SECA To Host Santa, Reindeer BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
hildren and adults will have one more opportunity to meet Santa Claus - as well as one of his real reindeer - when the Southern End Community Association (SECA) hosts its first-ever Santa & Reindeer in the Park event on Monday, Dec. 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will be held under the lights at the outdoor skating rink near SECA’s building, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Children may sit in Santa’s sleigh for photographs taken by a photographer provided by SECA. To ensure social distancing is maintained, appointments are required to meet Santa and pose for photos. Guests may drop in anytime during the event to view the reindeer, deliver letters to Santa’s mailbox, and check out the decorated Christmas trees that are slated to line the driveway. SECA president Barb Tollinger explained that area nonprofit organizations are invited to decorate trees, which will be accompanied by buckets in which visitors may deposit cash from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The organizations will keep

Nearly 50 students in the Solanco School District are considered homeless and just under 50% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. None of the students is unsheltered, but they are doubled up or sharing residences with other families, are living in transitional housing or motels, or are unaccompanied youths. School social worker and homeless liaison Avery Hill works closely with these students to ensure they

Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host Journey to Bethlehem, a walk-through live Nativity, on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. “In a year that has been obviously challenging on so many levels, and so many church ministries have been postponed or canceled all together, we didn’t want to give the appearance that the holidays were being shelved. The project was organized by CLPC Life, the congregation’s fellowship committee, which includes Amy Rineer, Barbara Josephian, and Heather Musser. Josephian and Hartman collaborated on the script, which features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s throne room, a shepherds’ field, an innkeeper’s house, and the manger. “The goal of the Life committee is that people will experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the story so the story leaps from the pages of Scripture and into their hearts,” Hartman said. “We also want to make it fun. We’re taking some creative license.” Josephian noted that attendees will be formed into socially distanced groups that will be guided through the scenes by costumed actors who will interact with various characters at each vignette. At least 50 people are involved in the production. Goats, sheep, and a miniature horse are slated to be included in some scenes. Rineer noted that support for the event extends beyond CLPC. supporting health and wellness for residents. The Wellness Journal is an extension of Fizikaflex, Fizika’s smart wellness app that helps seniors living in affordable housing communities to improve their health by monitoring daily activities like eating, sleeping and exercising. Users can document their progress in an online journal and share results with their peers. The idea for a print journal emerged from working with HDC staff and residents on the pilot program as a solution for residents who lack technology to fully utilize the app. In response to resident needs, Seniors BlueBook and Fizika also opted to make the journal fully bilingual, and each page features an outlined box with Spanish translation for all activities. The easy-toread 12-page workbook includes ideas to help seniors begin their wellness journeys, including recipes for healthy eating, creative approaches to mindfulness and engaging activities like word searches and word scrambles. Wellness Journals were scheduled to be distributed to 1,300 residents living in housing obtained through affordable housing providers in Lancaster and York counties, including senior residents at 27 HDC MidAtlantic affordable housing communities in Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties. Distribution was planned for November. For more information on the Fizikaflex Wellness Journal, readers may contact Martha Lester Harris at martha@fizikagroup.com. The publication is available for download at www.fizika group.com/wellness-journal.

group thinking, Brackbill said. “We started discussing it in January or February, and then the pandemic struck. We realized that for the homeless families in the district, things weren’t going to get better,” Brackbill recalled. Solanco Strong became operational in August, and the SEF has been actively fundraising for it. Members started by requesting donations from Solanco employees via the payroll deduction program, and then they solicited district retirees. An apparel sale was held in November, and Hill plans to run another at a later date. Some extras may be available, and readers may email Hill at avery_hill@solancosd.org to be placed on the waiting list. “Now we want to reach out to the community so they can donate also,” Brackbill said. Donations may be made by visiting https://solancoeducation foundation.org/ and clicking on “Donate Now.” The SEF has budgeted $12,000 for the school year. “If we need to raise more money, we’ll go out and raise it,” Brackbill said. He noted that for years, the SEF had primarily awarded senior scholarships and teacher grants for classroom projects.

But sometimes there are gaps, such as when a child’s prescription medication is unaffordable or back-due internet bills prevent virtual students from accessing free internet plans. Enter Solanco Strong, the new initiative of the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF), which supports Solanco School District’s most vulnerable students and their families with resources and financial assistance to help them succeed in school. “Being able to supplement (existing resources) is good and a real gift,” Hill remarked. “Just being able to meet needs that can’t be matched through community services is a blessing for families (in Solanco).” Solanco Strong has two branches. One is geared toward family needs, and the other meets individual student needs related to education. These include the costs associated with Advanced Placement exams and the purchase of uniforms and tools for students who are dual-enrolled in career-training programs. SEF president Tom Brackbill acknowledged similarities between Solanco Strong and the Strong & Healthy Families Initiative of the Penn Manor Education Foundation (PMEF), which the latter launched in 2016. Thomas was nominated by Shea Zwerver, policy specialist for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Karl Graybill, environmental planner for the City of Lancaster. She is being recognized for her work with under-represented residents in Lancaster city and for establishing Lancaster Tree Tenders. Thomas has led Arbor Day activities as well as street tree and riparian buffer planting events involving members of the community. In 2019, Thomas organized an Earth Day tree planting at a lowincome housing development. For Thomas, the Dock award will provide trees to continue her work with the residents of Lancaster and to increase the tree canopy there. Mira Lloyd Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. Dock was also part of the movement led by Harrisburg businessman J. Horace McFarland to preserve Niagara Falls. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation launched the Keystone partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Since then, cumulative efforts by CBF, the 149 groups of the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly 1.74 million trees.
