The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will host the 28th annual greens sale on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, 6 miles south of Quarryville on Route 222. SLCHS members and other volunteers will assemble live greens and other items into a variety of shapes for decorating. Centerpieces, boxwood trees, grave blankets, and wreaths will be offered in a variety of sizes, styles, and colors. Some grave blankets will be decorated with patriotic colors for placement on veterans’ final resting places. Shoppers may also purchase bags of leftover greens to create their own decorations. Additionally, some customization of items will be available.

Each year, the greens are harvested after Thanksgiving from trees and shrubs growing at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, which is located across the road from the archives building and is owned by the SLCHS, as well as from community members’ properties. “Our neighbors here are really good,” commented SLCHS president Stan White. “With all the wet weather this year, the greens should be in great shape.” The sale committee is careful about what greens are used in the arrangements, opting to use evergreens that do not turn brown too quickly. “If the boxwood trees are watered from time to time, some people have them last until February,” said committee member Linda White. Volunteers are welcome to assist in creating the arrangements in the lower See Greens Sale pg 3

Solanco’s girls’ soccer teams officially capped their seasons with end-of-the-year banquets and recognitions. On Oct. 28, the high school team was honored at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Coaches Association All-Star banquet. Leading the way for Solanco was unanimous first-team Section 3 All-Star Alana Yoder, who was also recognized by the coaches as an All-League player. This honor recognizes the top 11 players across all four L-L League sections, and this was the first year a Solanco girls’ soccer player received this recognition. “Alana is a special athlete and that kind of player that creates opportunities all over the field,” offered head coach Ken Yoder. “She played the majority of the season in a defensive role and still managed to lead the team in goals scored with nine.” Joining Yoder in receiving post-season

for a single member, a couple, and a family of three or more. The company has announced the additional benefits of free CPR and bleeding control classes for all members, provided by Wakefield’s instructional staff. According to WAA, the main benefit to being a subscriber is having zero out-of-pocket expenses for any BLS, IALS, and ALS ambulance service during 2019, from Wakefield as well as Lancaster EMS. “Obviously we don’t ever want to be called out, but the reality is that accidents and illness can happen to anybody,” explained Chief Tyler McCardell. “The best option is to be prepared for the worst, and an ambulance subscription is one way to help protect you from unexpected bills down the road. When compared to a standard ambulance bill, the cost of a subscription is much lower.” While subscribers must have valid health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid to receive full benefits, uninsured subscribers and those whose insurance denies a claim are eligible for a discount on medical care. As well as the standard subscription, additional taxdeductible donations are always welcome. WAA depends on support

of the community to fund its operations, as it is a majority-volunteer emergency medical service company. “We think it is valuable to have high-quality care a few minutes away, instead of waiting for help to arrive from more distant locations,” said board vice president Phil Mahan. “Every membership and every dollar donated goes right back to serving local residents in an emergency.” In addition to subscribers, Wakefield is always looking for volunteers, both with and without medical training. “Running an ambulance company absolutely takes emergency medical technicians, but it also requires people with business, human resources, or public relations acumen,” Mahan added. “We are willing to work with anyone to find a role they can help with, either on the ambulance, in the office, or both.” For questions about the subscription drive, readers may call the station at 717-955-0152. Across from Rockvale Outlets Conestoga Area Historical Society member Linda Funk will demonstrate spinning and discuss fiber arts during the society’s Early American Candlelight Christmas event on Dec. 8.

Spinning A Historic Yarn Conestoga resident Linda Funk became interested in the process of spinning fibers into yarn thanks to family connections. Her husband’s grandfather had pieces of a spinning wheel in his attic, but after the younger man fished it out and assembled it, they discovered that a few pieces were missing. The wheel was relegated to a corner, where it sat for years. Then, while Funk was visiting historic

First produced by Servant Stage in 2015, this original adaptation is unique in that every word is taken from Dickens’ text, bringing the holiday classic to life through the collaborative storytelling of eight performers, all playing multiple roles. Dickens’ text will be interspersed with portions of musical narration set to the tunes of classic Christmas carols with original lyrics by Jon Rider, also playing the part of Scrooge.

All performances are offered as paywhat-you-will in keeping with Servant Stage’s mission to make performances accessible to everyone in the community. The show will tour across Lancaster County through Sunday, Dec. 23, including performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Dec. 2, and at the Ware Center, 42 N. held at the Strasburg house as well. David runs a YouTube channel, where, among other things, he posts videos of the family’s celebrations. Glimpses of the house as the renovations neared completion can be seen in the two-part video of Christmas 2017. When they heard that the family planned to move from New Jersey, fans of the channel sent housewarming gifts, and several DiFranco-branded items can be found throughout the first floor. Although the house looks good as it is now - Debbie is especially proud of the bucolic mural on the living room wall - the family still plans to add a few touches. Butcher block countertops are on the wish list for the kitchen, in which 7-foot ceilings harken back to its 19th-century origin. Dave also plans to set up a model railroad layout, but he does not expect it to be ready for the house tour. Eight additional houses will be part of the Holiday Home Tour, and three churches will participate as well. What organizers are calling Tour Central will be set at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., where guests may buy lunch

Travis will be performing traditional and original music with a few surprises, including audience requests during the second show.

500 Mount Sidney Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601

Early one morning, Dave DiFranco heard a horse and buggy clip-clop past his home on East Main Street in Strasburg. A bit later, the steam whistle of an iron horse wafted on the breeze. The two sounds drew a smile to Dave’s face. “I can stand hearing that every day,” he thought to himself. As of Nov. 9, Dave and his wife, Debbie, are full-time residents at the house at 51 E. Main St. The couple and their son, David DiFranco Jr., previously lived in Swedesboro, N.J., but for the past two years, every weekend has been spent in their new home, rehabbing it in preparation for full-time living. The DiFrancos initially purchased the house with David, who has since bought a home elsewhere in Strasburg. While the DiFrancos’ home is new to them, it was built in 1852 and has been added to over the years. At first, neither of the DiFranco men were interested in the property, as it needed a lot of work, but Debbie saw its potential. The two men came around, and the family made an offer. “I’m used to a very modern,

4,000-square-foot house, so this was a change,” Dave remarked. The family worked to refinish floors and paint walls. Debbie enjoyed shopping for Amishmade furniture, and she got to know more about her new community. The DiFrancos had been introduced to Lancaster County by friends approximately 15 years ago, and they had vacationed here every year since. “Everyone here is so welcoming,” Debbie observed. “This town is so friendly.” “We call this our Mayberry. It’s so nice to walk to everything,” Dave added. The house is set back from the street, making room for a tiny courtyard where the DiFrancos often relax in the shade of a large tree. The wrought-iron gate will be open to ticketholders from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, as part of the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour hosted by the Strasburg Heritage Society. Folks may tour the first floor of Dave and Debbie’s home, which will be decorated for Christmas. The DiFrancos enjoy celebrating holidays, and they have been in Strasburg for the past few Halloweens. Last Christmas, while more low-key than usual, was

favorites. The program will include “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy” by Andre Thomas, performed by the Solanco chorale; “Christmas Bells” by Drew Collins, performed by Crescendo, accompanied by Susanna Britton and Chad Young; “Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King” by Moses Hogan, performed by Crescendo; “Sing Joy!” arranged by Mark Hayes, performed by the community choir, a children’s choir, and the orchestra; “Carol of the Bells” arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky, performed by Crescendo; and more. Wesley Church pastor Blake Deibler will

serve as the master of ceremonies. Tickets are required for admission, and separate prices have been set for students and for adults. Proceeds will be used by the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF) to award grants to teachers and $1,000 scholarships to college-bound Solanco seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or folks may buy tickets in advance by contacting SEF executive director Keith Kaufman at keith_kaufman@solancosd.org or 717-786-5617. Groups of four to eight people will be locked in the basement of the crafts cottage and given an hour to find Jonah, exiting through the locked back door if they are successful. The room is wheelchair-accessible. Herr has created escape rooms for his friends, and he follows a specific process to design a successful event. “We come up with fun puzzles, then try to take a bunch of ideas and organize them into a straight line,” he said. “We use visual clues, physical clues, and logic. It’s hands-on, which is a lot of the appeal.” During their time on Jonah’s ship, participants should pick up everything in the room that is not a heavy object - such as several trunks - in search of clues. They may be required to assemble tools to retrieve clues or find puzzle solutions on disparate items. “It’s fairly challenging, but a staffer will provide hints, and we

something, so I volunteered to spin, Funk said. “I sat on the porch of the Atkinson House and later on the second floor of the Harnish House because they didn’t have this, she added, gesturing to the row of workshops in the museum that highlight fiber arts, tinsmithing, pottery, and other practical arts. “There is so much history in here. If you want to start collecting, this is the place to come to see what you don’t have because we have it. Funk now owns spinning wheels made in Lancaster County in 1802 and 1808 by S. Humes. When reenacting, she dresses to match in garb worn in the very early 1800s, but during demonstrations at CAHS events, she spins colored fibers so visitors are not confused by the cream-colored drive bands on her wheels. Members of the public may

observe Funk and other artisans in action during the Early American Candlelight Christmas event that will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the museum, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. The paths among the buildings on the site will be lighted by lanterns and luminarias. The structures themselves will be decorated in the style of a mid-19th-century Pennsylvania German Christmas. “Technically, before the Civil War, there would have been practically nothing (in the way of Christmas decorations), said CAHS curator Ken Hoak. “Only the fancy Germans celebrated Christmas. After the Civil War, Christmas became a religious holiday and a secular holiday. Until sometime in the 20th century, only Episcopalians, German Lutherans, German Reformed, and Moravians celebrated Christmas. Thus, Christmas would not have been observed in the log house built for the Quaker Atkinsons. The same would have been true of the Harnish House, which was the home of Mennonites. Hoak noted that both structures were built by Germans. The Atkinson House has the same floor plan as the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, and the Harnish House is one of only six Sweitzer bank houses in existence in Lancaster and Berks counties today. “It’s pure Germanic architecture. There are no stairs to the upper level, Hoak said, adding that the design would have made moving between floors uncomfortable in bad weather. During the Dec. 8 event, a punch and cookie reception will be held in Gundel Hall, where seasonal music will be performed by pianist Sharon Gantz, vocalists Jack and Kendra Hamlett, and the Manor Singers from Penn Manor High School. At 9 p.m., a drawing will be held for a Pennsylvania black powder long rifle. Opportunities to win will be available until right before the drawing. Additionally, copies of several historical maps will be offered for sale during the event. For more information about the event, readers may call the historical society at 717-872-1699.

from Solanco Neighborhood Ministries shared words of thanks and encouragement. She noted that the funds will support the work of the Solanco Food Bank. In addition, Emily Miller, a Solanco School District elementary teacher, shared insights about how children at the school

where she works appreciated the Solanco Food Bank SWEEP program. Participants enjoyed a pleasant 5-mile walk through Muddy Run in support of the fundraising efforts. Many participated in a scavenger hunt while they walked. Children collected small items, while adults

took photos of the items on their scavenger hunt list. Prizes were awarded to those who successfully found all or most items on their list. Planners of this event look forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Solanco CROP Walk in October 2019.
