St. Paul’s prayer labyrinth can draw visitors closer to God
BY JEFF FALK
An important element of our spiritual lives, prayer is a way for us to connect directly with God.
There is no bad place to perform the act of prayer. But depending upon an individual’s perspective, some spaces may be better than others.
St. Paul Lutheran Church’s prayer labyrinth encourages prayer in an attempt to broaden our spiritual horizons.
“It’s kind of like a grounding area to pray,” said Suzanne Black, the church’s new director of outreach. “Ours is in a place in nature, so maybe you can spend more time praying than you would at other places. It’s in a
nice quiet spot. It grounds you with God during your prayer.”
The prayer labyrinth is part of the church’s sacred grounds, nestled in a natural wildflower meadow on the south side of the church’s structure at 200 W. Orange St., Lititz. The labyrinth is situated in an area surrounded by the church’s native forest, monarch waystation and community garden.
The prayer labyrinth is open to the public.
“Personally, I define prayer as a quiet time to speak to God and acknowledge his presence in my life,” said Black. “Prayer’s important because we’re all so busy in our daily lives. Setting aside time for prayer is important.”
Built from crushed stone and larger stones that serve as guide
rails and adorned by native and nonnative plants, the prayer labyrinth is a simple walkway that winds its way within itself. The labyrinth is designed to produce a leisurely stroll that places one’s mind in a relaxed state suited for reflection, meditation and prayer.
“A labyrinth is a circular pathway that ends in one specific spot,” said Black. “It’s not like a maze. It has a specific route to get to the middle. Ours is not very long; some are longer.”
The use of labyrinths for spiritual purposes dates back more than 1,700 years. The construction of St. Paul’s prayer labyrinth was completed on Nov. 18, 2023.
“(Prayer labyrinths) have been around for a very long time,” said Black. “The circular pathway is

There was a time in the early stages of the Chocolate Walk’s development when Mark Freeman was meeting with local downtown Lititz merchants in an attempt to secure sponsorships and commitments.
Freeman was trying to sell the event on its merit, the impact that it might have on the community and the local good that could be accomplished through the fundraiser’s donations to nonprofits.
Freeman was caught a bit off guard by the local businesses’ collective response.
“They said, ‘We don’t care. It’s chocolate,’” said Freeman. “That’s when we knew we had
something special.”
That was more than 20 years ago. Now, Freeman is still heavily involved in the event, and the Lititz Kiwanis Club is preparing

Lancaster County residents have been celebrating the harvest at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, for a very long time, even before it was an official address.
It’s a tradition that Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has grown through its Harvest Days event. Growing traditions is just one of the things that Landis Valley is good at.
“(Harvest Days) really transforms everyone back to
another time, just to see how things were done back then,” said Brian Dom, who’s been Landis Valley’s marketing and events coordinator for a year. “Basically, it’s a celebration of the end of the harvest in Lancaster County. We use it to highlight the crafts and trades used in the harvest. When people are here, we see personal reflection, and we don’t see a lot of cell phones. The focus is on family time and realizing the beautiful history we have here in Lancaster County.”
Landis Valley will stage this

Harvest Days
year’s edition of its annual Harvest Days on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in and around the 40 historic buildings situated on its 100 scenic acres. The event is highlighted by craft, food and other demonstrations related to the harvest, presented by experts dressed in 1700s-era clothing.
Parking is free, and an admission fee will be charged. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.
“What makes Harvest Days so unique is that you step right off Route 722, and when you step inside our village, you don’t even know there’s an outside world,” said Dom. “The Pennsylvania Germans came here with nothing and expanded the agricultural scene of Lancaster County immensely. That’s our goal: to educate and keep these memories alive.”
“For me personally, my favorite part of Harvest Days is the smiles,” continued Dom. “The smiles have always done it for me. When you’re on-site, it’s hard to be upset. Everything seems to fade away when you step into the village.”
Through its demonstrating presenters, Harvest Days focuses on trades like coopering, blacksmithing, pottery, millinery, leatherworking and broom-making; foods like apple butter, sauerkraut and pork, as well as oven and hearth cooking; and fiber arts like weaving and spinning. In addition to the exhibits and demonstrations, Harvest Days will include live music, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating and a silent auction. A live auction will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.
It takes a group of more than 100 staff members and volunteers for Landis Valley to present Harvest Days.
“When we’re demonstrating crafts, people have renewed interest, just seeing how some of those crafts used to be done,” said Dom. “The past just relives itself, especially in the agricultural field. Visitors are getting the history we offer here, and they’re also getting those personal connections.”
“We’re also going to use Harvest Days to highlight the additions in
our museum,” he added.
More than 2,000 visitors are expected to attend the 11 hours of Harvest Days, an event that Landis Valley has been staging for more than 60 years. Next year, Landis Valley will celebrate its 100th year as a museum, attraction and destination.
“I think locals will enjoy (Harvest Days) because there’s a connection for almost everyone who lives here,” said Dom. “We want people to come out, walk through and see what personal connections they can find.”

Maintaining older vehicles
New cars have been costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come. - Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of
the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.
- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.
- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often
than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.
- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.
The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.
Recognizing brake issues
Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.
Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.
Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-
pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.
Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.
Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.
Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.

meant to represent a person’s spiritual journey.”
St. Paul Lutheran Church’s prayer labyrinth is used for group services, as well as personal prayer. It fits in well with the church’s mission: “Rooted in God’s grace, we grow loving relationships with Jesus and one another to serve the world.”
St. Paul parishioners complete the final phases of construction of the prayer labyrinth in November of 2023.
“We are pleased so many people are using it,” said Black. “We are still developing the (sacred grounds), so we can encourage even more people to use the space. The sacred grounds is an area where we’re trying to take care of God’s creations. It’s part of the church’s mission, but not the whole mission.”
Intentional or not, the prayer labyrinth can serve as an outreach
tool for the church and community.
“St. Paul Lutheran is a very welcoming church,” said Black. “We’d like to share God’s message with the community. The prayer labyrinth is a space meant to make you feel welcome. We would like to help the community as a whole come together.”

Chocolate Walk
to stage the Chocolate Walk’s 23rd edition. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at various participating businesses in downtown Lititz.
Tickets can be purchased at www.lititzchocolatewalk.com.
“(Lititz’s history with chocolate) is one of the reasons we do it,” said Freeman, who was a representative of Wilbur Chocolate when he helped found the Chocolate Walk in 2001. “Wilbur is here, and the town is known for chocolate. We want to make sure it lives on. There’s still (Wilbur) chocolate made on West Lincoln Avenue. We’re a town that wants to be known for chocolate. We want to be known as a foodie town.”
Participants in the Chocolate Walk process from downtown business to downtown businessabout 30 in all - sampling candies, cookies, cakes and other culinary creations made from one of the world’s most popular sweet treats. Wilbur Chocolate serves as the
basis for many, but not all, of the recipes used at Chocolate Walk.
“These are all culinary professionals, some creating something special and some handing out what they normally make,” said Freeman. “It absolutely speaks to the versatility of chocolate. There are a wide variety of products that can be made from it. You can flavor it in so many different ways and create so many things from it. When you add chocolate, they become things that people want more.”
Up to 2,000 visitors are expected to attend the Chocolate Walk. The Lititz Kiwanis Club is hoping to raise up to $100,000 for children-oriented nonprofits like Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the Lititz Public Library and the Manheim Township Public Library.
“The Chocolate Walk is a very fun day for the community,” said Freeman. “We bring a fair number of people to town who enjoy being in Lititz. The comment that always

comes back to us is, ‘What a friendly town it is.’ It’s great to be a part of the community in that way.”
Along with a wine, cheese and chocolate virtual tasting party in February and the Pretzel Fest and a kids’ day in Lititz Springs Park, both of which take place in May, the Chocolate Walk is one of four events that the Lititz Kiwanis Club sponsors on a yearly basis. The Kiwanis Club, which has about 30
members, was founded in Lititz in the late 1990s.
“The Kiwanis Club is all about supporting children’s activities in the community and improving the world one child at a time,” said Freeman. “Like any service organization, we’re continually trying to find new members and to bring new energy to the club. We’re pretty much as strong now as we’ve ever been.”
