Long To Succeed Lininger As Solanco Principal The Solanco School Board has approved the hiring of Scott Long as principal at Solanco High School. Long has served as high school assistant principal since 2015. He will succeed current principal Stephanie Lininger, who is retiring following a 35-year career at Solanco High School, including the last three years as principal. Long joined Solanco in 2012 as a middle school physical education teacher, becoming assistant high school principal three years later. “I am really excited to be taking on my new role as principal at Solanco High School. The most exciting part of this job is getting to work with our students and teachers,” Long said. “Our students are kind, caring, (and) courageous, and (they) take responsibility for their learning. We have phenomenal teachers who routinely go the extra mile and do whatever they can to ensure our students are

successful. I am honored that I have been given an opportunity to be a part of that process.” Solanco superintendent Brian Bliss is pleased with Long’s ascension to the new position. “I am thrilled Scott is moving into this leadership role,” Bliss remarked. “He believes in each student and will continue to commit himself to enabling each child to reach his or her potential.” Long is in his fourth year as Solanco varsity boys’ basketball head coach, a position he will resign following the season. Long’s first day on the job as high school principal will be Monday, July 1, 2019. Prior to working at Solanco, Long served as an adapted physical education teacher at Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 from 2007 to 2012. He worked as a teacher in the health and physical education department in the Pequea Valley School District in 2006. See New Principal pg 5

LCCC Presents Donations At Car Show presented for $23,000 to Clare House and for $22,500 to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). During the year, LCCC members sold giveaway drawing tickets for a new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of

Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and

events through the year. These activities also raise additional funds for Clare House, the club’s dedicated primary beneficiary. For more information, readers may contact Mooney at 717-898-2766 or govenor@lcccpa.com. Information about the charities is available at http://clarehouselancaster.org/ and http://chipmiller.org/. The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a one-year voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional

reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered

nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports need-based scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlapp volleyball.weebly.com. Players and teams that wish to register may do so by searching for “Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball” at www.active.com. Registrations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.

“Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glenstyle play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division.

The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To

community as principal at the high school. She has also supervised a number of other important programs, including the Student Assistance Program (SAP), development and implementation of the district’s crisis response and management plan, and student attendance and discipline concerns. Lininger graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1985 with a degree in social studies. She received her principal certification from Penn State Great Valley in 1994. She looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Bill, and participating in new volunteer opportunities to serve the community.

Solo Flight from pg 1 and organizational management bachelor’s degree program with a concentration in aviation. Since 1917, Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), a faithbased liberal arts university, has emphasized peacebuilding, sustainability, service to others, and social justice to students of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. EMU educates undergraduate, graduate, professional, and seminary students to serve and lead in a global context from the main campus in Harrisonburg, Va.; the site in

Lancaster; and online. The EMU experience aims to challenge students to pursue their life calling through scholarly inquiry, artistic creation, guided practice, and life-changing cross-cultural encounter. Slocum attends the EMU at Lancaster campus, 1846 Charter Lane, Lancaster. He has been interested in aviation since he was about 7 years old. “My grandfather was a pilot in the military and told me many fascinating stories,” Slocum recalled. “I decided this was in

be controlling the aircraft all on my own,” he added. After successfully landing the plane, Slocum was lauded by having the back of his shirt cut off, signed, and dated. Historically, before instructors and their students began using radios to communicate in noisy cockpits, an instructor seated behind a student needed to tug on the back of the student’s shirt to get his or her attention. The removal of a new pilot’s shirttail following a first solo flight shows that he or she no longer needs an instructor escort. The flight had been postponed three times, so Slocum was more than ready to fly. He described the flight as exhilarating. “It was a wild experience to

concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency

road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center www.customercare.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000

The Lancaster Airport Authority dedicated and unveiled the sculpture “We Care to Dream” at a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Lancaster Airport. Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the permanently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight. During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator, Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. For nearly 23 years, Miller gave his time and talents to the airport’s growth and success. He served on the Authority board, most notably as chairman, from 1998 until his death in 2016. Along with Miller’s widow, judge Margaret C. Miller, family, friends and business associates attended the ceremony.
