Gift drive slated in Southern End BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
he annual Southern End Gift Drive will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Monday, Dec. 11, from 2 to 6 p.m., at Joyfully Made Fellowship, 75 Mount Hope Road, Quarryville. The drive will be open to families with children 18 years old or younger who live in the Solanco School District. Donations may be dropped off until Friday, Dec. 1 at any school or administration building in the Solanco School District, as well as various businesses and churches in the area. This is the second year that the school district will hold the Southern End Gift Drive, and the project is being spearheaded by social workers Avery Hill and Shanna Hecker. The drive combines the previously held Solanco Toy Drive and the Angel Tree Project. Through the Angel Tree Project, Hill collected wish lists
Knights of Columbus will host Thanksgiving meal BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Members of the Knights of Columbus will host a free Thanksgiving meal on Friday, Dec. 1, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 955 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The meal will begin at 5:30 p.m., and it will include fresh turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, a green vegetable and a choice of apple or pumpkin pie.
The meal was previously organized by the Knights of Columbus annually. The tradition was known in the community as the Flowing Oil Café, and various churches throughout the Southern End would coordinate the location of other meals throughout the year. The Flowing Oil Café ceased to exist when the COVID-19 pandemic compromised the safety of large gatherings. Although it no longer operates under the same
and Hill is confident that it will be equally successful this year. “There is a lot of need, and we are looking forward to bringing some holiday magic to our community,” Hill said. This year, Hill and Hecker have partnered with Tami Shaub to host the drive at Joyfully Made Fellowship, a newly established special needs ministry. “We would like to thank all of our volunteers and amazing donors who continue to support this project,” Hill said. “This would be impossible without the generosity and compassion of all of us coming together every year.” To register a child for the gift drive, parents and legal guardians may visit https://tinyurl .com/SEgiftdrive23. To view the full list of drop-off locations, search for “Southern End Gift Drive” on Facebook. For more information, contact avery_hill @solancosd.org.
Gift drive coordinators (from left) Shanna Hecker, Brandon LeFevre, Avery Hill and Tami Shaub invite the community to help every child in the Southern End to have a happy holiday.

from students throughout the school district; each student received five items from his or her list for Christmas. Last year, Hill directed the focus of the Angel Tree Project to serve the needs of students who were experiencing homelessness, and the inaugural gift drive sought to provide for the remaining students in need. The Angel Tree Project was established close to 10 years ago not only to ensure that every student in the Solanco School District has a happy holiday, but to acknowledge the issues that he or she may be struggling with outside of school. The program was sustained by a wave of support from the community, gradually expanding the range of students who could receive support as well as including items such as winter clothing. The 2022 Southern End Gift Drive served nearly 350 students,

always see an increase in demand over the winter months. We started the event because the holidays can be hard for people.” Pet Pantry offers a wide range of services for hundreds of families every month, including affordable spay and neuter procedures and discounted veterinary services. In addition to providing pet owners with free litter, cat food, dog food and treats, Pet Pantry homes more than 500 animals in Lancaster County every year. The organization completed a remodeling project last year to expand its services and hire an additional veterinarian. With this additional team member, Pet Pantry has been able to increase the number of vaccine clinics and other services it offers to the community. Following the renovation, Pet Pantry acquired a new building to house more dog kennels. Sanders said she also plans to utilize the new location as a designated trapneuter-return clinic for feral cats in the future. Individual lights are available to purchase for the ceremony. In addition to the Thanksgiving meal, the Knights of Columbus remain busy with various community service projects during the holiday season. The organization recently collected more than 70 winter coats, which it will donate to children in need for Christmas. The Knights also offer financial assistance and coordinate fundraisers for local veterans with disabilities and organizations such as A Woman’s Concern. Members of the Knights of Columbus frequently volunteer to assist individuals who may be unable to complete certain projects on their own; In the past, they have fixed mailboxes and pressure washed homes for their church’s parishioners and neighbors. “That’s just what the Knights do, and it’s what we’re all about,” Fiorentino said. “To try to spread love and good will.”

After the volunteers place the turkeys in the oven for at least three hours, the majority of their time is spent peeling potatoes for the homemade mashed potatoes recipe. The volunteers are divided into two shifts: The
