many of the actors in the upcoming production also appeared in the previous productions. Reflecting on the contrasts between the 2001 and 2019 productions, actress Julie Beittel remarked, “(My character) is really different. The first time, I played her as a caricature, but now she’s more real. I see ways

offer candy and highlight a simple truth about light and darkness. This is a drop-in event, and all the games will take about 15 minutes total to play through. Oak Hill pastor Ben Miller explained that his church used to host this event out of its previous meeting location on State Street, but since the congregation has moved to 902 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, Oak Hill has partnered

that I’m like her.” “We were in our 30s or 40s then,” Strawser said of the first production. “Now, (the play) will speak a little louder because we are (the age of) the people who control the church.” Creighton suggested that along with age and maturity has come a deeper understanding of issues that arise in churches. “We’re human, and that’s where we need the grace of God,” she said. “Everyone has been through something in their life (and that may be) the reason why they act the way they do,” said actress Nancy Snyder. “We only see the tip of the iceberg.” Presenting the play and its valuable message is a service to churchgoers, as it will hopefully inspire them to be thoughtful about their own congregations. “It means more to us,” Hess remarked. “I look at past shows as (just) a show and this one as a ministry.” Promise Players, a nonprofit theater group, is starting its 25th season. “I think God has really blessed it,” Creighton said. “I could tell so many stories of how God provided the actors we

needed for each show.” Audiences have been generous in their support, as well. Since the beginning, the suggested donations for admission have been given to a charity related in some way to the respective productions, for a total of more than $224,000 in 24 years. For “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg was selected as the beneficiary as there is a child in the cast. “That’s one of the things I like about (Promise Players),” said actress Laura Scott-Wise. “We talk about helping others in the play, and we get to help (the clinic).” The play will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1; at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 2 and 9; at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, Nov. 3 and 10; and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8. Students at The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies perform a shadow-screen play on the life of the Athenian hero Theseus. The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies recently held its 13th annual summer Latin camp at its facilities in Lancaster. The camp, a week of outdoor reading, exploration, and discussion, culminating in an indoor shadow-screen dramatic performance put on by the students themselves, goes by the name Latin on the Lawn and Greek on the Green. This year’s theme was “Theseus: The Labyrinthian Layers of His Adventures and Misadventures.” In preparation for their performance at Saint James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, students spent a week examining sources found in history, legend, fable, and folktale concerning the ancient Athenian hero Theseus and Jack of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The participants, all students in the Latin and Greek courses of The

Lancaster Center for Classical Studies during the regular school year, explored tales reaching from the pre-historical Indo-European oral traditions to the 21st-century oral traditions of Appalachia. The theatrical production helped to summarize the camp week’s discoveries and provided an overview of the life of Theseus, stretching from the period before his birth to the many challenging tasks that he undertook in his life. Students considered his mistakes and failures and concluded that, in spite of these, Theseus accomplished things of enduring good for his home city-state of Athens and for humanity. Lancaster Stake members for the event. The conference also included Etiquette Night, organized and led by young men’s stake president Monte Ward and his wife, Jennifer. Youths were transported to the Lancaster Stake building, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, and in their Sunday best, they first spent time learning about proper etiquette and then ate a meal served by elders in the stake. The young men and young women practiced their new skills in proper dining etiquette. The event concluded with a dance in the cultural hall, where the youths and adults practiced their dance etiquette skills. Another special activity was a three-part Eagle Scout service project organized by Derek Brown from Troop 184 of the Shrewsbury Ward. Prior to the conference, Derek placed boxes in the foyers of the churches in the stake for member donations of useful items to give to various groups in need and to help the Eagle Scout candidate complete his goal. At the conference, attendees sorted the contributions and decorated and filled bags with items that would then be donated to Veterans Affairs for deployed members of the military and those in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon, as well as the pediatric ward at York Hospital. Deployed individuals received beverage packets, while men and women at the VA Hospital received puzzle books and small hygiene items, including deodorant, body wash, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Patients at York Hospital received toys and games, such as puzzles, stuffed animals, craft kits, coloring books and crayons. Each evening of the Youth Conference ended with a devotional within groups divided into tribes, and each morning started with a devotional given by invited members from the Stake. The final morning of the Youth

Youth Conference participants (from left) Trent McBride, Payson Elmore and Bryce Popolis, along with Trent’s father, Adam McBride, played tennis. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored its annual Youth Conference in July.

Youths of the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prepared thank-you and getwell bags for deployed members of the military, hospitalized veterans in Lebanon, and children in the pediatric ward at York Hospital. The activity was part of an Eagle Scout project. Conference included workshops on special subject matters chosen by the youths. Youths could learn more about patriarchal blessings, improve upon social skills when interacting with other young people, and attend “Survival 101” to learn the basic skills needed when one leaves home. The Youth Conference ended with a special testimony meeting conducted by president Allen Zerbe of the stake

presidency. Upon their return from the Youth Conference, many of the young men and women reported to their congregations the following Sunday. Members of the bishopric or stake presidency were invited to attend as much of the conference as possible. Leaders of the church’s groups for young men and young women were encouraged to attend the entire conference.

Young members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake, Lancaster and York Counties, attended their church’s annual Youth Conference from July 18 to 20 on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown. A total of 93 men and women ages 14 to 18 from all seven wards and two branches of the Lancaster Stake participated. The Church stated that the purpose of the conference is for youths to build faith in Jesus Christ, strengthen their testimonies, develop their talents, make new friends, and have fun with peers who share similar beliefs and standards. Youth conferences are usually held once each year during the summer on a ward level, with each congregation holding its own conference, or on a stake level, with all congregations in a large geographical area combining. This stake youth conference was planned and carried out by the Stake Aaronic Priesthood Young Women Committee under the direction of stake president Conrad Knudson of York. The youths were invited to assist the committee as much as possible in planning the conference. The youths first selected a Gospel theme for the conference. They could choose a Scripture, a quotation from a prophet, or another theme. The theme this year was “Survivor - Overcoming Challenges, Overcoming Fears.” The youths planned activities, such as devotionals, group meetings, learning experiences, sports activities, and service projects that were consistent with the theme. On the first night, participants attended a luau complete with a pig roasted by Philip Sherffy, a Scouting committee member. The event was held on Elizabethtown College’s Brinser Field, which was decorated with a Hawaiian theme and included a photo booth. Youths from the Harrisburg Stake joined the

Molinarez and Alondra Quinonez contributed to that scramble with a combined nine aces. Canale continued her presence at the net and led with six blocks. Contributing to the defensive hustle was Quinonez with eight digs and Molinarez with five. Kate Unger added five assists to round out a balanced team win. Solanco took that momentum into Wednesday’s final section matchup of the season, a home game against Lampeter-Strasburg, or did they? Despite falling behind 6-0 in the first set, the Mares, on Senior Night, got stronger each set and pulled out a 3-2 thriller after yielding a 25-16 first set result. “That was our first five set match of the season and our first Section Two victory,” noted Cross. “We got off to a rocky start but once we settled down there seemed to be an energy and focus that we’ve been lacking,” said Cross. “They all seemed to click at once and they were all on the same page at the same time. And, as the game went on, we Photo by Mona Steinhauer cut down on our unforced errors. The third set featured nine ties, including 24-24, before L-S rallied from a 23-20 deficit to win 26-24. Solanco led from start to finish in non-league result against visiting Berks Christian. The hosts, with 14 total aces, got off to a strong start, taking the first set 25-19. Berks Christian returned the favor, taking the second set 25-18 but the Mares came back stronger than ever, taking set three quickly, 25-10 and finishing out

the fourth set and won easily, 25-15. The final set of the night was nip-andtuck early on but the Pioneers committed a handful of errors and Quinonez dished out some key serves in pushing the Mares to a 15-9 win. “Alondra is our most consistent server,” noted Cross. “When she wasn’t serving aces she was hitting spots. And she also finished with 17 digs.” Team defense was evident as Maggie Perry (11), Davis (11), Molinarez (8) and Unger (7) all recorded digs while Canale (5), Cheyanne Cutler (2) and Anya Fisher (2) made a stand at the net with blocks. With Unger handing out eight assists and Davis four, the Mares also earned some key kills. Molinarez led the way with six with Fisher (4), Dow (4) and Davis (3) also contributing. Looking for a three-game win streak on Thursday, the Mares had to adjust after an injury in the lineup and struggled to regroup. They suffered a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 26-24) loss at Lititz Christian. “It wasn’t the way we wanted to end our season but the girls did the best they could with a rotation we haven’t practiced due to personnel change,” said Cross. Canale was solid at the net with five kills and five blocks. Quinonez served up four aces and recorded six digs and Molinarez was tops with 15 digs and added three kills and two aces. Perry chipped in with 11 digs and two aces. CROSS COUNTRY In a field of 167 runners, Solanco’s Anthony Solis-Morales worked his way to a Lancaster-Lebanon League medal winning performance at the championship race held Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Ephrata Middle School. Solis clocked a 17:18 and finished in 22nd place as Solanco’s only medal winner. He was the second freshman to cross the finish line. As a team, the Mules finished 17th out of 22 teams.

“Anthony had a giant race and his time was the best time ever recorded on the L-L course by a Solanco freshman and ranked him ninth all-time among Solanco xc runners,” said head coach Craig Ausel. “He got out to a

slow start and was sitting around 3540 at the mile mark, but his consistent work and determined effort over the last two miles is a true indicator of his abilities and work this season.” Solis-Moralis was followed by

Solanco’s Alondra Quinonez reaches for a Lampeter-Strasburg Anthony Solis turned in the best finish for the Solanco runners at last Tuesday’s Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross Country Champiserve during the Mares’ 3-2, Section Two win at home last onships at Ephrata Middle School, placing 22nd overall with a time of 17:18.1, while teammate Daria Neaves paced the Mares’ efforts with a 21:41.0 that put her 43rd overall in the girls race. Wednesday.

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition seniors Tate Fisher, Nathan Eller and Brandon Daniel. Fisher was 71st with an 18:30 and placed his name on the top 40 all-time list of SLC xc times on the L-L course. “We can’t say enough about Tate’s leadership,” said Ausel. “He has helped establish a mindset and culture of hard work, discipline, and positivity that has made this team something special.” Eller also cracked the top 100, finishing 90th with an 18:44.6. “Nathan has gotten the most from his potential with an outstanding year of training,” Ausel said. “We look for him to finish strong at the district meet. Tate and Nathan were both 30 seconds faster and 40 places higher than last year. “Brandon ran his very best race of the season at 19:22,” the coach continued. “His consistent hard work has allowed him to move from our eighth man into the top five. Sean Keller rounded out the top five with a 19:50. Mason Sinclair followed at 20:14 and an under the weather Joey Hartigan stopped the clock at 21:03. The girls’ team, with just five runners, placed 12th in a field of 17 squads.

As expected, Daria Neaves was the front runner for the Mares. She clocked a 21:41 for 43rd place and was the seventh freshman to place. “Daria had her sights set on a top 20-30 place finish,” said Ausel. “She fell a bit short but not by lack of determination. She was ranked 19th in Section One at the end of the regular season and there were 8-10 Section Two runners just as strong. Her time places her 29th on the all-time SLC xc list on the L-L course.” Close behind was freshman Emma Baxter who just missed the top 50, settling in at 53 in 22:08. Sophomores Nicole Dodson (68th, 22:38) and Halle Brown (87th, 23:38) also cracked the top 100. “Emma’s time places her 35th on the all-time SLC xc lady list for the L-L course,” Ausel noted. “Nicole overcame a slow start to move up 40 places. Her strong finish allowed our top three runners to be within one minute of each other,” he added. “And Halle ran her fastest race of the season. With the absence of Elaine Kreider, Halle’s strong race helped us greatly. “Freshman Stella Woy (26:16)

found herself in a key role as our fifth runner,” Ausel pointed out. “We are pleased with her determination. “If we had our full squad, I am confident that we would have finished closer to Warwick, who placed 10th. That was one of our season goals, to place in the top half of the league at the championship race,” he continued. “We fell a bit short but are feeling blessed by the effort of these studentathletes.” FOOTBALL A tight game after three quarters turned into a lopsided final when Solanco gave up three fourth quarter touchdowns in Lampeter on Friday, Oct. 11. Lampeter-Strasburg shook off its 33-14 loss to Manheim Central with a 41-14 victory on senior night and regained the Milk Jug Trophy. “L-S is a good team,” said head coach Tony Cox. “They capitalized on their chances and we did not. The fourth quarter penalties hurt. It was the little things that got us.” Solanco fell behind early, giving up 14 points in the first quarter but then rallied behind Nick Yannutz, who carried the ball 37 times for 234 yards and eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for his career. The senior set up Grady Unger’s one-yard plunge in the second quarter and then scored on a 16-yard burst with 2:57 left in the third. Unger’s two-point conversion tied the game at 14-14. That momentum, however, was squashed when Lampeter’s Connor Nolt (13-for-17 for 274 yards) found a wide open Alex Knapp with a 41-yard toss to the corner with 1:10 left in the third. But the Mules kept battling. A fake punt attempt play came up empty and L-S regained the ball with 10:10 left in the game. Then, on third and 18, Nolt hit Austin Stoltzfus with a 55-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 28-14. Solanco took over on their own 39 but an interception by Christian Garver resulted in a 32-yard touchdown and more momentum for the Pioneers. Add in Unger getting injured and leaving the game with 5:40 left, and the Mules were scrambling. “After the interception we just couldn’t get our feet back under us,” said Cox. “Mason St. Clair filled in for Unger. He’s played quarterback before. Regardless, we’re a young team and getting better each week. It hurts to lose but we have another game to pre-

pare for and we have to step up.” FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team wrapped up the 2019 season with a 3-1 loss to Cocalico (6-8) on Friday, Oct. 11. The Mares were 3-11 in section play and 4-14 overall. While that doesn’t qualify Solanco for the post-season, it is a season that shows notable progress. The Mares were behind 3-0 against the Eagles when senior Keirra Laird prevented the shutout with just two seconds left in the game. “To have a senior score in the final seconds of her final game just makes you throw away your care for a win or a loss,” said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “Moments like these outweigh the wins and losses.” The goal pushed Laird’s final season total to five goals and one assist which tied Mariah Stoltzfus for the team lead. Maggie Hirst followed with three goals and five assists. “We were 3-14-1 last season and 414 this year,” said Hawkins. “I know one win doesn’t look like much but in actual numbers scored and numbers against, there is a big difference. We almost doubled those totals.” Last year Solanco scored ten goals for the season. This year they tallied 18. “We also gave up ten less goals,” noted Hawkins. “I could go into offensive corners and shots on goal but to put it simply, they are almost all double the amount compared to last year. That shows tremendous progress that the win-loss record does not reflect. “Now we’ll take a break and in

January we will start indoor skill work,” she continued. “We are also doing a summer camp with Next Leve Field Hockey with Coach Shellenberger again. I think that had a huge effect on our offensive push this year.

October 23, 2019 - 11

“And the sections are changing next so we are excited about playing some teams that we haven’t faced in the four years I’ve been her,” she added. “We will continue to strive for moving in a positive direction.”

On Sept. 15, the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met for its semiannual stake conference. At this meeting, former Stake President Conrad Knudson and his two counselors, David Kenley and Allen Zerbe, were released from their callings in the stake presidency, and a new presidency was called. Replacing Knudson as the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake president is Brad Smith of Lititz. Serving as his first counselor is president Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, formerly the second counselor. The new second counselor is president Byron Wilson of York. The stake president is also assisted by a high council, consisting of 12 men. Two visiting church leaders attended the conference to oversee the selection of the new stake presidency and to address the large congregation assembled for the conference. General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of

Northern Virginia set apart the new presidency, and they delivered speeches to the audience. When a stake holds a conference, it lasts two days with leadership meetings on Saturdays and talks by church leaders and selected members of the various congregations, along with special musical numbers on both days. All wards (larger congregations) and branches (smaller congregations) in a stake meet together in one building on Stake Conference Sunday for approximately two hours. All nine units of the stake convened at the stake center, 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, to learn more about Jesus Christ. The congregations included Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, Lititz, Shrewsbury, West York, and York Wards along with two smaller branches - the Columbia and Dover branches. The nine units make up a stake, which will be led by the new stake president and his two counselors; Smith will preside over all of Lancaster and York counties’ Latter-day Saints.

Visiting General Authorities met with local church leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sept. 15 at the Lancaster Pennsylvania Stake Center in Lancaster to participate in the release of the former stake presidency and the calling of a new presidency. General Authorities in attendance and the newly called stake presidency are (from left) General Authority Seventy Elder Richard J. Maynes of Utah, First Counselor Allen Zerbe of Quarryville, Stake President Brad Smith of Lititz, Second Counselor Byron L. Wilson of York, and Area Seventy Elder Kevin E. Calderwood of Northern Virginia. Smith, Zerbe, and Wilson will oversee the business of the Church in Lancaster and York counties. The Church’s Newsroom describes a stake president as “the lay leader of a stake, which is a geographic subdivision similar to a Catholic diocese.” Serving as a volunteer, usually for a period of approximately nine years, the stake president

oversees Church programs and stake members in their efforts to follow Jesus Christ. He also oversees the activities of the bishops or ward leaders.

If the name Dorothy Nyong’o sounds vaguely familiar, it is because her daughter Lupita Nyong’o is an Academy Award winner and the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar. The other members of the Nyong’o family are accomplished individuals as well, and Dorothy will present “Parenting - The Power of Choice” as the guest of honor at the “Night of Galaxy” event hosted by the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made Sisterhood (FaWMs) on Friday, Nov. 1. The event will be a celebration of kinship and diversity by Kenyan women, and everyone is invited to attend, regardless of their race, color, or nationality. It will take place from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The three-course meal will conclude with peacock-themed cupcakes, representing the FaWMs logo, which features a peacock and the slogan “Doing Life Together.” “FaWMs was inspired by the notion that women love to connect in groups beyond church, work, and life’s inevitable challenges, especially after 40 years,” said founder Helen WakinyueNthambiri. “We meet monthly for meals, investment, and simply to laugh (and) share experiences and ideas. There are no boundaries to our often-random topics. (It’s) very therapeutic. It often brings out the little girl in each one of us, including the notso-extroverted.” Wakinyue-Nthambiri formed the group for women over age 40 in 2017. A majority of members are from overseas. The name of the

group is taken from Psalm 139:14, which describes humans as fearfully and wonderfully made by God. The group is deliberately small in order to promote intimacy and trust, Wakinyue-Nthambiri said, and a waiting list for new members has been created. A group for women age 30 and older will be launched at the Nov. 1 event. “Exciting times (are ahead),” Wakinyue-Nthambiri commented. “Bigger things like travel, cruises, and hobby-sharing are in the works.” The theme for the Nov. 1 event was chosen to reflect magnificence and the glow of a galaxy of stars. Attendees are encouraged to wear elegant white in order to look and feel angelic. “You will be empowered, inspired, (and) loaded with fun,” Wakinyue-Nthambiri said of the event. Topics discussed during the evening will include health, academics, overcoming diaspora challenges and thriving in a foreign land, aging gracefully, and more. In addition to Dorothy, speakers will include Doreen Bett, Margaret Mbindyo, and Lilly Richards. Dorothy is the managing trustee of Africa Cancer Foundation, which was founded in part by her husband, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, current senator of Kenya’s Kisumu County and former Kenyan Minister for Medical Services. She serves as the president of the United States branch of the foundation. Dorothy holds degrees from the University of Nairobi and the United States International University. Giant Food Stores will celebrate the grand openings of its three newest central Pennsylvania stores this November. Its new Lebanon store, located at 1750 Quentin Road, will open on Friday, Nov. 1, at 8 a.m., and its stores at 3985 Columbia Ave., Columbia, and 35 Friendly Drive, Quarryville, will open one week later on Friday, Nov. 8 at 8 a.m. Giant entered into an agreement to acquire the three locations from Musser’s Markets in August. “We look forward to opening the doors to our three newest stores, which will be updated with plenty of Giants’s fresh ideas and amenities, while also keeping customer favorites like Musser’s bakery cookies, assorted pork sausages, and signature

chicken salad,” said Nicholas Bertram, president, Giant Food Stores. “We know how important these stores are to their local communities, and it’s our privilege to be able to serve our new neighbors.” Each store will offer expanded hours of operation from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Giant will employ more than 300 fulland part-time associates across the three stores, including approximately 220 from Musser’s Markets. Each of the three stores will feature Giant’s signature fresh departments, coupled with expanded product variety and new offerings. Kim O’Hara, a 16-year grocery veteran, has been appointed store manager of the new Lebanon Gi-

ant. Erin Arnold, a 15-year grocery veteran, is store manager of the new Columbia Giant. Nicole McMillan, with 20 years in the grocery industry, will be the Quarryville Giant store manager. Customers are invited to join the store teams and community leaders for a 7:40 a.m. ribboncutting ceremony on Nov. 1 in Lebanon and for 7:40 a.m. ceremonies on Nov. 8 in Columbia and Quarryville. As part of the celebration festivities, the first 200 customers in line will receive a Giant reusable shopping bag filled with product samples, 200 Giant Choice Rewards points, and other grand opening savings.
