A Taste Of Decadence Kiwanis Plan Second Wine, Cheese, And Chocolate Event
uring the spring of 2020, Karen Davis, Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area publicity representative, saw a video of an event held by a Kiwanis Club in California. She thought the event might work well in Lititz, so she shared it with another member, and the first Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party was held in 2021. “We have had requests from people who were involved in the first virtual party in January of 2021 to please do it again,” said Davis. The club has responded by organizing the second Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Tasting Party to be held via Zoom on Friday, March 11, beginning at 7 p.m. Each Zoom engagement will include commentary about pairings. Those who take part will pick up their party bags on Thursday, March 10, at a specified location in Lititz. The Zoom portion of the event is sponsored by Moravian Manor Communities. “Each party bag will contain three bottles of wine from Portugal. Along

“This dog has been helpful to all of us. We are all bonding with her,” said Jennifer Musser of her family’s decision to adopt 2-yearold Wesla, a female yellow Labrador retriever that was trained by Guiding Eyes for the Blind, but not assigned to an owner because of confidence issues. Jennifer’s son, Chase, who is 7 years old and is blind, has been receiving help from VisionCorps since the age of 6 months.

with the wine will be tastes of cheeses and chocolates to complement each bottle,” said Davis, who noted that each bag will contain enough food samples and wine for four people to enjoy. Chocolates will be provided by Evans Candy. Club members sampled the items that were chosen to be included in the bag at an early January meeting. “We share the (tasting) responsibility,” noted Davis, who added that research and consultation with cheese purveyors was done for the commentary. Proceeds from the local Kiwanis Club’s events traditionally benefit various local organizations. “Everything we do is for the benefit of children,” said Davis. Volunteers are invited to help with the fastnacht bake and they’ll be offered handson training, Mahan said, noting that no one is striving for perfection. “Our fastnachts are like snowflakes. No one is like the other,” she stated. “They are all handmade. No machines are used.” And on the rare occasion a fastnacht turns out that can’t be sold, it won’t go to waste. Explained Lutz, “There’s noth-

Erase bothersome varicose and spider veins with the latest minimally invasive techniques, and start loving your legs.
For almost 100 years, Holy Trinity Catholic Church members have been serving up “a little bite of heaven.” That’s how they describe their homemade fastnachts, which will be sold at the church beginning on Monday, Feb. 28. Sales will continue Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 23. Preparing the fastnachts which volunteer Jim Knapp said number 620 dozen each day - requires a full battalion of workers. “We make the dough at night, and it rises overnight,” explained volunteer Karen Sahd, noting that the dough rises in special cupboards set up in Our Lady of the Angels School across the street from the church. “The next day, it gets rolled out and rises more, and then it’s fried.” The rolling process is an allday job that begins at 4 a.m., and it includes exact steps, said volunteer Betty Mahan. “There is a specific way you have to roll them, and you never turn the dough,” she remarked. “You release the dough up from the table before you cut them. It’s a specific process.” Knapp, who has been volunteering with the fastnacht bake for about 15 years, is in the charge of the frying room and the glazing room. The fastnachts are available by the dozen either plain or glazed, and Knapp said the latter is the most popular choice. “Sixtyseven percent of what we sell are the glazed ones,” he noted,
adding that the fastnachts are dunked fully in the glaze. Knapp explained that Holy Trinity’s fastnachts are nothing like a doughnut, although both have a hole in the middle. “A doughnut is cake-based, and these use yeast dough,” he said. “Ours have a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.” Fastnachts were traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up lard before Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Easter. “We don’t use lard in ours, and we don’t stop making them the day before Lent,” Sahd said. “We actually go three weeks into Lent.” As Knapp joked, “We’re slow eaters.” In all seriousness, the sale is held annually as a fundraiser for Our Lady of the Angels School, which provides instruction to children through grade eight. Volunteer Kathleen Lutz said the fastnachts are so popular, they often sell out. “We have people who ship them out of state,” she said. “People also freeze them because they freeze well.”

Day effort, the couple collected toys for the children’s ward of Lancaster General Hospital. The toys were available to children in the hospital on Easter morning in 2021. The couple heard from a mother whose daughter was admitted the night before. “(The little girl) was worried that the Easter Bunny wasn’t going to find her,” said Leanne. “(The mother) messaged us and said her daughter woke up with an Easter gift and that meant the world to her,” added Patrick. In April 2021, the ministry collected essential items for Water Street Mission, and in May it created gift bags to help encourage women who are clients of Clare House. Over the summer, care packages were prepared for new patients of the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center, and in October, art supplies were
collected for women being served by North Star Initiative. In addition, local artist Paris Llanso visited and taught an art class. Prior to Christmas 2021, the Buckners offered donors an opportunity to purchase bags of Christmas items, including devotionals and Patrick’s CD. The donors picked up the bags at an event held at Colerain Church. The gathering included a reception with food, games, and Christmas music. “We opened it up to the whole community,” said Patrick. The donors filled out invitations to include with the bags that asked the recipient to attend church with them. Since the arrival of 2022, the couple has collected hats, gloves, and scarves for those in need in the city of Lancaster and repeated the Valentine’s Day card effort for QPRC, but added Friendship Community to the recipients. The Buckers are also organizing an Easter toy drive for children at Penn State Hershey Medical Center through Thursday, March 31. “We are hoping to expand (the ministry),” said Leanne. “I want to always do more to reach out and proclaim the good news.” Patrick agreed. “ We are bringing Jesus to the world,” he said.
More information about the ministry may be found at www.unashamedministries pa.com. Readers who have questions or who would like information about dropping off donations for the toy drive may email unashamed ministriespa@gmail.com or call 717-847-6447 or 856803-3517.

By 2020, Patrick was an associate pastor at the nondenominational Colerain Church, located at 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood. That is when he met Leanne Quartuccio, originally of New Holland. Patrick and Leanne married in August of 2021, but the February prior to that, they launched Unashamed Ministries together as an outreach, beginning with the collection and delivery of Valentine’s Day cards to residents of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC). Now living in Lititz, the couple has continued with regular outreaches. “We had a vision to go out and be the hands and feet of Jesus to just help people,” explained Leanne. “We choose a different outreach every month in the local community.” Following the Valentine’s

Winter might not seem like yard sale season, but if you can’t get outside for a bargain, you can still find deals inside at the Ruhl’s Church 22nd annual indoor yard sale. The event will be held in the church fellowship hall, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. “We have 32 stands selling all varieties of items,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “Friends and family of church members and people from the community have stands. Some people have had a stand for years.” Along with yard sale stands, the event will feature a food stand serving egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, beef barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and drinks. New this year, there will
be a table of new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages offered free of charge. “ We have done a table like that at our God’s Clothing Closet event in August in the past, but we thought this might be a nice way to get devotional material into people’s hands if we added it to our yard sale,” Gray explained. The yard sale is a fundraiser for the missions and activities of the Sunshine Sunday school class. The class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter and supports the church’s participation in filling shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse at Christmas. The class also hosts a banquet for senior citizens and plans to donate some of the proceeds to local ministries. In addition to supporting the church, the yard sale

serves another purpose, said Barb Dunmire, one of the event organizers. “It’s a chance to reach out to the community,” she stated. “I personally really like to talk to the people who come out year after year. I like the relationships you build with people you don’t see from one yard sale to the next. It’s nice to chat and catch up.” She emphasized that the event is handicapped-accessible and open no matter
how chilly the weather is outside. “It’s a really convenient way to go to a bunch of yard sales all in one place, rather than having to go to individual houses,” she said. “People are itching to get out and get their yard sale fix, and they can do that here.” Neither pets nor smoking is permitted inside the building. Masks are optional. For more information, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.

the organization was still actively looking for a dog,” said Jennifer. In early November, the Mussers got the call that a dog had been found. On Dec. 8, 2021, Chris Ament, VisionCorps director of rehabilitation services, and education brought Wesla to the Mussers. “I got Chase out of school early so he could be there when she arrived,” said Jennifer. “It was really neat for him to meet her.” Because of her age and training, Wesla is calmer than a puppy would be. Along with being house- and crate-trained, Wesla came with a list of commands, which Jennifer said she follows. Chase quickly took on feeding duties, and Jennifer reported that Wesla stays close to Chase and lies under a blanket with him. “She listens well to (Chase),” said Jennifer. “We are getting to know her, and she is getting to know her place here.” Jennifer noted that Chase was very excited to have Wesla in his life. “He said, ‘She is the best dog ever,’” recalled Jennifer, who added transitioning to having a dog has not been difficult. “ We are blessed to have been chosen for the program,” reported Jennifer. “It has been an overall good experience for our family.” VisionCorps is a Lancaster nonprofit that works to empower the blind or visually impaired to attain independence. Lititz Springs VFW Post 1463, 14 N. Spruce St., Lititz, will hold its monthly breakfast on Sunday, March 6, from 8 to 11 a.m. There is a suggested donation per person, with proceeds going to the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). VFW Post 1463 holds a breakfast on the first Sunday of each month. The funds from the upcoming breakfast will help to support the CAP squadron’s cadet, aerospace education and emergency services programs. The cadet program, for youths age 12 and above, provides opportunities to develop leadership skills, character and physical fitness while learning about military life, engaging in search and rescue activities, and experiencing aerospace as a potential
career choice. The aerospace education program engages members in theories of flight, propulsion, and diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects made available by the U.S. Air Force. Emergency services skills are honed by CAP members in preparation for search and rescue missions, including disaster relief and other humanitarian activities. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 meets each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Venture Jets hangar at Lancaster Airport, located at the corner of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Visit www.gocivilairpatrol.com or www.cap.news for more information.

Jennifer said the family had been seriously considering getting a dog before March of 2021, when the family was contacted by VisionCorps. “(VisionCorps) had the opportunity to partner with Guiding Eyes for the Blind to (match) a dog from Guiding Eyes with a family that has a child (ages 5 to 15) with vision impairment or that is blind who may benefit from having a (guide) dog in the future,” said Jennifer. The connection was made through PAWSitive Pals partnership program, which finds homes for dogs that were not able to complete guide dog training. “Adopting a dog (can) build that relationship and (teach the) responsibility of caring for the dog to help the child in the future,” explained Jennifer. After learning of the opportunity, the Musser family completed an adoption application. Then, they waited. In September 2021, Jennifer was at VisionCorps, and staff members asked if she had heard anything. “(VisionCorps) reached out to Guiding Eyes and learned

In 1999, the carousel was returned to Lancaster and purchased for $1.3 million, all private donations raised by the Rocky Springs Carousel Association. When the association’s plan to locate it in a public square in Lancaster’s downtown did not materialize, the carousel was placed in storage, where it remains today. Gregg’s book tells the story of how the expectations of those who had contributed to the carousel’s purchase collided with the realities of city policies. The book’s 234 pages include photos of 14 animals on the Rocky Springs Carousel that were professionally restored between 2005 and 2008. Other than a dog and a rooster, which were put on display for a short time, the animals have not been seen by the public since their restoration. Truist has become a key partner in the YMCA’s work to improve the lives of everyone in the York and Lancaster communities, especially newcomers to the area and those experiencing financial insecurity. The current partnership between the YMCA of the Roses and Truist began in 2021 with a $10,000 grant to the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center, which works with immigrants and newcomers in York and Lancaster counties to give them the support and resources they need to thrive in their new homes. The partnership is continuing in 2022 by way of Truist’s $50,000 donation through the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) to the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center to empower all individuals facing financial hardships. In addition, leadership from Truist is serving on the YMCA’s
Diversity, Inclusion and Globalization Committee to ensure the YMCA’s policies and operations are inclusive and welcoming for all. Truist’s team is working with the YMCA’s staff to conduct workshops on relevant topics, including virtual banking, identity protection, budgeting and entrepreneurship. YMCA branches across York and Lancaster counties will host these workshops for newcomers, older adults and general community members free of charge. To see all the supporters of the YMCA’s work through NAP, visit www.rosesymca.org/nap.
