TLAMS students learn lessons that can’t be taught in classrooms
he act of giving back is a learned behavior. At Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS), community service is an unofficial part of the curriculum.
Not only did LAMS’ recent Serve-A-Thon Day unite students, faculty and parents in pursuit of a common goal, it also served as a way to instill a spirit of service in young people. The community give-back day is very much in line with what LAMS does and what the school is all about.
“It was difficult work where (the students) got to see the impact they were having and the impact that these ministries have,” said Lindsay Gabers, LAMS’ Serve-AThon coordinator. “It gave them an idea of how many services are out there. They learned about the importance of community
and the impact they can have. We know we are not called to go on this path alone. While they were at these places, the students were given tours and told what the ministries do. So there was an educational piece to this. Our mission is to provide a whole child approach to Christian education.”
As part of its Serve-A-Thon event, a group of 365 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, teachers, administrators and parents from LAMS performed service projects at 13 different sites in the Lititz, Ephrata, Akron, Leola and Mount Joy areas on Oct. 11. LAMS did its good works at ministries, nonprofits, parks, nursing homes, food banks and playgrounds.
“I would say there is a sense of joy when you serve others,” said Gabers. “It brings a joy that’s like
no other joy. It’s a stronger sense of joy and accomplishment. It teaches selflessness where the students are not expecting to get anything back for their service. I think it’s really empowering for the students. Some of the ministries are surprised by how much the kids can do.”
Assigned mostly by grades to different sites, the students performed age-appropriate work and acts of service. Some of the jobs that they tackled included painting, packaging and sorting, cleaning, doing special projects and planting.
“It gives us a designated day to live out our core values and help the community understand what LAMS is all about,” said Gabers. “We want to be a light in our community. It’s somewhat unique in that the whole school comes together to celebrate our

Music often makes occasions more festive. At Westminster Presbyterian Church, it makes services more blessed.
Westminster Presbyterian Church is hosting an extraordinary worship event built around special guest J.A.C. Redford. It’s a unique way to connect with God and music.
“We don’t just do music for
music’s sake,” said Frank Dodd, who’s been Westminster Presbyterian’s director of music and organist for five years. “We understand that God meets His people through an event like this. Music is a secondary feature; it is not the primary function. Preaching is the primary function, but music supports it.”

Playgrounds are designed to be safe spaces for kids to get outside, be active and, well, play. This one certainly fits that bill.
But the Tree House Playground at Lititz Church of the Brethren (LCOB) has unexpectedly morphed into something much more. In a very concrete way, it has cemented an already tight-knit Lititz community and made it even more cohesive.
“I think it’s such a community-type thing,” said Mike Enck, an LCOB parishioner and a member of the Lititz Tree House board. “The community got behind it, and the community stands behind it. We have a ton of people who help out there. It’s nice to see. We want people to keep

strong values. It shows the importance that the school puts on them. We want the community to have a greater understanding of LAMS’ mission and find out what the school is all about. It’s a wonderful school and a great part of our community. LAMS has been a Lititz staple for a long time.”
“This year, Serve-A-Thon was really fun,” said sixth-grader Leighton
Smith. “I’m glad that we got to show the community that we care about them and we got to show the love of Jesus through serving. Our class went to Handi-Vangelism Ministries International and learned about their awesome ministry for friends with special needs, and then we got to help paint and work around their facility to help them clean up. I can’t wait to serve again.”

coming back all the time.”
Located at LCOB, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, the 5-year-old Tree House Playground is two sprawling acres of fun, enjoyment and energy expenditure. The all-plastic compost structure is built on a rubber-based foundation and features four sliding boards, swings, a rock wall, a rope climb, monkey bars, zip lines, ramps and walkways.
The Tree House playground is
anchored by 455 18-inch posts.
Free and open to the public, the Tree House Playground includes separate playing areas for 2- to 4-year-olds and 5- to 7-year-olds. The place is handicapped-accessible.
“It’s one of the biggest playgrounds I know of,” Enck said. “It’s very colorful. This doesn’t have wood chips. With the rubber base, if kids fall, they’re not going to get
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.
Sincerely,
Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio
Located at 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz, LAMS was founded in 1978 and for 37 years the school sponsored a Trash-A-Thon event where students, faculty and parents came together to clean up local roads and streets. Last year, LAMS instituted the Serve-A-Thon as a replacement for Trash-A-Thon.
“It’s new in the sense that this service allows us to be more relational,”
said Gabers, “and it gives the students a little more purpose. But it’s still serving. Community service is important because we are called to serve one another and love one another. We want to share our time and talents with others. I think it gives us a purpose outside of ourselves.”

hurt. They’re going to bounce right back up.”
To say that the Tree House Playground has been well received by the Lititz community and beyond would be an understatement. On any given day, when the weather is right, more than 300 children can be observed playing there.
“It starts at 8 in the morning and goes until dusk,” said Enck. “It’s getting so well known that we have busloads of kids from all over Lancaster County coming here to play. When you go out there as an adult and see the kids playing, it almost makes you want to go out there with them. It’s that unique. It’s that cool. We’ve had to move some things around for parents to play.”
“It brings everybody from Lititz there, and you forget about other things,” continued Enck. “When you’re there, you have a different attitude. Once you visit the playground and see the kids playing, it kind of touches you.”
Construction of the Tree House Playground began in the spring of 2019, and the community project caused local business and private donors to step up and helpful volunteers to turn out.
A combination of more than 150 LCOB parishioners and community members worked on the construction of the project, which cost more than several hundred thousand dollars to complete. Much of the money for the Tree House Playground was raised through

The 75-minute performance will also feature liturgy, Scripture readings, two new pieces of music specifically composed by Redford for the event and a performance of “The Ancient of Days,” Redford’s dramatic music narrative of Daniel 7.
An hour before the concert, Redford will share his journey of faith and the highlights of his life’s work with the audience.

The event is free to attend, and a good will offering to benefit Westminster Presbyterian’s music series will be accepted.
“It’s going to be quite an evening,” said Dodd. “We want to worship God; we want to do it through music, and we want to go beyond what we do on a Sunday morning. It’s taking us out of our norms. This is Westminster’s first Evensong worship service. People have been asking for an event like this for a while. We have done some hybrid worship services before, but this is the first one where we’re going to have a conductor directing music he has composed.”
Redford will be conducting a choir and brass quintet that consists of a pair of trumpets, a trombone, a tuba, a horn, a percussionist and Dodd on the organ. A world-renowned composer, orchestrator and conductor, Redford has produced music scores for films like “The Mighty Ducks,” “Newsies,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Perfect Storm” and TV series like “Coach” and “St. Elsewhere.” He has collaborated with artists like Adele, Sting and Steven Curtis Chapman.
“He has made his career from not just writing music, but also conducting the music for its recording,” said Dodd. “J.A.C. has been very gracious. We thought we were going out on a limb asking him to write this music for us, and
