For Bella Cesarini,
all the world’s a stage

Bella Cesarini isn’t really any different than most young people in that she is headed down a path toward her future. While she’s not quite sure exactly where that path will take her, Cesarini is fairly certain the destination will involve entertainment, theater or acting.
But for Cesarini, it’s not all about the destination, simply because she’s having so much fun getting there.
“It’s hard to say what the future is going to look like,” said Cesarini, who graduated from Warwick High School in June. “To be completely honest, I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I feel like (entertainment is) such a core part of me. It’s hard to separate myself from being part
of the theater. If acting is in the cards, that’s fine. Over the next four years, I want to try a lot of things.”
Cesarini, who’s been around theater most of her natural life, including involvement with drama at Warwick, recently concluded a unique nine-month internship at the historic Fulton Theatre. This fall, she’s headed to Belmont University in Nashville to continue and refine her pursuits.
“I knew I wanted to do something in the theater and entertainment industry, so I thought I’d start in my senior year (of high school),” said Cesarini of the internship. “Getting to know people in the entertainment industry was really interesting to me. It helped me figure out what I did and didn’t like. We shadowed
a lot of people, even when they were doing shows.”
“Every day, I was just so happy to be there,” she continued. “It’s cool to be in such a historic building where so many performers have acted. I could just sit there, taking in the aura of the place. You know so many cool things happened there.”
In addition to the hands-on experience that the internship provided, Cesarini also had multiple minor roles in the Fulton Theatre’s recent presentation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” including one as an Oompa Loompa. Although the roles did not involve speaking or lines, Cesarini was, at times, required to sing and dance.

North Star Initiative (NSI) is doubling down on its mission. The local nonprofit is adding to its resources and increasing its reach in the fight against human trafficking.
Recently, NSI absorbed Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved (F.R.E.E.), a
Berks County-based nonprofit with similar goals, methods and beliefs, into its operations. It’s a move that will allow NSI to impact more survivors and achieve an even greater good.
“I’ve had a desire for collaboration,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s executive director. “There’s too much work that needs to be done, and you can’t do it alone.

One of the five human senses, hearing is something that can be easily taken for granted. But for those who can’t hear, there’s an element of appreciation that inspires creativity, ingenuity and a manifestation of the human spirit.
Through a wealth of services and resources, the Lancaster Center of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, which is a subsidiary
of and overseen by Keystone Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Reading, helps individuals with hearing loss learn to listen, communicate better and generally lead fuller lives.
LCDHH client services manager and language specialist Karen Pfortsch, who has been deaf since birth, was interviewed for this article with the help of sign language interpreter Kandy Reyes, KDHHS’ president.
“Deaf individuals are happy being deaf,” said Pfortsch. “We can do everything except hear.

At LCDHH, individuals with hearing loss and their family members are directly and indirectly connected with services like sign language interpreters, sign language education, hearing aids, speech therapy, amplifiers, closed caption video phones, doorbell signalers, smoke and fire alarms, workshops, community activities and social events.
People who are deaf or hard of hearing also employ lip reading, facial expressions and body language as ways to receive communications, but they are more informal and learned skills that are often less accurate than sign language.
“The goal is barrier-free services and community access,” said Pfortsch. “Our goal is to empower our clients with whatever services are needed. It’s like a onestop shop. When a person comes in here, they need to discuss their needs with us. Some might be looking for a job, and we’ll connect them with employment agencies. Some people might be struggling with reading. Some people have limited language skills. Some might need to know how to get their pensions. We’ll get them connected to the right people. There are a variety of things we’ll do to get them help, and sometimes we do advocacy.”
LCDHH serves about 300 clients on a regular basis. According to numbers from a recent census, approximately 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.
“We are only scratching the surface,” said Pfortsch. “Some people have a mindset about deaf people from what they’ve seen on TV. They label all deaf people as ignorant. We have to work to prove ourselves because it’s considered a disability. But deaf people don’t think they’re disabled.”
KDHHS employs a total of 10 individuals, two of whom work out of the LCDHH office. LCDHH is a nonprofit that receives funding from donations, grants and fees from its interpreter services.
“We are known in the
deaf and hard of hearing community,” said Pfortsch.
“Some organizations know us, and they connect their clients with us. They’ll work with us and collaborate with us. But some people don’t know the services are available. We’re here. People are welcome to call us.”

PPL Foundation to offer scholarships
To support future leaders in the clean energy transition, PPL Foundation has partnered with a network of schools to provide scholarships to students who are passionate about clean energy, sustainability, decarbonization and grid reliability.
Beginning in 2024, the Brighter Futures scholarship program will award $150,000 annually to students pursuing degrees or technical certification in fields that support the clean energy transition.
To run the scholarship program, the PPL Foundation has partnered with nine schools: Cedar Crest College, Kentucky State University, New England Institute of Technology, Northampton Community College, Penn State Harrisburg, Smith College,Tennessee State University, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and University of Rhode Island.

While acting does require a certain degree of talent, there’s a big part of the craft that’s a refined skill.
To be eligible, students must be enrolled in one of the aforementioned institutions, demonstrate financial need, be in good academic standing and demonstrate a passion for or interest in clean energy, sustainability, decarbonization and grid reliability. “A lot of it is not caring about what people are thinking of you in the moment,” said Cesarini. “You’ve got to be yourself and the character, but it’s different for everyone. At rehearsals, it’ll take me a few times to figure out how I want to be doing a scene or a number. Everyone has their own path to getting there.”
If acting isn’t part of Cesarini’s future, directing, costume dressing or even entertainment
reporting might be. “For me, it all probably started out as a hobby,” said Cesarini of her involvement in entertainment. “But the more I delved into it, now I can’t imagine not doing something, whether it’s front of or behind the stage. I hope it’s a career goal. I hope I can keep pursuing it.”

The race is organized through the HARTZ Charitable Organization. The annual event has raised more than $350,000 for charities throughout Lancaster County.

After about a year of negotiations and red tape, NSI officially absorbed F.R.E.E. on July 1. In the summer of 2023, officials of F.R.E.E. approached NSI about a possible merger, and around the beginning of this year a formal agreement was reached.
“In terms of operations, it’s a merger. The legal term is acquisition,” said Clark. “I’m excited because this means we’re going to be serving more survivors more quickly. It makes the whole organization stronger. This work is complex and complicated. Any resources we have at our disposal are meant for the good of the movement. We want to make the entire movement more effective.”
NSI retained all 11 of F.R.E.E.’s former employees, a move that increased NSI’s staff to 30 members. In addition to its continuation of F.R.E.E.’s services in Berks County, NSI has now established a physical presence in Reading, partly through the continued operation of F.R.E.E.’s Refuge Home, a residential facility for human trafficking survivors focused on trauma healing, similar to NSI’s The Harbor in Lititz.
NSI now has the capability to house and care for a total of 14 human trafficking survivors at any one time, up to
“Over the next 90 days we will be very focused on training staff and analyzing policies so both teams can be effective,” said Clark. “We’re not going to rush things, and if we need to take our time, we will. One of the next key pieces will be to invite the community to see what we’ve accomplished so far. We want better outcomes for survivors. It’s what everyone wants. That’s the whole point.”
NSI is one of at least four Lancaster County organizations currently battling human trafficking. Last year, NSI conducted more than 75 presentations to raise awareness about human trafficking in the community, and since its founding in 2010, the Lititz nonprofit has provided care for more than 80 survivors.
“I’d say this is unexpected, but desirable and not unimaginable,” said Clark of the F.R.E.E. merger. “The areas that nonprofits struggle in are executive leadership, developing boards and securing volunteers. We have so many resources and such a competent staff that organizations are trying to replicate it.”
