Event Aims To Bring Hope To Addicts, Survivors By Dayna M. Reidenouer
It feels wrong when parents outlive their children, and that grief is compounded when the cause of death is drugs or alcohol. Jacquelyn Grimsey knows that firsthand, as she lost her 26-year-old daughter, Samantha Simpers, on Sept. 3, 2016, to a drug overdose. Grimsey is now raising her two grandchildren, and she is organizing A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life, an event to honor the memories of loved ones who have died due to overdose or suicide. “We need to talk about the disease (of addiction),” Grimsey explained. “We should not be ashamed, but we should band together as a community. We’ll bring hope from those working on their recovery every day.” Grimsey is a member of Mothers
Doing Battle, a support group for women whose children have a drug or alcohol addiction. Of the 44 members, eight have lost children to the disease. Two of the women will share during the celebration, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Additionally, two people who have overcome their addictions will share their stories. “Everybody has a story. It’s all the same, but it’s not,” Grimsey remarked. “(Even if we’re not abusing substances), we all become addicts because that’s all we think about (when our loved ones are addicted).” Grimsey hopes that by talking about addiction and suicide, the shame will dissipate, making it easier for folks to get help. “We are excited to welcome Alice Hoffman for this year’s Junior League of Lancaster author’s luncheon because she is a very well-known author whose books are familiar to a wide range of people,” said event chair Laura McGarry. “In addition, her newest novel, ‘The Rules of Magic,’ has received a lot of praise. It is exciting to welcome an author who has recently released such a great book, especially one that is tied to as familiar a story as ‘Practical Magic.’” Fans of Hoffman’s novels are invited to meet the author at the luncheon, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Each year, before the hectic pressures of the holiday season get underway, members of the Oxford Area Ministerium ask the community to join in thankful fellowship at their annual Thanksgiving service. This year, the service will be held at Mount Vernon Christian Church, 1 Lighthouse Drive, Kirkwood, on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. “The Thanksgiving service is a great, stress-free way to begin the Thanksgiving week,” said the Rev. Mark Terry, president of the Oxford Area Ministerium and pastor of the Oxford United Methodist Church. “Travel worries, cleaning worries, cooking worries save those all for another day. Come and give thanks for all that God has done for you. You will probably celebrate the holiday on Thursday with family; come celebrate on Sunday evening with your friends and neighbors.” The annual gathering will feature musical selections from the choirs and praise bands from a number of local churches, along with songs from a combined choir. Lincoln Larsen, the newly installed assistant pastor at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Oxford, will deliver the message. After the service, there will be time for fellowship along with pie and ice cream. “The service is just the community coming together - all the different churches and organizations that want to worship together,” Lighthouse Youth Center (LYC) director Buzz Tyson said. “It’s a nice gathering for us to fellowship with the
community.” Each year, the service moves to a different location. Terry noted that he enjoys the opportunity to worship with friends from other churches and to visit another church. “It is always a lot of fun to see friends that I don’t get to see on a Sunday morning, and to hear a sampling of the musical talent that we have in so many of our churches,” he said. Those who attend are asked to bring a nonperishable food item. These donations, along with funds from the offering, will go toward organizations helping to alleviate food needs in the area, including the LYC. “While many remember their less-fortunate neighbors this time of year, the need is still great,” said Terry. “The food we collect and funds we receive in the offering will be very helpful to these organizations this time of the year.” Some items particularly needed at the LYC include taco seasoning packets, barbecue sauce, macaroni and cheese, ketchup, ranch dressing and individualsize snacks such as crackers, fruit cup and granola bars. Celebration Of Life from pg 1 caught in addiction, and members of the CR group that meets at Wesley will be part of the celebration. CR leaders Mike Powers and Chuck Taylor will share their stories. “We both come from a background of addiction, but we’re here today, Powers said. Other CR participants will be on hand to talk with attendees as well. “Part of recovery is to serve, added CR leader Dave Eckardt. “We’re coming alongside this program because we believe in this. To personalize the celebration, Grimsey invites folks to submit the names and photos of their loved ones - family members or friends - who have died as a result of overdose or suicide for recognition during the event. The photos, along with names and dates of birth and death, should be emailed to grimsey383@gmail.com by Friday, Nov. 30. The photos will be
displayed, and each beloved’s name will be read during the celebration. “It’s an honor for us to recognize their loved ones, Grimsey commented. “ We don’t want to make it such a sad thing. We want to offer hope in the good Lord to get through these struggles. Grimsey noted that while the service is being held in December, it is not a Christmas event.
“But it’s a good time of year to have it, she said. “Hopefully it will bring comfort to people who have lost loved ones. In addition to the loved ones of people with addictions, A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life is open to people who are dealing with addictions themselves. A time of fellowship will be held following the service, and refreshments will be served. The Pathway of Hope initiative focuses on the long-term goal of self-sufficiency of impoverished families, intended to break the cycle of crisis and intergenera-
tional poverty. Families who are motivated and committed to take the necessary steps to improve their lives will work with a Salvation Army case manager for social and spiritual support. They will also be connected with services for jobs, health, housing, child care, education, and legal services. The Salvation Army of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware’s Pathway of Hope initiative is currently assisting families in 17 communities throughout the two regions. To date, it has served 162 families, including 232 adults and 394 children.

Conklin and the other volunteers who help to coordinate the event have heard countless stories of how the toy drive has met a need when parents or guardians have felt hopeless. The volunteers strive to conduct the collection and distribution with honor, dignity, and love, Conklin said. She noted that some families that have been recipients of gifts have later been able to give back to the event. “It’s a joy to see familiar faces contribute after knowing their struggles in years past,” Conklin commented. For more information about donating to the toy drive, readers may call Conklin at 717-806-2993. Those who would like to receive vouchers may contact Solanco Neighborhood Ministries at 717786-4308 or office@ SNMinistries.org.

6th birthday. Although Conklin has attempted to step back from leading the effort several times, she has never quite managed to do so. “I feel at this point it’s our responsibility to give back to our community in this way,” Conklin ex plained. “It’s a great honor to be able to be a part of something that blesses so many.” She noted that the toy drive has had an immeasurable impact on her family, which also includes a set of twin boys. “It’s taught our children to be thankful for their blessings; it’s taught them to be aware of their surroundings and to step up when they see a need,” Conklin added. “It has brought us close to people that we would never have met otherwise, and it’s given us an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with our community.”

After an impressive 49-0 shutout over Waynesboro in their District Three Class 5A opener, the Mules found themselves back in Denver opposite Section Two opponent Cocalico this past Saturday night. After a shocking 42-7 loss to the Eagles back on October 19, Solanco was looking to take advantage of Cocalico’s first round bye and gain some early momentum in hopes of an upset. The No. 2 seed Eagles, however, were anxious to get back on the field and advanced to the semifinals with a 36-0 shutout. It was Solanco’s first shutout this year. That early momentum could have been the defensive stand that denied the Eagles the end zone on their first possession. The hosts, however, responded with a defensive stand of their own. They not only forced Solanco to a three-and-out, blocked the punt, recovered the loose ball and, with a short jaunt, scored the opening TD of the night. “Their defense did a great job,” said head coach Tony Cox. “They stopped us up the middle, they stopped us on the outside and we tried throwing the ball but we

The PAT was off the mark. The second quarter proved to be pivotal as the Eagles exploded for 23 points and a pair of touchdowns by Noah Palm (187 rushing yards on 12 carries all in the first half). Palm started the second quarter with a 15- yard rush to the end zone. Cocalico put together its longest drive of the night, an 81-yard, 8-play series that resulted in a Ronald Zahm 38-yard TD with 4:51 left in the half. On their next possession, Palm broke through the left side for a 61-yard sprint to the house with 2:13 on the clock. They capped the scoring with a 26-yard field goal just before
the halftime horn. “They blocked two punts,” said Cox. “I don’t think our special teams have had problems all year but we were off this time. “Defensively, I thought we did a great job,” he add. “Our defensive coordinator was out with a family commitment and Mike Buffington took over and did a nice job.”
The Mules were led in rushing by Nick Yannutz (31Photo by Bob Diller yards on 9 carries), Nafis Moore (24 on Solanco’s Mike Grech (24) follows Chad Carter on a run in last Saturday’s District 13) and Joel Three quarterfinal contest at Cocalico. Attention Neck Pain, Headache, Upper Back and Shoulder Stiffness Sufferers…
New Neck Pain & Headache Workshop Helping Local People Get Back to Normal Naturally Without Unnecessary Injections or Surgery Do you have trouble sleeping at night because of neck pain? Do you struggle to turn your head to the side (when you’re driving) because of neck stiffness? Do you suffer with headaches or light headedness? Do you have tension in your neck and upper back when you work around the house…like vacuuming or cooking? Do you get tingling or numbness into your hands and fingers OR feel weak and embarrassed when you try open a jar or lift something? Do you just want to get back to moving normally and be able to do your day-to-day activities…naturally? If you’re looking to feel younger and feel stronger again, then going to the Neck Pain & Headache Workshop may be one of the best decisions you make. Neck and upper back problems can cause you to feel pain and stiffness - and can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms and hands…making it difficult to live your life and complete everyday actives… Neck pain can stop you from feeling normal…feeling like yourself. • It can force you to take pain medications, Ibuprofen, or even get cortisone injections (which are known to cause other health problems). • Everyday activities like driving, doing work at a computer desk, cooking, cleaning, doing yardwork…or even sleeping can feel difficult to impossible to perform. • You can feel irritated, upset or uncomfortable trying to keep up with your family or friends or going to work. • You might feel like you’re neglecting your yard, house or garden… • Neck pain and tension can distract you from focusing on what you’re doing (forgetting why you went to the store…or what you were going to do). • And it can take away from your ability to live a normal life…feeling like your holding your co-workers or friends and family back… Less movement and less living can lead to depression and stress…and can even lead to more pain and less movement. Not good. Here at Neff Physical Therapy, we’ve helped thousands of neck pain and headache sufferers from right here in Quarryville…and the rest of Lancaster County… who have suffered needlessly with neck problems…it’s one of our specialties. Most were having pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness…and were looking to heal naturally without medications, injections or surgery. Here’s What Some People Were Saying BEFORE They Started in the Neck Treatment Program: “I could hardly turn my head to the left at all.” “The pain in my neck kept me from sleeping.” “I was in so much pain that I could not function.” “I was in the ER with pain that came around to my chest.” And here’s what those same people are saying NOW After the Neck Treatment Program: “I felt much better after my 1st visit and in 2 weeks my neck pain was gone!” “For years I abused my neck and back, they were so helpful in getting me back to my functional self.” “One thing I learned is that you don’t have to live in debilitating pain.” “I have no more headaches.” By request to help neck pain sufferers, Dr. Kristopher Davis is hosting a Neck Pain Workshop right here at Neff Physical Therapy in Quarryville on Wednesday, November 28th at 6:30pm. If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: 3 The #1 Single Biggest Mistake neck pain & headache sufferers make which actually stops them from healing. 3 The 4 Frequently Overlooked causes of neck pain…(#1 frequently causes headaches for people who sleep on their side or stomach). 3 The 3 Keys to Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money). 3 The Top 3 Exercises for Neck Pain and Headaches anyone can do safely at home without fancy exercise equipment. 3 What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.
How Do You Claim Your Seat for the Neck Pain & Headache Workshop? Call 717-786-1245 to Register for the Neck Pain Workshop and Claim Your Seat. When you register, we will mail or email you The Neck Pain and Headache Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) approved funding to five Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs on Sept. 25. These five programs are reaching families and their children who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants totaled $74,375. Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County was awarded $25,000 to expand a partnership between Domestic Violence Services and COBYS that seeks to improve the mental health of children fleeing domestic violence through the use of an evidence-based model. The Seeking Safety program utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy to explore issues such as trauma, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program expansion’s aim is to increase family competency about children’s mental health by aligning the curriculum between parent and child programs and focusing on processing the trauma of experiencing and witnessing domestic violence. of young adults ages 21 to 26 who have developmental disabilities. The new therapeutic program will focus on socialization and communication for individuals once they have graduated from high school. This program will provide opportunities for individuals to interact with one another and engage in meaningful activities in a community setting. Lancaster Health Center received $15,000 for the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read initiative, which seeks to improve early literacy skills and make early literacy an integral part of pediatric checkups in early childhood. The initiative aims to promote language development in the first five years of life, as well as parent-child shared reading. Lancaster Public Library was awarded $12,800 to connect children and their families to the library and to offer valuable information from community professionals through the Play, Learn, and Grow Series. Early literacy, nutrition, and child development are a few of the important topics covered during the two five-week sessions. With a focus on non-traditional library users, as well as new and young parents, the workshops foster relationships between community resource providers and those who need them most. Compass Mark received a grant in the amount of $10,000 to expand the Family Services Advocate program that identifies the unique needs and rights
of children with incarcerated parents at Lancaster County Prison. Each child receives a needs assessment, case management, and relationship support, along with evaluations before and after receiving services. The program seeks to improve resiliency, connect children and caregivers to community resources, and help mitigate the impact of childhood trauma. LOHF’s grants aim to elevate children’s mental health by supporting local programs that target one or more of the following: improving the delivery of children’s behavioral health care services; enhancing the capacity of parents, families, and caregivers through trainings and support; and improving the capacity of providers to support and treat children. Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for children and youths from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available in 2019. Online applications are now available and must be submitted online by Friday, March 1, 2019. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org/grants. Readers may also contact Anna Brendle at 717-397-8722 or akennedy@lohfoundation.org for more information.

The country’s roadways are for all to enjoy. Tens of millions of cars take to the roads every day, but they are not the only mode of transportation allowed on the road. Cyclists and pedestrians also make use of streets when sidewalks or biking paths are unavailable. Although biking and walking are inherently safe activities for millions of people per year, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians can all take steps to make roads safer for everyone. Everyone should follow the rules of the road. Whether riding a bike or driving a motor vehicle, the rules of the road are the same. That means heeding traffic signals, signage, right-of-way, speed limits, and more. When using the roads, people should avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs motor skills, which are necessary to walk and operate cars and bicycles safely. Many accidents and fatalities on the roads can be traced to alcohol consumption. Individuals should not drink and drive or drink and ride. Pedestrians who need to walk heavily trafficked areas
would be smart to limit their alcohol consumption as well. Pedestrians and cyclists can make themselves more visible to motorists in various ways. Wearing bright-colored, reflective gear when walking or riding and installing reflective lights on bicycles are ways to be more visible. Drivers should remain alert at all times when behind the wheel. Motorists should be focused on the road at all times, avoiding distractions such as smartphones and in-vehicle entertainment systems. Such devices can dramatically reduce motorists’ reaction times, greatly increasing the risk of accident. Drivers should slow down when cyclists, runners, and other pedestrians are nearby. Drivers should pass safely and give room. They should not pass too closely when driving near cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Whether driving, riding a bicycle, or walking, everyone should work together to share roads safely. For more information, readers may visit www.nhtsa.gov.

The GateHouse held its annual alumni softball game on Aug. 26. The event, which was held at Rapho Park in Mount Joy, was attended by more than 300 alumni, family members, and community members.
The Lancaster Center for Classical Studies (LCCS) held its annual convocation celebrating the beginning of the school year. The LCCS offers courses in classical Latin and Greek, in classical Hebrew, and in modern German, French, and Italian. The convocation brings together the center’s wide range of students from diverse backgrounds and many levels of educational advancement, including homeschool, public school, and private school students, as well as adult students, from all parts of Lancaster County and beyond. The evening began with games organized by former Latin and Greek student Colin Boltz of Lancaster. Co-founder and teacher Laurie Brown presented the welcoming address on the power of Latin and Greek studies to break the hold of technological fascination on the human mind. She also read a letter from former LCCS Latin and Greek student Emelyn Hatch, who is majoring in Latin and Greek at Wake Forest University and who was reporting on the progress and direction of her studies. David Del Terzo of Lancaster, who has studied Latin and Greek at LCCS for 10 years, then spoke about the far-reaching
