The staff members at Smith Middle School who were consulted about the annual Coats for Kids collection could not readily say how long the event has been held. “I remember doing it when I was here (as a student) in 2001,” said Liz Stevens, who now works at the school as a secretary. Stevens clearly recalls that she was in sixth grade that year, noting that the drive was held soon after 9/11. Admittedly, she said, participating in the outerwear collection efforts was just another part of school life, but with time and perspective has come a greater appreciation for the event. “I think it’s an amazing outreach to the community,” Stevens remarked. “There’s so much of a need.”

School counselor Caitie DeSimone shared that almost half of the students in the Solanco School District receive free or reduced-price lunches and even more may qualify. “There’s always a need for kids’ coats, even heavy sweaters,” DeSimone said. New or gently used coats, jackets, heavy sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens suitable for children and adults of all sizes may be dropped off at any Solanco school, including Smith, through Wednesday, Nov. 13. Mares Battle Barons in District Semifinals battle in the consolations for a chance to finish third, to one and two respectively. FOOTBALL With a Section Two title on the line, Manheim Central traveled to Quarryville Friday, Oct. 25th and took care of business, working a come-from-behind 49-20 win over the Mules. Colby Wagner hauled in nine passes for 244 yards and Evan Simon completed 20 of 29 attempts for 347 yards to spark the Barons to their fifth straight section title and 24th Section Two win in a row. “I thought we came out and played hard,” said head coach Tony Cox. “I thought we should have scored a couple more but a penalty and a couple of wide open passes that didn’t connect kept us out of the end zone.” Manheim quickly went to work, needing just three plays to hit paydirt. The PAT was blocked but the Barons had a 6-0 lead. Their second drive stalled and Solanco, behind some key runs by Nick Yannutz (122 yards on 19 carries), took advantage, eventually scoring on a one-yard plunge by Rashawn Carter. Trent McDowell kicked the extra point and Solanco held a 7-6 led with four minutes left in the first quarter. The Barons, with a 74-yard pass and run by Colby Wagner, regained the lead with 16 seconds left in the quarter and extended the advantage to 21-7 with a 10-yard strike from Simon to Grube with 10:03 left in the second frame. Undeterred, the Mules fought back. Yannutz and Grady Unger (101 yards on 28 carries), who returned under center after missing the last game, led Solanco’s rushing attack, which gained 237 yards on the ground. Unger’s 17-yard burst with 6:46 left in the half cut the lead to 21-14. Manheim returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards and two plays later hit paydirt again with a 24-yard run by Simon. They went on to score three more times before Solanco wrapped up the action with another Unger score, this one a two-yard burst with 8:52 left. “We’re a young team and we made some young mistakes,” said Cox. “We have three kids that went from junior high to varsity and they went up against a powerhouse program. I felt we competed with Manheim. We had a couple sacks and I think we gained a lot of confidence,” he continued. “We lost 27 seniors and came back to finish 5-5 and make playoffs. This is a great experience for the young kids. They just never quit and our seniors have done a great job. They’re the most vocal seniors I’ve had in a while.” Mason St. Clair and senior Chad Carter were defensive standouts with a combined 15 tackles. The motto of Providence Building Supply (PBS), 796 Lancaster Pike, Quarryville, is “PBS … where building your business is our business.” The retailer of hardware, household supplies, paint, pet care products, gardening supplies, power tools, and more is dedicated to meeting contractors’ and homeowners’ needs, but it aims to meet the needs of a nonprofit as well. From Monday to Saturday, Nov. 18 to 23, community members are invited to bring specific kinds of nonperishable food items to PBS to fill Thanksgiving meal boxes that will be distributed by Martic Pantry. The food drive is a first for Martic Pantry, which was launched by Steve and Mary Lehman several years ago. The organization provides qualifying Martic Township residents with preloaded cards that can be used to purchase necessities at Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood. Steve explained that he got the idea after visiting families on behalf of River Corner Mennonite Church. Traditional food bank models do not often offer flexibility in what they can give clients, as he learned one evening. “At one house, they said they had lots of green beans, but their children preferred corn. A few houses down, those children liked green beans, but all they had was corn,” Steve related.

Grocery shopping at Martic Store with the equivalent of a debit card gives individuals dignity, Steve said, adding, “They can pick out what they want. They have a sense of pride that they’re buying food for their families, and if other people are in the store at the same time, they can (discreetly) use their card.” Martic Pantry typically serves between 15 and 20 households each month, but due to moves and one death, the organization is currently serving 13 clients. The organization plans to distribute 20 Thanksgiving meal boxes, which will include turkeys donated by the Frogtown Foundation and a variety of sides to round out the holiday meal. “We will include families who have graduated from our program but whom we know a holiday box would lighten their load,” Mary said. Typically, Martic Pantry purchases the box contents - except for the turkeys - using funds raised through four chicken barbecue events. This year will be the first time that a food drive has been held for the occasion. “We thought it would be a way to give back to the community,” said Dawn Ressler of PBS, who credited hardware professionalist Terri Landis for suggesting Martic Pantry as the beneficiary. To inspire participation in the food drive, PBS will give donors 10% off their purchases, up to $10,

CASA Information Sessions Slated Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lancaster County (CASA) will host information sessions on how to become a court appointed special advocate for a child in the foster care system in Lancaster County. The sessions are free of charge and open to the public. An information session will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster. A second session will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Both sessions will run from noon to 1 p.m. Foster care is meant to be a temporary intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of a child. CASA volunteers are empowered by the courts to help ensure children find safe, nurturing, and permanent homes. Advocates work oneon-one with a child or group of siblings. They get to know the children, gather important information from reports and professionals, and advocate for the children’s best interests related to their education, health, living arrangements, and general well-being. No prior experience is necessary. CASA will provide all the training needed, and a volunteer supervisor will offer resources and support throughout the volunteers’ service. Volunteer advocates usually dedicate 12 to 15 hours per month to their CASA duties. Preregistration is required to attend an information session. For more information or to register, readers may contact CASA at 717-208-3280 or casa@casalancaster.org. To learn more, readers may visit www.casalancaster.org.

the event in the first place. “I think it’s cool that it’s come full circle,” Jodi remarked. Haley and Emily, who graduated from Solanco High School in 2015, were in first grade when they decided that, rather than having a traditional birthday party with lots of gifts, they wanted to have a roller-skating party. If guests wanted to bring gifts, the items would be donated to other children who did not have an abundance of toys. “We didn’t want all those presents,” Haley recalled. The idea was a hit, and guests looked forward to the parties every year. The twins continued to ask for gifts for others, and clients of the Quarryville office of Community Action Program (CAP) were the beneficiaries of the largesse at Christmastime. When the girls turned 13, they held a sleepover instead of a skating party. Recognizing that with a smaller group of attendees, the donations would

“We couldn’t do this without the support of (the community),” Haley said. Since the discontinuation of the Quarryville CAP office’s involvement in the program, the Solanco Toy Drive has been held in conjunction with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Recipients are screened by the organization and given vouchers that can be redeemed for three gifts and some stocking stuffers. Last year, the drive served 186 children, and the Conklins expect to serve about that many youngsters again this year. Donations of new, unwrapped toys for children from birth to age 12 will be accepted through Wednesday, Dec. 11, and the distribution will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Nickel Mine Floor Covering, 359 Buck Road, Quarryville. “(Ages) 8 to 12 is always hard (to serve). We don’t get enough in donations for those ages,” Jodi said, noting that toys made by

Nerf and Lego, as well as sports equipment, crafting supplies, jewelry, and makeup, seem to work well for that age group. Gift cards redeemable for music and electronic gaming are also desirable gifts. Items may be dropped off at Nickel Mine, as well as at Conklin Media, 823 Lancaster Pike, Quarryville; The Daily Grind, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville; and Quarryville Family Restaurant, 134 E. State St., Quarryville. Additionally, those who bring items to the Solanco High School girls’ basketball games on Tuesday and Thursday, Dec. 10 and 12, will receive free admission to the games. Jodi noted that while community donations are an important part of the Solanco Toy Drive, funds raised through an annual ham dinner hosted by Steve and Deb Amspacher are used to purchase about 85% of the gifts that are distributed each year. “It’s always packed,” Jodi said of the meal. “They heard about (the toy drive) through an Adver-

tiser (article), and they wanted to do something for it.” This year’s dinner will be held from 5:30 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville. The menu will include ham, green beans, potatoes, and desserts. Beer, wine, and soda will be included, or guests may bring their own libations. In addition to the meal, the event will include dancing and opportunities to win prizes. A set price has been set for attendance, and all guests must bring a new, unwrapped toy. Reservations must be paid in advance. Attendance is limited to 220 people, and guests must be 21 or older. Readers may contact the Amspachers at 717-786-3464 or debsteve@epix.net to make reservations. Financial contributions to the Solanco Toy Drive may be delivered to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, 355 Buck Road, Quarryville. To learn more about the event, readers may call Jodi at 717-475-0403.

Baked goods have been pledged for the event to satisfy hungry bidders. Grandma Strom’s Sandtarts will deliver goodies, and Melissa’s Country Grill is slated to bring fresh pies. Tawn Battiste has promised to supply a basket of pumpkin yumminess. Other friends and supporters will supply baked goods and other treats as well. Additionally, the Solanco post prom committee will sell spaghetti dinners from 5 to 7 p.m. Proceeds from sales of pasta and sauce, rolls, salad, applesauce, and cookies will be used to create an enticing and exciting prom after-party for Solanco High School seniors and their guests in May 2020. Takeouts will be available as well. Historically held over the course of two days, this is the second year that the auction will take place on just one night. The silent auction has added another facet to the event as well. “Having it all in one day seemed to bring out a bigger crowd (last year),” Gibson remarked. “People were really receptive to the silent auction.” The proceeds from the event will support SECA’s programs and general operations. Repairs are slated for the skate rink and the SECA building, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Fundraisers

enable SECA to offer some events for free, including a family candy bingo and Cookies With Santa that will be held in the coming months. Director Rick Kerns, who was hired after the previous director, Nicole Luecker, took a job with another recreation commission, said that new programs will be rolled out for the spring. In the meantime, a teen trivia event is planned in January, and a trivia night for adults is in the works as well. “We had so much fun at the last one,” Gibson said of the previous trivia night for adults. For the youngest residents, administrative assistant Celeste Esposito noted that SECA is hoping to get a preschool program going. An event will be held at the SECA building on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for children ages 3 to 6 and accompanying adults. The event will include stories, a take-home craft, and a snack. Those who plan to attend are asked to contact SECA at 717-806-0123 or seca@epix.net to indicate how many children they will be bringing. For more information about the auction or SECA events and programs, readers may visit www.secarec.org. Drawn from primary sources, “Thanksgiving Exposed” is a live re-enactment of the history of the Pilgrims. The guided tours will take guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ as the focal point for all of history. Guests will then learn about the Magna Carta, the Bible’s translation into English by John Wycliffe, and the Gutenberg Press. “Thanksgiving Exposed” will include a replica of the Wittenberg doors that guests will step through to move into an area focused on the Reformation. After learning about persecution in England and the rise of the Separatists, guests will visit six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations will tell the Pilgrims’ story from their beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. Finally, guests will learn about how the Pilgrims created their own model of self-government. Making Plans To Return To Vietnam

Where Building Your Business Is Our Business

At Garden Spot High School (GSHS), teacher Lei Williams teaches English as a second language. Williams was born in Vietnam, and she has relatives there. In 2015, Williams first organized for a group of GSHS students to visit Vietnam. In the summer of 2019, she led a second group of students to the country. In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. The organization’s educational committee visits nearly 20 middle and high schools a year, giving as many as 30 living history presentations. “Sometimes we have lunch, and teachers join us,” said Douglas Kelly, president of the chapter. During lunch in May, Williams talked to the veterans and asked if anyone in the group would like to return to Vietnam. Later on, she contacted Kelly, and fundraising efforts to make

from that evening will go to Chapter 1008. Ron Horn, who served in the Navy in Vietnam, became curious about young people in Vietnam who have been affected by Agent Orange when he heard Garden Spot students talk about their trip. Horn, who lost a lung because of his exposure to Agent Orange, which he explained can be passed to one’s children, has three grown children. He explained that more than a dozen ailments have been linked to Agent Orange exposure in the second generation. Rich Mellott, who served in the Army, would like to see people he knows in Vietnam and visit the places he was stationed. “I want to see Hill 55,” he stated. When Mellott was there two years ago, he went to Tuy Hòa, near where his base camp was located. “That hadn’t changed,” he stated. “But Quy Nhon was a fishing village, and now they have high-rise motels and a 16foot-wide boardwalk.” Charlie Miller, who served as a Marine, struggled with articulating his reasons for going. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “I have a history.” Miller noted that he was badly wounded in Vietnam, but he also lost a brother to the war. “I always wanted to go back, (but) I can’t really explain it,” he said. “It will be tough, but I just want to go over.” Williams said that the group has also contacted area businesses seeking support. Readers who would like to know more may visit www.vva-avva1008.org or contact Kelly at 717-394-2448 or PresidentVVA1008@gmail.com.

“Veterans, Values, And Voices” To Showcase Military Experience By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar

event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program. “Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life

to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.” Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said. Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical. “There’s

so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent Orange side effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event. Admission to “Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take place in the Ware Center’s 400-seat Steinman Hall, and the organizers hope to have a capacity crowd. “We want them to see the value of what we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined to support it,” Ginder said. “It’s all about getting a better (sense) of the veteran experience, getting the general public to understand that in a better way,” Hower remarked, adding that he plans to speak about the time he accidentally wandered into an anti-war rally in Chicago while wearing a military uniform in 1972. For more information about Writeface, readers may visit www.writeface.org or contact Hower at Scotthower@aol.com or 717-209-0410 or Ginder at 717799-0154 or annie.ginder @comcast.net.
