Fire company will host free community meal on Thanksgiving
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Every November, families and friends across the United States gather around a dinner table to share hearty dishes and express their gratitude in celebration of Thanksgiving. For many people, the holiday is an opportunity to reunite with loved ones, recognize the blessings in their lives and, of course, eat stuffing and mashed potatoes until they can’t move. But for some, Thanksgiving is one of the most difficult days of the year, and many Americans spend the holiday alone or without a decent meal.
“The firehouse is our home, and we want to invite the community
in.”
Two years ago, Alicia Doss found herself in possession of
more turkeys than she knew what to do with. Doss, who serves as Robert Fulton Fire Company’s auxiliary president, works as a housecleaner, and multiple clients had gifted her a turkey for Thanksgiving. Doss and her mother, Marsha Roten, decided to use the surplus of meals to start what has grown into an annual tradition of hosting a free Thanksgiving meal for the community. “I do all of the hall rentals for the firehouse, so I thought, ‘Why don’t I open this up to the public?’” Doss said. “We’re all unpaid volunteers, so the community supports us and helps us stay open. I wanted to give back, and it was laid on my heart to do.”

The Lancaster County Garden Club will hold a banquet to celebrate its 90th anniversary at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Willows at Historic Strasburg, 1500 Drive, Strasburg. The event will include an educational presentation from garden writer and historian Kirk Brown, door prizes, a buffet-style dinner and a vote to elect the club’s officers.
The banquet will begin with a social and cash bar, and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Meal options will include salad, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, chicken breast, homemade stuffing, crusted haddock and vegetarian lasagna. Dessert and beverages will include apple crisp, cookies, coffee, hot tea, lemonade and special cupcakes made to celebrate the 90th anniversary.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, students and staff members at Solanco High School will participate in Day of Service, a schoolwide effort to make a positive impact in the local community and its surrounding regions. In lieu of completing standard classroom lessons, more than 800 students will spend the day working on group projects to benefit specific parts of the community such as service organizations, local conservation groups and seniors.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing
save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
BART TOWNSIP FIRE COMPANY ANNUAL SHOOTING MATCH
Robert Fulton Fire Company, 2271 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, will host the free community dinner from noon to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28. The meal will include traditional Thanksgiving dishes such as turkey, ham, potatoes, string beans and stuffing, as well as desserts and various refreshments. Meals will be available for dine-in only, and guests are invited to enjoy fellowship in the banquet hall while they savor the dinner.
Although the fire company was not officially involved with organizing the first meal, it allowed Doss and Roten to rent the banquet hall free of charge. Many of Doss’ friends and firefighters at the station started helping the mother and daughter duo by donating food, money and their time to assist with the second community meal in 2023. The number of attendees nearly doubled by the second

year, and local businesses owners started contacting Doss to support the event as it grew larger. Last year, Doss said that many guests stayed long after they finished eating to talk and enjoy each other’s company, and some told her they wouldn’t have had anywhere to spend the holiday without the event. Doss added that she expects the number of attendees to be much higher this year.
“Essentially, the firehouse is our home, and we want to invite the community in,” said Doss. “We’re a big family, and I love it.” Doss added that she couldn’t have organized the annual meal without the steadfast support of her family members and friends as the event continues to grow larger.

Volunteer readers sought for Ag Literacy Week
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is seeking volunteer readers for its ninth annual Ag Literacy Week, which is set to occur from Monday to Friday, March 17 to 21. Volunteers from communities across the state will visit classrooms and other student groups to read the book “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” and talk about local farming.
Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community to local classrooms to share the story of agriculture. Readers have the opportunity to talk about farming and agriculture through the book they read as well as sharing their own story about farming, agricul -
ture programs they are involved with, or their connections to agriculture. After each reading event, volunteers donate a copy of the book and educational activities to the classroom to be used throughout the year and with future classes. More than 2,000 copies of the book will be presented in classrooms in Pennsylvania this year.
“The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” explores the joys of planting a garden, nurturing and harvesting food, and recycling scraps to compost, ensuring that the cycle of growth and sustainability continues. Scientific facts about soil, plants, pollinators, decomposers, and more are included on every spread. The book encourages young readers to become environmental stewards, learn how to care for a garden, understand a plant life cycle, and discover the power of pollinators and the importance of composting.
To register as a volunteer reader by Friday, Dec. 13, or to learn more, visit www.pfb friends.com/ag-literacy-week/.
The Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is a charitable organization supported by the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. The foundation has been educating the public and promoting agriculture since its inception in 1986. To learn more about foundation programs, go to www.pfbfriends.com.

During the presentation, “Muhlenberg Recreating Eden,” Brown will portray botanist and preacher Henry Muhlenberg to highlight his life and work. Muhlenberg served as the pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Lancaster city from 1780 to 1815, and he became the first president of Franklin & Marshall College, which was called Franklin College at the time. Brown will explore Muhlenberg’s prolific research and catalog of local flora and fauna through a first-person account.
Although Lancaster County Garden Club’s membership includes avid horticulturists and plant enthusiasts from across the county, the group holds its regular meetings at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. Meetings take place on the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m., and each meeting features a topic related to horticulture. During meetings, members display items such as floral arrangements, potted plants and paintings of garden landscapes, club’s leadership provides updates on upcoming field trips and garden tours. Each meeting includes a presentation from a guest speaker centered around the theme of the month.
In addition to the resources available to the Lancaster County Garden Club’s members and visitors from the community, the organization’s monthly meetings and special events provide a space for participants to learn from other gardeners and exchange techniques and tips. Manor Township resident Ruth Davis, who joined the club 25 years ago and currently serves as its president, said that the camaraderie between members is her favorite aspect of the Lancaster County Garden Club. “We share a wealth of knowledge, but I enjoy making friends, talking and visiting their gardens,” Ruth added.
Ruth’s husband, Bob Davis, coordinates the Lancaster County Garden Club’s programs and annual events, including an annual
banquet and a corn roast every August. Ruth and Bob share a love of conifers and trees, and they tend to 16 acres of land near Millersville.
“We have a bit of an arboretum,” Bob said.
The Lancaster County Garden Club was started by a group of businessmen who enjoyed growing roses, and it was known as
the Men’s Garden Club until 2009. Since 1951, the club’s members have tended the rose garden in Buchanan Park - a scenic location that former mayor Rick Gray referred to as the most beautiful place in Lancaster city.

and have a positive impact,” said Solanco High School principal Scott Long. “We want to make sure that all of our students, no matter their situations, have a chance to do
good in the community.”
In preparation for Day of Service, every teacher at the high school was tasked with finding an activity that would serve the

community. Some teachers will take their groups of students off campus to work with local nonprofits or nearby elementary schools, while others will have their groups complete projects in other parts of the building. After each teacher decided on a project, students signed up for one activity to participate in during the event.
The first Day of Service was organized in 2017 by a teacher leadership group at the high school. Members of the group proposed the event as a way to not only benefit the community, but to unify the student body and switch up the standard daily routine. Long, who was assistant principal at the time, said the first Day of Service was a huge success. “We noticed some kids were a little hesitant at first, but by the end of the day, they felt good about the work they had done,” Long added. “Some are
excited for this year, and others are getting out of their comfort zone, but I fully anticipate they’ll feel great by 2 p.m.”
After the last Day of Service was held in 2018, teachers decided to make the event a biennial occurrence. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the school was unable to host its next scheduled Day of Service in 2020. Long said that members of the school’s leadership and staff have been wanting to bring the event back to campus since the pandemic, and they felt it was finally the right time to resurrect the tradition this year.
“It’s always been on the radar, and I give credit to my teachers and leaders in the building,” said Long. “We’re in a good place with great staff members and great students.”
For more information about Day of Service or how to support teachers’ service projects, email Long at scott_long@solancosd.org.
