Donations Needed For Annual Toy Drive

Light It Up This Christmas With A Contest

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

For the past 18 years, the Solanco Toy Drive has partnered with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries to provide gifts for families in need at Christmas time. Jodi Conklin’s twin daughters, Haley Conklin Hirthler and Emily Conklin Lasko, inspired what became the Solanco Toy Drive when they were in elementary school. Today, along with their husbands, Andrew Hirthler and Brock Lasko, as well as their twin

brothers, Matt Conklin and Marc Conklin, Haley and Emily organize and distribute the donations. This year, the toy drive will be dedicated to Jodi’s mother, Linda Kreider, who passed away in May due to COVID-19. According to Jodi, her mother looked forward to the toy drive every year. “She touched countless lives through our toy drive and offered up lots of hugs and prayers,” stated Jodi. “She will be missed, but it’s in her honor that we keep going.” See Toy Drive pg 3

The Solanco Toy Drive is organized by (from left) Emily Conklin Lasko, Haley Conklin Hirthler, Andrew Hirthler, Marc Conklin, Matt Conklin, (not pictured) Brock Lasko, and Jodi Conklin.

Jodi noted that she anticipates that about 100 families, which could include up to 350 children, will need toys this year. “It’s such a wonderful way to support our neighbors and those in need of a little Christmas cheer,” said Jodi. Toys and gifts suitable for children age 12 and under may be dropped off at Nickel Mine Floor Covering, 359 Buck Road, Quarryville; Quarryville Family Restaurant, 134 E. State St., Quarryville; Glam It Up, 4 S. Church St., Quarryville; and The Daily Grind, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville. Items may also be purchased from the event’s Amazon

Fulton Theatre Posts Greens Sale from pg 1 Magical Musicals The Fulton Theatre’s lineup for this fall includes Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” as well as “Snow White.” Fulton Theatre performs at the Fulton Opera House, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “Cinderella” opened on Nov. 11 and will continue on select dates through Sunday, Jan. 2. Inspired by the 1997 teleplay starring Brandy Norwood and Whitney Houston, this show is the largest production in the Fulton’s history. It features over 250 custom and handcrafted costumes, commissioned and created in collaboration with Maine State Music Theatre, and a carriage built exclusively for the Fulton Theatre in New York.

Performances of “Snow White” will take place between Saturday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Dec. 30. In this production, with original book, music, and lyrics by Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark, the seven dwarves grow up to be seven historical figures, and Snow White takes a journey to search for true happiness and learn to confidently make decisions for herself. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 717397-7425 or visit www. thefulton.org. Masks are required for all productions and must be worn at all times, except while eating or drinking in the theater or lobby areas.

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. Greens will be displayed and sold on a firstcome, first-served basis inside the society’s archive building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. Custom orders are also available and can be made until Wednesday, Dec. 1. Those interested in preordering can call the society at 717-548-2679 or Peg Wurst at 717-392-5023. Only cash and checks will be accepted as form of payment. To prepare for the annual sale, about five people make decorative items through the summer and into the fall. They craft ornamental arrangements, paint pinecones, tie ribbons and bows, and more. The greens themselves are pruned and cut after Thanksgiving. Wurst, a member of SLCHS’ archive committee, noted that handling and making items close to the sale keeps them fresh. Wurst also mentioned that there is a need for greens, so as people prune their boxwood, juniper, and other evergreen trees or shrubs, they can bring in a batch of greens

Volunteers will meet for five days from Monday, Nov. 29, to Friday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement of the society’s archives. Lunch and snacks will be provided. “It’s a lot of fun!” exclaimed Wurst. “And volunteers don’t need to be there all day. We will take whatever they can contribute.” Those who are not vaccinated are encouraged to wear a mask. “The holiday spirit comes once a year, and this show has it,” said Kathy Yoder, describing the Root’s Christmas Show. The show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature more than 250 vendors. “ We particularly like to accept artisans and people who make their own products,” noted Yoder, special events manager for Root’s. Items for sale will include holiday décor, gift baskets, candles, baby items, dog clothing and treats, spray paint art, toys, leather goods, braided rugs and much more. “Santa Claus - and I think he’s the real Santa - will be here between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” Yoder stated. “He and Mrs. Santa will walk among the crowd and give out candy canes and goodwill.” Food will be available to purchase, including soft pretzels, french fries, baked goods, soup, hamburgers, barbecue chicken, ice cream and more. “There are also tons of door prizes all day long,” Yoder commented. The show is always held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and this is its 17th year. “ We set up outside in the farmers market area, filling all the outside spaces,” Yoder remarked, adding that buildings 9 and 10 are also open. “We also set up in the flea market area, and the Artisan Mill and the Emporium are both open as well as many outside vendors.” In addition to supporting local vendors, the show benefits local nonprofits. Nonperishable food items will be col-

lected for the Manheim Central Food Pantry as well as donations for Centerville Pet Rescue and Angels Among Us Animal Sanctuary. “We also have a number of charity spaces that we give each year for different local charities to set up for free,” she said.

Homes For The Holidays BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For more than half a century, people have been peeking into the homes of Marietta residents at Christmastime. The 55th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes will continue this tradition on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We have eight homeowners who have graciously opened

their homes and decorated them in their own style for Christmas,” said Jason Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour along with Rebecca Baltozer. The tour is hosted by the Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), who operate the Old Town Hall Museum, 3 W. Walnut St., and the Union Meeting House, 80 N. The tour is a fundraiser for the MRA, which has worked to restore many of the public buildings in Marietta. “Our organization has been instrumental over the years in helping to preserve historic landmarks in town,” Spickler stated. He added that although Marietta is full of older homes, the tour offers a chance to see a variety of places. “We have homes in town that are modern. We have homes that were built in the early 1800s. It’s really an eclectic mix,” he said. “It’s about how the homeowners choose to decorate their homes and what their style is. You never know what they’re going to surprise you with when you walk in the door.” Advance tickets are available for the tour at several locations, which are listed at www.mariettarestoration.org. Spickler noted that this year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because they are not going to see the same things.” A search committee begins looking for homes to feature early in the year, he said, and although some homes have been featured in the tour more than once, the committee tries not to revisit a site for at least five years. Tourgoers will receive a booklet as their ticket, and it will include a map of the tour stops along with information about friends of the MRA businesses and organizations in town. The tour also features an option to travel to stops by bus. Participants can park and board the bus in the Donegal Intermediate School

Keeping Their Love Of Trains On Track

Members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad The display is located on the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, you can find a bunch of kids indulging in their passion. But these aren’t your typical kids - most are in their 60s and 70s. “We’re really kids who never grew up,” explained Chris Cohan, one of the younger members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad. “We just love trains.” The group shares its enthusiasm for HO-scale model trains on the fourth Sunday of the month from May through October. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the display runs on Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend after the new year. “We do this because we love it, and we do it for the kids,” said member Rick Christopher. “And, we do it for the kids who are maybe just a little bit older than you’d expect.” The 2,200-square-foot layout features a section depicting Columbia’s riverfront in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, created by member Tony Segro. “Tony scratch-built every one of these buildings,” said Cohan, noting that two in the layout still stand in Columbia today. Segro started on the layout in 2000, working on and off over the next 16 years to complete it. “I used photos from the historical society to make it as accurate as I could,” he stated. “They had a lot of information I could use.” The layout also includes scenes created by the imagination of the club members. For Walter Bosch, who came to check out the display on a recent Sunday and was joined by a crowd of other visitors, the trains offer a chance to indulge in nostalgia. “I love

watching them,” he said. Christopher noted that when he joined the club about four years ago, it brought him right back to his childhood. “I’ve loved trains since I was a little kid,” he said, echoing the sentiment of most of the members in the club. “When I started here, my love of HO trains just came flooding back to me.” “HO,” as Christopher explained, is the type of scale used for the model trains. The trains are 187th the size of their real counterparts, and the members said they believe it’s the best scale for displaying accurate details and providing

the best viewing experience. Membership in the club is open to anyone who loves trains. “We have no official officers, no dues, no membership fees,” said Christopher. “We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together. Our only rule is you have to get along with everybody.” The display is constantly evolving as new members join and add to it, so even if you’ve seen it once, you’ll see something new the next time you visit, Cohan said. And the members of the club are on hand each weekend See Model Railroad pg 12

s l a e D y a d i r F k c Bla

VisionCorps offers free programs, both in-person and virtual, to organizations and employers about its services. The programs, which can be individualized based on the needs of the group, include information on vision problems, living with low vision and employing people with low vision, as well as tips for living independently with blindness or low vision. VisionCorps provides programs and services to clients in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties. VisionCorps staff members can come to meetings and present programs or offer virtual programs. The programs include a general presentation about VisionCorps’ mission and services, specific rehabilitation tips for those living with low vision, and training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for employees who work with individuals who are blind or have low vision. All the programs are provided free of charge, and all services offered to clients of VisionCorps are free. To schedule a program or find out more, contact Linda Conyers at 717-205-4116 or lconyers@visioncorps.net.

The No Longer Alone Family Support Group will meet on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. Guest speaker January Abel, COO and certified peer specialist/supervisor at Recovery InSight Inc., will present on “Overview of the Wellness Recovery and Action Plan (WRAP).” A time of sharing will follow. The group, supported by Landis Communities, meets on the fourth Sunday of each month; the November date is a departure from this schedule due to Thanksgiving. Meetings will be held via Zoom until further notice and will return to Landis Communities as soon as it is possible. The monthly meetings provide a place for those who have a loved one living with mental illness to learn and share their experiences. For information on joining the Zoom meeting or to receive a monthly meeting reminder, readers may call 717-381-3599 or email JAlbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Nov. 19.
