BSA Troop 44 employs traditional methods to foster future leaders

Some people may think that Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is geared towards kids. But the experiences that Scouts enjoy help transform them from boys and girls to young men and women.

Scouts BSA Troop 44 of Lititz’s mission is to positively affect the development of school-aged youths. Troop 44 executes its mission through traditional values, supportive role models and example-setting life experiences, all with the motto, “Be prepared.”

“I hope (Scouting) helps with (the boys’) decision making and becoming leaders,” said Troop 44 Scoutmaster Joel Henkel. “Not every boy is going to become an Eagle Scout and that’s OK. But they still have the skills. My goal is that (the Scouts are) better people from Scouting.”

“It’s a lot of fun watching them grow,” Henkel added. “When they come into the troop, they’re very shy. But you can see their personalities develop.”

Troop 44 is a member of the

At 20 years of age, Kaufhold is, and always will be, all three.

The 2022 graduate of Conestoga

Valley High School is now more than a month removed from competing at her second Summer Olympic Games, and in many ways, the glow has yet to wane.

“I’m still riding the high because I worked so hard to get there,” said Kaufhold, one of the finest female archers in the world. “I’m definitely still settling in from the experience. So few people get an opportunity to compete at the Olympics. So, to do it twice by the

Iron Forge District in Scouts BSA’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. Troop 44 meets at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. The group is

made up of 26 boys ages 12 to 18, who mainly reside in the Lititz and Warwick areas.

“We like to encourage the boys to explore the outdoors and become leaders,” said Henkel.

“It’s a boys-run troop; all the boys contribute their ideas. We leaders do the leg work, but they run the meetings. The younger Scouts are learning from their predecessors.”

“We have boys with a wide variety of interests,” he continued. “Some are huge into electronics or engineering. We have a lot who are into the outdoors. Surprisingly, (the Scouts) all get along, even though they’re from different backgrounds. It goes really well. It’s about experiencing things you never thought you would. It’s like, ‘Hey, give it a shot. You might actually end up liking it.’ All we ask is that you try it. It’s a lot more than rank advancement.”

Considering input from their adult leaders, members of Troop 44 decide on the activities in which they will engage. The troop goes on about one day trip and one weekend trip each month - everything from hiking to biking to fishing to

Performer Cody McSherry has the music in him

Cody McSherry has been performing for as long as he can remember. In many ways, performing is at the core of what he does and who he is.

As he prepares to experience things in life that he never has before, the 2021 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and native of Conestoga can’t imagine an existence without performing.

“As a person, I’ll continue to perform,” said McSherry, who’s

Staying sharp: Brain-boosting tips

Cognitive decline is a concern for many adults as they get older. Memory loss and trouble processing ideas can sometimes be a side effect of aging, as Everyday Health says the brain changes in size and structure as a person gets older. The changes can affect how well the brain works over time. Furthermore, illnesses affecting the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, may start showing their symptoms in people who have reached their mid60s, says the National Institute on Aging.

Older adults who want to boost their cognitive health may consider a few strategies.

Maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is associated with better cognitive function, according to data published in 2021 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Lowering blood pressure also reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

When learning new information, people are encouraged to use multiple senses. Harvard Health says that when more senses are used in learning something, more of the brain is involved in retaining the memory. Staying physically active is also important. Exercise helps maintain blood flow to the brain, which also

helps to reduce the risk for hypertension.

According to Cone Health Medical Group, eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like tuna, salmon, and mackerel, decreases risk for cognitive decline. People should avoid saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated oils.

Getting into the written word can also be beneficial. According to a study in the journal Neurology, regular reading and writing in one’s older years reduced the rate of memory decline by 32%.

Joining a book club or simply reading more on one’s own can improve cognition. Similarly, writ-

ing improves memory and communication abilities and can help strengthen the brain.

Avoid drinking sugary beverages and limit consumption of alcohol, as neither boasts brain-boosting properties. Instead, consider tea or coffee; these beverages can improve alertness and focus, as they’re rich in polyphenols and antioxidants. A Place for Mom says caffeine in these beverages can help solidify new memories.

Keeping the brain sharp is a multilayered process that involves healthy foods and beverages, exercise, and brain-stimulating activities.

Seniors can swim their way to improved health

Exercise provides a number of measurable benefits for people of

all ages, including older adults. Swimming is one exercise that may be

especially beneficial for seniors.

Many people learn to swim in childhood and sharpen that skill as they get older. Although swimming devotees may get in the water for fun rather than fitness, this pastime may be the ideal exercise for seniors looking to improve their overall health, particularly because it is very low-impact.

Because the water provides buoyancy, there is reduced risk of injury and minimal strain on the body. Water exercises, including swimming, work all the muscle groups, so it can be a complete exercise, says American Senior Communities. Swimming also is a great cardiovascular exercise that can strengthen the heart muscle and improve lung function and endurance. Because it lowers blood pressure and improves circulation, swimming is a great way to get the heart pumping.

A gentle, 30-minute swim can burn up to 200 calories, which is more than would be used when walking. A faster swim can burn calories more quickly

canoeing and backpacking - in addition to attending an extended camping trip each summer.

Troop 44 also gives back to the community through various service projects.

“My favorite thing is going camping and getting outdoors,” said Henkel, who was a Boy Scout himself 20 years ago. “I like the camaraderie of just being with the Scouts. A lot of kids just like the outdoors and helping out.”

“One of the things I want our troop to focus on is first aid,” added Henkel. “You never know when you’re going to need it. But when you need it, you have it.”

Next year will be the 70th year that Troop 44 has been associated with St. Paul Lutheran Church.

“There are a lot of troops that

are closing because participation is down,” said Henkel. “We’re actually fairly strong. I really hope we can grow from 26 members. I think we have a great group of leaders. I think we have a great group of kids. I just hope to build on that. Every kid is welcome.”

than running or cycling, and since water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, this activity will put less stress on muscles and joints while one is exercising.

Individuals with mobility issues or arthritis pain may find that swimming helps relieve discomfort and improves range of motion. The water is doing much of the work holding up the body, which takes the stress off joints, helping a person to feel better while moving.

Even seniors who don’t know how to swim can reap the benefits of water exercise. Walking in shallow water or using a kickboard to stay above the water can be effective. Using foam dumbbells or even pushing and pulling one’s arms through the water can serve as a great resistance exercise that builds strength.

Swimming and additional water activities are great ways for seniors to stay in shape. As always, individuals should speak with their doctors before beginning any exercise regimen to ensure that it is safe.

on track to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in May of 2025. “I don’t know who it will be with or if it will be solo. ... Performing is something you do forever.”

McSherry is currently a singing, dancing, accordion-playing, music-producing member of the Pittsburgh-based, nationally known traveling performance troupe, the Tamburitzans, whose members are all college students. When McSherry graduates from college this spring, his four-year stint with the Tamburitzans will

end.

“(The four years with the Tamburitzans have) been great,” said McSherry. “You form bonds in the Tamburitzans. You’re living together on tours, and we all share in the joy of performing. We all have a lot in common. It’s a great way to explore performing.”

McSherry will perform with the group one final time in Lititz on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St. The hour-and-40-minute show titled “Legacy” will feature

the 25-member Tamburitzans performing folk music and dancing from eight different countries and regions of the world.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased at www.thetamburitzans.org.

Following the Lititz show, McSherry will perform with the Tamburitzans at a number of venues across the country before his time with the troupe ends in the spring.

that culture.”

McSherry’s post-graduation plans include learning, teaching and graduate school.

“I want to teach,” said McSherry. “I’ve wanted to teach language for years. I’m a little indecisive about which languages, but I’m leaning toward the Slavic languages. I want to be a professor.”

“From the audience’s perspective, it’s going to be an exciting show,” said McSherry. “You’re experiencing a lot of bright and energetic dances. You get an enormous variety of music, which keeps the audience engaged in the show.”

“This is the last performance of the Tamburitzans in Lititz which I will be a part of,” continued McSherry. “I’d like it to be the biggest performance of the Tamburitzans in Lititz, just because I want to share the moment with as many people as possible. I tend to be a person who likes to look ahead. This is definitely a chapter that will be hard to close. ... I’ll definitely be excited at the Lititz show. It’s going to be a weird feeling for sure.”

For McSherry, performing is a way to interact with an audience and a tool used for teaching and entertaining.

“I think performing, specifically music and dance, is one of the best ways to share a culture,” said McSherry. “You’re playing really fun music, and you’re getting to show off a little bit. For me, it’s about exposing a culture to people. It’s a lot about being an ambassador for

age of 20 and get a medal, I’m grateful and thankful.”

“I think the best part of competing was having my family there,” continued Kaufhold. “I also competed at Tokyo (in 2021), and I couldn’t have my family there (because of the pandemic). To get a medal and have them there was really special.”

On Aug. 2 in Paris, during

competition in the 2024 Summer Olympics, Kaufhold and teammate Brady Ellison captured a bronze medal in the mixed team archery event with a 6-2 victory over India. The medal was the first ever for the United States in the mixed team archery event, and Kaufhold became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in archery since 1988.

Earlier in the Games, Kaufhold had finished 17th in the women’s individual archery event and was part of a USA squad that came in ninth in the women’s team archery competition.

“The women’s individual and team events were the first two events I competed in, and they didn’t go the way I would’ve liked,” said Kaufhold. “I struggled

with nerves. When I went into the mixed team competition, I wanted to stick with my process. I didn’t feel I shot as well as I could have, and I wanted to show what I could do. I wanted to shoot the way I was in practice. My goal was to come home with a medal. I didn’t want to come home empty handed.”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio
