A focus on prayer
Community members rally for Richie BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Tim Farrell, one of the leaders of the Lancaster Prayer Breakfast, which was held for the second year on Nov. 3, said that when the committee organized under the Leaders of Faith Foundation, the goal was to make the event unique, with prayer as the key component. The group decided to focus on six areas - business, government, art/media, education, family, and church - and ask a community leader to lead prayer on each of those segments. Each speaker asked
table groups to pray on a subject and then concluded by leading the gathering of more than 400 in prayer. Master of ceremonies Tracey C. Jones, president of Tremendous Leadership and T3 Solutions, opened the event, saying, “The Lancaster Prayer Breakfast endeavors to further the rich heritage and spiritual guidance handed down by the Founding Fathers … and magnify Jesus Christ through unified prayers.” Worship music was provided by Dave Ross, pastor of worship ministries at Calvary Church, See Prayer breakfast pg 3
During his stay at the hospital, 6-year-old Richie Metzler has received more than 100 Christmas cards from friends and supporters throughout the local community.
Last February, Richie Metzler, then 5 years old, of New Providence was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor. A few days later, his mother, Desiree, created a Facebook group to make it easier for her to answer questions from concerned friends and family members, as well as to provide updates on Richie’s treatment. “Prayers for Richie” has since grown to comprise hundreds of members who are cheering Richie on as he battles cancer. Shortly after his diagnosis, Richie, who recently turned 6 years old, began a series of
chemotherapy and stem cell treatments at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. He remained at the hospital several months as he received treatment. Richie returned home for a few weeks in August before traveling back to Hershey for a final round of high-dose chemotherapy. Due to health complications that resulted from the treatments, Richie required a specialized series of proton radiation doses. On Oct. 13, Richie was moved to the Roberts Proton Therapy Center located at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The facility is the only hospital in the area that offers the unique procedure, and See Prayers for Richie pg 9

Church, spoke about Jesus’ prayer in John 17. “Jesus prays for Himself and the purposes of God, then for the disciples and then for us all those who would be His followers,” Eshleman said. Eshleman focused on unity among the churches in Lancaster County. “I want to pray with thanksgiving because God has been doing a work among us, bringing (area) congregations of different expressions (of faith) together under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said. The prayer breakfast is scheduled to be held on the first Friday of November each year. More information may be found at https://leadersoffaith. org/event/2023-lancaster -prayer-breakfast.

who read from Philippians 2 and led three songs. Don Hoover, retired CEO and current facilitator of Business Community Network, prayed for the business community, noting that Jesus said, “I must be about My Father’s business.” “It’s crucial for us to understand God’s purpose and will for us as individuals,” he said. Sen. Ryan Aument asked attendees to join him in lifting up the government - elected and appointed officials, first responders, and the military. “Pray for vision, courage, perseverance, and strength to serve in love and lift up their families and to preserve their marriages,” said Aument. Doug Myer of WDAC prayed for art and media, quoting Franklin Roosevelt’s address to Congress that concluded with the Four Freedoms Speech. Myers focused on the freedoms of speech and expression of every person to worship in his own way. “God help us think clearly, act rightly, and do so in a spirit of love,” he prayed. Beth Haldeman, assistant to the superintendent of the Cocalico School District, prayed for education, with special attention to families, atmosphere, students, teachers, and staff. She specifically prayed for schools of all types to be “places of enrichment and nourishment.” Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/ Youth Understanding, spoke about sin, brokenness, and the need for a redeemer and new life, and he pointed out current cultural issues facing families. “We are here by God’s design in this moment,” he said. “We pray that You would fill all families with a hunger to live Your will ... to understand our responsibilities before You. May we seek to live out Your kingdom way in our families to Your glory,” he said. Kevin Eshleman, lead pastor of Ephrata Community

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s expansion project reached a pivotal moment as 10-year-old Isaiah Martin, a Schreiber client diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta type 3, became the first client passenger on the newly installed elevator by Benchmark Construction, following its state inspection and certification. Isaiah, the center’s resident elevator enthusiast,
was entrusted with the responsibility of inspecting the elevator to guarantee its flawless operation. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Isaiah checked off every element on the inspector’s checklist provided by Benchmark Construction. The checklist consisted of essential elements such as functioning lights, operational buttons, seamless opening and closing of doors, and a

Isaiah’s signature on the inspection form signifies not just an approval of the elevator’s functionality but also Schreiber’s commitment to providing its clients with a safe and inclusive environment where they may grow and thrive. and Ruffed Grouse.” Larkin and the graduate students will report on their research on the decline of ruffed grouse and scarlet tanager. The students’ research studies the causes of decline over a period of decades, methods to gather data, and possible solutions to reverse the decline of these birds in Pennsylvania. Students Jacob Goldman and Randall Koleck are studying the effects of habitat management on ruffed grouse, including using various technologies to determine the effects of various types of habitats on grouse occupancy. Student Tyler Hodges, specializing in avian ecology, is studying high-quality breeding habitat that supports scarlet tanagers and how forestry management practices affect tanagers both with positive and negative outcomes. A short business meeting will precede the program. The event is free and open to the public. The club will also
sponsor four Lancaster County Christmas Bird Counts. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with
much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected See Bird club pg 8

friends and classmates from the Wee Friends Preschool in Quarryville expressed their support for him via cards and notes. More than 100 Christmas cards later, Desiree has lost count of the letters they’ve received, and Richie is beginning to run out of space on the windows of his room to hang them. “I was amazed by it,” Desiree said. “Richie wants to open every single one, so we read them to him and clip them up on the window. He gets a big smile on his face every time.” Richie loves collecting Hot Wheels and building Legos, and his current favorite superhero is Captain America. The Metzler family will continue to accept Christmas cards for Richie until Christmas. For more information, including a mailing address and a link to a fundraiser for Richie and his family, search for “Prayers for Richie” on Facebook and view the Nov. 7 post.

Richie was moved quickly to decrease the chance of his tumors returning. As of Nov. 28, he had received seven of 30 proton radiation doses. On Nov. 7, Desiree created a post in Prayers for Richie to update its members on the development in her son’s treatment. In the post, Desiree asked Richie’s supporters to help her with an idea to cheer Richie up by helping him have his best Christmas yet. Since the diagnosis in February, he has spent almost the entire year receiving treatment, and he will remain in the hospital until after the holidays, so Desiree asked members of the group to send Richie a Christmas card. “The cards are to cheer him up and show him people are still praying for him and rooting for him to get better,” Desiree said. Less than a week after she made the post, Christmas cards addressed to Richie began to pour into the Metzlers’ mailbox. Richie’s family members,
