GIVING THANKS PROJECT

Solanco schools, the Solanco Food Bank, and Buck Company Inc. are working together in the annual Giving Thanks Project. Food items are being collected and will be assembled into Thanksgiving meal boxes to be distributed to families in need within the Solanco School District. Local residents may donate fresh potatoes (5-pound bags), chicken and/or beef bouillon cubes, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned green beans, brown-and-serve rolls, and apple pie filling. Food items can be dropped off at any school in the district or the district’s Administration Office, 121 S. Hess St., Quarryville. Monetary contributions will be used to purchase turkeys. Checks should be made payable to Solanco School District, and Giving Thanks Project should be written in the memo line. Checks should be dropped off or mailed to the Administration Office. MEN’S BANQUET

Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, invites men in the community to attend its annual men’s banquet on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. A traditional turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, oyster casserole, peas, cranberry relish, pumpkin pie and shoofly pie will be prepared by the church’s Presbyterian Women group. A program will be presented by Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Tickets are required and may be purchased at the church office. Call Tom Henry at 717-203-4509 for more information. FUNDRAISING EVENT

will benefit from a craft and vendor fundraiser event on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hoffman Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds on South Lime Street in Quarryville. The event is hosted by Christin Sheets and her uncle. Last November, Sheets donated a kidney to her uncle; both donor and recipient were unable to work while recovering, so a fundraiser vendor event was held to support them. This year, the National Kidney Foundation will use the proceeds to assist other families during transplant recovery. More than 30 vendors and crafters will be present. Food and beverages will be donated by Nottingham Inn, Herr’s, Maplehofe Dairy, Wawa and Turkey Hill. Giveaway drawing tickets will be available for purchase.

Thespians To Stage “Hamlet” Spinoff By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“The purpose of life is to find your gift. The meaning of life is to give it away” is sometimes attributed to William Shakespeare. A search for the meaning of life will take center stage in the production of Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 21, 22, and 23, in the school’s auditorium. A free performance for senior citizens will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

W hen Shakespeare wrote the tragedy “Hamlet,” Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were relatively minor characters. Stoppard’s play inverts the story, bringing the two characters to the forefront. According to cast members and director John Biles, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are college friends of Hamlet’s who are sent to spy on Hamlet by his uncle, Claudius. Their instructions are to bring Hamlet to England for what they do not realize are nefarious reasons, but Hamlet double-crosses them. “Basically think ‘The Lion King,’” said Maria Eden, who was cast as Rosencrantz. See Solanco Play pg 5

Solanco High School thespians, including (from left) Maria Eden, Elliot Spangler, and Emily Herr, will present “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” on Nov. 21 to 23. Senior citizens may attend an afternoon performance on Nov. 20 free of charge.

SLCHS Produces 2020 Calendar Holiday Bazaar Will Support By Dayna M. Reidenouer Sanctuary Updates Pictures and memories are essentially all that remain of the stone house that Smedley Lamborn built on his family’s property around the year 1850. Located on the Martic Township bank of Muddy Creek, the house was destroyed in the 1960s by order of Philadelphia Electric Company to make way for the Muddy Run peak-hour backup electric project. “We took the doors and the Sue Lamborn (right) and Linda and Stan White windows with us,” said South- display the 2020 calendar page featuring a ern Lancaster County Historical drawing of the Lamborn family’s former home. “It had been many years since this had a facelift,” finance chair Charlie Eggers commented as he looked around the unfurnished sanctuary at Mount Nebo United Methodist Church (UMC), 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea. The vast room had been built circa 1832 and boasted a tin ceiling and tin-covered walls. While updates had been made over the years, it had been several decades since the carpet had been replaced, and the paint was starting to show its age. The facility also lacked air conditioning. Thus, the congregation hosted a capital campaign, moved the worship services into the fellowship center that was built in See Holiday Bazaar pg 4

The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event. A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.” The members of the Give Fleet, a

volunteer driving squad open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle. Decals will be available through the LCCF. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their decals at any time during the month of November. Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at www.extragive.org/info /extra-opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, free and open to the public, will offer the community an opportunity to count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give. Designed by Lititz-based event company ATOMIC and local firm Shumaker PDT, ExtraGive Fest will serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, feature local and regional bands, show screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, and have social media stations for photo-ops and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. New this year will be the ExtraGive Food Truck Lane. Guests can enjoy a selection of local food vendors parked on South Queen Street adjacent to the Lancaster County Convention Center. Downtown Lancaster will again be aglow with a 14-story light show at the Griest Building in Penn Square, which will feature changing colors and patterns from 5 p.m. to midnight. For more information, including a list of participants, readers may visit www.extragive.org. Pictured on front: The eighth annual Extraordinary Give, set for Friday, Nov. 22, will give individuals the opportunity to donate to participating organizations of their choice and have their donation stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000 and an additional $50,000 in prizes. Various special events will take place in Lancaster County throughout the day, concluding with the ExtraGive Fest from 6 p.m. to midnight in downtown Lancaster.

The program will be free and open to the public. Mike Roth and Stan White will discuss their new book, “General Merchandise Stores of Southern Lancaster County, Pa.,” which is the result of two years of intensive research, interviews, and writing. A new PowerPoint presentation will accompany this opportunity to meet the authors and to obtain an autographed copy of their latest book. Roth and White are longtime members of the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society and are currently the treasurer and president, respectively.

ESL Classes Planned Wesley Network Center, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. The classes, which began on Oct. 3, cover conversation, pronunciation, reading and writing. The free classes are for all adults age 18 and older who would like to learn English as a second language. Based on the current students, there is a beginners’ class; however, intermediate and advanced classes may be added as needs arise. The classes are ongoing, and students may join at any point. These classes are an outreach of Wesley Main Campus and La Cosecha, a bilingual Wesley Network Campus. Both churches are in the Quarryville area, while the classes themselves are held in town in the same building as the coffee shop on West Fourth Street. All teachers are unpaid volunteers under the direction of Mallory Rutledge, a Spanish teacher at Solanco High School. Volunteers as well as students are welcome. They do not need to know another language or have teaching experience; they just need to be willing to serve and learn. For those who are not able to help on Thursdays, there are other opportunities available in roles such as conversation partners or prayer partners. For additional information, readers may contact Rutledge at malloryj rutledge@gmail.com or Jalexa Merced at 610-335-6911.

Solanco Play from pg 1 “It has farcical elements and jokes as well as higher-level existential elements.” The existential elements, as well as what Biles described as “the highly sophisticated and intricate nature of Tom Stoppard’s writing,” can make “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” a challenge to understand at first, and it took a few times reading through the script as a group for the cast to begin to make sense of it. However, cast members have done the work to bring out the meaning for audience members. Biles opted to set the play in 1967’s Summer of Love to give it a fresh, funky vibe. “There’s such a good energy (that) audiences will love it,” commented Emily Herr, who was cast as Guildenstern. “It’s going to be so great,” added Elliot

I’m not a logical person.” “A lot of times I act like a Rosencrantz in real life: I don’t always pay attention,” Maria said. “(The play) has made me question everything.” Tickets will be required for admission to performances, and separate prices have been set for adults and for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the high school office by calling 717-786-2151 or at the door before each show. While there is no charge to attend the senior citizens’ performance on Nov. 20, those planning to attend should register by contacting Solanco communications director Keith Kaufman at keith_kaufman@ solancosd.org or 717-786-5617.

(the Lamborn family),” added SLCHS president Stan White. The Lamborns’ house is one of the structures included in the 2020 calendar produced by the SLCHS. The house at Chase Meadows Farm, which was condemned for the Octorara Lake reservoir in the 1940s, is also included in the calendar. Sketches of happier memories, such as that of the Oakryn Cornet Band, are part of the publication as well. As the photo archivist for the SLCHS, Stan is always on the lookout for interesting photos. Each year, in preparation for the calendar, Stan gathers a group of images, and then the members of the calendar committee selects the ones they like best. “We try for representation of each township (in the Southern End),” Stan explained. “It’s hard to get Bart and Colerain (townships). We need people to bring in old photos and photos of old places.” “We can scan them while they wait,” added Stan’s wife, Linda, who is part of the calendar committee and an artist for the project. The committee commissions local artists to produce drawings from the photos. Many of them are members of the Lancaster County and Octoraro art associations. The artists range from a 2019 high

school graduate to a great-grandparent. In addition to Linda, the artists include John Esworthy, Ruth Lefever, Jane McCardell, Colleen Shoemaker, Mark W. Phillips, Amy Mueller, Christiean Sensenig, Tyler Allen, Jessie Crotti, Novelda Ferguson, and Marsha Stiles. The SLCHS has offered a calendar each year for 36 years to raise money for its operations and the upkeep of the Robert Fulton Birthplace. “We sell enough to make it worth doing,” Sue commented. “We’d like to sell more,” Stan added. The calendars may be purchased at the SLCHS archive building, which is located at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, across the road from the Robert Fulton Birthplace. The archives are open from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Calendars are also available at Kreider’s Market, the Oxford and Quarryville locations of Stoner’s Paint and Decorating, Maplehofe Dairy, CR Lapp’s Family Restaurant, The Daily Grind, Peach Bottom Consignment, and the Quarryville Agway. “Our two protagonists don’t understand why they - out of all of people in the world - have been asked to come before King Claudius,” Biles said. “They barely remember their trip to the castle and have very vague memories of their own pasts. They spend the entire play trying to uncover their purpose not only in the events of ‘Hamlet,’ but their own lives. They irony is that they don’t know that their deaths have already been written, which is textbook Theater of the Absurd.” “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1968. Biles acknowledged that the play shares themes with “Waiting for Godot,” which was first performed in 1953. “There’s a complexity to this,” he said.

New Theater Group To Present First Production A new theater group - Footlight Theater - has started in Paradise, and it will soon present its first production, “Rumpelstiltskin.” The play will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Land Christian Center, located in the Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall, 33752 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise. The play, which is geared toward elementary-age children, will be a “pay what you will” event. Joe Dunfee is the artistic director for Footlight Theater. Last spring, he was presenting a marionette Passion Play at the Holy Land Christian Center when the owner asked him to produce an additional show. Dunfee decided to initially focus on familiar fairy tales for a young audience. Currently, the venue for the show is being prepared for the upcoming production, with the installation of new curtains and lighting. The production will have a human cast, though puppets See Footlight Theater pg 6

The No. 14 seed Golden Mules gave undefeated Shippensburg all they could handle in the opening round of the District Three Class 5A playoffs, which got underway on Nov. 1 at Veterans Park in Shippensburg. The Mules, behind four touchdowns by Ronnie Fulton, led 35-28 in the third quarter but could not hold on as Nick Gustafson’s 22yard catch over a defender put the Greyhounds in front for good with three minutes remaining, 42-35. With one chance left, Solanco drove the field but inadvertently spiked the ball on fourth down at the 4 yard line to stop the clock, thus turning the ball over with one second left. “The kids certainly played hard and we had opportunities,” said head coach Tony Cox. “We got inside the 10 and were running no-huddle, fast plays, and I got caught up in calling plays and lost what down it was. The quarterback did his job. I didn’t do mine.” Shipp went to work quickly, scoring on its first drive. Zack Manning, who was 6 for 7 for 146 yards, hit Isaiah Houser for 34 and two plays later, Alex Sharrow (9 carries, 249 yards) scored the first of his three touchdowns with a 25-yard run. The extra point was good, and the hosts led 7-0 with 10:49 left. The Greyhounds made it 13-zip on Sharrow’s 90-yard burst down the sideline with 1:05 left in the first. “Sharrow was tough,” said Cox. “We tried to arm tackle him too much. Plus, we had a couple of penalties that knocked us back.” The Mules, who blanked Shipp 43-0 in 2015 for their first-ever playoff win, cut the lead in half when Grady Unger (3 for 6, 115 yards, and 20 carries for 83 yards) carried the ball 17 yards to paydirt on the first play of the second quarter. Trent McDowell, who was 4-4 in PATs, kicked his first and cut the lead to 13-7 with 11:54 on the clock. Both teams traded TDs after that. Shipp scored on a one-yard run and Solanco answered with Fulton’s five-yard rumble to the end zone. The Greyhounds came back with a Manning to Houser toss for a 23yard score. The two-point conversion made it 28-14 with 43 seconds to go in the half. Again, Solanco rose to the challenge. Another Fulton touchdown, this one from seven yards out, cut the lead to 28-21 with 11.4 left in the half. Fulton kept the pace after the break and sparked the second half with two consecutive scores. His 13-yard burst with 6:34 left in the third knotted the score. Solanco recovered the onside kick and took the lead when Unger hit Fulton with a 47-yard toss with 1:13 left in the quarter. That momentum was short-lived as Sharrow raced 80 yards for a score, tying the game at 35-35 with just over a minute left in the third and setting up Gustafson’s fourth-quarter, game-winning catch. “I just can’t say enough about this group. They are one of the best groups I’ve had of not getting down on each other,” stated Cox. “They just don’t get down. They’re great kids and they bought into the program. “We were down 13-0 and came back,” he added. “We were down 28-14 and came back to take the lead. We just ran out of

time. “This was the first playoff experience for most of these guys. Grady had maybe six or seven snaps at quarterback last year,” Cox continued. “He did a great job this year as a senior. “To go 5-5 and qualify for playoffs, especially after losing 27 seniors, speaks volumes of this team. They never gave up. They fought to the end, and that’s one of the things I’m most proud of this season. What a great group of senior leaders. And we have a great group of kids coming back. I look forward to that,” he said. The Mules finished with a league-best 3,275 rushing yards and Nick Yannutz, who rushed for 132 yards on 29 carries, won the regular season rushing title with 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns. GIRLS’ SOCCER Solanco’s Cinderella season came to an end on Nov. 2 at Tulpehocken High School. Just one win away from qualifying for the state playoffs, the Mares dropped a 1-0 final against Conrad Weiser High School (CW) in a District Three Class 3A third-place game. This one was every bit as close as the final score indicates. Weiser earned one corner and held a slim 5-1 edge in shots, with most of those coming in the first half. Concerned with containing CW’s Grace George (32 goals, 5 assists), an all-state player, Berks County scoring leader and player of the year, Solanco used a defensive formation. “We dropped Alana Yoder back to mark George,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “Alana completely took her out of the game. Hannah Wood, Arianna Sieberlich, Rilyn Saner and Maya Dolan were also amazing, supporting Alana and playing with the same toughness and intensity they have all season.” After a scoreless first half, the Greyhounds broke in front when a cross from the right passed through the box and to the foot of Journee Haynes, who scored the only goal in the game with just over 19 minutes left in the game. “A well-defended play down the right flank saw the ball squeeze through to a trailing midfielder (Haynes, 8 goals, 7 assists) who had time to collect the ball and fire a well-placed shot past Gabi Dolan,” said Yoder. “After that, we shifted to our normal 4-4-2 formation and immediately saw increased chances and momentum shift our way. In the end, though, we were unable to capitalize on chances.” Solanco concludes its remarkable season at 14-6-2, a school record for wins. The team also made its first-ever appearance in the district tournament, where it knocked off top seed Lower Dauphin and outlasted Fleetwood 4-2 in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, stretching its unbeaten streak to 11 straight games. “This season was unforgettable,” said Yoder. “These girls have done something no other team from Solanco had ever done, and to play a game in November was a huge honor for us! We lose just two starters from this year’s squad (Dolan and Alana), so we want to work hard in the offseason and make this a perennial trip to the postseason.”

may occasionally be recruited as cast members. Footlight Theater’s goal is to present content that is consistent with traditional Judeo-Christian ethics. Some plays, such as for Christmas and Easter, will have more intensive Christian content, but non-Christian audience members are welcome. Dunfee said he is firmly committed to letting parents know the content before they come see a show. In the first production by Footlight, “Rumpelstiltskin,” the miller’s daughter is portrayed as boasting of her abilities to help bolster her social status. When the prince talks to her about this, he quotes

from Proverbs 31, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies … Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Dunfee also feels that good theater for a young audience should be enjoyable for adults, and he has included some content geared toward them as well. Future productions may include some plays geared toward an older audience. For more information or tickets, readers may contact Dunfee at 717-203-8670.
