ritain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, will hold its annual Vines for Veterans fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 25. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event will feature a variety of vendors, prize drawings and refreshments. The proceeds will benefit multiple nonprofit organizations that support veterans in the local area. “It’s a way for people to kick off the holiday shopping season while supporting a good cause,” said Debbie Helm, owner of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard. “People take pride in it; it feels good to purchase gifts locally instead of shopping online.” More than 25 vendors will set up throughout the property, and Atlas Assistance Dogs will sell holiday arrangements and decorations. The organization will retain 100% of its sales profits, which will support its efforts to expand accessibility to service dogs throughout the country. In addition to highlighting local vendors for Vines for Veterans, Britain Hill will host several local artisans during its regular business hours through the holidays. Tickets will be available to purchase for a prize drawing at 4 p.m., which will include jewelry, home décor, pottery, artwork and edible goods; each item has been donated by a participating vendor. Food trucks such as On the Roll and 22 bbq will be present to sell refreshments. This year, Britain Hill will use the funds raised by Vines for Veterans to support two organizations: the Pequea Valley Cemeteries branch of Wreaths Across America and Warriors on the Water Ltd. Wreaths Across America coordinates an annual ceremony to lay wreaths on the
As its fall production, Solanco High School’s drama club will present “The Man Who Came to Dinner” on Thursday, Nov. 16; Friday, Nov. 17; and Saturday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, located at 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. The play will incorporate more than 70 students, who will fill roles from actors to ushers to bring the Broadway satire to life on the stage. “The Man Who Came to Dinner” follows the story of Sheldon W hiteside, a pompous radio personality who visits a remote town. Due to an injury that Whiteside sustains during his visit, he is forced to stay with the Stanley family for much longer than he anticipated, and the two parties grapple with their differences as their routines are turned upside down. “It’s a great comedic piece with interesting and wacky characters,” said Dillon Maurer, the play’s director. “Students have had a lot of fun getting into character, and it’s a show that brings everyone in the audience together with laughter.” Whiteside, played by senior Aidan Todd, wastes no time in disrupting the lives of his hosts. He transforms the Stanleys’ home into his personal office, domineering the telephone and restricting access to the front door for visitors such as Hollywood socialite Bev, played by senior Isaac West. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley, played by Nicholas Mohler and Reese Zander, respectively, navigate the subsequent mess of eccentric personalities and inflated egos as the play explores the silliness of

Warriors on the Water Ltd. is a nonprofit located in Kirkwood that offers free outdoor recreational services to military veterans and first responders. organizations as a way to tie Veterans Day into the event’s theme, since it also takes place in November,” Helm said. Britain Hill will also hold a guest bartending event at its Lampeter location, 1702 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 17. From 6 to 9 p.m., members of Wreaths Across America will serve drinks and explain the work they do in the organization. In addition to supporting local nonprofits, Helm coordinates the

celebrity culture. “(Whiteside) is very disliked by the other characters in the play, but the audience is going to love him,” Maurer said. “He’s snarky, arrogant and sarcastic, but there’s a beautiful side of him as well that’s shown in the second act.” After performing “You Can’t Take It With You” as its fall 2022 production, the drama club decided to remain in the same time period by choosing another play written by George Kauffman in the 1930s. Although Maurer is a theater actor with more than 15 years of experience, this is his second production as a director. For his directorial debut, Maurer was aided by his familiarity with material since he had acted in the play in college. “The Man

Bartlett noted that the venue is not a traditional stage but a black box theater, which is a more intimate performing space. “That is a very unique experience for students because normally they perform on a stage in an auditorium,” Bartlett noted. “Most kids do not have the experience of performing in a black box theater, and it’s a very intimate show.

Academy, when explaining how the play was chosen. “One of the girls had a friend who was in ‘Radium’ at L-S, and she thought the show was great. I spoke to the kids, and they were very excited. They wanted something that would be challenging and have a powerful message. Many of these kids are ‘actor’s actors,’ and they wanted to delve into character and emotion.”

The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Monday, Nov. 13. This date marks not only a century of service by the JLL, but also the anniversary of the exact date when the league held its first meeting in 1923 at the YWCA. In tribute to this milestone, the JLL will hold its general membership meeting on Nov. 13 at the YWCA. The event will provide an opportunity for members to come together, to celebrate their achievements and look forward to its future years of service to the Lancaster community. It was at the YWCA that 55 young women first convened,
with Laura Louise Watt serving as the temporary chair and being subsequently elected as the first JLL president. It was here that the seeds of the JLL were sown, and its mission to develop the leadership potential of women for the betterment of the Lancaster community took root. The JLL has a long history of voluntarism in areas such as education, literacy, and cultural enrichment. During the past century, its achievements have included preserving historical properties like Rock Ford and raising funds for Wheatland’s restoration. As of June 2022, the JLL’s current initiative is focused

on addressing food and nutrition accessibility, seeking to combat a lack of access to healthy and nutrient-rich food while enhancing nutrition knowledge and dietary habits for all segments of Lancaster County’s population. The initiative includes a multifaceted approach, with JLL members collecting 1,500 manual can openers for the Lancaster Power Packs Project, raising funds to support the initiative, setting up popup produce markets, and establishing and maintaining a community garden at the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster’s Jack Walker Clubhouse in downtown Lancast-
er. This initiative exemplifies the JLL’s commitment to addressing pressing community needs. The JLL will mark its 100th anniversary with a series of events throughout the year, including the centennial jubilee on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Fulton Theatre. At this event, active and sustaining members, along with community partners, will come together to celebrate the JLL’s impact and look ahead to the future. outing has collected more than $7 million in donations. “We started very small at the beginning, but we’ve been building on it,” said Rutt. “I think philanthropy in general has changed over the 23 years. It used to be, ‘ We need to send our money.’ But I’ve seen a shift where the world has become smaller.” “The way (the outing) has
grown is tied to the impact,” added Rutt. “If something works, the word spreads. Like, ‘Hey, I want to get behind something that’s growing.’ And with some of the people we work with, their businesses have grown.” Rutt founded HOPE International in 1997, and a year later the organization’s first loans were dispersed in Ukraine. In 2004, Peter Greer became HOPE International’s president, and in that same year it distributed its 10,000th loan. From its founding to the current time, HOPE International has aided 2.7 million families in 24 countries around the world with $1.7 billion in loans. “In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing,” said Rutt. “I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how to help. God knew, and we just kept taking small steps. God had bigger plans. It was exciting to see.” For additional information about HOPE International, go to www.hope international.org.

$1.2 million. That’s a bag of loot. That’s some serious bank. That’s a loaf of bread. That’s the amount of money that HOPE International, 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, recently raised with its 23rd annual golf outing. The Manheim Township-based nonprofit will put those dollars to good use in the form of loans, investments and assistance to financially challenged individuals and families around the globe. “We’re excited about the impact we are having,” said HOPE International founder Jeff Rutt. “That money will impact thousands and thousands of lives. Small loans can empower families to have dignity instilled in their lives. With the families we serve, we really believe God has put each of them in our hands.” “A lot of people like to golf, and a lot of people want to impact lives around the world,” Rutt continued.
“This is a vehicle. It’s a way to network together, have a great time outdoors and at the same time drive out poverty. It’s a fun way of fundraising.” The outing was conducted at three separate golf courses - Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford and Turf Valley Golf Club in Ellicott City, Md. - in the middle of September. Some 350 players participated. “It’s small businesses who want to get involved, and they’ll send folks on their team,” said Rutt. “Sometimes the golfers may not even be aware of what the owner of their company is doing. They may not even be aware the company is involved with helping lives around the world. It’s a great way to get involved.” The 2023 version of the HOPE International golf outing raised about $200,000 more than last year’s. The event pulled in $951,444 in 2021 and raised more than $625,000 the year prior. Over the years, the golf
