Conservancy announces expansion of Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 2020, nature preserves, hiking trails and state parks across the United States saw a massive increase in visitors as Americans sought activities that were unaffected by COVID-19 safety restrictions.
Outdoor escapes offered an alternative to social gatherings and indoor events that were temporarily placed on hold, and many people found refuge in nature.
destinations for stir-crazy local residents to escape to. Four years later, Lancaster Conservancy has announced an expansion project that will increase the size of the park by 43 acres.
“Kelly’s Run is a beautiful stream. This buffer of forest will keep it clean and clear, as well as a better habitat for creatures.”
Lancaster County is rife with lush parks and scenic hiking trails, but Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve in Holtwood became one of the most popular
After the expansion, Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve will encompass more than 500 acres. The acquisition includes an additional quarter mile of Kelly’s Run Stream and a portion of forested land. The additional acreage will serve as a buffer between adjacent farmland and the waterway, as well as a sanctuary for human recreation and a vital habitat for local wildlife. The nature preserve

There exists a specific group of people who frequent museums merely to satisfy their curiosity. They don’t go to intentionally learn, but the learning happens organically, naturally.
Perhaps it’s not important to know exactly what type of learning goes on at the North Museum, only that the place simply promotes learning.
“It’s the joy of discovery, and it draws you in,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of
development and strategic partnerships. “That’s what happens at a museum. As you wander around the museum, you discover things. You stumble into things. Who knows what you’ll find? You don’t know what to expect. It’s a fascinating place.”
For the curious of all ages, there is plenty to find and discover at the North Museum of Nature and Science, which is located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster. The North Museum is three floors of exhibits, informational displays, stories and

The rustic landscape of the Southern End is a treasure trove of lost history and a sanctuary for natural beauty. The thick forests and rolling hills conceal several destinations that served as the backdrop for some of the most significant events in Lancaster’s past, even if many historical sites remain buried under native flora or repurposed plots of land. One such location is Drumore Mill, a former grist mill located on
Harmony Ridge Road in rural Drumore Township.
In 2022, Drumore Mill officially opened its doors as a scenic venue for weddings and corporate retreats. The 30-acre property contains multiple buildings that have been used to produce a number of resources since the first mill was erected in the mid17th century. The estate also includes multiple vistas of the Peach Bottom Slate Waterfall and Fishing Creek. Although Drumore Mill now serves as a place

“Without learning, I don’t think any of us survive,” said Downs. “Humans have been learning since we first populated the Earth. The North Museum prides itself as a leader in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The natural sciences are important. We’re really proponents of curiosity. It’s terribly important to foster that interest.”
An independent, nonprofit regional facility once associated with Franklin & Marshall College, the North Museum of Nature and Science is home to all sorts of interesting exhibits, like a live animal room, a dinosaur hall, rock and mineral collections, a planetarium, a nature gallery, an art gallery and an ornithology collection. It’s a wonderful space to uncover things you didn’t know.
“The North Museum is commit -
ted to the community,” said Downs. “We are committed to being an educational resource for everyone in the community. Science is ever changing. We’re not constrained to a fixed number of topics. It can be anything and everything. It’s living.”
The North Museum hosts more than 35,000 visitors annually, the majority of whom come from within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster. The North Museum has become a popular destination for field trips and bus trips alike.
“It’s genuinely inquisitive people,” said Downs. “They are people who are passionate about the museum because we have been doing it for so long. When parents bring kids to the museum, it’s an opportunity to explore together. It’s not just mom and dad bringing kids and letting them roam around the museum.”
“For me, the best thing is when
I hear the noise of the kids,” Downs continued. “I hear kids teaching each other, discovering things and having a great time. It reminds me of why I do it. I’m with an organization that preserves the past, looks to the future, and we sell education and fun.”
The North Museum, which was established in 1953, employs nine full-time staffers and 12 part-timers. The facility is funded through donations, sponsorships, government grants, admission fees and paid programming.
“I like to call us the Little Museum Who Could,” said Downs.
“There is no shortage of big ideas and big accomplishments here. We continue to change and evolve. There’s always something new and fresh to see with us. We partner with so many different organizations throughout the community. We also help bridge the gap between education and industry.”
“We really try to create access for everybody and create opportunities for everyone,” added Downs. “That’s a big part of our mission too.” For additional information about the North Museum of Nature and Science, go to www.northmu seum.org.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election
save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
you had

for newlyweds to exchange vows and for project managers to escape their offices, historians claim that the idyllic setting was once a Civil War-era outpost and a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Drumore Mill’s current owner, Thuy Hoang, stumbled upon the property in 2015 while she was searching for a new home with her husband. At the time, Hoang and her husband were working in the medical field, but Hoang said she had a vision of converting the estate to a wedding venue upon discovering it. The endeavor posed many challenges, and the process of bringing the residential buildings up to par as a commercial property took roughly eight and a half years. “We wanted to do it the right way, and we tried to make sure we reserved as much of the mill’s history as possible,” Hoang said.
were completed and Drumore Mill opened for business, the venue has been primarily rented by patrons who travel from other states to experience a slice of Southern End beauty. “The main appeal is the waterfall, as well as the hiking trail, cliffs and the chapel,” Hoang said. “It’s just a place to come together and to be with nature.”
One by one, Hoang completed renovations in each building on the property, salvaging as much of the Drumore Mill’s original architecture and character as possible. Hoang also installed rocks to define several old trails and pathways scattered in the woods on the property. Since the renovations
Adam Zurn, a local history buff and educator who runs the website Uncharted Lancaster, visited Drumore Mill for the first time during its grand opening event a few years ago. After taking a guided tour of the estate that mentioned Drumore Mill’s supposed ties to the Underground Railroad, Zurn started digging into old archives to see what other secrets the property might contain. Many lifelong residents of the area shared stories about an outpost near the waterfall; according to legend, the cliff was used by soldiers during the Civil War, and there is a carving somewhere on the rockface that reads “Union Forever, Death to Traitors.” Zurn said he has yet to see the carving with his own eyes, but perhaps he’ll put on his adventuring fedora and scale the cliff someday to find out.
The waterfall at Drumore Mill is one of the property’s most scenic attractions.

Kelly’s Run
currently includes a pollinator meadow, verdant woodlands and a glen populated with native rhododendrons.
“We’re always looking at what’s adjacent to our nature preserves when starting a new project. We want to make sure we can connect them to the landscape and other preserves, protecting as many water resources as we can,” said Kathie Gonick, Lancaster Conservancy’s senior vice president of land protection and general counsel. “Kelly’s Run is a beautiful stream. This buffer of forest will keep it clean and clear, as well as a better habitat for creatures.”
During the surge of visitors during the pandemic, Gonick said she and other Lancaster Conservancy staff members would frequently volunteer to spend their weekends at Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve, offering infor -
mation to hikers and answering questions. Gonick added that the preserve’s proximity to Pinnacle Scenic Overlook Nature Preserve, in addition to its scenic vistas and conveniently accessible parking lot, contribute to the popularity of Kelly’s Run. Pinnacle Scenic Overlook became part of the Susquehannock State Park two years ago, after Lancaster Conservancy transferred stewardship of the property to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Now that the expansion project at Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve is officially underway, Lancaster Conservancy will proceed with its next phase, which will entail thorough documentation of the property and research on its natural resources prior to the acquisition. Once the property is acquired, the conservancy’s
land acquisition will include an additional portion of
stewardship department will start developing a plan to ensure that the addition can seamlessly integrate with the existing land.
Lancaster Conservancy estimates that the project will take a few years to complete.
Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve is open to visitors daily from dawn until dusk, and parking is available at the intersection of Street Road and Crystal Drive.
