HOHC harnesses power of Christmas to spread word about its services
BY JEFF FALK
Knowledge is power and empowering. Knowledge leads to understanding, and understanding lays the groundwork for empathy.
With its upcoming event, House of His Creation (HOHC) seeks to impart knowledge about what it is and exactly what it does.
“I think people are starting to know who we are,” said Michelle Gibbs, who’s been HOHC’s executive director since August,
“House of His Creation is not a shelter; it’s a family living environment.”
replacing Matt Neff. “We’ve been in existence for 51 years, but because we’re in a new location (for three years), I don’t think people know we’re here. We’re a home, a place that provides for women and children. We want to create some awareness of House of His Creation and bring people to the home.”
A safe space that provides services and support for pregnant women and mothers with newborns, HOHC will host its inaugural Festive Christmas House Tour and Charity Donation Drive at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz, from 6 to 8 p.m. on both Thursday, Dec. 12, and Friday, Dec. 13. Visitors will be afforded an opportunity to meet Gibbs, the organization’s house parents and
HOHC board members.
The event is free to attend, and light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the tour.
“We are going to have this house decorated inside and out and looking very festive,” said Gibbs. “This used to be a bed-andbreakfast before we purchased it, and it’s always nice during the holidays to see beautiful homes. I want people to be wowed by what’s going on here. I’m hoping

Organizers of HOHC’s Festive Christmas House Tour and Charity Donation Drive are hoping that a total of 100 members of the Lititz community and surrounding communities will attend the two-night event.
“I love Christmas and the decorations,” Gibbs said. “I just think it’s the perfect time for an event

Christmas is a very historic holiday, a very historic time of the year.
Lititz is a very historic town, a very historic place.
The Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) is hosting a pair of upcoming events over three days that will honor the Christmas season and celebrate the holiday’s history and tradition.
“We want to show visitors what Christmas was like in Lititz 200 years ago,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, who’s been LHF’s president for 11 years.
“(Back then) families were close together. They did not put a tree inside the house. They gave each other handmade gifts. They
went to church on Christmas Day, not the day before.”
On Thursday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz, LHF will present its annual

Dyslexia is something that we might not fully understand. Dyslexia may be something we don’t talk enough about. Dyslexia might be more prevalent than we realize.
It’s a learning disorder that Children’s Dyslexia Center (CDC) of Lancaster can help manage and, in some instances, even overcome.
“What everyone needs to
understand is that (dyslexia is) neurological, it runs in families and it affects language processing,” said Heather Brown, who’s been CDC of Lancaster’s director for 10 years. “What it’s not is reading backwards. It’s about how kids process language, how the brain processes language. Words and sentences look the same, but it’s daunting to read. Students work so hard to get through paragraphs that by the end of them they don’t remember

Free Christmas dinner will feature food and fellowship
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of Ruhl’s Church believe food and fellowship go hand in hand with their mission of spreading God’s love. With that in mind, the church will host a free dine-in Christmas dinner on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. The dinner will be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
The meal will be served buffet-style and will feature baked ham, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert. During the dinner, guests will be invited to sing along to some traditional Christmas carols.
“Years ago, Ruhl’s Church held a Christmas Eve Eve celebration on Dec. 23 and served a free sit-down ham dinner,” said church member
Kris Gray. “We continued the tradition for a few years until the pandemic changed the venue to a drive-through meal in 2020 along with the ‚ÄòDrive to Bethlehem’ with scenes from the real Christmas story.”
That event was very well received over the past few years, she said, adding, “Because of the overwhelming positive responses from those attending the event, we continued to hold it yearly through Christmas 2023.”
Still, the church members missed the opportunity a sit-down meal provided for socializing and community.
“We wanted to welcome people to return inside the church and enjoy some sweet fellowship over a delicious meal,” Gray shared.

like this. Christmastime is when people want to help and donate. The giving time of Christmas brings joy to people’s hearts.”
Initially established in Coatesville in 1973, HOHC has been part of the Lititz community for more than 20 years.
HOHC has the capacity to serve and care for up to four women and their infants at a time, and currently three women are residing there. HOHC’s program, which typ -
ically can take six to nine months to complete, is geared toward parenting skills.
“House of His Creation is God’s house,” said Gibbs. “When women come here, the expectation is that they feel God’s presence. House of His Creation is not a shelter; it’s a family living environment. We are a life-affirming ministry. Ultimately, it’s not their permanent residence, but women connect here. Even when women leave here, they stay
“With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is a blessing to be able to relax over a meal with friends.”
She also extended an invitation to the community to attend the church’s traditional Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
“We hope you can join us as we
celebrate the true reason for the Christmas season - our Savior’s birth,” she said.

Gibbs and her staff of three employees are supported by an extensive network of nearly 100 volunteers. HOHC’s humanitarian work is funded through donations from churches and individuals and small government grants.
“When House of His Creation was founded, a huge part of what it did was adoption,” said Gibbs. “It
was a safe haven for women who were pregnant. Over the years, the way adoption is viewed has changed. It’s more accepted now, and women have more of a voice. We want to value these women and help them on their journey of motherhood. They need help. They need support. They need guidance.”

There is no charge for the event, but a freewill offering will be received. A separate children’s clothing closet outreach will also be held during the breakfast.

Families invited to sign up for dinner giveaway
The 38th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with Giant Foods and United Way of Lancaster to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 21.
The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by Friday, Dec. 13, by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341. Volunteers will deliver the meals.
The project anticipates distrib -
uting approximately 2,700 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County during the holiday season.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue the partnership with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the rising costs of the groceries for the food boxes. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made at www.lcpn.org.
The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers.
Christmas Carol Sing. The community event is free to attend, but freewill donations will be accepted.
The Moravian Trombone Choir will be there performing holiday classics, and attendees can sing along with family members, neighbors and friends. When the music concludes, everyone is welcome inside the church’s fellowship hall for light refreshments.
“Generally speaking, the events are designed to promote the history of the Lititz area,” said Van Brookhoven. “Things were done differently 200 years ago versus the way they are today. The atmosphere is festive, and it’s historic.”
The Christmas Carol Sing has been conducted in Lititz around the holidays for about 20 years now.
From 5 to 8 p.m. on both Friday, Dec. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 14, LHF will present its annual Christmas Candlelight Tours of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House, 127-139 Main St., Lititz. The 40-minute tours depart every 15 minutes, and tickets can be purchased at www. lititzhistoricalfoundation.com prior to the event or next door at the LHF Museum the day of the event, if tickets remain.
With candles serving as the only source of lumination, guests will learn the story of Johannes Mueller and his family, as well as the customs and history of the Lititz Moravian community in the 18th
century. There will be tour guides present in each room providing information and insight.
Ticketholders will be treated to holiday refreshments after the tours and will receive discounts on items purchased at LHF Museum’s gift shop.
“People love to learn about local history,” said Van Brookhoven. “They’re surprised by how people lived 200 years ago, without electricity and the internet.”
In addition to its two Christmas events, LHF conducts between 18 and 23 fundraisers and community gatherings each year. LHF was established in 1951.
“As a nonprofit, we’re always looking to raise funds,” said Van Brookhoven. “Our mission is to promote and preserve Lititz area history by offering tours and fundraisers. We have many artifacts on display in our museum.”
the meaning. You have to break the reading
We teach kids how to break that code, so it frees the brain up.”
Located at 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, CDC of Lancaster teaches school-age children with dyslexia from Lancaster, Dauphin, York, Chester and Lebanon counties how to read, write and spell. Much of the work is performed in one-onone settings after school.
CDC of Lancaster also trains adults how to tutor kids with dyslexia. All of its services are provided free of charge.
“(The number of people affected
by dyslexia is) a hard number to quantify,” said Brown. “It’s estimated that between 10% and 20% of the population has some form of dyslexia. I’d say that half of our parents are undiagnosed dyslexics. But only 8% of the population is getting tested.”
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the literacy rate among adults in the United States is 79%.
CDC of Lancaster, which employs about a dozen instructors, works with about 20 kids with some form of dyslexia each semester, or about 40 per year.
“They come here after a day of school and push through an hour of hard tutoring,” said Brown. “For a lot of our kids, it takes them two or three times longer to read than their peers. When they see how easy it is for their peers, it becomes frustrating. They’re on the same level, but they’re putting forth so much more effort. But you need to read to succeed. We accomplish our goals by putting one step in front of the other every day. We teach kids how to be confident readers and writers.”
“Most of our students are born with dyslexia, so it can be hereditary,” Brown continued. “It’s neurological. It’s how we’re born. Somebody can be really good at math and others not as good. It’s the same with reading. For some kids, it takes longer to read. There are even different kinds of dyslexia. We teach kids the steps to overcome the challenges with dyslexia.”
A regional organization associated with the Scottish Rite of Masons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, CDC operates more than 40 centers in 13 states in New England, Pennsylvania, Ohio and parts of the Midwest. Since being established in 2002, CDC of Lancaster has helped more than 260 kids with dyslexia, 150 of whom have graduated from its program.
“The science behind this isn’t fancy,” said Brown. “It’s breaking down the reading code, and a lot of it hasn’t changed. We want to build confidence in our students so they can succeed. We teach the why behind language to make meaning of it.”
CDC of Lancaster performs its work independently and is not associated with any public or private schools.
“It costs money to treat (dyslexia), and it’s expensive,” said Brown. “The good news is that Pennsylvania is starting to recognize it and they’re starting to teach the science of reading. They are requiring reading teachers to take classes in the science of reading.”
“I wish we didn’t exist,” Brown added. “I wish we didn’t have to have a Children’s Dyslexia Center because schools were teaching their students with dyslexia.”

Moravian church sets Advent Tea, Christmas Vigil
Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz, has planned two Christmas events.
Moravian stars for purchase.
Meeting to feature harpist, cookie exchange
The church will host its annual Advent Tea on Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 3 p.m. Hot beverages, Moravian sugar cake, and baked goods will be available in the fellowship hall and surrounding rooms. Music will be provided by a string ensemble from Lititz Academy of Music.
New this year, the church will host a Maker’s Market, including jewelry, painted shell ornaments, and items made through needle felting. In addition, attendees may browse vintage earrings, vintage jewelry, gently used books and CDs, and fresh greens and arrangements. All vendors will be on the first floor adjacent to the fellowship hall or in the back lobby.
The Putz will be presented every half hour beginning at noon, with the last showing at 2:30 p.m.
The Moravian Mission Gift Shop, located across the street from the Advent Tea, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will offer Christmas gifts and
The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to offset the costs, and all funds raised will go to local and global charities. The event is handicapped-accessible.
The congregation will also hold its Christmas Vigil on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, and Sunday, Dec. 22, at 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, at 5 and 7 p.m. The candlelight vigil features the traditional Moravian Lovefeast and music performed by the Lititz Moravian Church choir and orchestra. There is a limit of five tickets per person.
To request tickets, which are free, mail a self-addressed stamped envelope to Lititz Moravian Congregation, Attn.: Vigil Tickets, 8 Church Square, Lititz, PA, 17543. Individuals requesting tickets should include the preferred vigil date and time as well as a second choice, along with their phone number.
Tickets can also be requested at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Lititz Moravian Christmas Vigil Service.” People can print the tickets at home and then bring their ticket or phone copy to the session they will be attending.
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
Mary Stoltzfus will help the group celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with harp music and Scripture. Mary and her husband, Jared, live in Manheim and attend Chiques Church. Mary has been playing harp for 20 years.
In keeping with the Christmas spirit, there will also be a cookie exchange. Attendees may bring a cookie and take a cookie home or bring a dozen cookies and take a dozen home.
During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
Old Zion Church plans carol sing
Old Zion Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Lititz, will hold its annual carol sing on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. The historic church will be lit by candles, and fresh greens will be hung.
The carol sing will be led by the Brethren Heritage Singers. This ensemble was established around 1990 and included musicians from Chiques Church of the Brethren and the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. The group has sung in churches throughout Pennsylvania, as well as Indiana and North Carolina.
In addition to leading and accom-
panying the congregation in singing well-known carols, the Brethren Heritage Singers will perform special Christmas music.
The event offers an opportunity to experience the Christmas season of a bygone era. Old Zion Church was built in 1813 and has been maintained close to its original state without modern conveniences of heat, electricity, or indoor plumbing.
The carol sing is free to attend, but advance reservations are required, with a maximum of six tickets per request. Tickets may be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Old Zion Church, P.O. Box 103, Lititz, PA 17543, or by emailing oldzionchurch@gmail.com.
Attendees are advised to dress warmly and bring along a flashlight for reading the sheet music and navigating in and around the church. For safety reasons, if there is ice or snow on the ground on Dec. 14, the event will be canceled; for updates, visit www.oldzionchurch.org.
