Wesley Church Launches New Network Center By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The past six years have been momentous at Wesley Church. The congregation, having outgrown its chapel at 7 Wesley Road, Quarryville, moved into a new facility at 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, in 2012. Three years later, Wesley left the United Methodist denomination and began operating as an independent church. In 2016, Wesley Church launched La Cosecha, a Spanish-speaking congregation. The following year, the new group moved into the chapel. At the end of 2017, members of what was once Colerain Baptist Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood, approached the leaders of Wesley Church and asked to merge with the larger congregation. The adoption was finalized this year, and Wesley now

has a Colerain campus. Colerain’s pastor, Bryce Wendler, has teamed with Wesley’s director of operations, Rich Stevenson, to lead the young adult ministry. 2018 also saw the opening of the Wesley Network Center. Located in the same building as the Daily Grind coffeehouse, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, the center now houses pastors’ offices and offers space for individuals and groups to meet. Lead pastor Blake Deibler explained that as Wesley has grown, the church considered adding a new Sunday school wing to its main facility but opted instead to move the offices into the network center, creating more space for classrooms and opportunities to reach the public in new ways. “ We’re looking to impact our community,” Deibler explained. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,” said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic and we invite the neighbors to socialize

A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,” she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a nine

-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.” Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance)

“It is pure and total relaxation. I have had the pleasure of seeing Claudia Kirk (Reiki Master) three times so far. I knew I had to do something about how I felt – tight, tense and a lot of joint pain. I saw the article announcing the opening of her practice and thought, ‘why not?’ I am so glad I made that phone call! Reiki is very different from any other massage I’ve had. For me it is about getting rid of the negative or blocked energy we all have in our bodies due to everyday living and stress. Through Claudia’s healing touch, Reiki has allowed me to experience positive, relaxing energy.”

Our hope for this campus of Wesley Church is to see people reached with the love and power of Jesus Christ.” Following a renovation coordinated by director of student life

community held at the Farm and Home Center, where people can try reiki for a donation. This work deepened and strengthened Kirk’s commitment to the principles of reiki. Following Kirk’s retirement from the Quarryville Post Office, she looked for an opportunity to practice reiki in the borough and connected with Buttriss. Buttriss is a certified life coach, wellness coach, fitness instructor, and reiki master. In her journey to understand the human body and how food and emotions affect it, Buttriss discovered the reiki approach to energy and healing. She is excited to combine reiki with her life and wellness coaching to provide clients with a

Kirk and Buttriss assert that reiki can be used in addition to conventional medical care because it is noninvasive and has not been shown to have harmful effects. In a 2015 article, “Reiki: In Depth, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health described reiki as “a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of facilitating the person’s own healing response. Kirk became a reiki master in 2009 because she had benefited from reiki and wanted to share it with others. In 2016, she began working at the Lancaster Reiki Clinic, a monthly outreach to the

lessening of physical pain. According to Kirk and Buttriss, reiki is offered in health care facilities, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and New Jersey. Kirk and Buttriss also noted that at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital, reiki is available to clients after total joint replacements and in the chemotherapy infusion suite. Some studies have reported that reiki may help to reduce pain, anxiety, and blood pressure after knee replacement surgery. Readers who would like to try reiki for themselves may schedule appointments by calling Kirk at 717-786-2144 or Buttriss at 717-314-0408.

well-rounded way to address issues regarding health and weight. In addition, Buttriss has also given reiki to horses at Noble Hill Horse Rescue. When humans receive reiki treatments, they remain fully clothed and relax on a table with a pillow. During sessions, which run for 30 minutes or an hour, the practitioner will use various hand positions on or above the client’s body, primarily the head, shoulders, abdomen, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Kirk and Buttriss noted that many people become deeply relaxed and enter a quiet state of slumber, and they have reported feeling increased warmth emanating from practitioners’ hands. After a session, clients may feel relaxed and less stressed, and they may feel a

service may be completely silent, or at other times vocal ministry may come in the form of prayer, praise of God, song, teaching or witnessing. Worship ends with the shaking of hands. The Sadsbury Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1747. Historically a peace church, Sadsbury Friends played a part in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Originally, men and women gathered for worship in separate rooms, with partitions between them that could be opened or closed, but that separation is a part of the past. In modern meeting houses, men and women sit together. For the Christmas Eve service, the main floor partitions at the meeting house will be opened for the larger-than-usual gathering. To honor safety standards, doors will close when all seats are taken. Blank said that last year, some of those who attended the service were in the area visiting

Live Christmas music will be provided by Brenda Sauder and her daughter, Faith, accompanied by Louise Ranck on the piano. “ We will have poetry, Bible (passages) and reflective readings and periods of contemplative silence,” Blank explained. “There will also be a fire going in the fireplace, which was how the Quakers (in olden times) stayed warm. It was all they had (as a source of heat).” At the end of the service, everyone will sing “Silent Night” together. There will be light refreshments downstairs in the church hall following the service. According to www.sadsburyfriendsmeeting.org, the congregations of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, do not have a pastor and there are no set readings during normal services. Instead, members gather for silent reflection. Should people feel moved to speak, they may share their thoughts with the group. The

Trees Planted Within City The Lancaster City Alliance and community members of all ages planted 35 trees recently in areas of Lancaster city with little to no greenery. The trees will create a dramatic new entrance to the city’s southern gateway at South Queen Street and Highland Avenue. The tree planting is one part of the South Prince & South Queen Streets Neighborhood Enhancement Project, led by Lancaster City Alliance. The overall project includes improvements to fronts of homes, Adopt-A-Block participation, placement of sidewalk trash cans, and 100 trees for the neighborhood. The project stems from requests from neighbors and is part of recommendations in the city’s Building on Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan. The recently planted trees were made possible through many groups working together to benefit the city. This includes Lancaster City Alliance, City of Lancaster, Community Action Partnership, and Lancaster Tree Tenders. Funding was provided by the High Family Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ TreeVitalize Program. Walnut St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Led by artistic director and conductor Brian Norcross, 50 musicians and nearly 90 singers will present a repertoire designed to capture the joy and merriment of the Christmas season.

Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) students were recently challenged to go 48 hours without using their smartphones or social media accounts. Jimm and Kaylene Derksen, chapel speakers for LMS’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, focused on the theme “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the

Kaylene (left) and Jimm Derksen, during Lancaster Mennonite High School’s Commitment Week from Oct. 16 to 19, highlighted the kinds of disconnection that people can experience from God and other people. Beautiful” over four different sessions. They highlighted the kinds of disconnection from God and other people that one can experience, sometimes resulting from smartphone addiction. The Derksens are both certified soul care providers and also staff members at Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM). Jimm is a personnel placement coach and Kaylene is the development director. One of EMM’s three core values is well-being. EMM seeks to improve the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of its workers and those whom they serve around the world, as well as stakeholders. Lancaster Mennonite School students are among those whose well-being EMM seeks to enhance. Students were encouraged to fill their smartphone voids by journaling about what they noticed. One student observed a woman sitting on a bench next to her making a scarf. The student was inspired to make a scarf as a result of stopping to notice the woman next to her. In her own way, not being on her phone helped her enter into creativity. Other students shared about how they had a greater sense of respect and appreciation for people around them as a result of disconnecting from their smartphones. A common observation among the students and staff members who took on the challenge was that they had more time due to not using their smartphones or social media accounts. The goal was not just to disconnect from technology, but to also use the time as an opportunity for students to reconnect with their communities. Focusing on how disconnection from others can eventually lead to dehumanization, the Derksens addressed human rights crises in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, and Syria. As the 550 students exited the auditorium after the last session, teachers stood at the doorways with bowls of chocolate truffles. Each student was handed a truffle and sent off with the statement “You are a gift.” Lancaster Mennonite School holds chapel services four times per week at its Lancaster Campus.

GCCWS Will Host “A Great Celebration” By Dayna M. Reidenouer

R026463

Beautify fy Your

Floorss F

Enhance the look of your home with fabulous flooring choices.

The theme for Christmas at Grace Community Church of Willow Street (GCCWS) this year is “A Great Celebration.” “During a staff meeting, (lead pastor) Mike (Sigman) said, ‘We’re going to have a great celebration. Bring me your ideas,’ so we’re going to do as many things as we can,” explained worship coordinator Alyssa Mayersky. Because Christmas will be observed on a Tuesday this year, GCCWS, 212 Peach Bottom Road, Willow Street, will hold seven services over the course of three days. They will all be livestreamed at www.gccws.net. Identical Christmas-focused worship services will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23. All four services will conclude with the singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight. Sunday school for children from nursery age through fifth grade will be offered at 9:15 and 11 a.m. Identical family celebrations will be held at 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. The services are expected to run for an hour and will include congregational singing, a short children’s message, the distribution of a gift to

each child, and the performance of a fully produced musical. “The Mystery of the Manger: It’s the Gospel Truth” was created by Celeste Clydesdale and arranged by David T. Clydesdale. It is directed by Katie Wieand and involves approximately 50 children. The musical will relate the tale of an investigative reporter who attends a dress rehearsal for a Christmas production on the search for the true story of Christmas. “The goal is for the children to be ministers. They’ll lead the worship,” said children’s ministry director Patty Deiter. “It’s a great opportunity for them and a blessing to the congregation.” GCCWS will also hold a Christmas celebration at 7 p.m. on Dec. 24 in the Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The school was the temporary meeting space for GCCWS for 13 weeks this summer while the church had its parking lot enlarged and an addition put on the building. GCCWS has elected to keep its sanctuary of modest size to provide a small church feel, but church leaders would like to host one Christmas service where most of the church

body as well as guests can worship together. During the musicheavy event, Sigman is slated to preach an evangelistic sermon about Mary’s response to the announcement of Jesus’ impending birth. “It’s definitely a big undertaking,” worship pastor David Julian commented. “Every single piece has a different arrangement of instruments. We intentionally textured it that way.” Julian noted that the music will cover a range of styles, including bluegrass and rock. There will be an a capella choir, strings, and a horn section, as well as spoken word performances. “We need 131 unique positions to pull off that service,” Julian said. “It’s pretty intense.” He praised LMS as a gracious partner in the use of the facility and stated that technical director Ryan Rohrer has been amazing. Guests are welcome to join the GCCWS congregation in celebrating Christ’s birth. They are also invited to attend regular worship services, which are held at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and at 8, 9:15, and 11 a.m. on Sundays. For more information about “A Great Celebration,” readers may visit www.gccws.net or call 717-464-5333.

Farmland Trust Holds Annual Dinner

FINAL DAYS!

R026962

Lancaster Farmland Trust celebrated its 30th anniversary at its annual dinner on Oct. 23. More than 230 friends, farmers and supporters attended to honor three decades of land preservation in Lancaster County. The event, which was held at the Eden Resort and Suites, raised $150,000 for farmland preservation in Lancaster County. Event attendees heard from Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding about the value of farmland and the partnership that has been forged between county government and Lancaster Farmland Trust to save farmland. Redding and state Rep. Keith Greiner presented citations to Lancaster Farmland Trust in recognition of 30 years of farmland preservation. The highlight of the evening was Lancaster Farmland Trust’s annual Acres for Auction at which attendees entered “bids” to preserve a farm. During this year’s successful “auction,” the organization raised enough money to preserve a 155-acre farm in West Cocalico Township. In the past year, Lancaster Farmland Trust preserved 10 farms. Five of those farm families were on hand to accept a token of appreciation for their commitment to farmland preservation. During the evening’s festivities, the Trust honored its other contributors and volunteers. The Amos Funk Spirit of Cooperation Award was presented to the Ressler Mill Foundation for its support of farmland preservation in the Mill Creek watershed. The Benefactor of the Year Award was awarded to G. Donald and Marilyn Hess for their leadership support of the Trust’s current and future programs. The Darvin Boyd Service to Agriculture Award was presented to Frank Ludwig, longtime volunteer for the Trust and preserved farm owner, for his efforts to preserve farmland in Earl Township by establishing the Earl Township Farmland Preservation Trust. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to John Martin of John Martin Photography for capturing Lancaster Farmland Trust’s mission through his photographs.

Karen Martynick (right) greeted guests during the Lancaster Farmland Trust’s annual dinner on Oct. 23.
