CASA event will celebrate transformative powers of heroes
BY JEFF FALK
Heroes come in all shapes, sizes and ages. The heroic volunteers of Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties serve, place others ahead of themselves and seek to make the world a better place to live.
CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ upcoming gala is the nonprofit’s signature event, partly because it celebrates these

heroes. It also brings together volunteers, donors, community members and friends, new and old alike.
“It’s always about putting the best interests of youth first,” said Margie Lamberson, CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ director of development. “A CASA (court-appointed special advocate) is appointed by the court, and they’re another set of eyes and ears for the judge,” she explained. “A CASA is always there for (children who have been abused or neglected). That’s their sole purpose. They’re
constantly asking, ‘What does the child need? Are they being well cared for? How are they doing in school?’”
The 14th edition of CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties’ annual Heroes Gala, this year titled “A Storybook Soiree: Changing a Child’s Story One Chapter at a Time,” will be presented from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz.
The gala will feature a reception, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner and a silent auction.
The deadline for purchasing tickets at www.Storybook.Soiree .givesmart.com is Friday, Aug. 30. Individuals can bid on silent auction items or donate directly to CASA of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties at the same website beginning Wednesday, Sept. 4.
“It will be a celebratory evening of recognizing the hard work that the CASA volunteers perform,” said Lamberson. “People can change a child’s story just by being there. It’s an adult evening, but it’s not a stuffy group. This group likes to have fun. It’s an opportunity to do something a little different. Not only will it raise funds to support our mission, (but) it will also raise awareness about what we do.”
At the gala, CASA of Lancaster
and Lebanon Counties will also recognize Jenny Habecker of Hummelstown as its Hero of the Year and TriStarr of Lancaster as its Business Hero of the Year.

COBYS Family Services’ upcoming multifaceted Bike & Hike event is the organization’s biggest and most beneficial fundraiser.
“My favorite part is seeing everyone come together,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS’ director of development for six years. “There is a lot going on that day. But the beauty is that the participants can pick what makes the best sense to them. There are a lot of different options so participants can choose what they want to be a part of. It’s amazing to see a lot of different people.”
“The purpose of the event is to make sure COBYS can provide all of its services, day in and day out,” Stokes added. “People learn about all the things COBYS is doing.”
“Businesses like TriStarr help promote what we do,” said Lamberson. “Jenny always goes above and beyond; she always goes the extra mile to advocate for the youth in her care and make sure they have all the resources they need.”
Nearly 300 people are expected to attend the gala. Organizers are seeking to raise more than
The 28th edition of COBYS’ annual Bike & Hike event will be presented on Sunday, Sept. 8, from noon to 3 p.m. at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event will feature three active options for supporters to choose from.

Teaching values through investments
Faithward Advisors, a Lancaster-based financial firm, wants to help ensure that investments do more than just grow wealth. The company communicates values to the next generation by pioneering a movement that integrates faithbased principles into investment strategies.
A Pew Research survey found that 31% of parents reported religious values as one of the most important things they teach their children. In fact, teaching religious faith was ranked by parents as the third most important trait to pass on to future generations, only outranked by responsibility and hard work.
According to Bernie Bostwick, president of Faithward Advisors, the firm’s Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI) approach helps families to communicate their faith and values in a tangible way, through their financial choices, which can create a lasting impact on their children and grandchildren.
BRI involves screening processes to help ensure investments support companies that uphold family-friendly values, such as those promoting human dignity and environmental stewardship.
Faithward Advisors’ tailored BRI solutions offer a variety of investment options, each curated to meet stringent standards. For more information, visit www.Faithward Advisors.com or call 717-560-8300.
Faithward Advisors wants to help investors align their financial decisions with their Christian values. This approach can help secure a financial future and also serve as a moral legacy for future generations.

Flu vaccinations available
The Giant Company has announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all Giant and Martin’s in-store pharmacies.
Flu shots for the 202425 flu and cold season are all trivalent and intended to protect against three strains of influenza: H1N1, H3N2 and a B/Victoria lineage virus. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies carry several different types of flu shots for children,
adults and seniors, including standard and high-dose products.
Most insurance plans cover flu shots with $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations.
Never Forget 9/11 Cruise slated
Walk-ins are welcome, but customers can also make an appointment if they prefer. In addition, starting on Friday, Aug. 30, customers who present their Giant or Martin’s card and receive a flu shot can get an offer for $5 off $25 of a future grocery order.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots by the end of October for everyone 6 months and older, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over age 65, children under age 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

“The outpouring at the gala is pretty special. We have generous sponsors,” said Lamberson. “We all have stories. Koffee Konnect brings people together
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When she moved to Lititz a few years ago, Ann Marie Edwards yearned to make connections.
“I wanted to find my people,” she said. “I wanted to meet people in person.”
SHOW
Edwards had started a successful book club, and once she moved to Lancaster County from Montgomery County, she became the moderator for a Lititz community gifting Facebook page. Through those connections, she learned of a coffee klatch meeting in Parkesburg, so she reached out to the group’s founder, Kathi Rendall, about starting a local coffee meetup.
“I’m a connector,” Edwards said simply. “It’s easy for me to talk to people and bring people together.”
Koffee Konnect Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata met for the first time earlier this month at New Holland Coffee Co. in Lititz.
“Eight people showed up, including myself,” Edwards said, noting she was pleased with the turnout. “People want to connect with other people, face-to-face, in person.”
Edwards envisions Koffee Konnect as being an organic experience, with the group meeting at
various places throughout the Lititz, Manheim and Ephrata areas on days and at times that suit various schedules.
“The biggest challenge I’ve faced with this has been finding a time that works for everyone,” she said. “So, I don’t want to have a set time and day. The idea is to just get people together to hang out or spend time together when they can.”
Edwards will propose a meeting date, time and place through the Facebook group page, and others are invited to do the same.
At a meetup, Edwards wears a name tag so people can identify her, and then she encourages participants to introduce themselves. Beyond that, it’s an unstructured time to get to know new people. Rendall recently commented on Edwards’ group page for Koffee Konnect, and her words resonated with Edwards.
“She said, ‘It is a revolution of human kindness, and it can’t be stopped,’” Edwards shared. “There is so much value in human connection. A lot of us have friends on social media, but we don’t feel a connection just chatting online with them. It’s not enough. We’re still

lonely. This is an opportunity to establish real connections.”
Edwards noted that response to her page has been positive, with multiple comments from people who are interested in participating in the group.
She hopes people will take that first step and come to a meetup, noting that the group is open to men and women of all ages.
“Many of us wonder, ‘How are people supposed to meet each other?’” Edwards said. “This is an easy way. You just have to have the willingness to say you’re lonely. The risk
is minimal. You just have to put yourself out there. You don’t have to have a big personality. You just have to be bold enough to walk in, look for the crazy lady wearing a name tag and when you find me, you’ll feel welcome. You’ll feel like you’ve found a friend.”

Squadron names new commander
Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Squadron 304 held a change of command ceremony at its meeting on Aug. 5 to appoint Cadet Capt. Judah Acosta as the new cadet commander.
During the change of command ceremony, the squadron conducted the formal transfer of command from outgoing cadet commander Cadet Maj. Slater Shannon to Acosta, who will now lead the unit.
Under Shannon’s leadership, Squadron 304 was recognized as the Pennsylvania Wing Squadron of
Merit for 2023, an award presented by the Pennsylvania Wing this past January.
Acosta brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His commitment to excellence and leadership skills have been evident throughout his tenure in the squadron. Acosta follows in the footsteps of his elder siblings, former Cadet Cols. Josiah Acosta and Jurnee Acosta, both of whom have previously held the position of cadet commander.
