Cleanliness makes beautiful downtown Lititz even more appealing
BY JEFF FALKIt’s kind of like having people over. Before they come, you might want to organize things and redd up a bit.
Putting the downtown’s best foot forward is what Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup all boils down to. But as the annual cleanup has evolved, it’s really become an event revolving around community pride.
“It’s not just for Lititz to be clean,” said Shirley Flickinger, co-chair of Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup committee. “People care about their community. It gives you a good feeling when your downtown is clean, and the merchants love it. I think people care what the community looks like. They’re proud of their area, they’re proud of their town, they’re proud of where they live.”
Cleanliness is, after all, next to godliness.
Venture Lititz’s annual spring cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon over 14 blocks of the downtown business district, specifically
“Venture Lititz truly thinks the downtown area of Lititz is important.” heavily used portions of Main Street and Orange Street. In the case of rain, the spring cleanup will be pushed back a week to Saturday, May 4, at the same time.
Flickinger emphasized that cleanup participants don’t feel like they’re toiling. “Everybody
is happy. We’re having fun,” she said. “Everybody works together. It’s nice to have the older generation mixing with the younger generation.”
Armed with gloves, brooms, rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows, volunteers typically pick up about 35 bags of trash and sweep sidewalks. Weeding is performed before donated mulch is spread around the bases of downtown trees.
“We divide the sections up,” said Flickinger. “One group takes one section, and another group takes another section, and we all mulch at the end.”
More than 60 volunteers are expected to participate in Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup. They are civically minded individuals and members of Warwick athletic teams, service clubs, youth groups and local businesses.

BY JEFF FALKYou’ve undoubtedly heard of fishing for trout, fishing for compliments, even fishing for men. Well, this is a kind of fishing with a different result.
The Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament is all about helping and supporting veterans. Local teenager Case Baccio is the fundraising event’s founder, organizer and promoter.
“The mission is to support
veterans and their families and recognize the sacrifices they made for us,” said Case, an enterprising seventh-grader who attends Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “They protect our country and keep us safe. It’s a show of gratitude to our nation’s heroes. A little bit can go a long way. You don’t have to do something big. It’s just a way of saying, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDAccording to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals
who are experiencing a housing crisis.
One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will be included

in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.
A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.
On average, GSS has served 300
people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year.
The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record
Plant exchange set for April 28
The Lititz Historical Foundation in conjunction with the Lititz Garden Club will hold its annual plant exchange on Sunday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. The exchange will be held in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the museum buildings at 137-145 E. Main St., Lititz. The event will be held rain or shine. The plants to exchange must be perennials and must have identification tags. Each plant must be placed in a container
for transportation. Upon arrival, a ticket will be handed out for each plant. The plants must be placed in categories including sun, shade, exotic, bulbs, herbs and ground cover. These tickets can be redeemed for another plant after all plants are placed in the categories and the attendees have sufficient time to explore the categories. For more information, call the Lititz Historical Foundation at 717-627-4636.
levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”
The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from
individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”
Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting .com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.

day, May. 4. To help them locate the artisans, attendees may pick up a map at the entrance of the Woods Building, 600 W. Sixth St., Lititz, located off the parking lot in the back of the building.
Resident and non-resident artisans will exhibit their arts and crafts on porches and in garages, as well as at the Lark Lane Pavilion and the Fireside Lounge in the Woods Building. Attendees may view the works of painters, weavers, potters, jewelers, photographers and more and talk to the artisans about their techniques. Box lunches provided by the Owl’s Nest may be purchased in the Fireside Lounge.
The arts and crafts show benefits the Moravian Manor Communities’ Benevolent Care Fund and wish list.
Fishing tournament
Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament, the fifth, will be staged at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration will open at 7 a.m., and lunch will be served after the competition.
“We just want to give back in some small way,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “This is our way of doing it. There are so many veterans’ organizations out there. We want to reach as many individuals as we can.”
The fishing competition will award prizes to the top three adult finishers (16 and older) and the top three youth finishers (15 and younger) according to the aggregate weight of their catches. About 50 total anglers are expected to participate.
“I’ve always been really interested in outdoor stuff,” said Case. “I love to fish, and most people I hang around with love to fish. So I figured I’d start a fishing tournament.”
All proceeds from the Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament will go to Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals, as well as other local veterans’ organizations. If the event raises as much money as Case hopes - $10,000 - it would push the total amount raised by Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament over the years to nearly $50,000.
“The more participants we have, the more fun the event is,” said Case. “Some of the fishermen have heard of our organization and want to support the mission. Some people we know and some people we don’t know.”
“He does everything,” said Ali of her son. “He’s the face of the organization. It’s his thing. He goes to all the businesses asking for money.”
Case established the event in 2020, when he was in elementary school, after attending a Warrior Weekend, an event designed to provide support for veterans.
“I do it because when I went to Warrior Weekend it made me realize how many people need assistance,” said Case, who’s a Boy Scout and also a member of MTMS’ football, wrestling and track and field squads. “When I got back, I knew I had to do something to help veterans. That’s how we came up with the event.”
“He’s just a really caring person,” said Ali. “He’s an incredible kid. He’s compassionate. He’s driven. He’s an excellent student. He’s an excellent classmate. He just wants to give back and help.”

“It’s awesome to be a part of it,” said Flickinger. “That’s why people do it. It’s pretty amazing how many people show up. We’re always extremely surprised.”
Venture Lititz started its spring cleanup 10 years ago. At the outset, the event only involved about 20 volunteers, mostly Venture Lititz board members and their friends.
“It’s just kept growing; more people want to come and help,” said Flickinger. “We’re getting ready for people coming to see Lititz. We start the spring season by cleaning up.”
“I think Lititz has a good reputation in the county,” she added. “People want to come visit Lititz. I think a lot of towns want to be Lititz.

I think we’re viewed positively. I think people in the county love Lititz. That’s such a good, good feeling.”
Venture Lititz exists to improve the downtown business district, promote local businesses and attract visitors.
“Everybody takes pride in their own property. That’s just part of the community,” said Flickinger. “Everybody is supportive of what Venture Lititz does. We try to do what’s best for the community.”
