MIce cream social at Mary Oehme Gardens to be fronted by Steel Radiance
usic, ice cream and gardens don’t have all that much in common. What they do is complement each other very well.
Music, ice cream and gardens are the premise upon which the Lititz Historical Foundation’s next big event is based. The annual fundraiser will benefit the very venue in which it is being staged.
“It’s really a fun, friendly atmosphere,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. “It’s a great atmosphere. You get to see your neighbors and listen to great music, all against a backdrop of a beautiful garden. The event is enhanced by the gardens.”
The 10th annual ice cream social will be presented by the Lititz Historical Foundation on
Sunday, Sept. 1 - the day before Labor Day - at 6:30 p.m. at the foundation’s Mary Oehme Gardens, 145 E. Main St., Lititz. The pay-as-you-will event will feature five flavors of ice cream from Greco’s of Lititz, a performance by the all-female local band Steel Radiance and the natural beauty of the gardens.
Along with the ice cream, additional refreshments will be available.
The ice cream social is being sponsored by Tiger’s Eye of Lititz, and all proceeds from the event will go toward maintaining and sprucing up the Mary Oehme Gardens. Participants and spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and their dancing shoes.
In the case of inclement weather, the ice cream social will be pushed back to the following Sunday, Sept. 8.

Kids love to discover. Kids love to be independent. Kids love to think.
Kids love Sky Bridge.
The High Foundation Sky Bridge, designed and fabricated by Luckey Climbers, is the Lancaster Science Factory’s latest hands-on exhibit for young learners. It represents the best kind of ingenuity, the kind that
inspires others to be creative.
“More than learning, it’s about inspiring children,” said Amanda Bakay, the Lancaster Science Factory’s director of programs and communications. “When they see it and get inside of it, they start to realize they could create something like this one day. It sparks an idea like, ‘What did someone have to do to think this thing up?’”

Of all God’s gifts, of all the natural resources we’ve been given, land is among the most precious. It’s certainly worth protecting.
The Lancaster Conservancy exists for the sole purpose of preserving land and ensuring that its use is beneficial to all. It’s the type of work that sometimes can go unnoticed or be taken for granted.
“We’re trying to protect as much land as we can and make it available to the community
Benefit car and motorcycle show planned
United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) will hold its annual Rockin’ Car and Motorcycle Cruise on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The event will feature a display of show vehicles, food, games, a silent auction, face painting for children and live music by Rew Smith.
The event is open to all vehicles. There is a suggested minimum donation to show a vehicle. Vehicle owners may begin parking their vehicles at 1:30 p.m., and all cars must be parked by 2:45 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded to winning show vehicles by celebrity guest judges. Awards will include Best of Show - Classic, Best of Show - Modern, Favorite Muscle Car, Favorite Paint, Favorite Cycle and Favorite Truck. There will also be a Grand Showcase winner. To view photos, winners and awards from previous years or to register a vehicle in advance, visit www.uzrc .org/news-events/car-cruise.
Forefront will sell pulled pork meals that come with two sides and a drink. Hand-dipped ice cream will also be available.
All proceeds will support benevolent care at UZRC, a nonprofit continuing care retirement community. The program provides assistance should a resident’s own resources become inadequate to cover the full cost of care. In 2023, $2 million in benevolent care was given to residents. During the car show, UZRC residents will rock in rocking chairs to raise additional money for the benevolent care fund.
Admission is free to the public. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or search for “United Zion Retirement Community” on Facebook. The event will be held rain or shine since indoor and covered outdoor activities will be available along with indoor tables for food service, including pulled pork meal pickup.

forever,” said Keith Williams, vice president of engagement and education for the Lancaster Conservancy. “We do that mostly by buying land and opening it to the public. We’re not anti-development; we think it should be done in the right way and in the right place.”
“We know that clean air and clean water come from protected land,” Williams continued. “It’s also for recreation. We’re giving our communities a way to get outside so people can restore themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. And with every
habitat we protect, we’re slowing the loss of species in our area.”
In Elizabeth Township, just west of Brickerville, the Lancaster Conservancy has acquired and protected nearly 300 acres of wooded land at four preserves - the 108-acre de Perrot Woods Nature Preserve, the 90-acre Speedwell Forge Nature Preserve, the 91-acre Rannels Kettle Run Nature Preserve and the 8-acre Upper Hopewell Forge Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of the preserves permit hiking, and all have been set aside to conserve natural

resources and species native to those areas.
“Those preserves are very typical of what we do as an organization,” said Williams. “Each piece of land we protect is special. They’re in close proximity to other protected land. We have limited resources. We can’t go out and buy everything.”
The acquisition of the four preserves and wildlife sanctuaries occurred between 1998 and 2022 and involved either family donations or Lancaster Conservancy purchases.
“Speedwell Forge is one of our oldest holdings,” said Williams. “De Perrot Woods is special. It’s a beautiful nature reserve.”
Over the 53 years of its existence, the Lancaster Conservancy, which operates in both York and Lancaster counties, has acquired and protected more than 10,000 acres of land through 50 nature preserves. Much of the Lancaster Conservancy’s current holdings in Lancaster County are concentrated along or near the Susquehanna River.
“If the Lancaster Conservancy didn’t exist, there would be a decrease in the quality of life,” said Williams. “From (Lancaster),
you can drive 30 minutes in any direction and be on a beautiful nature preserve, any day of the year. We’re this little nonprofit working hard to help everyone in the community.”
Headquartered at 117 S. West End Road, Lancaster, the Lancaster Conservancy, which was founded in 1969 by a group of hunters and fishermen, is operated by 25 staff members. The organization’s work is funded through donations and government grants.
“(The Lancaster Conservancy) was a small little nonprofit for a long time, run by all volunteers,” said Williams. “They just became extremely entrepreneurial and started to acquire land quickly. We’re in a race to get as much land as we can. Land is a limited resource. When it’s gone, it’s gone.”

“I enjoy the music,” said Van Brookhoven. “I like to see friends and local residents and catch up with them. It’s really for all ages, families with kids. It’s a mix of both young and old. It’s a way to enjoy a great evening in Lititz.”
Steel Radiance, which features Deb Olsen of Manheim on drums, Terri Brown of Manheim on vocals,
Gabbie Bonet of York on lead guitar and Lisa Rettew of Reading on bass guitar, will play two sets of ’60s, ’70s and ’80s classic rock and blues. The sets will be separated by a 15-minute intermission, and the entire performance is expected to conclude by 8:15 p.m.
“We love playing Lititz,” said Olsen. “It’s really cool and pretty
back there. The whole atmosphere is neat.”
“(Steel Radiance) is one of our most popular acts,” said Van Brookhoven.
Olsen promised that the audience of 300 to 400 people will be familiar with the band’s selections and that many will experience difficulties keeping their feet still.
“We feed off the people; we really do. If we see them having a good time, we love it. We enjoy each other and the people out there.”
The Lititz Historical Foundation presents similar fundraising performances in the Mary Oehme Gardens in June, July and August.
fees being used to offset the thousands of dollars required to maintain it.
“(The ice cream social) has gotten bigger and bigger,” said Van Brookhoven. “I think the community gives us a lot of support. Most people are generous throughout the year.”
“It’s all the good stuff that everybody knows, that people can relate to and sing and dance to,” said Olsen.
A multifaceted events space, the gardens property hosts weddings, meetings, professional photo shoots and parties of all kinds each year, with much of the rental

Program to focus on historical clothing
The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will offer a program, “Granny’s Panties,” on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.
Heather Gibbs of Treadle Treasures will speak about the various layers of clothing that people wore in years past. She will also display authentic apparel.
The program is free and open to the public. The
parking lot and entrance are accessible via the alley behind the church.

project, part gateway to higher learning, Sky Bridge opened to rave reviews at Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, in April of 2023. The $600,000 project was fabricated by construction artist and designer Spencer Luckey in his New England shop and then assembled at the Lancaster Science Factory over a three-week span.
“Sometimes kids like to see how quickly they can get to the top,” said Bakay. “It kind of looks like a giant ant farm when it’s filled with children. Sometimes kids will climb to the highest point and hang out. It’s almost like a cool clubhouse.”
When visitors to Lancaster Science Factory round the corner from the main entrance, they are confronted with Sky Bridge, which is attached to beams on the high ceiling of the former manufacturing plant. But the massive structure does not make contact with the ground.
“We’ve always wanted to use our horizontal space, to have a bridge span over our main exhibit hall,” said Bakay. “It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before, just because you can climb in it. It’s so accessible, and having a bird’s-eye view of the exhibit hall is so cool.”

together by thick wire netting, Sky Bridge is a series of 35 wooden panels strategically spaced throughout the structure. Sky Bridge both stands out and fits right in with the Lancaster Science Factory’s 75 other exhibits.
“Everything we do is very hands-on and interactive,” said Bakay. “Everything we have requires you to do something and try something in a different way. Sky Bridge is like our other exhibits because it’s immersive, but there’s no beginning, middle or end. We also really don’t have anything else you can get inside and climb on.”
During 2023, nearly 71,000 individuals visited the Lancaster Science Factory, about 11,000 more than officials had projected. When those officials searched for reasons for the increase, they looked to Sky Bridge.
“It’s made a huge impact on our visitation,” said Bakay. “(The increase) was all, or in part, because of Sky Bridge. It gave us something to talk about.”
Partly through the funding of a $1 million capital campaign, the Lancaster Science Factory, which boasts 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, opened in 2008.
