Thespians To Stage Comedic Play By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“We want to get the word out: It’s a funny play,” said John Biles, director of Solanco High School’s production of “The Imaginary Invalid” by Molière. “It’s a farce. It’s all comedy. It’s not a tragedy whatsoever.” Although written in French in 1673, the play has been translated into English and adapted by Milles Malleson, and it now takes place in America in the 1920s. Wealthy Argan (Patrick Hodgson) imagines himself an invalid. He is fixated on his physical condition and hopes that by arranging for his eldest daughter, Angelica (Beth West), to marry a doctor, he will receive free medical care. Meanwhile,

Angelica falls in love with the artist Cleante (Gabe LaMonaca), and Argan’s second wife, Beline (Abby Golden), cannot wait for Argan to die so she can seize his fortune. “I’ve never played an antagonist like this before, but she’s so fun to play,” Abby said of Beline. “I try to be kind all day, but it’s fun to come to practice and play the villain.” Biles noted that in the time period in which the play has been reset, the influenza epidemic has just subsided and at that time, folks were more likely to be killed than helped by a doctor. Argan’s maid, Toinette (Emily Herr), toys with her employer and enacts trickery by pretending to be a male doctor. See “The Imaginary Invalid” pg 9

Solanco High School thespians will perform Molière’s “The Imaginary Invalid” on Nov. 14, 15, 16, and 17.

Mules Blank Waynesboro in District Opener by Mona Steinhauer

With a less than ideal forecast looming and Solanco set to open district play, head coach Tony Cox kept his eye on the radar all week. So they

the kids were frustrated that we kept fumbling in practice,” said Cox. “But we didn’t have a single fumble against Waynesboro and sometimes it was raining so hard I couldn’t see across the field.” The Mules shook off a 2.5 hour bus ride, handled the weather conditions and rushed their way to a lopsided 49-0 shutout over their hosts in the District Three Class 5A first-round game. Waynesboro (6-5) won their last three games to jump to No. 7 in the district bracket. It was the first time in school history that they earned a home playoff game. The Mules, for the second time in program history, and the first since 2015, advanced to the quarterfinals where a rematch against No. 2 seed Cocalico (8-2) awaits this Friday. “The kids were focused,” stated Cox. “They were ready to play. And we’re certainly excited to have another shot at Cocalico.” Nick Yannutz spearheaded Solanco’s 403-rushing yards with 209 yards on 20 rushes and Joel McGuire added 120 yards on 14 rain-soaked carries. The pair also scored three touchdowns each. With the rains limiting the passing game, Waynesboro finished with 204 yards on the ground and were led by Quentin Gaskill’s 98-yards on nine carries. The Mules kick started their offense with an early defensive stand. Waynesboro moved the ball to the Solanco 7. After two short gains, the drive stalled and a six yard loss made it fourth-and-goal from the 11. Solanco stopped quarterback Jay Alverez at the one with 8:09 left in the quarter and responded with a 99-yard drive that culminated with a 13-yard touchdown run by Yannutz. Logan Yaletchko’s 2-point conversion put the Mules on the board, 8-0. Solanco’s second touchdown of the night was a six-yard keeper by McGuire with a Hayden Fox PAT pushing the lead to 15-0. The Mules got the ball back on downs at the midfield and needed just one play to add to the score. Yannutz broke up the middle with a 49-yard run and another Fox PAT extended the lead, 22-0.

“We win, we keep on going,” “This was a good program win,” said The defense, led by Hunter Shaw’s six tackles, came up big again when Cox. “Everyone got playoff experience. he added. “We lose, we’re done. Waynesboro, on the ensuing possession, fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. Yaletchko, who also recorded one sack, recovered on the 28 and McGuire, on third down, took it 25-yards to the house for a commanding 35 point advantage. The Indians fumbled again, this time on their own 35. After Rashawn Carter’s recovery, Solanco, again, capitalized when McGuire plunged in from the one. Fox booted another PAT and the Mules were up 42-0 with 2:32 left in the half. “We depend on what comes in through the ExtraGive. It’s part of our budget,” said Quarryville Library executive director Sylvia Drennen. “The proceeds will help us add materials and plan programs for next year.” New Hope Community Life Ministry executive director Neil Uniacke noted that while the income from the Extra Give has typically not been exorbitant, it is still greater than the margin in New Hope’s operating budget. He pointed out that because it takes place online, the ExtraGive is a great way for folks who have left the area to give back to organizations they supported when they lived here. “People like what we’re doing,” Uniacke said. “We touch about 700 couples and individuals a year” by providing affordable professional counseling services. “The ExtraGive is good for people who want to support their communities from the comfort of their own homes,” added Nicole Luecker, executive director of Southern End Community Association (SECA). For those who would like to participate in public, both the Quarryville Library and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries will host activities on Nov. 16. The two venues will have computers set up so that folks may submit their donations. Solanco Neighborhood Ministries was formally created in 2012, but its food bank has served the community for 30 years. On Nov. 16, an open house will be held at the headquarters at 355 Buck Road, Quarryville, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Folks may stop in to tour the warehouse, meet staff members and volunteers, learn about the organization’s programs, and enjoy refreshments. “This is our first year in ExtraGive,” said community support specialist Hannah Linde. “We will have our doors open for a long time so we can catch people before and after work.” Donations are not required to attend the open house. “Come just to learn more about what we can do,” Linde invited. Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will offer five programs on Nov. 16. Participation will be free of charge, and all supplies will be provided. As class sizes are limited, folks must register by Wednesday, Nov. 14, by calling the library at 717-7861336 or visiting the front desk.

Building Bridges Foundation, 230 Indian Hill Road, Conestoga, will hold its annual Veterans Day Open House on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will begin with lunch and patriotic music by soloist Stu Huggins, a veteran. A program will start at noon. It will include the national anthem, a welcome from Building Bridges CEO Dale Shaw, and recognition of Lancaster County military services. Lancaster County veterans will participate in a panel interview. David Anderson, founder of Building Bridges Foundation, will recognize people who helped donate gift benches in recognition of military service. The event will also include readings of “In Flanders Fields” and “A Response to Flanders Fields,” a flag raising, and a giveaway drawing. Additionally, the program will include a memorial recognition of veteran Ryan T. Donnelly. Donnelly was born in Passaic, N.J., and graduated from High School North in 2001 before moving to Manchester Township in 2017. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 and quickly earned his way to the Division of Special Warfare, where he served as a special warfare combatant crewman. His unit played a major role in the Middle East combat mission of Operation Enduring Freedom shortly after the 9/11 attacks. He and his fellow crewmen were also responsible for keeping the U.S. Olympic teams and former president George H.W. Bush safe during the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. After discharge from the U.S. Special Forces, Donnelly became

an ultramarathon runner, competing in races up to 150 miles. After nearly losing his life due to blood clots in his lungs, Donnelly set a goal to run the entire 184 miles of the state of New Jersey from the northernmost point of High Point Park to the southernmost point of Cape May Point Park. With a close childhood friend who had become an award-winning director, Donnelly co-produced the documentary “Running the 184” about this endeavor. Donnelly was also a credited motivational speaker and the founder of www.FreeFromHell.com, a social media support website network group for those addicted to drugs and alcohol. He was featured on the Anderson Cooper Show. Donnelly died on Sept. 21, 2018. As a tribute to his life, his family members gifted a memorial contribution to Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm. The contribution of $840 will cover the cost of a six-week series of equine-assisted care purposed to promote recovery, life progress, and satisfaction for a veteran. Building Bridges Foundation is a center of caring for veterans and their families specializing in equine-assisted therapy for individuals and groups, horsemanship, farm operations volunteer opportunities, and veterans helping veterans, providing gathering space and serving as a community service partner. Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes.

“We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to

children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox

they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. Drop-off locations in Lancaster County include the following: LCBC - Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim; Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim; New Life Church, 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster; Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville. To view the times for each location or to find additional drop-off sites in surrounding areas, interested individuals may visit www.samaritanspurse.org /operation-christmas-child/ drop-off-locations/. Additional instructions and suggestions on what to pack in the boxes according to age and gender may also be found at the website. Generally, each box should include one special item, such as a stuffed animal, soccer ball with a pump, or clothing outfit, and then be filled in with other toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.

Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver (left) and secretary Cynthia Evans-Herr have announced the rescheduling of an archery hunt for anterless deer in the park. A drawing for permits will be held on Nov. 19. Willow Street, PA 17584 by Monday, Nov. 19. A drawing will be held at the park barn at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, with Lancaster County treasurer Amber Martin participating. Successful applicants will be notified by mail; those in attendance may obtain their permits that night; at the barn at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26; or on the morning of each hunt day. In addition to establishing the hunting permit, Pequea Township has created permits for firewood and vendors. With a firewood permit, folks may collect downed wood in the park for their personal use. Standing trees may not be cut, and each permit

will allow up to two cords of wood for one fee. Gleaners may not drive into the forests, but wheelbarrows will be allowed. “There’s a lot of hardwood along the roads,” Evans-Herr remarked. “It’s a lot of wood if someone wants to be industrious.” The vendor permit will give permission for sellers to offer food, beverages, or other items at the park. Evans-Herr noted that of the three, this permit has received the most attention on the park’s Facebook page. For more information about the hunt or the permits, readers may call Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board chair Tim Weaver at 717-672-1479.

The response to the archery hunts scheduled for Pequea Township’s Silver Mine Park, 200 Silver Mine Road, Conestoga, was predominantly positive. However, as a result of a legal challenge, the hunt was canceled, and all participants’ entry fees were refunded. Hunters may rejoice, though, as another hunt has been scheduled and a new permitting process has been established. The hunt will be held during the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s late archery season on Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. Hunting will be authorized with a Pequea Township Wildlife Management Archery Hunt permit, and only 96 permits will be issued through a random drawing. Successful applicants must be properly licensed to participate on the days of the hunt. Archery hunters must possess a valid archery license and a valid antlerless deer license for Wildlife Management Unit 5B. A fee for the wildlife management permit was established by the board of supervisors during the Oct. 17 public meeting.

The decision to host the hunt in the 67-acre north portion of the park was approved unanimously by the board of supervisors. Cynthia Evans-Herr, vice chair of the board of supervisors and secretary of the Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board, noted that the park and the surrounding community are overrun by deer. According to her research, 640 acres of land are needed to healthfully sustain 30 deer. In comparison, more than 30 deer have been counted in the park. When the deer are not destroying farmers’ corn and soybean crops, they are eating the native plants in the forests, making room for the invasion of nonnative species. “Our forest is full of invasives,” Evans-Herr lamented. “We need to do what is necessary to manage our resources.” Hunters who want to purchase a wildlife permit must submit a standard postcard with their name, complete mailing address, phone number, hunting license number, and anterless deer license number for Wildlife Management Unit 5B, as well as the words “Wildlife Management Archery Hunt - Late Season.” Only one application per hunter may be submitted. The cards must be mailed to Pequea Township, 1028 Millwood Road,

“They protect us and take care of us, so I think it’s important that we show them respect. It’s an honor to do it.” Military veterans will be admitted to the breakfast free of charge. Fees have been set for admission for all other individuals and for takeouts. Swisher noted that the special division supports the fire company through fundraising. The group meets at the fire hall on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to attend. The proceeds from the breakfast will be used for “whatever (we) need and the upkeep of the kitchen,” Swisher said. “It all goes back into the fire company.” There will be a wide variety of food served buffet-style at the meal, including sausage, bacon, ham, scrapple, chipped beef gravy, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, pancakes, pastries, juice, and coffee. Volunteers will begin cooking at 4 a.m. in order to have everything ready in time for

hungry diners. Fire company member Debbie Hoover reported that more than 300 people attended last year’s breakfast. Additionally, the fire company will host a craft show on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of 40 vendors will sell unique items; direct sales vendors will not be part of the event. “The Imaginary Invalid from pg 1 “Toinette is very clever and kind of sneaky at times, and the doc can be that way too, Emily remarked. “Playing another gender is interesting. I can be more loud and exuberant. Cleante also assumes another identity, posing as a music master to get closer to Angelica. “He’s not a con artist. He’s a suave individual who’s very in love with Angelica, Gabe said. “He’s a very sarcastic character, and I’m a sarcastic person, so it’s very enjoyable to play (Cleante). “(Angelica) is not dumb, but she’s somewhat powerless in her situation, Beth commented. “She’s really dramatic, which makes her fun to act. She also has a friendship with the maid, which I really like. Although “The Imaginary Invalid is a play, not a musical, a

restrooms planned for the atrium lobby will provide 13 additional facilities. The atrium lobby bar will be a centerpiece for gathering before, during, and after performances. An intimate, private gathering area on the second floor will feature a refreshment area, a restroom, and a coat room to host the Fulton Theatre’s Producer’s Circle members as well as private parties for the community. A performance and rehearsal studio will allow the Fulton to rehearse full productions onsite. The space will feature sprung dance floors and mirrors and will be two stories in height to accommodate all choreographic needs. The rehearsal and performance studio will be able to be transformed into an event space for both Fulton patrons and the community. The space will hold up to 200 people. The exterior of the new rehearsal space also creates an architectural element to Water Street and continues the beautification of Water Street through to the Ware Center. The Fulton Theatre will continue to operate on its normal schedule throughout construction, and productions will not be interrupted. The project in total will have a $29 million budget, which includes a $5 million endowment. As of Aug. 31, the Fulton has raised $21 million. Donations to the campaign can be made at the Fulton Theatre’s Box Office, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster; by visiting www.fultonbreakout.org; or by contacting a member of the Breakout Performance team at 717-394-7133.

The Fulton Theatre has announced plans for the organization’s upcoming expansion, reported on the projected economic impact of the project after completion, and has given a detailed funding report for the campaign, also known as the Fulton Theatre’s Breakout Performance. The first stage of construction, including updated stage rigging and upgrades to both stage lighting and sound, was recently completed in advance of the Fulton’s premiere of “Treasure Island. Phase one is continuing this fall with a focus on the West King Street portion of the city block. King Street construction includes plans to rebuild the historic storefronts on the 100 block of West King Street. The top three floors will provide onsite housing for visiting artists to the Fulton stage with newly renovated apartment spaces, while the first floor will support new retail opportunities. On-site actor housing will be expanded to 26 artist apartments, which include one-bedroom apartments, spacious star apartments, and comfortable studio apartments. The Fulton’s guest artists often stay at the theater for six to 12 weeks to prepare and perform in productions. Beginning late 2019, the expansion will focus on the north side of the city block with the several construction plans. Plans include a sky-lit atrium lobby that will bridge the theater’s existing lobby and the Fulton’s education building on Grant Street. The expanded space will allow up to 1,400 patrons to gather. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program.

SATURDAY, NOV. 17, 2018 AT 9 A.M.

Rotary Club of Lancaster past president Lisa Groff (fourth from left) and Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza chairman William Marshall (fourth from right) presented a check to Patty Epps (center), director of athletics at F&M, following the 2016 fundraiser. The trio was flanked by members of the 2016 F&M basketball teams.

“We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve selfesteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all

When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a fourteam men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s

NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancaster rotary.org/event/basketball -extravaganze-2018. Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership,

When Carley Bilindabagabo, events coordinator with HOPE International, was asked about the speaker for the 2018 HOPE International breakfast, she responded with enthusiasm. “We have someone special this year: Alex Nuñez, president and CEO of Esperanza International, our partner program in the Dominican Republic,” said a smiling Bilindabagabo. The 2018 breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 7 a.m., and checkin will begin at 7:30 a.m. This year, the event will be held on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online

giving. In the Dominican Republic, where about 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty level, Esperanza provides a branch of HOPE that supports associates as they help themselves in an effort to alleviate poverty. Through savings groups, Esperanza can provide capital in a commitment to end poverty and foster transformation to those the organization serves. Nuñez began serving Esperanza in March 2012, when she became vice president of public affairs and Caribbean investment. Previously, Nuñez worked to coach and educate members of a major defense concern in every facet of business. She has a master’s degree from Belhaven College and bachelor’s degree from

The latest production in Ephrata Performing Arts Center’s “EPAC on the Edge” series will be performed in November. “A Behanding in Spokane” will feature a small cast consisting of Tim Spiese, Brian Viera, Cheri Fogelman, and Michael Roman. It will be directed by Megan Riggs.

HOPE Breakfast To Have Dominican Flavor

Lina, a client of Esperanza International, a partner of HOPE International in the Dominican Republic, runs a colmado, a convenience stand, in a bus station. Lina’s business has allowed her to support her family after her husband hurt his back. The HOPE International 2018 annual breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Eastern Mennonite University. She graduated from the Lifework Leadership Program in 2012. In the past several months, Bilindabagabo visited the Dominican Republic to see HOPE’s operations there firsthand. She was impressed by the number of women who are clients there. “We visited four clients, and three of the four were women,” shared Bilindabagabo, who especially remembered the story of Lina, a woman who ran a colmado, a convenience stand. “Her (colmado) was in a bus station, so she had constant traffic,” noted Bilindabagabo. “It was the only place to buy a snack or bottle of water before getting on the bus, which I thought was genius.” Bilindabagabo said that Lina’s story was especially memorable because Lina’s daughter had also started a business, which now employs Lina’s husband, Felix, who had hurt his back and was unable to perform other work. “(Lina’s) daughter realized that her mother’s colmado always needed paper products like cups and

napkins,” explained Bilindabagabo, “But it is hard to get them (in the Dominican Republic).” The daughter, wisely, chose to start her own business buying and reselling paper products at a store not far from the bus station. “The story struck me because the daughter decided to start her own business because she saw her mother do it - the generational effects of entrepreneurship,” commented Bilindabagabo. To add a Dominican flair to the breakfast, Bilindabagabo has arranged for the buffet menu to include coffee and juice from the Dominican Republic, along with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and pancakes. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hopeinternational.org /lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Saturday, Nov. 10. Individuals may register by calling 717-4643220, ext. 554, or emailing carley@hopeinternational.org.
