Caring for a community resource

It’s an incredible events venue.

It’s a recreational respite. It’s a community resource. It’s a historic place.

But Lititz Springs Park is facing maintenance and infrastructure difficulties related to usage, parking issues and its overall age.

Members of the Lititz Springs Park board, which manages the downtown public grounds, are considering measures to ease the stress on the park, including limiting the number of events and how and where they can be staged.

“The problem the park is having now is there’s more and more

people coming,” said Rich Motz, who’s in his first year as the Lititz Springs Park board president.

“People want to find a good park.”

“We’re actually trying to reduce (the number of events) because the events have gotten bigger and out of control,” continued Motz.

“Some of the events have gotten so large. The traffic, the parking, the visitors, the trash all are getting very expensive to manage.

We’re kind of at the height (of the number of events), but we’re looking to reduce. It’s so many people, and they have no place to park. Parking is a serious problem in Lititz.”

Located at 18 N. Broad St., Lititz, Lititz Springs is a

well-known and popular park in Lancaster County. Lititz Springs Park hosts seven major events - for a number of local service organizations and civic groupsand dozens of smaller gatherings annually.

Hundreds of thousands of people, both locals and visitors from out of town, frequent the park throughout the year.

Longer than it is wide, Lititz Springs Park is more than 3 acres of pavilions, mature trees, ducks, quiet and serenity that have stood the test of time and stayed true to the park’s original, intended purpose. In many ways, the town has grown up around the park and the natural springs

Humans sometimes make mistakes. Sometimes our health fails. Accidents happen.

It’s comforting to know that in our greatest times of need, the good men and women of organizations like the Warwick Community Ambulance Association (WCAA) have our backs.

The WCAA is a highly functioning, complex organization. But on its most basic level, it’s simply people helping people - 24/7/365.

“It’s a team; that’s what this is,” said Rob Walker, who’s about a year into his stint as the WCAA’s chief of operations.

“We work so closely to provide care. Everybody here does amazing things every day. We kind of work in the shadows until you call 911. When the call is dispatched, we’re ready to go. Often what we do is not lifesaving; it’s

compassionate care for the community.”

Stationed at 151 North Lane, Lititz, the WCAA offers first-response, emergency medical services that cover Lititz Borough, Warwick Township, Elizabeth Township,

Compass Mark wants to be an ideological lightning rod and a guiding light in the community. The nonprofit approaches its mission through three guiding principles - “follow the science,”

“an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “the sooner the better.”

The ultimate goal is to manage and curb addiction or control

the behavioral part of it that can be controlled.

“Compass Mark can help you get to where you want to go in life; we can keep you on the right path,” said Teri Miller-Landon, Compass Mark’s director of programs. “There’s so much science out there on what leads kids to addiction. We’re not preaching abstinence. We’re trying to delay use as much as possible. We’re teaching them to make other

Cloister plans ice cream social

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its summer ice cream social. This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes, scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen, Akron Mayor John McBeth, Ephrata Police Chief Chris McKim, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream.

Tickets include ice cream, brownie sundaes, and admission to the property. The ticket fee is discounted for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, and children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased in the Visitor Center on the day of the event.

Guides in historical costumes will be stationed in the buildings to greet visitors and interpret the history of the 18th-century structures. The All Weather Band will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. under the tent

by the Visitor Center. The band plays American music, including blues, roots, country, and more. Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds of the Cloister, pet therapy dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), and watch demonstrations by Woven Together and Friends. Information about the project to rebuild the amphitheater on the grounds will be available, and visitors may watch the video narrated by movie, TV, and Broadway star and 2024 Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff. Visitors will also be able to try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.

The early community of Ephrata was known for its charity, an outreach that continues today, nearly 300 years after the founding of the town. Event attendees may learn more about charity in Ephrata today and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.

The museum store, featuring candles, cards, books of historical interest, and the works of local craftspeople, will be open for browsing and purchases at special discounts. Featured items will include Cloister-branded products, such as T-shirts, hats, and tote bags.

Proceeds from the event will support educational programming at Historic Ephrata Cloister, including the Student Historians program and Community Days for local elementary students. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information and updates, visit www.ephrata cloister.org or call the Visitor Center at 717-733-6600.

Penn Township, Manheim Borough and portions of Manheim and Clay townships. The WCAA responds to about 5,000 calls a year, ranging from chest pains to falls and car accidents.

Walker noted that the WCAA has a high standard of care.

“I believe professional development is the key (to continued improvement),” he said. “We want to find what drives our team members and give them opportunities to grow in those areas. We want to provide opportunities to become better leaders so we can build the next group of people. We believe the only way to get better is through education and development.”

It’s 50 highly trained emergency medical service professionals, 20 of whom work full time, that make the WCAA go. The WCAA employs 30 emergency medical technicians (EMTs), eight advanced EMTs, 10 paramedics and two pre-hospital registered nurses.

“These folks get into this career because they like to help people and solve problems,” said Walker. “We see people at their very worst. We show up and we can help them get the care they need, and we can start the care right there. We try to make their situations better. It’s something meaningful, and that’s what we want. You have to give people the best care you can.”

“But it’s more than just providing ambulance services,” Walker added. “We also do a lot of community outreach. We do a lot of education programs. We do a ton of first aid and CPR classes. We put our paramedics out at events so they can meet people.”

The WCAA performs its compassionate work with the aid of five

ambulances, three chase trucks, two e-bikes and a Gator, an all-terrain utility vehicle that can reach places that the other apparatus can’t. The WCAA is funded through medical insurance and Medicaid reimbursements, donations, fundraising, grants and subscription services.

“I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding about how EMS works,” said Walker. “It’s a hard business to be in. We operate at a deficit. We lose money every year. But you’re always going to get an ambulance when you call.”

The WCAA can trace its origins to 1956 when a group of local businessmen purchased a single ambulance.

“(The WCAA has) grown amazingly because of the support we get from the community,” Walker said. “I’ve never been in a place that supports the ambulance service like here. Back in the day, a couple guys would come to your house, throw you into the ambulance and get you to the hospital as fast as they could. Now, we’re doing amazing pre-hospital work, just incredible things people wouldn’t have imagined 70 years ago. It’s night and day.”

that feed its beauty.

“Our roads and infrastructure have gotten dated,” said Motz. “The main road going through the park has been paved so many times, and it can’t be repaved. In 1935, a person gave a $1 million grant (which would be $23 million now) to shape the park into what it is today. Our goal is to try and keep it with its history. We really don’t want to mold it or change it into something that it isn’t. But we’re in need of repair now.”

The history of Lititz Springs Park can be traced to the 1700s

and a time when the fledgling town was a closed community. In 1956, the Moravian church gifted Lititz Springs Park to the community.

“In a lot of ways, it hasn’t changed,” said Motz. “The park has maintained the traditions of back then. We’re trying to keep that history. We want people to know that it’s a place for rest and relaxation. We’re a major part of the community. It’s amazing how many people enjoy the park. We want to keep it for the public. That’s what a park is supposed to be.”

Faith UMC posts spaghetti dinner

Faith United Methodist Church (UMC), 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host a takeout spaghetti dinner on Sunday, Aug. 18, with pickup from 5 to 7 p.m. The entrance to the driveway is on Koser Road.

The meal will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, a salad, bread, and a sweet treat. A gluten-free option and a meatless

sauce option will be available.

Preorders by Friday, Aug. 16, are encouraged and can be placed by calling the church office at 717560-0321 or emailing FaithUMC@ hotmail.com. The food is available by donation either when meals are picked up or in advance at www.FaithUMC.us under “Online Giving.” All donations support the ministries of the church.

Come shopping at God’s Clothing Closet

Talk about a walk-in closet. When Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual clothing giveaway, the selection will fill the gym at the church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

God’s Clothing Closet, featuring free clothing, footwear and accessories for people of all ages, will be held on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24. Friday’s event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. by appointment only. On Saturday, the giveaway will be open from 8 to 11 a.m., and no appointment is necessary. To make an appointment for Friday, call or text 717-201-7566.

“This is our 24th year of God’s Clothing Closet,” said Kris Gray, who is chairing the event with Barb Dunmire. “Our volunteers put in hundreds of hours sorting clothing and getting everything ready.”

All clothing is inspected to be sure it’s clean and in good condition, she said. “We have clothing in all sizes, all seasons,” Gray noted. “This is some great ‘new to you’ clothing, and everybody’s welcome.”

At least half of the gym is filled with women’s clothing, with clothing for men and children sharing the other half, Gray said. “We get prom gowns. We’ve had wedding dresses, fancy dress clothes, maternity clothes, nursing scrubs,” Gray said. “The whole family can get something.”

raising awareness of the church and bringing people into the building, who may then seek additional information on the church, its services and its outreach programs. Gray explained that the inspiration for the giveaway came from another service project of the church. For years, church members collected clothing to donate to a mission in Appalachia, but the expense of sending the clothing added up. When Gray started talking to local families that

participated in a meal giveaway at the church, she realized the church could make an impact in its own community.

Although the giveaway is open to anyone regardless of need, it is especially impactful to see how the free items positively affect some of the shoppers, Gray said.

“We feel really blessed to be able to do this event,” she explained.

“There are so many people who are in need. So many stories come

back to us from people saying how much this meant to them. People look you in the eye when they leave and say, ‘Thank you. This was a big help for us.’”

Clothing donations for God’s Clothing Closet will be accepted at the church beginning on Monday, Aug. 19. Donations may be left under the covered front porch at the church, and labeling the bag with the size and type of clothing is helpful.

A table of free devotional materials will be set up for shoppers to peruse, and food donations will be collected for the Manheim Central Food Pantry if shoppers wish to bring some. Food donations are not required to attend the event.

“Back to school is right around the corner, and there is a need for something like this in the community,” Dunmire said. “Backto-school shopping can be very expensive.”

Last year, the church served about 443 shoppers over the twoday event. Shoppers donated a box of food to the pantry as well as close to $200 in cash to purchase more Bibles.

It takes a lot of help to be able to provide God’s Clothing Closet for the community, Gray said. Last year, more than 50 volunteers donated more than 300 hours of their time from setup to cleanup. Nothing goes to waste with the giveaway, either. Leftovers are donated to Jubilee Ministries in Manheim.

Although it requires time and effort to host God’s Clothing Closet, it’s important to the members of Ruhl’s Church, who are always looking for ways to connect with the larger community. The giveaway provides an opportunity to support people in need while also

Headquartered at 1891 Santa Barbara Drive, Suite 104, Lancaster, Compass Mark attempts to reach children in kindergarten through grade 12 before alcohol, drugs and gambling do. It drives its message home through workshops, skill-building, student assistance programs and good old-fashioned communication and interaction.

Last school year, Compass Mark connected with 8,000 kids in 66 schools from 28 school districts in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties.

“Before I came here, I didn’t know what prevention was,” said Tim Steffen, director of development and communications at Compass Mark. “We want to make clear how prevention works. nipping it in the bud.”

Some of the factors that put kids at risk for addiction include low commitment toward school, parental attitudes favorable toward antisocial behavior, low perceived risk of drug use and low neighborhood attachment.

“For kids 13 or younger who use any kind of substance, they have a 70% chance to develop an addiction in seven years,” said Miller-Landon. “We use data to know what’s going on in our community. It’s things we need to target as we design our programs. It’s much, much easier to prevent bad habits from starting than to try and change them. That’s much of the thinking. Sometimes substance abuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system and a criminal record.”

Overseen by a board of directors, Compass Mark employs 20 fulltime workers and about 20 parttime staff members, all trained to deliver the curriculum.

“A lot of people are skeptical about prevention,” said Miller-Landon. “But

prevention works. It’s about talking to kids often and talking to kids early. When kids are younger, they’re sponges. They just soak it in. They’re at an age when they still think (adults) know what they’re talking about.”

Compass Mark was founded in 1966 as the National Council for Alcoholism, Lancaster County.

Then the organization’s scope was broadened in the 1970s and ‘80s to include a focus on preventing illegal drug use, and later gambling.

“We’ve evolved with the community,” said Steffen. For additional information on Compass Mark, go to www .compassmark.org.

Chad Snyder appointed to state board of funeral directors

As a third-generation funeral director, Chad Snyder has a unique perspective of the profession. In 1947, Chad’s grandfather, Charles F. Snyder, opened a funeral home in downtown Lancaster, and the business grew to offer locations in Millersville, Willow Street, Lititz and other parts of the county. Chad watched his father, Chip Snyder, run the business after Charles retired, and Chad became the director in 2018. Chad was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Directors earlier this year, and he said he plans to use his experience to bridge the gap between funeral directors and state legislators to benefit Lancaster and communities throughout the state.

Since joining the state board of funeral directors, Chad has taken monthly trips to the capitol to meet with other funeral directors and government officials during public sessions. The meetings incorporate discussions on various issues that impact the funeral industry, such as the evaluation of funeral directors’ licenses and newly proposed legislation that could have cascading effects on funeral services across Pennsylvania. At 42 years old, Chad is the youngest member of the board, and he said he hopes to offer his fresh perspective of the industry to the board’s discussions.

“I’m looked at as the next generation of directors and a new set of eyes,” Chad said. “My desire is to be a spokesperson for great funeral service and to advocate for high standards, ethics and values. I’m very honored and humbled to be a representative for funeral services across the state.”

In addition to being the youngest member, Chad is the only member of the state board of funeral directors to operate multiple funeral homes. Chad helped design Charles F. Snyder’s Willow Street location, and he continues to work with his father to run the business. “My dad is still very involved, which I’m very grateful and blessed for,” Chad said. “I think my perspective will be helpful when looking at different situations brought to the board.”

Chad said he hopes to advocate for funeral directors and clients in every community in Pennsylvania in addition to Lancaster County.

“I’m taking on an important role not just for the community I live and work in, but to be a shoulder for other directors to lean on when they need help,” added Chad. “Across the board, we want to have the general public have a pleasant experience when the need arises.” Charles F. Snyder’s Willow Street location will host an educational workshop this October to explore different areas of funeral services and cremation services. Hearts of St. John Neumann Church and School beat as one

Is St. John Neumann a church or a school? It’s kind of like asking if Jesus Christ was a leader or a servant.

It’s difficult to decipher where one ends and the other one begins.

St. John Neumann is both a Catholic church and school. In a way, they are two separate entities functioning as one.

“They’re related to each other because the school is supported by the parish financially and through prayer,” said Fr. Dan Powell, the pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and School. “They’re separate in the sense that the school draws students from other Catholic parishes and other reli gious backgrounds. This past year, 20% of the school’s budget came from the parish. People know their money is going to the school. It’s an investment in the future. We think that Catholic education makes a difference in a child’s life and spiritual well-being.”

Located at 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, St. John Neumann Church is home to 2,600 families and 7,500 total parishioners. This school year, St. John Neumann School, which is named in honor of the Philadelphia bishop who founded the Catholic school system in the United States, will host 220 students from prekindergarten through eighth grade.

Since the former St. Anne’s Catholic School moved its operation to St. John Neumann four years ago, the school has witnessed steady growth, from 130 students in 2020-21 to 170 in 2021-22 to 200 in 2022-23 to 210 students last year.

St. John Neumann’s 2024-25 school year will begin Monday, Aug. 26.

particular needs of all our families.”

St. John Neumann, which falls under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, is one of six elementary and middle schools in Lancaster County that help populate Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). Powell said that a majority - up to 98% - of St. John Neumann students continue their education at LCHS.

“When you have a school at a church, it changes the entire dynamic,” said Powell, a 60-yearold native of Philadelphia who has been serving St. John Neumann for

the last eight years. “If you drive up to the church on a school day, you can expect to see kids. The parking lot is just full of life.”

With classes that range in size from 15 to 25 students, St. John Neumann employs 25 full- and part-time teachers and aides, a cafeteria staff of three and one principal. The school offers varying forms of financial aid and tuition assistance.

“The goal is that no one is ever turned away,” said Powell. “But we all have a role to play.”

Because of St. John Neumann’s

purposes in the community, there is a sense of duality to Powell’s role as well.

“My role is to guide the parish family and lead people closer to God,” said Powell. “My job is to lead the church from a spiritual point of view. It’s almost like being the CEO of a company. You’re overseeing everything and trying to know everything that is going on, but you’re also trusting people to help you.”
