Are you familiar with the concept of performers singing for their supper? Well, this is kind of like musicians playing to connect with the community and seeking its support, only much more.
The Warwick Bands Food Truck Festival has truly morphed into a community happening filled with good will and fellowship and enhanced by a lively atmosphere. There’s just something about music that seems to make everything better.
“Outside in the park, it’s one of the best days of the year for the kids,” said Matthew Tenaglia, the
Warwick School District’s band director. “We really get to see the community come together. They get to see people enjoying themselves in (the bands’) presence.”
“It’s like a summer block party.”
The annual Warwick Bands Food Truck Festival will go down on Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.
“It’s like a summer block
party,” said Tenaglia. “That’s the vibe we’re going for. It’s joyous from beginning to end. You see people talking to each other. For the kids, it’s like the start of the summer season. It’s like an ideal day, and you don’t have to cook. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than eating great food and listening to good music in downtown Lititz.”
The festival will feature 16 food trucks serving everything from french fries to seafood, from brisket to funnel cakes, from pretzels to doughnuts. The event typically draws hundreds of band supporters, family members and community members, and all the proceeds from the event
BY JEFF FALKContested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.
Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).
NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise money and awareness in the fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of the blossoming sport.
“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole
community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”
The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at
BY JEFF FALKNew isn’t necessarily improved; bigger isn’t necessarily better. But when the topic is mental health services, more is almost always desirable.
Samaritan Center is expanding its counseling services. It’s a move intended to provide more hope for a healthier, happier and better-adjusted community.
“We know that counseling works, that it improves lives,”
said Steve Schedler, executive director of Samaritan Center.
“For many, it’s a game-changer. What people come in with is very diverse, but there are some common threads. Counseling can give people a different way of thinking and navigating emotions and how they handle relationships. There are also these positive examples of people growing.”
At the beginning of April, Samaritan Center opened a
the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place.
Teams of two players can register by going to www.northstarinitiative. org/events before Friday, June 7.
“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are as an organization.”
NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.
The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.
“It’s a mix of everyone,”said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”
NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023 that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.
“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.
“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s ultimate goal is to have survivors graduate and live a life of independence, whatever that looks like for them.”
Located in Lititz and founded in 2010, NSI conducts two other fundraising and awareness events throughout the course of the year: the Welcome to the Battle anti-trafficking event in January and Light Up the Night in October.
“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
new counseling space at 33 N. Market St., Lancaster, to augment the mission started at its main location at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. In addition to increasing the nonprofit’s coverage area, the downtown office will allow Samaritan Center to reach more people and provide more mental health services.
“We’re very aware of the gap between demand and the availability of counseling,” said Schedler. “We’re involved in that conversation. The good news is that we’ve seen a turn in people’s willingness to get help since COVID. Who doesn’t need to talk to somebody? Now we’re seeing the response to that. We saw a record demand over the last four years. Progress is being made, but it will take years to level back out.”
“It’s everyone in the community, from all walks of life,” said Schedler of Samaritan Center’s counseling clientele. “We’ve seen all ages reach out. It could be older adults; some of our counselors work with children and teens, families, couples, individuals. There really are no groups of folks not reaching out. We have in-person and virtual capabilities, so we can work with anyone in Pennsylvania. But the bulk of our clients seen in-house are Lancaster County residents.”
In 2023, Samaritan Center provided more than 14,000 counseling sessions. With the addition of North Market, Samaritan Center now has the capability to provide an additional 6,000 sessions.
“Samaritan Center does many things in the community, and counseling is just one of them,” said Schedler. “We just reached a point where we were out of space. We wanted to come up with a way to serve more people, and we’re excited about being in the city

for the first time. Our goal is to provide improved mental health to everyone. Samaritan Center’s mission is to be as accessible as possible to meet people’s needs for counseling services, and now we’re more accessible than ever.”
Samaritan Center was established in 1987 by a group from Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, interested in providing accredited, faith-based counseling. Over the last 37 years, the services Samaritan Center provides have changed to meet the evolving needs of the community.
“It was really a leap of faith to jump out and start a new counseling center,” said Schedler. “Over time, Samaritan Center has established itself by providing high-quality counseling services. Mostly through word of mouth, many lives have been changed. We’ve had a legacy of growing thoughtfully.”

Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., will host a community cookout on Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 7 p.m.
The gathering will take place in the pavilion next to the Tree House Playground by the back parking lot. The meal will
include hot dogs, chips, baked beans, vegetables, fruit, and dessert. Following the meal, attendees are welcome to play table games, and children may visit the Tree House Playground.
The event is free, and no reservations are needed. Donations will be accepted.
In the case of rain, the meal and program will be held in the Family Life Center; the entrance is at the back of the church building.

will help cover the extra expenses incurred by the Warwick band program’s activities.
“It’ll be used for the kids,” said Tenaglia. “It’ll go toward anything that enhances their experiences and opportunities with the band. The school provides so much, and everything we get takes it to the next level.”
Perhaps the highlight of the day will be the performances of four separate Warwick musical groups. Each of the four groups will perform two 30-minute sets that will be presented throughout the event.
“It’s a mix of kids,” said Tenaglia. “We have kids from all walks of life. We have kids involved with science, and we have athletes. Every group in our school is represented in band.”
More than 170 high school and middle school students are
involved with the Warwick band program.
“(Band) teaches teamwork,” said Tenaglia. “It teaches working toward an end goal. It teaches how to connect with others. Band teaches life lessons. It teaches high-level thinking and simple thinking. I think band is one of the best employment teachers out there.”
The Warwick Bands Food Truck Festival was started during the pandemic as a way to gather outside, raise funds and bring the Lititz community together. From those modest beginnings, the event has taken on a life of its own.
Lititz Historical Foundation will host its second annual community yard sale on Saturday, May 11, from 7 a.m. to noon. The event will be held in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind 137 E. Main St., Lititz. Community members are invited to participate.
Spaces are limited. Each space provides room for a 6-foot table, which vendors must bring. For details and reservations, contact info@ lititzhistoricalfoundation.com
or call 717-627-4636. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Lititz Historical Foundation. Free parking will be available in front of the historical foundation. There is also a free parking lot along Water Street, behind the Lititz Ambulance building Shoppers at the yard sale are also welcome to visit the Lititz Historical Foundation’s museum and gift shop. To learn more about the foundation, visit www. facebook.com/lititzmuseum.
“We weren’t quite sure how people would respond to it,” said Tenaglia. “Since the beginning, we’ve added trucks and extended the hours. It’s something beautiful and keeps getting better. We’re establishing it as an event that can compare with the other events in Lititz.”

A concert featuring Lancaster British Brass Band, conducted by Tina DiMeglio, will be held at St. John Neumann Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. This will be the 20th anniversary concert of the Lancaster British Brass Band and, to celebrate, the group will play some of its favorite pieces from the past, including “When the Saints Come Marching In” and “Georgia on My Mind.”
This will also be DiMeglio’s debut concert. She is currently the associate director of bands at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, and she conducts the USF symphonic band, in addition to teaching courses in conducting and music education. She has served as the music director of the Tampa Brass Band since 2021.
Lancaster British Brass Band follows the path first laid down in the mill and mining towns of mid-19th-century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed group of 28 players plus a conductor, the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners looking to raise morale. Later, the Salvation Army began capitalizing on the success of the bands by establishing brass bands as part of its outreach through music.
The unique sound quality of Lancaster British Brass Band is due to its being composed entirely of brass winds and percussion instruments.
A freewill offering will be received for the Further in Faith Capital Campaign and St. John Neumann School and Church.
