Warwick school board zeroing in on best superintendent fit

Because it’s in the education business, the Warwick Board of School Directors assumes many crucial responsibilities and makes a host of impactful decisions concerning the community. But few things on the school board’s agenda are as important as hiring a superintendent.

The Warwick Board of School Directors’ search for the district’s next superintendent is well engaged and nearing a conclusion. From all reports, the eight-month process of hiring the school district’s new leader and most influential policymaker has been both meticulous

and rewarding.

“Hiring a superintendent is one of the most critical functions of the board,” said Emily Zimmerman, who’s been the Warwick school board’s president for two years. “The superintendent sets the pace, the tone and the agenda for the entire educational experience of our student body.”

“We’re excited with the direction things are going. Both in number and caliber, these candidates have been excellent.”

The Warwick school board has narrowed its superintendent search to three candidates in an effort to replace April Hershey, who left the position on June 30, 2024. Those three candidates are expected to be interviewed by the school board - as well as other district officials - for a third time over the next few weeks.

At Overlook Activities Center, hockey’s on

On the one hand, it’s about playing a beloved sport and revisiting the days of youth.

On the other, the pickup roller hockey program promotes staying young and remaining healthy.

Sponsored by the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department (MTRPP), pickup roller hockey is one of the few organized programs out there designed to address the

physical and mental health of adults, especially men.

“They’re guys who just really love hockey and love the game,” said Jeff Green, an MTRPP program manager who’s overseen the pickup roller hockey program for the last eight years. “Ice skating is much different than roller or inline skating. It’s an avenue. These guys are friends, and they’ve gained friendships through pickup roller hockey. They’re just average guys. They come when they’re able to,

After publicly posting the position, the Warwick School District received more than 30 applications for the position from across the country. From those applicants, 12 received

initial interviews, and then five were recalled for a second round of interviews.

Coats for Kids warms extremities and hearts

Picture this: A makeshift store containing aisles and aisles of brand-new kids’ coats separated by sizes, styles and colors. Families in need can enter, peruse the winter coats, select one and take it home.

That’s what Coats for Kids looks like. That’s what the Salvation Army means when it says, “Doing the most good.”

“My favorite part about Coats for Kids is when the kids go into where the coats are,” said

Roller hockey

and it’s open to everyone.”

By nature, pickup roller hockey is very informal and laidback. Individuals 18 years old and older simply show up at Overlook Activities Center’s Roller Skating Rink, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster, on Sundays between 7 and 10 a.m.

Following a warm-up period, Green divides the group of individuals into teams of six to eight members. The teams play against one another in an alternating fashion, for a designated period of time - for as long as 12 minutes - usually without keeping score.

Pickup roller hockey is played at Overlook Activities Center from early December to the middle of March when many of the more formal local outdoor roller hockey

leagues are on sabbatical for the winter. There is a fee involved with playing pickup roller hockey at Overlook.

“It’s pickup hockey at an indoor facility,” said Green. “It’s a very old-school type of just show up. People get a good workout and a good skate in. I enjoy playing here because you are playing for fun. It’s very good exercise.”

Roller hockey is different from ice hockey in that each side consists of four skaters and a goalie, a ball is used in the place of a puck and the playing surface is wood instead of ice. Players at Overlook are required to wear gloves, helmets and shin pads for safety.

“I wouldn’t consider it competitive,” said Green. “It’s recreational. Everybody’s paying the same, and

we’re all there to have fun. We have some guys who are really good. A lot of the guys are regulars, but we make everyone feel welcome.”

On any given Sunday, between 20 and 22 individuals show up to play roller hockey. The players hail from Manheim Township, East Petersburg, Ephrata and other communities across the county.

“Some guys play two or three times a week,” said Green. “A lot of guys love hockey, and this is their go-to place for the sport they love. The facility is a nice big rink. It is a great program as far as men coming together.”

“I’ve been skating my whole life at that roller rink,” Green continued. “It’s about the friendships you grow through hockey. I love the game, but I don’t place ice (hockey). I go

Warwick superintendent

“We are pleased with the quality of candidates we’ve interviewed,” said Zimmerman. “We’re excited with the direction things are going. Both in number and caliber, these candidates have been excellent. We saw that in the interview process and digging into backgrounds. The school board remains committed to the integrity of the superintendent search. We remain vigilant in our attempt to identify the most qualified candidate and the right fit for the Warwick School District.”

The Warwick School District could identify the successful candidate by as early as late February or early March. But the school board would like to have its next superintendent in place no later than Tuesday, July 1.

“A superintendent is the chief education officer of the school district,” said Zimmerman. “He or she oversees the operations and executes the district’s strategic plans. He or she

also keeps the board well informed and plays a positive role in developing staff.”

“People probably have a general understanding of the role that superintendents play,” added Zimmerman. “But there are a lot of responsibilities, roles and duties that are internal.”

At the discretion of the school board, the successful superintendent candidate will be offered a three- to five-year contract by the Warwick School District.

“We are definitely looking for an educational and organizational leader to execute the mission and vision of Warwick,” said Zimmerman. Hershey served as superintendent for 15 years.

“Dr. Hershey faithfully served the Warwick School District,” said Zimmerman. “I’d say she was hard-working and knowledgeable. She was a very effective communicator. I had a strong working relationship with

Women’s group to meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and

Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

The program will be “What Are You Thinking? Replacing Lies With Truth” by Susan Joy Simkins; this program was rescheduled from Jan. 7 due to inclement weather. Simkins will share the strategy God outlines in Scripture for exercising dominion over what one permits into his or her mind. Simkins is a college professor and author.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. No preregistration is required. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

to NHL games all the time.” Very much in line with MTRPP’s stated mission of providing recreational activities for its residents, the origin of the pickup roller hockey program at Overlook predates this century.

“For me, it’s almost like mental and physical relaxation,” said Green. “I love my family and my job, but this is my one time throughout the week to have that avenue and let things go. It’s a stress reliever to focus on the game you love to play. Everybody has that one thing they use to relax; for me it’s hockey.” For additional information about Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, go to www. manheimtownship.org/1617/ Recreation-Park-Planning.

Dr. Hershey and I’m grateful for that time.”

Since Hershey’s departure, assistant superintendent Steve Szobocsan has served as the school district’s acting superintendent.

“He’s done an amazing job of stepping into a very difficult position,” said Zimmerman. “The board has had an opportunity to work with Dr. Szobocsan, and we’ve seen incredible leadership from him. He’s done a great job of keeping the district’s mission intact and moving forward.” For additional information, go to www.warwicksd.org.

Coats for Kids

Shady Boules, who’s been Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ operations and development manager for five years. “You see their eyes open. I tell them, ‘Go ahead; pick a coat.’ They’ll answer, ‘Do you mean I can pick a coat? Do you mean I can pick my favorite color?’ For some, it’s their first time. To see kids making a decision on what things they can wear is very rewarding.”

It is at that exact moment when all the hard work that goes into the Salvation Army Lancaster’s Coats for Kids program becomes worth it.

The 30th annual initiative to make sure every kid in Lancaster County has a brand-new winter coat continues. Coats for Kids, which is currently being implemented at the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ headquarters’ gymnasium at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster, kicked off its efforts in October, and the program will run through the end of March or until the weather turns warmer.

community members, members of churches, companies and service clubs and students - to make Coats for Kids run smoothly. In the early days of September, local television station WGAL helped raise $130,000 for the program.

“We’re very thankful for the people who believe in this service,” said Boules. “We are blessed to have a generous community. We want to tell the community that we’re here to help. The door is still open.”

“Once fall arrives, some people start thinking, ‘How do I get coats for my kids?’” said Boules. “We want kids to be able to go to school and make sure the other kids can’t tell their coats came from the Salvation Army. We treat our neighbors with dignity. We want them to be proud of their coats.”

This season’s Coats for Kids initiative has already distributed 1,900 brand-new kids’ coats to kids and families in need from Lancaster County. The Salvation Army expects to hand out another 600 coats before the end of the winter season. Individuals can still donate brand-new coats by dropping them off at the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ headquarters, or they can

“If people have more coats, we’d appreciate it. We need more coats all the time,” said Boules. “We hope we’ll keep doing it. Every single dollar for this program goes right to Coats for Kids. It doesn’t go anywhere else. We want to make sure we have enough coats for next year and the year after.”

The Coats for Kids program is designed for kids up to 16 years of age who reside in Lancaster County. Following an application and interview process, each child in need is permitted to choose one coat.

“We cover every ZIP code in Lancaster County,” said Boules. “Some people think we’re only serving people from the city, but that’s not true.”

“It gives hope to the children when they know there’s a community standing behind them,” Boules continued. “We have a lot of people dropping off checks and saying, ‘We were part of this program years ago. I’d like to give back and pay for someone else.’”
