French toast fuels aviation curiosity
BY JEFF FALKSure, it’s hearty. Sure, it’s delicious. Sure, it’s a great way to start a day.
But for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), it’s a vehicle, a means to an end, a propellor to take flight.
EAA Chapter 540, which is hangared at Smoketown Airport, is hosting another one of its popular breakfasts. Not only are the breakfasts fundraisers, but they’re also the association’s only money makers, which make
them vitally important to the organization’s cause.
“We want people to come join us for breakfast,” said Doug McGinnis, president of EAA Chapter 540. “The breakfast is primarily a fundraiser, but it could also be seen as a way to get the community aware of our activities. We want people to be aware of who we are. A lot of people are interested in aviation but aren’t aware of our chapter. We also engage our youth to become part of our program.”
BY JEFF FALKJoy, sorrow, excitement, uncertainty, pride. Nearly 300 Warwick High School students and those present to support them may have experienced these emotions and more on June 7 when the school held its 68th commencement.
The two-hour event began at 6:30 p.m. at Calvary Church.
“I think commencement is a day that’s important for most of our kids,” said Warwick High School principal Karen Szobocsan. “Graduation is a celebration, a celebration of all the things they’ve done to get there. They’ve done a lot of important things to get to this point, and hard work is the most important thing.”
“What (the administration and faculty are) trying to do is highlight graduation in the lens of the student’s view,” continued Szobocsan, “and make sure it’s about their memories.”
The evening of graduation began
with 45 minutes of mingling, photo taking and socializing. With the high school band playing, the members of the Class of 2024 processed in front of their guests to their seats near the stage.
Following the playing of the national anthem and welcoming

remarks from Szobocsan, attendees heard addresses titled “The Unexpected Opportunity” from senior Ava Fackler and “The Muppet Movie” from senior Maggie Turner.
“I would assume you’re expecting me to talk about the journey we have taken together to get to this point and reflect on the past,” said Fackler. “But I believe our future is more important, so I choose to look ahead. We all have our personal
aspirations of what we would like to achieve to fulfill our passions and make us happy. Some of you know exactly your plan to achieve that dream; others may not have such a clear-cut path.”
“As you move into the world beyond Lititz, listen to your peers; they all have something to contribute,” said Turner. “Even if you don’t get along perfectly, you may still benefit from another person’s viewpoints and ideas. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Surround yourself with people who make your life infinitely better. Surround yourself with people who bring out the absolute best in you and bring new thoughts and new perspectives.”
At the ceremony, the school also recognized the top 10% of the class, the senior members of the National Honor Society, seniors committed to the military, district staff members and employees, valedictorian Aiden Troop and salutatorian Yeana Kim.

What do you get when you combine old and unique? An antiqueBY JEFF FALK
They say they don’t make things like they used to. They also say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It’s fitting that the oldest fundraiser held by the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) is an antiques show. The
long it’s been around, that can tell you it’s still a money maker for us,” said LHF president Cory Van Brookhoven.
“It’s a lot of work and a lot of upfront costs for us, and it takes a lot of time to operate the show. For us, it’s still worth it. It’s still profitable. It’s our largest fundraiser of
Historical foundation plans concert
The Lititz Historical Foundation will host its first concert of 2024 on Sunday, June 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the foundation’s Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens are located behind 145 E. Main St., Lititz.
Temple Avenue is a Lancaster-based jazz ensemble that was formed a dozen years ago by pianist Colin Mekeel, who was then a junior in high school, and his friends enrolled in Temple University’s jazz program. Today the group plays concerts, dances, receptions, church services, and other events in southcentral Pennsylvania. The musicians are now in their 20s and
30s, and many of them are Temple University graduates.
Refreshments will be available for a nominal fee. Attendees may bring chairs and blankets. Free parking is available nearby.
The concert is available by donation, and proceeds will help to preserve the gardens and 18th-century structures. To donate online, visit https:// tinyurl.com/LHFTempleAvenue Concert. For more information, email info@lititzhistorical foundation.com.
This event is sponsored by Tiger’s Eye of Lititz.

The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, June 25, at 7 p.m. at VFW Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia.
Rotary Club posts Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K
The Rotary Club of Lancaster will hold its seventh annual Wheels & Wings Festival and 5K on Saturday, June 22, rain or shine at the Lancaster Airport, located on Airport Road in Lititz. The event is the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s main annual fundraiser, and proceeds will benefit the Summer Youth Experience grants.
Funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, Wheels & Wings supports nonprofits that serve more than 2,600 city youths ages 5 to 16. The four programs that will benefit this year are Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN) music programs, Advantage Lancaster mentoring programs, Brightside Opportunity STEM programs, and The Mix Summer STEM and Ecology Camp. Representatives for each of these programs will be on-site at Wheels & Wings and will select a People’s Choice award winner in the car show.
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded, as well as numerous door prizes.
Due to runway construction, there will not be a fly-in this year, but there will still be helicopter rides and, new to the festival, tethered hot air balloon rides.
Abella Aviation will provide the helicopter rides, and Susquehanna Valley Balloon Company will provide the hot air balloon rides; these activities will have a fee. All rides will be purchased day-of and are subject to the weather.
A special feature will be a Huey helicopter from the Vietnam War, presented by and for veterans of that conflict. Liberty Warbirds will provide a free static display of a Huey 823.
The Wheels & Wings Festival will also feature food trucks, Big Dog Craft Brewing, music by Baker Event Company, and giveaway drawings.
The speaker will be Sami Steigmann, who is a Holocaust survivor, an educator, and a motivational speaker. When he was a toddler, he was subjected to Nazi medical experimentation in a Ukrainian labor camp while his parents were put to work, and Steigmann would not have survived if it were not for a German woman. Steigmann seeks to tell his story to as many people as possible.
The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-319-3430.
The event will begin with the 5K race, sponsored by Penn State Health, at 7:30 a.m. rain or shine. The lightly traveled race route is entirely on the roads of the 5K host sponsor, Brethren Village. Medals will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in six age categories with registered participants receiving a race T-shirt.
A Pre-Show Coffee Cruise will depart at 7:30 a.m., offering a selfguided cruise designed by Michael Rowen of Michael’s Motor Cars.
The “everything on wheels” car show, open to cars, motorcycles, and trucks, and sponsored by Boyd Wilson, will be held from
For kids, there will be an inflatable bounce house and slide, as well as a Touch-a-Truck. Children may sit in and play on Skippy, the airport’s static plane.
The event is free, and no registration is required for spectators. There is a fee for on-site parking.
To register for the 5K, car show, or cruise, search for “Rotary Club of Lancaster Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K” at www .eventbrite.com.

EAA Chapter 540’s Amish-style French toast all-you-can-eat breakfast will be served on Saturday, June 22, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Smoketown Airport, 311 Airport Drive, Smoketown. Including the scrumptious headliner, the breakfast will also feature pancakes, eggs, sausage, potatoes, orange juice and coffee.
“We don’t have a huge budget,” said McGinnis. “We probably need $3,000 or $4,000 a year to stay afloat. All the funds are used for chapter operations, things like hangar rental, buying parts for the restoration project, our scholarship work. We’d like to get into additional projects.”
Typically, 150 to 200 people show up for the breakfasts, a total which could realize about $1,800 for EAA Chapter 540.
“Our mission is for like-minded people to learn about aviation, how to build airplanes and aviation safety,” said McGinnis, who’s been a licensed pilot for two years. “It’s to bring aviation enthusiasts together and to enjoy aviation activities. You don’t have to be a pilot to join, but we do have pilots
in the organization.”
Based in Oshkosh, Wis., EAA is a national organization whose mission is to promote aviation, airplanes and everything flight related. The Smoketown chapter consists of 50 members.
“We come from all walks of life, doctors, blue-collar workers, retired people, young people,” said McGinnis. “The common thread is a passion for aviation. It’s a pretty broad cross-section brought together by our interest and a desire to learn. We want to learn from what other people have done. We want to be a community.”
In addition to its fundraising efforts and scholarship work, EAA sponsors a Young Eagles program designed to get youths interested in aviation. It is also currently working on the complete restoration of a 1947 Aeronca Chief four-seater plane.
“Building an airplane is a massive undertaking,” said McGinnis. “It was donated by a member, and we disassembled it to the bare bones. We’re now putting it back together. We’ve been working on

it for about a year and a half, and we probably have another year to complete it.”
The Smoketown chapter of EAA has been in existence for about 10 years now.
“When a plane is taking off down the runway, we all go look at it,” said McGinnis of the EAA membership. “There’s something about an airplane taking flight and leaving the ground. What you see when you’re flying is just
amazing. You’re separated from the ground.”

Not Walk Alone” by the senior members of the concert choir preceded remarks from school board president Emily Zimmerman and outgoing superintendent April Hershey.
Hershey, Szobocsan and the class officers then granted diplomas to each member of the Class of 2024. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a voiceover video recording of senior memories by class president Payton Gooding and the high school band’s rendition of the Warwick alma mater.
“Before the procession, the mood is light-hearted,” said Szobocsan. “When we line up and I say,
‘Enjoy this,’ I think some of the reality sets in. (The students) are going to have a new life. I think that’s when the nervousness sets in, the unknown. I think for some of them for the first time, gratefulness sets in. I get more hugs that day than any other day of the year.”
“I think for the staff, pride is the number one feeling for sure,” she added. “As each kid’s name is read, it evokes memories of the personal relationships that have been built over the last four years.”
It’s those relationships, combined with the hard work, that have prepared members of Warwick’s Class of 2024 for anything
that the real world throws at them.
“I’m positive they’re going to do positive things,” Szobocsan said, adding, “I want them to realize how bright their futures are.” scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Antiques show
to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz. An admission fee will be charged at the door.
Refreshments can be purchased from a food truck that will be on-site.
“For enthusiasts, it’s a big deal, and for us, it’s a big deal,” said Van Brookhoven. “Many shows have stopped or closed, but ours has kept going and been successful year after year.”
Among the available treasures that will be bought and sold are doll items, stoneware, holiday items, Pennsylvania folk art, farm items, kitchen goods, textiles, early lighting, transferware, country wares and dry goods. Billed as an oldtime country show, the antiques show features some items that date back to the 1700s and 1800s.
“Antiques can be anything. It’s a very broad interpretation,” said Van Brookhoven. “These aren’t yard sale items. These are really high-quality, high-endonly antiques.”
“Sometimes, if you buy an antique set of chairs, it might be around another hundred years,” Van Brookhoven continued. “You could buy a new set and
that doesn’t last as long. Things that are highly collectible had value throughout the decades. Over the last about 18 years, the antiques market has been on a downturn, but with everything there are ebbs and flows.”
More than 50 dealers from up and down the East Coast are expected to display their wares at LHF’s antiques show. In addition, hundreds of collectors are expected to attend over the show’s two days.
“It has a certain reputation, and I think that speaks to the quality of the show,” said Van Brookhoven. “People come to expect quality merchandise.”
LHF established its antiques show in 1962. The foundation also conducts tours, concerts and presentations as ways to raise funds for promoting and exploring Lititz’s local history.
“(The antiques show has) always been our biggest fundraiser,” said Van Brookhoven. “It goes with what we do. As a nonprofit, you could argue everything we do is a fundraiser. A large part of my time is spent fundraising.”
