Play For Purses At Southern Hope’s Bingo Event lthough it is still October, many people are counting down the days to Thanksgiving and Christmas. For some, the holiday season is the time for giving - whether it be giving to the community or to those who need a little extra help. With the goal of aiding families in need within southern Lancaster County, the Southern Hope Foundation (SHF) became an official nonprofit organization in 2019. In the past, SHF has provided families with presents, food, and funds for utility payments during holiday seasons. The foundation has also supported individuals during emergency situations, including financial assistance with newborn needs, medical emergencies, and natural disasters such as house fires. The goal of SHF is to continue these efforts and help year-round. On Sunday, Nov. 28, SHF will hold its first in-person event in almost two years. SHF has planned a designer purse bingo event in the Hoffman Building on the Solanco Fairgrounds,

A

Park Avenue, Quarryville. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will run from 1 to 4 p.m. The blackout prize will be a three-piece Michael Kors luggage set valued at over $1,000. There will also be door prizes and giveaways. Food, such as hot dogs, chips, and chicken noodle soup from C. R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, will be available for purchase. Ticket sales will not be guaranteed the day of the event, so it is strongly encouraged to prepurchase tickets by emailing southernhopefoundation @gmail.com or messaging the organization on Facebook. Each ticket will include 20 games of bingo. Proceeds from the designer purse bingo event will go toward the purchase of Christmas presents for 20 families this year. To be considered for selection as one of the families, email the organization or message it on Facebook. Applications will not be accepted after Friday, Nov. 12. People can nominate families as well. SHF is looking for volunteers to help at the designer purse bingo event. For more information, search for “Southern Hope Foundation” on Facebook.

Handling Grief

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou is credited with saying, “Be present in all things and thankful for all things.” For the fall season, employees at the Quarryville Borough have planned an essay writing contest for children where participants will explain why they are thankful for living in the Quarryville Borough. This past year, the borough has hosted a variety of contests for Quarryville residents. Most recently, 36 children participated in a See Essay Contest pg 11

According to Dan Steinman, Handi-Vangelism BASIS ministry assistant, the Help for People in Pain seminar given by Tim and Kathy Sheetz addresses any loss that significantly affects a person’s life and outlook. “It’s for people with different types of losses,” Steinman said. “Not necessarily the loss of a spouse or a child. It could be the loss of a job … a divorce or bankruptcy … a (difficult) diagnosis.”

Madi Davis distributed 15 assists, Anya Fisher recorded eight kills, and Kate Unger put up five blocks and put down six kills to contribute to the victory. “I give credit to our seniors (Anya Fisher, Jaidee Beam, Ellie Mankin, Kate Unger, Triniti Erisman, Madi Davis, Karleigh Good and Karina Shaiebly),” added Costrello. “They were good leaders the entire night. “You have to credit the defense too. Marissa did not have a defensive mistake all night,” Costrello praised. “She was everywhere. Our setters played great defense too and Karleigh was a great DS off the bench. They all played so well and for each other. Proud coach moment for sure.” That momentum, however, was short-lived as Solanco ran into the undefeated Bears of Elizabetown on Monday and went home with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-9 loss. Cannizzaro led the defense with nine digs and Unger added three blocks. Erisman (1 ace) dished out five assists, six of which Beam converted to kills.

score,” Musselman pointed out. “Joey also raced extremely well and picked up a few guys in the final stretches that were also critical. “Curtis ran well and continues to improve. He has many great races in his future,” the coach continued. “Michael only missed his PR by four seconds, the closest of our runners to accomplish that. Liam put forth a good effort and had a strong finish.” Tomison’s time ties for the 22nd fastest Solanco time in the L-L League Championship race. Jacobsen’s time is tied for 24th and Solis is tied for 26th. The Mules (5-5) finished one place ahead of McCaskey (7-3), the third place team in Section One. The girls’ team, with just four runners, did not score as a team but competed individually to qualify for districts. Emma Baxter led the way, earning a 16th place medal with a 21:08. That time is also the 25th fastest Solanco time in the L-L League Championship race. “Emma ran an amazing race,” lauded Musselman. “Her goal originally was to medal (top 25) but I knew she could do better and convinced her to go after top 15.” Christine Wagner’s 22:03 was good for 40th place. The sophomore’s time is also the 41st fastest Solanco time in the league race. “Christine fought to stay in

medal contention but just didn’t quite get there,” Musselman said. “She’s young and learning quickly. This will fuel the fire in future meets.” Nicole Dodson capped her career with a 25:13 (122nd) and Stella Woy finished in 138th place with a 26:09. “Nicole finished her high school career with a great race and Stella seems eager for another chance next year,” added Musselman. For more photos see www.townlively.com. GOLF Solanco’s Logan Wagner competed in the PIAA Cham-

pionships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort last Tuesday, Oct. 19. The junior punched his ticket with a fourth-place effort at the District Three championships but this time around carded an 84. “While that was not the score we were looking for, it was a valuable experience for Logan and he will work hard to return next year,” stated head coach Greg Minnich. “The course played tough, as usual, especially on the greens.” Wagner’s average was 78 and captured the lowest Section Two scoring average for the third straight season.

Lebanon VA Medical Center (VAMC) is encouraging female veterans to get screened for breast cancer during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. VAMC encourages all woman veterans to speak with their health care providers about breast health and get checked and, if applicable, treated for breast cancer. Some veterans may have

missed their regularly scheduled mammogram due to COVID-19, and woman veterans are encouraged to reach out to their VA health care provider to schedule one. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and throughout the year, Lebanon VAMC offers women’s health care, including breast care services. Every VA medical center has a woman veterans program manager to ensure woman veterans have access to appropriate care and treatment. Breast care resources available through VA include screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound and MRI, genetic counseling and testing, and cancer treatment. VA recommends regular breast cancer screening for women who are age 45 years and older, though some women may choose to start screening with yearly mammograms as early as age 40. Women should talk with their VA primary care provider team about what is best for them and schedule their mammogram. For more information, visit www.va.gov/lebanon-health -care/health-services/# specialty-care and click on Women Veteran Care. Hayrides, bounce houses, children’s games and more will be featured during a Fall Festival at Freedom Life Church in Christiana on Saturday, Oct. 30. Hosted by the FL Kids team, the event will include activities for children in fifth grade and younger, and families may stop by anytime between 4 and 5:30 p.m. This year’s event is an expansion of last year, when the church hosted a socially distanced Trunk or Treat event. “Last year, it was more for the families of the church because of COVID,” said Gina Turk, FL Kids director. “This is a Fall Festival with different activities. It will be very relaxed.” Activities will take place outdoors in the church’s multitiered front parking lot. “There will be horse and pony rides, a hayride, face painting, (temporary) tattoos, balloons and a Trunk or Treat,” said Turk. Concessions will feature snacks, including popcorn, cotton candy, pretzels and water. The event will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, most activities will be moved indoors, but the animal rides will not be offered. FL Kids is one of the programs for youths offered at Freedom Life Church, which is led by pastor Sam Masteller and his wife, Michele. FL Kids offers programs for infants, preschoolers and elementary school students. “FL Kids is for children from birth through fifth grade,” explained Turk. “My

team and I are all about teaching children at their level about how much God loves them. On Sunday, they experience at their level what it means to worship God.” FL Kids meets during Sunday services, which are held at 9 and 11 a.m. “When they are dropped off, we start with a game that goes with the lesson they are learning. We have music, worship and we pray,” said Turk. “We do our Bible verse and do our lesson again - reinforcing it through a craft - and then we have a closing activity where they do another game.” She said that children are never too young to learn important life lessons. “You are teaching them values and truths no matter how young,” Turk shared. “These are the world changers. If you teach them well, they will do great things.” FL Kids members and their parents will help run the Fall Festival. In addition to being a fun family event, the Fall Festival will also provide an opportunity for community members to meet new people and to learn about the church. “Stop in and have some fun with the kids. If you don’t have a church, check us out,” Turk added. “(We want people to know) that they have a place to feel loved.” Freedom Life Church is located at 447 Noble Road, Christiana. Admission to the Fall Festival is free, but preregistration is encouraged. Visit www.freedom.life/upcoming -events to register. For more information, email flkids@ freedom.life or call 610-5935959. More information and a link to register for the event are also available by visiting www.facebook.com/freedom life.tv and choosing Events.

Organizers of the Fall Festival at Freedom Life Church include (from left) Gina Turk, Val Englerth and Ashley Kauffman.
