Students at Smith and Swift middle schools will enjoy special events on Friday, Dec. 21. At Smith, a Giving Day will be marked. Eighth-graders will participate in activities that support others, both locally and globally. Every student will spend 20 minutes in each of several sessions. At the SPCA Animal Station, students will make dog toys, box donated blankets for delivery to the SPCA, and learn about the SPCA and opportunities to assist in kennels. The Hospitalized Children Station will feature opportunities for students to create “busy bags” featuring items of interest for hospitalized children to enjoy. At the Military and Fire Department Appreciation Station, students will write letters to U.S. veterans and military personnel and will also learn about the requirements and responsibilities of volunteer firefighters. The Reach Out to American Native Children Station will allow students to create bookmarks for donation to children on Navajo Indian reservations. At the Global Connection and Local Support Station, Smith PRIDE Ambassador students will use their artistic talents to create drawings and will box arts and crafts materials for delivery to a preschool in Bayahibi, Dominican Republic. Students will also learn about the local food bank, create “Sweep Bags” of donated food items that are provided to
local families, and write inspirational messages to include in the Sweep Bags. The Local Opportunities Station will feature retired Solanco superintendent Dr. Martin Hudacs, who will speak with students about giving back to the community and what it means to be a member of a community. For more information about Giving Day, readers may email Smith Middle School learning support teacher Sara Parrish at sara_parrish@solancosd.org. Seventh- and eighth-graders at Swift will enjoy the annual Career Day. They will have the opportunity to hear speakers from blue collar careers, white collar careers, STEM careers, and nontraditional careers. Volunteer presenters will include a veterinarian, a surgeon, an electrician, a construction safety worker, a professor, a photographer, an attorney, an athletic director, a police officer, an author, a job recruiter for tech careers, a manufacturer, a farmer, a pediatrician, a mechanic, and a business owner. The goal is for students to gain a better understanding about what careers are available, how education is connected to their career, and what interests and abilities are needed for the careers of interest to them. Many of the presenters will provide hands-on experience with visuals and manipulatives for students to explore the world of work.

“It is pure and total relaxation. I have had the pleasure of seeing Claudia Kirk (Reiki Master) three times so far. I knew I had to do something about how I felt – tight, tense and a lot of joint pain. I saw the article announcing the opening of her practice and thought, ‘why not?’ I am so glad I made that phone call! Reiki is very different from any other massage I’ve had. For me it is about getting rid of the negative or blocked energy we all have in our bodies due to everyday living and stress. Through Claudia’s healing touch, Reiki has allowed me to experience positive, relaxing energy.”
Nearly 170 combined years of experience! Seated (from left): Mackenzie Ranck, Sue Cox, Kim Rinier. Standing (from left): Kendra Dochterman, Amanda Hardy, Chris Sensenig, Denise McCardell, Marylou Mckinney. • “The Ladies at Headquarters are super friendly, and make me smile the whole time I’m in the chair! Wouldn’t go anywhere else!!” - Kim • “Because I come here every week, it truly feels like I am visiting family - both with the staff and other clients that come regularly! Bless you all! - Dianne • “Love all these ladies at Headquarters! Very personable, professional & always eager to please the customer. Great place!! - Gerry

Holtwood farmer Steve Groff, owner of Cedar Meadow Farm, is featured in the documentary. In the mid 1990s, Groff became convinced that cover crops can fertilize soil, suppress weeds, and impede pests - all things that might otherwise require chemicals such as fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides. In addition, some of his fields have not been touched by tillage equipment for more than 30 years. According to Groff, cover crops used in conjunction with notillage systems provide the ideal scenario for building soil quality, and no-till farming preserves nitrogen in the soil while
cover crops help soil-stored nutrients become more available to cash crops. The documentary is directed by Chelsea Myers, founder of a video production company that specializes in documenting real moments and real people. Michael R. Molla was installed as the third president of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was bookended by a kickoff breakfast, featuring community engagement tips from Michael Bunting of Lancaster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepening connections. The program reintroduced PCA&D to the Lancaster community and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Special speakers were Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists; Fred Lazarus IV, president emeritus of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and the Hon. Danene Sorace,
mayor of Lancaster city. The event also included a video message from Samuel “Sammy” Hoi, president of Maryland Institute College of Art. Afterward, the PCA&D family and members of the Lancaster community gathered at PCA&D for a celebration that included food from the many traditions represented in Lancaster, along with music. All elements of the celebration related specifically to Lancaster. Molla said that his alma mater, Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., was like PCA&D in being a small, focused, personal college that emphasizes individual student’s needs, active learning and mentorship. Molla served at MICA for a total of 26 years and led the college in the areas of student affairs, operations and strategic initiatives. As the associate vice president of student affairs, he launched MICA’s first residence life program and established a student affairs division for the college, which included on-site counseling and health care services, as well as diversity and safety initiatives. As vice president of operations, Molla was responsible for the development of the Campus Master Plan, including the design and construction of resident facilities; numerous academic, studio and shop spaces; a center for graduate education; and, most recently, an undergraduate design center. In the vice president of strategic initiatives position, Molla was
responsible for strengthening the relationship between MICA and the city of Baltimore, including facilitating new urban initiatives to engage the community in support of the arts and expanding opportunities to city residents. In Lancaster, Molla seeks to explore the possibilities of the college’s contributions to the city of Lancaster and vice versa. For more information about PCA&D, readers may call 717-396-1032 or 800-689-0379 or visit www.pcad.edu.
