Swim, bike, run: Lititz to put triathletes to the test

There are so many cool events staged in downtown Lititz that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of them all.

But most don’t turn the area into a competitive course. Most don’t gauge the mettle of highly motivated athletes. Most don’t promote fitness in such an overt way.

The Lititz recCenter Triathlon is similar to other downtown Lititz events and unique at the same time.

“It’s just for the area,” said Simon Ababou, the Lititz recCenter’s fitness director and the organizer of the triathlon. “It’s good for the businesses. It’s good for the coolest town in America. It helps keep people active. We have people coming here from different areas, spending the weekend and visiting the town. It’s a nice place to visit.”

The 10th edition of the annual Lititz recCenter Triathlon will be presented on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 301 Maple St., Lititz. The triathlon will begin around 7:45 a.m. and registrations will be accepted in person that day until before the start of the event or in advance by going to www .lititzrec.com/special-events/ annual-triathlon.

Prizes and medals will be awarded for men and women, as individuals and as teams, in more than five age categories at the end of the competition. Goodie bags will be handed out to the competitors.

Competitors can find ample parking at Warwick High School and Warwick Middle School.

“It’s a great atmosphere,” said Ababou. “Sports bring people together. Everyone talks to everyone. I like it as a community event. Everyone comes together that day because it’s a big event.”

Competitors will start the triathlon by swimming 300 meters in the Lititz Springs Pool. From there, the athletes will jump on their bikes and ride 15.8 miles through scenic Penn Township to Manheim and back.

The final leg of the triathlon will

consist of a 3.1-mile run through town and the shady developments that surround it. Both the biking and running courses are relatively flat and fast.

“The (competitors) who do well are the ones who are composed and prepared,” said Ababou. “The big thing is the transition between events. You could have cramps, so you have to drink a lot of water. If an athlete is not prepared, they could feel fatigue in the run. You have to have a mental check when

Beneath the exterior of a bailiff beats the heart of a writer

A servant of the court, a bailiff is tasked with escorting individuals, aiding in the overseeing of procedures and generally providing support during legal proceedings.

Gordie Jones enjoys his work; he’s learned some things about the legal system, and he finds his part-time job interesting. But for Jones, perhaps the best thing about being a bailiff is that it has almost nothing to do with writing. Previously a sportswriter for over 30 years, Jones has found that his new job provides a change of pace.

“I don’t know how I’d describe (being a bailiff),” said Jones, a resident of Lititz. “I don’t know if I’d go as far as to call it a second act. I still do some writing and

Enthusiasm for fossils, minerals to be displayed at extravaganza

Chris Haefner understands Mother Earth. He appreciates the precious gems hidden just beneath her surface. And he wants to pass on his acquired expertise to others.

It’s that spirit that led Chris and his wife, Catherine, to found the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) and in turn LCFMC’s annual Christmas in July

Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza.

“(Fossils and minerals) represent our world and life on Earth from when it began to now,” said Chris. “People are fascinated with precious gems because they’re beautiful and valuable. Generally, people know about (fossils and minerals); our culture is everywhere. Some people like it because it’s grassroots. I think it’s more relevant now than it ever was.”

you start the run, and you want to move well when you’re competing. At the end, everybody is tired, the winner and the last one.”

Almost 300 athletes from Lancaster, York, Harrisburg, Reading, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York are expected to compete. Organizers of the Lititz recCenter Triathlon are hoping to raise $27,000 for youth programs, summer camps and other fitness activities.

About 14 local businesses, organizations and individuals are sponsoring the event.

“We rely on this event to keep things going,” said Ababou. “Fitness is fun. We need to get together. It’s great to stay healthy. It’s great to keep moving and feel good about yourself.”

One of only a handful of triathlons staged in Lancaster County annually, the Lititz recCenter Triathlon takes a group of more than 40 staff members and volunteers to pull off. Since its inception, participation in the triathlon has steadily grown from its original number of 119 competitors.

An athlete leans into a turn on the bike course during last year’s Lititz recCenter Triathlon.

“It’s a team effort between the rec center staff and the community,” said Ababou. “It’s something different. The triathlon is very well organized and has great participation. We invest in it. We hear comments from the participants each year.”

An Outdoor Historical and Inspirational Service will take place at the 1855 Alleghany Mennonite Meetinghouse, 39 Horning Road, Mohnton, near Alleghenyville, on Sunday, July 21, at 6 p.m. Paul Martin from Elmira, Ontario, Canada, will speak on “From Switzerland to Alleghany and Beyond.” Special attention will be given to the Bauman/Bowman families.

Returning attendees may note this year’s earlier start time. Attendees should bring a lawn chair and a “Church and Sunday School Hymnal” if they have one.

Cadet program offers structured STEM activities for youths

When it comes to service organizations, young people have a variety of groups to choose from. Popular youth service organizations include the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts, but a lesser-known alternative is the Civil Air Patrol’s cadet program. While the cadet program shares several values and teaches similar lessons as Scouting troops, there are many things that set it apart - which is why Sara Dalrymple of Kirkwood decided to join her local squadron.

Sara, a rising freshman at Solanco High School, joined the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 in October 2023. Sara’s parents, Windsor and Berna Dalrymple, discovered the program while searching for enrichment opportunities for Sara and her younger sister, Leyla. Windsor and Berna were homeschooling both children, and they frequently take Sara and Leyla

on trips to visit museums and participate in educational activities to make sure the school day never gets boring. “Education is something that’s important to all of us,” Windsor said. “We try to make it a fun pastime, not just sitting at a desk.”

After contacting Civil Air Patrol, Windsor and Berna periodically received learning kits that primarily focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics lessons. Windsor, who works as a paramedic, said he was familiar with Civil Air Patrol due to its involvement in search and rescue efforts, but he and Berna were impressed with the depth and quality of the material. The Dalrymple family found the nearest squadron was located in Lititz, and after making a trip to check it out, Sara said she was immediately intrigued. “I thought it was a very interesting program, and I thought it was cool how they organized it,” Sara added.

Since October, Sara has regularly attended weekly meetings that include a variety of lessons on safety, leadership and aerospace. The last meeting of every month incorporates a promotion night, where cadets can receive a new rank based on the activities and courses they have completed. As an auxiliary of the Air Force, the program also incorporates elements of military courtesy such as drill tests and uniform

inspections, which can also help a cadet earn a new rank. Sara was named Cadet of the Month on June 11 for attending every meeting in May, completing eServices training and passing online examinations.

“I already had an idea in mind for what career I might pursue, but this has helped me grow more,” Sara said. “I’m interested in studying science, but there are multiple pathways.” Former cadets who decide to join the Air

Force have opportunities to jump rank and get a head-start at the Air Force Academy.

“It’s worthwhile for parents to know there’s another group available,” Windsor said. “(Civil Air Patrol) has almost every form of science, and they’re interested in seeing kids become the best they can be.”

“When We Climb Trees” explores allure of gaming and screentime

This year’s Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza will be conducted in three rooms at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 28. Attendees will be afforded an opportunity to peruse and purchase up to 10,000 unique fossils, minerals, crystals and jewelry from 40 licensed dealers.

world’s first reptile. In addition, the show will include a light-refracturing demonstration by a scientist and a presentation by a tinsmith.

An admission fee will be charged, and the Paradise Lions Club will make refreshments available.

Catch the world premiere of a youth musical, “When We Climb Trees,” at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The show will be performed at 2 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.

“When We Climb Trees” tells the story of a tightknit group of friends who struggle with the conflict between sharing real-life adventures and succumbing to the draw of gaming devices and screentime.

“This show is really about finding balance between time to play, pretend, be a kid and be with friends with the ever-present allure of screentime and gaming,” said Steven Courtney, who wrote the show. “I find it interesting

“It’s families with kids who are interested in paleontology and geology,” said Chris of the expected visitors that day. “It’s an enthusiastic crowd of people who come, and then you have the camaraderie. It’s a very lively atmosphere. People anticipate it every year. This is our forte; this is what we do. There’s a whole stream of history people don’t know because it’s not taught in schools.”

The fossil and mineral extravaganza will also feature a mine tour where kids bearing flashlights can find mineral samples. Youngsters may also appreciate interactive adventures in a geology learning center. The activities are designed for fun, but it should be noted that learning could occur.

Also on display at the show will be a rare fossil specimen of Hylonomus Iyelli, believed to be the

Nearly 1,000 visitors are expected to attend the extravaganza over its two days. Proceeds from the event will go toward LCFMC’s operating expenses and activities. After first being introduced at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville, LCFMC’s Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza moved to Farm and Home Center four years ago.

“(LCFMC is) a very noble thing to be involved in,” said Chris. “When you’re part of a club, new ideas will spring from it. We get to meet other clubs and other club’s people. If you like minerals and fossils, there’s nothing like it. It’s not like going to a museum and looking at what someone else found. You found it.”

Chris and Catherine Haefner founded LCFMC in 2013, and the club initially involved 12 members. Today, LCFMC’s membership numbers 130 fossil and mineral aficionados.

LCFMC meets on the last Thursday of every month at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville.

Gordie Jones

that speaks to what I like to do. (Being a bailiff is) just something that interests me. I learn something new every day. It’s a complete departure from what I’ve done for so long. It’s certainly a new challenge.”

Jones works at the Lancaster County Courthouse, 50 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Officially, he is assigned to David Ashworth, a judge of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas, but his bailiff duties take him to multiple courtrooms.

“I saw an ad for it, it sounded like something I could do, and it sounded interesting,” said Jones. “It’s intriguing because you get to see a side of the law you never saw before. Some days you see things that are sad and disturbing, but other days you see things that are uplifting. There’s fairness. There’s compassion.”

“I worked nights forever and this is during the day,” he added. “I never had to wear a tie before, so this is something different.”

A popular and respected Lancaster County sportswriter for 22 years, from 1981 to 2003, Jones left the locale for a writing position in Allentown that allowed him to cover the Philadelphia Eagles and express himself through columns and feature articles. Then, over the next 10 years, he freelanced for more than 30 media outlets.

“I’m always grateful to hear feedback like that,” said Jones of the respect he is afforded

in the regional sportswriting community. “I know I’m not conquering cancer, but every time I sit down to write, I do the best I can. If people don’t like it, well, I’ll try to do better tomorrow.”

Jones, who graduated from Milton Hershey School and Gettysburg College, still writes on his own time at his own pace, about four times a week for a handful of local publications and online outlets. When he’s not enjoying travel with his wife, Jones also produces a podcast with fellow veteran sportswriter Mike Gross titled “After the Buzzer.”

“I still like to keep my hands in it,” said Jones of his writing. “I still like to pursue stories. It’s nice to have the time to sink your teeth into subjects. It still scratches an itch. It’s right about where I need to be.”

That’s what semi-retirement looks like for Gordie Jones. At 66, he continues to evolve as a person, yet not quite ready for the next professional step - retirement.

“I think about what’s left in the tank,” said Jones. “You’d like to think you can do it (write) as long as your health allows. I know I can still do it. I enjoy doing it. I always have, and hopefully always will. I always think about purpose and having a good reason to get out of bed in the morning, whether it’s writing or ‘bailiff-ing.’ I just sort of take it as it comes. It’s a day-byday proposition.”

to observe the youthful cast as they ‘pretend’ to bring this ‘play’ to life through their hard work yet willing spirits. Collectively, there are so many elements of teamwork, collaboration and planning to produce this playful, upbeat show with a rather serious undertone. More and more studies are showing the addictive power of devices.”

The cast of “When We Climb Trees” is primarily youths ages 10 to 16 from Lancaster and York counties.

Courtney, who is the producer, songwriter and playwright of the show through Sun Hill Productions, worked in partnership with Kami Deppen of Big Dream Players, who is directing the show and served as costumer and set designer. The pair held auditions earlier this year for local youths to record the musical’s soundtrack.

“The recording of the soundtrack demo was super fun, and it went as good as we could have hoped,” Courtney recalled. “We used the demo versions of the songs to share with the cast. After the cast selection process, we provided the soundtrack for actors to rehearse with prior to our official rehearsals. The instrumental parts of the soundtrack will be used in the live show, and the cast will sing live vocals for the performance.”

This is the first youth musical Courtney, a singer-songwriter, has written, but he knows it won’t be his last.

“I am presently developing a new musical themed around my song ‘Steven the Pirate,’” he shared. “I’m having a blast exploring the options for the storyline. There are a few other ideas in the vault as well. I do think I’ll stay in the ‘youth musical’ lane for moving forward.”

He hopes audiences will enjoy “When We Climb Trees,” noting that it will be performed in Landis Hall, a state-of-the-art production theater at the Junction Center.

“This show is all-ages friendly and will run around 65 minutes,” he said. “Bring the whole family.”

Tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased in advance at www .thejunctioncenter.com/ when-we-climb-trees.

HARTZ Physical Therapy presents donation

Bring in this advertisement for $2 OFF a Half Bushel of Peaches July 20Mid September

1375 Hossler Road Manheim, PA 17545

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT) recently presented a check for $10,000 to Off the Streets, an all-volunteer organization that has assisted more than 5,070 men, women and children since 2013 to access permanent housing. The money was the result of HARTZ PT’s third annual Spring Swing Golf Tournament, which was held on May 10 at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

The Spring Swing Golf Tournament was organized by HARTZ PT therapists and avid golfers Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro.

PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. To date the company has raised more than $350,000 by planning various charitable events, including an April food drive called Feed the Need that benefited the Arch Street Center, and the annual Fall Blast 5K Run/ Walk.

Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization founded in 2020, HARTZ

Gigi’s Playhouse, Bench Mark Program, A Week Away, Aaron’s Acres, Lancaster Science Factory and Hospice of Lancaster are a few of the local charities that have benefited from HARTZ PT’s charitable programs.
