Solanco Thespians To Present “Radium Girls” “‘Radium Girls’ investigates what happens when public health and the commercialization of science collide,” Solanco High School fall play director John Biles said, describing the show that will be presented on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 19, 20, and 21, at 7:30 p.m. Playwright D.W. Gregory based “Radium Girls” on a true story. “In the 1920s, radium and its use

in shrinking cancerous tumors, but also to illuminate watch dials, was heralded as one of the most important scientific breakthroughs in history and hugely profitable for the U.S. Radium Corporation,” Biles explained. “‘Radium Girls’ follows the story of dial painters for the corporation who fall ill as a result of radium poisoning and the corporation’s attempts to hide the truth.” See Solanco Thespians pg 2

MOPS Group Plans Online Auction Faith Reformed Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) will hold its annual fundraising auction online from Monday, Nov. 16, to Friday, Nov. 20. The event will be hosted at www.millersiegrist.com by Miller & Siegrist Auctioneers. During that week, individuals may place bids on decorative wooden signs, jewelry, gift certificates for local businesses, themed baskets, and more. Bidding will close at noon on Nov. 20. Photos of the auction items, along with the direct link to the online auction, will be posted on the Facebook event page, which may be found by searching for “Faith Reformed MOPS Online Benefit Auction.” All of the proceeds from the auction will be given to North Star Initiative and Hope Inspire Love,

During the school year, Faith Reformed MOPS meets twice a month at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church, 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. However, due to COVID-19 meeting guidelines, MOPS members have been gathering in small groups in homes rather than in a large group at the church. They continue to engage in discussions and watch teaching videos, which are based on the 2020-21 theme of “Decide to Rise.” Mothers, stepmothers, and caregivers of children from birth to preschool or age 5 are welcome to join Faith Reformed MOPS. which work together in the area of human trafficking. North Star Initiative operates a restoration home for women who have been rescued from trafficking. Hope Inspire Love uses a three-part solution model awareness, intervention, and aftercare - to fight human trafficking and exploitation. Auction chair Kerri Kreider noted that Faith Reformed MOPS has raised funds for North Star Initiative for several years, and last year’s auction generated $3,600 for the organization. Hope Inspire Love was added as a beneficiary after the founder spoke at a MOPS meeting this past winter. “It’s an important cause for a lot of moms in our group,” Kreider said. “I don’t think a lot of people know sex trafficking is happening here in Lancaster County. Thanksgiving Food Drive Begins This year’s Giving Thanks Project will once again provide food to Solanco families in need at Thanksgiving. Due to COVID-19, food items will not be collected at Solanco schools this year. Instead, all food items should be delivered to the Solanco Food Bank, 355 Buck Road, Quarryville. The Solanco School District, Solanco Food Bank, and the Buck Company Inc. are encouraging local residents to

donate food items prior to Tuesday, Nov. 17. The food will be assembled into Thanksgiving meal boxes, which will be distributed to families in need in Solanco. Requested food items include 5-pound bags of fresh potatoes, 1-pound bags of carrots, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned green beans, garlic powder, apples, brown sugar, cinnamon powder, white cake mix, and

One of the dial painters, Grace Fryer, fights for her day in court, while U.S. Radium Corporation head Arthur Roeder uses every obstacle at his disposal to make the case stall long enough so that the witnesses die before the trial can begin. Lance Workman, who was cast as Roeder, said close attention to detail is needed to effectively portray the deep emotion involved in the play, and among those details are body language and posturing. In preparing to

present the play, students were required to learn body language and human interaction characteristics from 100 years ago. “It’s important to do it right to demonstrate what the real radium girls were feeling,” remarked Mallory Sturgill, who portrays Fryer. “Radium Girls” will be presented live in the auditorium of the high school, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Attendees will be required to wear masks, and social distancing

will be in effect as seating will be limited to 150 people, which is 20% capacity of the auditorium. Admission tickets may be purchased at the door prior to each performance, and separate prices have been set for adults and for students and senior citizens. Additionally, the show on Nov. 20 will be broadcast on the Solanco School District YouTube channel for the community to enjoy. For more information, readers may call the high school at 717-786-2151.

The 30th annual Southern End Community Association (SECA) auction will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 9 a.m. A preview event, during which attendees may place absentee bids, will take place on Friday, Nov. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. All auction activities will be located in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The event was

moved to the Kreider Building because it is larger than the Hoffman Building, where the event was previously held, and has side doors and windows that can be opened. This will make social distancing possible and ensure the venue is well-ventilated as part of COVID-19 mitigation recommendations. “We are asking people to be mindful of the health and safety of others,” said Kim Risk, who is co-chair of the

auction with Carol Gibson. Also due to mitigation, the Solanco High School post prom committee will not provide a meal on Nov. 13. However, on Nov. 14, the group will sell popcorn and cupcakes and a food truck will offer hot food and beverages. Both live and silent auctions will be held on Nov. 14, and “grab and go” gift certificates will be available for set prices as well. SECA has donated a family pool pass, building and pavilion rentals, and a pool party for the auction. Other contributions include a dozen doughnuts per month for a year from OMG Donuts, a swim party and picnic for 12 from Drumore Estates, a stay at the Lancaster Arts Hotel, a Shaker-style barn birdhouse painted by Kenneth Hoak, and artwork from Ruth Lesley Lefever, Art Harrington, Steve Wilson, and Barbara Johnson. “We have brand-new 20inch and 28-inch bicycles. They’ll make a great Christmas present or something new to ride the trail,” Risk said. “We also have Lancaster County’s famous Shopper Chopper.” She noted that the novelty vehicle has been touring the United States, helping with various fundraisers. Auction attendees may bid on use of the vehicle for four hours next year. “There’s also antiques, collectibles, and furniture. We’re picking up a trailer load,” Gibson added. “People have just reached out in generous ways. It shows they care about SECA.” Additionally, Erma’s Flowers will be represented in the auction, as the daughter of the late Erma Work has donated items from her mother. An extensive list of auction lots has been posted at https://secarec.org/annual -seca-auction/. Donations are still being accepted, and readers may call Gibson at 717951-8545 or Risk at 717-2780881 to make arrangements. The co-chairs expressed their hope that the community is well-represented at the auction. “Bid high and bid often,” Risk said. “The auction is the backbone of our budget. It keeps the doors open and covers operating costs.” To learn more about SECA and its upcoming events, readers may visit https:// secarec.org.

The Celebrate Recovery (CR) ministry at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2483 Baltimore Pike, Oxford, is reopening and is taking place every Tuesday beginning Oct. 20. Each meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a free meal and will continue with a large group session and worship from 7 to 8 p.m., which alternates between testimonies and CR lessons while participants sing praise songs and pray for each other. From 8 to 9 p.m., attendees break into gender-specific small groups, where they may share their challenges. Celebrate Recovery is a faithbased, Christ-centered, 12-step program for those dealing with any type of hurt, habit, or hang-up, whether it is addiction, alcoholism, anxiety, depression, grief, or anything else that affects their daily routines. The meetings aim to offer a safe, confidential, and nonjudgmental place to share as people work at their own pace of recovery. Readers with questions may contact Jim Krepelka at 484-748-1475.

Whether it’s financing options to help you grow or business tools for streamlining efficiency, it’s time to explore your possibilities with Univest.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

fer who followed with a strike to Ryan Smith that took the Mules to the Comet one. St. Clair punched it in and Trent McDowell’s PAT with 9:00 showing on the clock had Solanco in front. A fumble by the Comets and a facemask penalty help set up Solanco’s second TD of the night, a three yard burst by Justin Dagen. McDowell’s kick gave Solanco a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Mules had an opportunity to pad that lead with 49 seconds remaining but McDowell’s field goal attempt was off the mark. The hosts started their rally in the third quarter. After a big catch by Isaac Hostetter got the Comets to the Solanco one, Isaiah Stoltzfus scored and the PAT with 3:53 left cut the lead to 14-7. Early in the fourth, Manor’s Luke Braas hit Kyle Murr with a 33-yard strike, tying the game with 11:50 left to play. Solanco answered, marching 57-yards in 11 plays and finding the end zone on a one-yard keeper by St. Clair. But the next big play went to the Comets. Erik Hinkle blocked the extra point, leaving Solanco with a 20-14 advantage at the 7:31 mark. The Comets used that momentum and took their first lead with 3:20 left on a one-yard keeper by Braas. The Mules buckled down again, and looked to reclaim the lead. A big pass from St. Clair to Ronnie Fulton at the 22 was a spark. They moved the ball to the Comet 5 and, on second and goal, Solanco fumbled. The Comets

recovered and time ran out. “I just said to myself, if we don’t score here I’m going to call timeout and kick a field goal,” said Cox. “Our execution was just not where it needed to be. “Overall, it was a good season,” he added. “We got to play when, going in, we didn’t even know if there would be a season. It would have been nice to finish on a positive note but what everyone will remember about this year is that we beat Manheim Central in Manheim for the first time since 1973 and on the first game on their new turf field. And beating Cocalico was another big win,” he continued. “This was a great group to coach.” The Mules, who got 149 rushing yards from Robert Castagna, finished the season with a 3-4 overall record. Their 3-2 Section Three mark left them in a three way tie for second place with CV and Cocalico. Warwick finished on top with an undefeated season. St. Clair finished as the teams’ leading rusher with 522 yards on 134 carries and scored 11 rushing touchdowns. Castagna followed with 92 carries and 435 yards with Ronnie Fulton and Zach Turpen, a junior, rounding out the top four rushers on the team. St. Clair also completed 12 of 37 attempts with sophomore Elijah Cunningham on the receiving end nine times for 178 yards. Defensively, Seth Harnish, a senior, led the way with 55 total tackles. Sophomore Josh Forren added 46 and senior Mason Hecker contributed 28. CROSS COUNTRY Solanco’s boys’ cross country team finished the season with a 2-7 record but had one runner qualify for the District Three Class 3A championships at Big Spring High School this past Saturday, October 31. Anthony Solis, a junior, started the season with a tenth place finish and three meets later, in a race at home against Elizabethtown, crossed the finish line first. He went on to claim 17th place in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships and on October 31, clocked a 17:08.8 in the District Three Championships. He finished in 44th place and was the 12th sophomore to cross the line. “The field at districts was very fast and competitive,” stated head coach Kyle Nardella. “Anthony had a good race. He was hoping to break 17:00 but just missed that goal. Overall, he had a solid season. In order to improve on his place and time he will need to make a dedication to his summer training.” As a sophomore, Solis clocked a 17:04 in districts and placed 56th. Also of note, freshman Lilly

Soulliard earned 2nd Team AllStar recognition for Section One. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team, under first year head coach Dillon Costrello, wrapped up the 2020 season with a 3-set loss to Ephrata at home Thursday, October 29. The Mounts, with a gamehigh 11 kills from Taylor Haupt, earned a quick 25-12 first set win before Solanco picked up the intensity, only to fall 25-21, 25-19. “With this being senior night, it was an emotional night, in both good ways and bad,” said Costrello. “We had a good passing night and our offense was better but we couldn’t stay in runs of serving or come out on top in over 50% of the rallies,” he continued. “We needed to serve tougher and get them out of system more. It was a great team

effort for our last game. I’m excited for what the future holds for the program.” Seniors playing in their last game of the season included Nicole Bowman, Cheyanne Cutler, Natalie Diamond and Emma Canale, who finished with a game-high eight blocks and led the team with 88 blocks on the year. Maggie Perry had a standout night on defense, collecting 14 digs. She led the team this year with 158 total digs. Offensive standout against the Mounts was Jaidee Beam with seven kills, Maggie Perry with three aces and Madi Davis who hit 100 assists on the year with eight. Beam was the stat leader for the year in both aces (33) and Kills (68). Solanco finished the season with a 2-12 mark overall.

The Mules rode a two game losing streak into Millersville on the eve of Halloween. The hosting Comets were looking for their

first win of the season. The result was a riveting 21-20 victory by the Comets that came down to the wire. “I was disappointed that we lost,” said head coach Tony Cox. “ We made too many mistakes and the team with the fewest mistakes wins. We played hard but we didn’t finish plays.” Solanco got off to a quick start in this one, jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Mason St. Clair completed a lateral pass to Colesen Sheaf-

Get Away To Jim Thorpe With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill coun-

ties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow ’s End, a quaint

corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season

or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

A carriage ride through the streets of Jim Thorpe is a great way to see the quaint shops and beautiful architecture.
