All auction activities will be located in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The event was moved to the Kreider Building because it is larger than the Hoffman Building, where the event was previously held, and has side doors and windows that can be opened. This will make social distancing possible and ensure the venue is wellventilated as part of COVID-19 mitigation recommendations. “We are asking people to be mindful of the health and safety of others,” said Kim Risk, who is co-chair of the auction with Carol Gibson. Also due to mitigation, the Solanco High School post prom committee will not provide a meal on Nov. 13. However, on Nov. 14, the group will sell popcorn and cupcakes and a food truck will offer hot food and beverages. See SECA Auction pg 8

Pennsylvania has participated in the national exchange run by the federal government, Healthcare.gov. This year, Pennsylvania is running its own, said Kathy Trapp, a senior agent with US Health Advisors, a division of UnitedHealthcare, who is based in Camp Hill. “With Healthcare.gov, you could call the number, talk to a person, and ask questions, and they’d walk you through the programs. They’re welltrained,” Trapp commented. “Will Pennie have the same (quality of service)? The change is designed to be a

Buying health insurance - even without navigating a new website - can be challenging, as there are many options to consider. Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Get Away To Jim Thorpe Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline.

She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, cofounded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it

It’s a stepping stone to creating a winning culture.” One night later, the Mules battled Octorara on a night they celebrated seniors Cody Little, Colin Moran and James Steffy. “These seniors have committed a lot of time and effort to the program,” said Smith. “I am thankful for their commitment during the most unprecedented time in their lives. We wish them nothing but the best.” Despite their 0-11-1 overall record, the Mules finished with 12 goals this season and suffered just five shutouts. Yoder was tops with four goals while Robillard scored three times and dished out two assists. Baber and Trent McDowell both scored twice with McDowell also collecting two assists.

“We definitely competed this year,” said Smith. “Tough competition is making us better. Each player has grown through the season. We have a concept and are putting that concept into play. Our record doesn’t reflect the outcome of some of our games,” he continued. “I am extremely confident in the growth we can continue to make and then sustain. I look forward to having an off-season with them and preparing for the 2021 season.” FOOTBALL Solanco’s 31-7 loss to Conestoga Valley October 23 forced a three-way log jam for second place in Section Two. Solanco fumbled the kickoff after Johnson’s first score and the Bucks took advantage, settling for a 29-yard field goal and a 10-0 first quarter lead. The Bucks extended their lead with Macoy Kneisley’s 22-yard strike to Zach Fisher early in the second. The visitors countered with their only score of the night, Mason St. Clair’s 29-yard toss to Elijah Cunningham. St. Clair fueled Solanco’s 154 rushing yards with 85. Robert Castagna rushed for 41 yards and Ronnie Fulton added 31. Defensively, Josiah Forren was a one man wrecking crew, piling up 12 solo tackles. Seth Harnish chipped in with eight. overall. The Mares put forth a balanced effort in their 4-0 win over visiting Lebanon. Four different players contributed to Solanco scoring once in every quarter. Maggie Hirst, Emma Curtis (with her first goal of the season), Haylee Byers and Kayla McCauley all found the back of the cage with Rebecca Bruno picking up two assists and Mariah Stoltzfus adding another. “Kayla scored our first goal on a scramble and Maggie made it 2-0. She took the corner shot right to the far post,” recalled head coach Whitney Hawkins. “Haylee crashed the pads for our third goal and Emma, who usually plays defense, was given the opportunity to score. We really wanted her to score and everyone went crazy after that. It was an awesome way to end the season,” she added. “I know I will remember it for the rest of my coaching career. Losing eight senior starters will be tough but they have all been great role models. We will miss them terribly.”

three seniors in their last home game, Wednesday, October 28 and sent them out with a 2-1 victory over Donegal. “Our seniors (Paige Balliet, Sammi Jackson and Nikki Trout) have been with the program since seventh grade and played together in youth soccer long before that,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “They have seen it all from a Solanco soccer prospective. They remember some of the tough losses just a few short years ago, but also remember the feeling of scoring the winning goal against the No. 1 team in the district last year,” he added. “We did not get the results we planned and hoped for this year, but it is satisfying to know that they will have those memories and that they can look back and remember what they accomplished on the soccer field.” Grace Unger’s header with 25:14 left in the first half put the home team in front while Sammi Jackson delivered the game-winner with 3:38 left in the game. Assisted by

Josie Janssen, Jackson lofted a high shot that sailed over the keeper’s hands for a 2-0 lead. The Indians, however, returned the favor, cutting the lead in half with a 30 yard shot that sailed high into the upper left corner of the goal. But with just two minutes remaining, Solanco (5-7 overall) remained in front and finished the season with a win.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to

Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is 19th-century entrepreneurs to the a great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful architecture.

area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” See Jim Thorpe pg 11

The popular Broadway Grille & Pub is a favorite for locals and visitors, and Stella’s Secret Speakeasy above Tony Stella’s Encore restaurant is the perfect place for an evening cocktail; just make sure you know the password. Dutch Apple To Stage “Elf The Musical” “Elf the Musical,” based on the film “Elf,” will play at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021. This musical comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his identity and help New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas. As a young orphan, Buddy crawls into Santa’s bag and winds up in the North Pole, where he is raised, unaware that he is human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to discover his identity. For the second time in his career, Kole Mitchell McKinley will play the part of Buddy the Elf. McKinley is from North Carolina and is a graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical performance theater. Although new to the Dutch Apple stage, he appeared in Dutch Apple’s virtual cabaret series this spring. Performances will be on Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. There will be separate dinner and show ticket pricing See “Elf” pg 16

“Radium Girls from pg 5 the story of dial painters for the corporation who fall ill as a result of radium poisoning and the corporation’s attempts to hide the truth. One of the dial painters, Grace Fryer, fights for her day in court, while U.S. Radium Corporation head Arthur Roeder uses every obstacle at his disposal to make the case stall long enough so that the witnesses die before the trial can begin. Lance Workman, who was cast as Roeder, said close attention to detail is needed to effectively portray the deep emotion involved in the play, and among those details are body language and posturing. In preparing to present the play, students were required to learn body

language and human interaction characteristics from 100 years ago. “It’s important to do it right to demonstrate what the real radium girls were feeling, remarked Mallory Sturgill, who portrays Fryer. “Radium Girls will be presented live in the auditorium of the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Attendees will be required to wear masks, and social distancing will be in effect as seating will be limited to 150 people, which is 20% capacity of the auditorium. Admission tickets may be purchased at the door prior to each performance, and separate prices have been set for adults and for students See “Radium Girls pg 16
