Halloween parade is when local boys and girls come out to play

The Lititz Lions Halloween parade has always been about community.

“It’s a parade for kids,” said Lititz Lion Ted Beck, who’s coordinating the Halloween parade.

“I think it’s a fun time for kids to dress up. My favorite part is not only seeing the kids, but especially adults dressing up, just being a different person, a different character. When I see kids dress up and having fun, that brings joy to my heart.”

The 77th annual Lititz Lions Halloween parade will step off at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28. The downtown Lititz streets will close at 6 p.m. to allow the parade to

form, and the festivities are expected to begin winding down around 8 p.m.

The Halloween parade will start at the corner of Locust and Main streets, proceed west and turn left onto South Broad Street and then turn right on West Orange Street. The parade will disband in Warwick High School’s parking lot, 301 W. Orange St.

“I see Lititz as a quilt,” said Beck. “There are so many events that Lititz has that families can participate in. They all fit and they’re coordinated with each other. (The Halloween parade) is a time for families to come together. It’s a free night and it’s a safe night. You see people from Brickerville, Brunnerville,

Rothsville and Manheim there. All these different patches make up a quilt to celebrate what a small town is really all about.”

The Lititz Lions Halloween parade will feature nearly 70 groups, floats and individuals representing sports teams, Scout troops, school groups, dance teams and emergency service units. Prizes will be awarded in three children’s categories: individuals or groups of eight marchers or fewer, groups of nine or more and floats. The Lititz Lions Club will operate a concession stand at the corner of Main and Cedar streets, near the judges’ stand.

There will also be a DJ spinning Halloween-themed music and

It’s not about destruction, finality or even devastation. Nothing like that.

In fact, the Apoca-Lititz 5K represents just the opposite. It’s an event that promotes maintaining, nurturing and moving forward.

So, what’s in a name?

“It’s another way to enjoy our amazing community,” said Emily Allen, executive director of Venture Lititz, which sponsors Apoca-Lititz 5K. “It’s supposed to be fun, celebratory and exciting. It’s a great chance for people to meet each other, get a little exercise and dress in costume. It’s a costume fun run.”

The Apoca-Lititz 5K is an event that’s as competitive as dressed-up participants care to make it, as they can choose to run or walk. The 5K is conducted to raise funds for Venture Lititz, the downtown business district’s advocate, supporter and partner. This year’s version of the annual event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 9 a.m., beginning and ending at Stoll

The experiences of fostering and adopting children can be both challenging and rewarding. They’re experiences that COBYS can both enhance and make more manageable.

Louis and Melissa Zoeller have been married 16 years, and they are the parents of seven kids, two of whom are their biological offspring and five of whom they adopted through the help of

COBYS Family Services. For the Zoellers, who have affectionately dubbed their family “The Zoeller Bunch,” it’s sometimes a hectic, topsy-turvy existence, but one that they have no regrets about.

“If there was one thing that brought (Melissa and me) together, it was that we felt God was calling us to adopt,” said Louis. “It was the one thing we could agree upon. When we got involved with COBYS, it helped that they were a faith-based

organization. When they asked us if we wanted to adopt, we prayed on it and said yes.”

In addition to Louis and Melissa, the Mountville-based Zoeller Bunch includes Coral, 15; Dominic, 14; Sophie, 8; Izabel, 6; Tatum, 6; Oaklee, 5; and Carson, 4. Sophie, Tatum, Izabel, Oaklee and Carson were all under the Zoellers’ foster care first before being officially adopted at various times over the last six years.

Before they were legally adopted, the children were wards of the state, meaning they could’ve been removed from the Zoeller household at any time.

“Foster care exists to give biological families an opportunity to get safe,” said Melissa. “Foster care exists to provide safety for children. Kids need to be safe. If (biological) parents can’t meet those safety standards, the goal changes from re-unification to adoption. Adoption only happens

when kids can’t re-unify safely. The primary goal is always working with the (biological) family. There’s no question that the biological families love them.”

“For us, we truly never knew if we were going to adopt until the decision was kind of made for us,” said Louis. “The courts decide which way the case is going to go. You know that any day (the children) could be out of your home.”

Before they became foster parents, Melissa and Louis received specific training from COBYS Family Services. During and after the foster care and adoption processes, the Zoellers have been afforded support opportunities that include regular visits from COBYS representatives, advice, encouragement, financial assistance and 24-hour access to a counselor.

“(COBYS) is there to facilitate and support foster families,” said Louis. “If we have questions, we go to them. We had a county caseworker

and a COBYS caseworker. (COBYS) was basically our main contact. Overall, COBYS is there for you.”

According to COBYS Family Services, approximately 15,000 children are currently in the Pennsylvania child welfare system. They are unable to live with their biological families because of abuse, neglect or behavioral issues.

“For us, (adoption) really wasn’t a question,” said Melissa, “because you get to know the kids. We already knew them; they already knew us. There’s no reason for it not to be forever.”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

& Wolfe Distillery, 35 N. Cedar St., Lititz.

Participants can preregister for the race at www.lititzpa.com/ event/apoca-lititz-5k or with cash prior to the event on that Saturday. Same-day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the race, and at 10:30 a.m., prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers and the best costumes in the categories of adult males and females, boys and girls and groups.

Refreshments and coffee will be available.

“It’s a family event,” said Allen.

“It’s for people who want to come out and enjoy our community in a different way. Some people just like to dress up. People just have fun in their costumes.”

“I like seeing everybody come together and being in costumes,” Allen continued. “I like the community aspect of it. It’s just a great way to bring the community together more.”

From 35 N. Cedar St., the ApocaLititz 5K’s out-and-back course will traverse Front Street and portions of the Lititz-to-Ephrata Rails-toTrails and take runners past John R. Bonfield Elementary School.

“There aren’t a lot of hills,” said

Allen.

More than 200 runners are expected to participate in the Apoca-Lititz 5K. All proceeds raised by the event will go toward Venture Lititz projects like production maps of the downtown and a business district guide, as well as various beautification projects.

“It goes toward the central work of Venture Lititz, which is to bring more people to the downtown business community,” said Allen.

“We love Lititz. We are dedicated to preserving Lititz. We’re constantly asking, ‘How do we make Lititz better? What new businesses can

we attract to town?’”

It takes more than 50 mostly volunteers to pull off the Apoca-Lititz 5K, which is one of five events that Venture Lititz sponsors each year.

The local nonprofit, which was founded in 2006, also conducts a New Year’s Eve gala in December, its Fire & Ice winter festival in February, Taste of Lititz in June and a farmers market from April to October.

“All of our events are totally different,” said Allen. “We try not to do the same events over and over. We want to promote healthy living. We want to encourage people to enjoy the town and the amazing community we have.”

“It gets darker and darker, and by 7 p.m. it’s dark,” said Beck. “You can see the anticipation. There are kids with bags ready for candy.”

“(The Halloween parade) is not a fundraiser,” he added. “It’s a give-back to the community. We do have some businesses sponsoring the Halloween parade, which we’re really grateful for.”

The Lititz Lions Club was founded in 1941, six years before it established the annual Halloween parade. The Lititz Lions Club, which consists of 52 members, also sponsors the town’s annual Fourth of July patriotic parade, as well as four other yearly community-enriching events.

“We want to be involved in the local community,” said Beck. “We want to provide opportunities for the community to come together.

We maintain these community events year in and year out because families rely on them. I absolutely believe there’s a cool partnership with the people and families who live in Lititz, Warwick Township and Elizabeth Township. I think deep in their hearts they love this community.”

Stone House Breakdown will perform at the Eicher Arts Center on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. The arts center is located at the historic Eicher House, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Stone House Breakdown revives and celebrates Appalachian music. It plays original songs in traditional bluegrass style, old-time standards, bluegrass gospel, and contemporary Americana folk music. The band’s style is reminiscent of the music of the Stanley Brothers, which began performing in the 1940s and in 1995 was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Stone House Breakdown was named the best bluegrass band in central Pennsylvania last year by the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame.

The band’s members include Jena Bomboy, vocals and guitar, and her husband, Robb Bomboy, vocals and mandolin. Jena and Robb first met at an open mic event in Winchester,

Va. The band also includes Jena’s father, Jan Strock, bass; Patrick MacDonald Jr., vocals and banjo; and Tish Brown, vocals and fiddle. MacDonald has been playing Earl Scruggs-style banjo for about 16 years.

Inspired by the scenic countryside in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley, the band took its name in part from Old Stone House Road in Monroe Township, Cumberland County. Admission is free. Donations to the Eicher Arts Center Inc., a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, will be accepted.

Collaboration brings pretzels and the library together

Last school year, Kayla Wilkinson was working on a homeschool lesson about Pennsylvania with her sons when she had a lightbulb moment.

The board member of Columbia Public Library took her boys to Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, 219 E. Main St., Lititz, for a tour and thought perhaps the pretzel bakery and the library could collaborate so more people could enjoy the hands-on tour.

She brought the idea to library director Heather Beury, who worked with Sturgis general manager Michelle Curtis and owner Tim Snyder to create a pass that can be checked out of the Columbia Library entitling up to four people to a free tour of the bakery.

“Michelle brought up the idea of the collaboration to me, and I thought, ‘I go to the library all the time,’” Snyder said. “It’s a good idea.”

The Columbia library introduced the pass in September, and it will be available to check out from the day after Labor Day through the day before Memorial Day each year. It’s valid for up to four admissions and although it is housed in Columbia, it may be checked out for one week through any branch by anyone with a valid Lancaster County library card.

“The pass gives them a 25-minute historic tour and a pretzel twisting exercise,” Curtis said, explaining that the Sturgis bakery dates to 1861 and is the oldest commercial pretzel bakery in the country. “They get to hear the history of Julius and how he started the bakery. They get to twist a pretzel and learn the significance of the shape and the meaning behind it. They also get to learn all of the traditional processes we use.”

Lititz Trinity sets

hymn sing

Lititz Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 44 E. Orange St., Lititz, will host a hymn sing on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. in the newly renovated sanctuary. Attendees may join in congregational singing of well-known hymns, and organist Dan Foster will demonstrate features of the newly purchased Allen digital organ. For more information, call the church office at 717-626-2175.

The pass is the first collaboration of its kind between the bakery and a local library, Curtis shared. “I thought it was a great way to get people from the other side of the county over here,” she said. “It’s great to have them here to visit us.”

Beury is excited about people taking advantage of the pass. “It’s important to get people to explore their communities but also to offer an affordable option with those partnerships for people to be able to get out and do things together,” she commented. “It’s really a community partnership. We want to encourage people to get out and see what is in their community.”

The Columbia library has a similar partnership with the National Watch and Clock Museum, and both that pass and the pretzel pass are unique to the Columbia branch. The library also participates in museum pass programs for other locations throughout Lancaster County that are shared among other library branches.

Beury said the pass fits nicely with the mission of the library, which is to serve as a public resource.

“We launched STEM kits in the last year, manipulative kits in the last year,” she remarked. “We are underway with Millersville University to launch digital literacy classes. We’re a hub for the community.

Heather Beury (left) and Tim Snyder with the library pass at Julius Sturgis

Pretzel Bakery

We’re not just books anymore.”

She hopes the library’s community partnerships will continue to grow. “Our goal is always, ‘How can we do it better for the community?’” she said. “How can we serve the community better?”

Curtis encourages people to come to Sturgis for the tour, whether they visited as children and are coming back as adults or it’s their first time to the bakery.

“Bring your kids; get hands-on experience with history,” she said, noting that tourgoers receive a pretzel sample to snack on at the end of the tour. “And who doesn’t love pretzels?”

The pass requires a scheduled tour time and there are restrictions on its use, which are included in information distributed with the pass. For more information, visit https://columbiapubliclibrary.org.
