Book provides meaning, perspective to unimaginable
BY JEFF FALKife isn’t easy; it’s full of pitfalls and setbacks and heartache. But few things, if anything, can compare to the pain brought on by the loss of a child.
Since losing her 10-year-old daughter Libby two years ago, Brooke Carlock’s life has been consumed by grief. She has tried everything to cope with it - to somehow manage it - including authoring a book, “Grief Sucks (But Your Life Doesn’t Have To).”
“It was awful. It’s the most awful thing that can happen to anyone,” said Carlock, a resident
of Elizabethtown and an eighthgrade English/language arts teacher at Warwick Middle School. “It’s the call you never want to get. You know it could happen to you, but you never think it will. What I was looking for was someone to tell me what to do. But there are no instructions for grief.”
Carlock self-published her book at the beginning of April. The 133-page publication, her first, took four months to write.
For Carlock, a published freelance writer, the book evolved from a blog designed to handle her grief.
“I always wanted to write a
book, but never had anything I was super motivated to write about,” said Carlock. “It was much easier to write than I thought it would be. It was therapeutic. I just kind of put everything I was going through out there.
I’m not really anyone special. I’m just an average, everyday person putting it out there and being honest. I think that’s what people respond to.”
A fifth-grader at John R. Bonfield Elementary School in Lititz, Libby Shannon Miller was a joy for everyone to be around. But she was the apple of her mother’s eye.
The date was Feb. 9, 2022, and
Clair Clawser continues to lead his best life
BY JEFF FALKHow do you encapsulate the meaning of a man’s life in 500 words?
Clair Clawser has always led an active, colorful existence, filling the natural lulls with adventure, work and energy. It continues to be a life well-lived, a complete and rewarding life.
If indeed Clawser has any regrets at all, it’s that he’s beginning to slow down.
“Who wants to sit around and watch TV all day?” said Clawser. “I have an active mind and an active body. I’m always thinking about what’s next. I’m up for anything. I’m active because I’m able to do so much.”
The 78-year-old Clawser is a resident of Poplar Grove, a small
hamlet due west of Brickerville. After working the majority of his adult life as a printer and a materials handler, Clawser retired in 2016 and now devotes his energies to his many interests, pursuits and curiosities, as well as a part-time summer job at Dutch Wonderland as a ride operator.
Music will liven summer Sunday nights at Long’s Park
BY JEFF FALKLong’s Park has a history with music in Lancaster.
It’s a history of culture. It’s a history of diversity. It’s a history of symbiosis.
It’s a history that continues to evolve.
The 62nd season of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s (LPAF) Summer Music Series is upon us. More than bigger and
better, this Summer Music Series is as varied as ever.
“What we’re trying to do is bring diversity in genre and people from different areas of the world to Lancaster,” said Kristin Chronister, LPAF’s president-elect. “I think rather than top ourselves each year, we’re looking for high-end music we haven’t showcased in a while. We’re looking for different themes in order to bring different kinds of

“As a foundation, we believe that music is not only important to a community but vital,” said Chronister. “Art is meant to be consumed, whether you can afford it or not. The summer series can enable people to experience music without leaving their community and not spending any money. We regularly have people thanking us because that particular artist got them through a hard time. That’s important to us. We believe music is part of every thriving community.”
LPAF’s 2024 concert lineup kicked off on June 2. The Summer Music Series will feature soul/funk
group Snacktime at 7:30 p.m. on June 16; Carolyn Wonderland’s blues at 7:30 p.m. on June 23; the U.S. Army Band’s patriotic performance at 8 p.m. on June 30; the three-act “A Night in Nashville,” featuring Jeff Cohen, Brett Sheroky and The Close at 7 p.m. on July 7; American singer/ songwriter Marc Broussard at 7:30 p.m. on July 14; Canadian/Colombian world music artist Ramon Chicharron at 7:30 p.m. on July 21; the three-act Watkins Glen Tribute at 7 p.m. on July 28; gospel rockers The Sensational Barnes Brothers at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 4; the high-flying United States Air Force Band at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 11; and the all-female bluegrass band Della Mae at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 18.
Local artist PA Mambo Orquesta will perform a 45-minute opening set on June 16, as will locals Los Monstros on July 21.
“Each night brings a new flow,” said Chronister. “You shouldn’t expect to sit there and have a chill night. There’s excitement just to be there. It can be infectious, and the excitement permeates. You want to jump up. You want to move your body. The vibe is alive. It’s something that gets stronger as the evening goes on.”
On average, about 3,000 spectators make up the audiences for each performance.
“There is such a deep history with the Summer Music Series. It’s almost Lancaster lore,” said Chronister. “Not long after Long’s Park was founded, the amphitheater was built. The mission of the foundation became, ‘We’ve got this amazing venue, so let’s see what we can do to bring music into Lancaster.’ From an evolution experience, we’ve grown it and then maintained it. We’ve taken cues from the public about what they want to hear.”

The Arc plans resource fair event
The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will host a Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair and Summer Party on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brickerville Volunteer Fire Company, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz.
A recent study by The Arc of Pennsylvania on health care needs of individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities showed that health care providers are often unsure how to effectively work with and communicate with someone with a disability. Individuals with disabilities can also face challenges when talking to health care providers. The goal of the Disability Health and Wellness Resource Fair is to provide both parties the opportunity to interact and learn how to collaborate to improve care. Those who
attend may meet various local providers who can serve their health and wellness needs. Representatives from these providers will staff resource tables. The entities that will be present include ProCare @Home, Wellcare, Disability Empowerment Center, and Lighthouse Vocational Services. Those who attend may also participate in free health screenings, such as blood pressure checks by Bayada. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the event, and the Summer Party will include a child-friendly area with games, crafts, and face painting. Food trucks will be available in the parking lot throughout the event. Admission is free and open to the public rain or shine. Vendor spaces are available.
For more information,

contact The Arc at 717-3945251 or info@thearclancleb .org. This event is paid for in part by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
Begun by a group of parents seeking services for their children with disabilities, The Arc Lancaster Lebanon has served Lancaster County for more than 60 years and Lebanon County
since 2016. The mission of The Arc Lancaster Lebanon is to empower people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism and their families to lead full, satisfying, independent lives of their choice. To learn more, visit www .thearclancleb.org or call the aforementioned phone number.

Clair Clawser
Clawser never married.
“I’m retired, but I’m not,” said Clawser. “I guess I’ve aged, but I don’t worry about it. I don’t worry about getting old. I know it’s not going to go forever. I’ve cut back on some things, but I still do them. I’m going to continue to slow down. I have to have a little more rest than I used to. I can do everything until about 2 (p.m.). That’s when I need a rest, but then I can come back.”
Over the last six decades, Clawser has worn many hats, and they’ve all fit him pretty well.
In addition to his work as a materials handler and a printer, the Hershey High School graduate has been an entrepreneur and written and published numerous books and comic books. A regular participant in Pennsylvania’s Senior Games, Clawser has competed in the sports of distance running - about 1,323 total races - along with basketball, badminton, bowling, darts, miniature golf, horseshoes, pingpong and bocce,
all successfully, but without much fanfare.
“I’m very competitive to a point, but I’m just average at everything,” said Clawser. “I just try to do the best I can all the time. I have all these ideas pouring out of me, but I’ve never been able to hit it big time.”
He is also an avid traveler, an unofficial historian, an aspiring singer, a Renaissance man and a 14-year cancer survivor.
A character and personality guy, Clawser is a respectful man, a genuine man and a gentleman. He has faced his share of setbacks and challenges, but he has always chosen to focus on the positives, and his greatest life accomplishment might be his perseverance.
“I often look back,” said Clawser. “I have no regrets. There are no regrets, just enjoying what you did. I’m happy. I just love to do all this stuff.”
Or, as the late great baseball pitcher Satchel Paige once said, “Don’t look back. Something might be gaining on you.”

Libby’s older brother Max had just picked her up from dance class. At the precarious intersection of Lititz Road and Route 72, the car they were riding in was struck by a truck on Libby’s side.
She died at the scene.
“At her funeral, 10 kids spoke, and they all said she was their best friend,” said Carlock. “She was silly and funny, and she always had a smile for everyone. She was the kid who would sit with the kids who didn’t have any friends in the cafeteria. She was the best. She was a ray of sunshine.”
Since Libby’s passing, Carlock has started her own YouTube channel, gone through therapy, become a grief counselor and helped establish LiveLikeLibby, a foundation that provides financial aid for youths interested in dancing - the thing in this
world that Libby was most passionate about. Carlock has also gone back to work at Warwick Middle School, in search of her life’s new normal.
But before she did, Carlock had to face her grief and look it straight in the eye.
“How do you deal with it? Very simply, you don’t have a choice,” said Carlock. “It’s something you honestly never get over. I have a million memories of her every day. I know I have to keep moving forward. It’s never about getting over it. It’s a constant part of my life. My grief is my companion.”
To purchase a copy of the book, go to Amazon and search for “Grief Sucks (But Your Life Doesn’t Have To).”
