County Courthouses Offer Instructions On How To Obtain A Marriage License

The Clerk of Orphans’ Court and/or the Register of Wills within each individual county in Pennsylvania handles information, forms, and the actual registering of marriage license applications. Both individuals must appear in person together to complete (and file) the application for marriage. Fees vary by county and must be paid in cash only. Social Security number and valid photo identification are required for both parties. The medical examination and blood test are no longer required. Age requirements are in effect. Individuals 18 years of age (male and female) may apply as legal adults in Pennsylvania. If either party is under 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed. Also, the applicant must present his or her official birth certificate and pay an additional fee. If under age 16, the approval of a judge of the Orphans’ Court, as well as the consent of a parent or legal guardian, is necessary. Additional fees may be assessed. Applicants who have been previously married must provide the following information concerning the dissolution of the most recent marriage: divorces - must present a certified copy of the decree (if maiden name has been resumed, must present that document); annulments - the same information as is required for divorces; and widowed - the date of death of the deceased spouse is needed. Blood relatives down to and including first cousins may not marry under Pennsylvania law. A marriage license becomes valid on the third day following application or the next business day if the third day falls on a weekend or holiday. The license is valid for 60 days from the third day following the date of application. The wedding ceremony need not be performed in the county in which the license was issued. However, an out-of-state marriage license cannot be used in Pennsylvania, nor can a Pennsylvania marriage license be used in another state. Details, courthouse locations, and other information for separate counties in the area are listed below. The office of the Clerk of Orphans’ Court in each county handles marriage licenses. It is requested that applicants appear at least one-half hour before the close of the business day to allow sufficient time to complete the application. All courthouse office hours listed are Monday through

Friday. Details are available on the county’s government Web site; by calling the phone number for the Clerk of Orphans’ Court Office (some counties also offer a number for a recorded message of instructions); or in person Monday through Friday during regular business hours, at least one-half hour before closing time. To view a complete listing of all county Web sites in Pennsylvania, log on to www.pa.gov/portal/server.pt/ community/quick_government_resources/3070. Certain classic pieces will always be in style for weddings, but each year brides are met with ideas that borrow concepts from mainstream fashion and can provide a welcome twist to a wedding wardrobe. There are many exciting options in store for brides this year in terms of jewelry and accessories. Vintage-inspired jewelry: Create a romantic look with delicate but ornate swags of pearls and crystal in choker-length necklaces. Button or drop earrings with crystal and ďŹ ligree also offer a vintage feel. Pearls, pearls, pearls: Now more than ever, pearls are a classic and fashionable favorite for brides. They're chic not only in white, but also in pinks and metallics, both for the bride and the bridal party. For a change, look for genuine cultured freshwater pearls, which are affordable and

elegant. Statement pieces: Create drama by wearing a choker with open-work oral designs decorated in crystal. Or place an ornate crystal and pearl pin or combs in the hair to complement a look. Long, linear earrings: Earrings have become more dramatic. Short-to-medium single strand drops with crystal and pearl are in style. Linear earrings elongate the neckline and create a slimming vertical line to the face. Bridal party gifts: Studying jewelry trends isn't just useful for choosing the wedding party wardrobe. Noticing what's in fashion helps inspire unique bridal party gifts, such as sterling silver bangles for special wedding helpers and the bridal party.

The Perfect Wedding Gown L

aura Rosenberg, a lawyer in Philadelphia, could not stop thinking about the very first dress she tried on when she began searching for her dream gown shortly after her engagement last year. It was simple and strapless with a dropped waist. But she says she couldn't believe finding the perfect wedding dress could be that easy, so she trekked to four more shops and tried on 25 others, only to finally settle on her first love. The best part: It was under her budget. The truth is that finding a wedding gown that makes you feel like a princess does not have to be stressful. In fact, it can be a whole lot of fun - if you know the secrets of navigating the sea of bridal salons, designers, and outlets. Even better, your dream wedding gown does not have to cost a fortune. Finding the right dress is a lot like finding Mr. Right. Many of the same rules apply: It's all about the right fit. Most likely, you have fantasized about your wedding dress from the time you were a little girl. But now that you're actually getting married, you probably feel overwhelmed by all the choices

- and unsure of what looks best on your body type. You should start your search by scouring bridal magazines and Web sites for photos of all different types of dresses. Keep a file of all the styles that are appealing to you, and bring those images with you when you go to a bridal salon or dress shop. Use magazine and online sources to find suggestions for bridal salons in your area, but also ask friends and family members for referrals. Then, make appointments at a few of the shops. You can bring mom and the maid of honor to the appointment. But do not bring too many people because it's ultimately your decision. Try on various styles to see what looks best and use those images you pulled as a guide. You may want to bring a pair of shoes that are about the same height as the ones you'd like to wear on your wedding day, but keep in mind that alterations are done after you pick a gown. "We also recommend that you ask the person assisting you at the salon to select two or three gowns that she or he thinks would look good on you - even if they aren't what you had in mind," says Rosanna McCollough, editor in chief of an online wedding resource. "The staff members work with brides and gowns every day and have an excellent eye for what flatters." Good manners and charm count. The gown you select should also reflect the formality of your reception. If you are having an evening reception with more than 200 guests, then you can opt for a floor-length dress with a long cathedral train. But daytime or semiformal brides should choose simpler dresses with chapel- or sweep-length trains that are shorter. It should make you feel like a million bucks. Most people cannot afford a custom-made Christian Dior Haute Couture dress like the one Melania Knauss wore when she wed Donald Trump. But that does not mean you have to forego designer gowns altogether. Keep an eye out for trunk shows or sample sales held at bridal salons in your area. An older-style gown or one that's been previously tried on at a show or sale can be just the gem you're looking for - and it will cost much less. "Consider wearing a designer bridesmaid gown in ivory or white, which can make a simple yet stunning wedding dress," says McCollough. Simple is the key word. Avoiding lots of beading or sequins, which require lots of detail from seamstresses,

19

2011 Wedding Planner can keep the price of your dress down. You can also settle for a silk blend instead of pure silk. Making concessions and being flexible will help you keep your budget in check. And you can certainly consider designer knockoffs or bridal outlets, which sell off-the-rack gowns for a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand. Never settle for less than the best. No matter what your budget, you should always pay attention to the quality of the gown. Look closely at the dress to make sure the seams are straight, and any beads, sequins, or details are fastened tightly. There should be no loose threads. And the hems - particularly after you've been fitted - should stay in place even after a firm tug. You have to walk down an aisle, dance, and spend an entire day - one of the most important days of your life - in the dress. It should be durable and fit you well. Once you pick a dress, it has to be ordered (unless it's offthe-rack or a sample). When it arrives, you will go through three to four fittings. Schedule your last dress fitting one week before your wedding day. Often, because of nerves, brides tend to lose or gain a little bit of weight just before the big day. So it's important to test the fit as close to your wedding date as possible. Plus, this way the shop or tailor will hold your dress until almost the last minute - and you don't have to worry about getting anything on it or having your husband-to-be see it before the wedding. Shopping for a wedding gown can be stress free and even within your budget if you know where to look and what to look for. Let bridal salon assistants help you choose a dress that is flattering to your figure, but make sure you don't let others influence your final decision.

Preserve Your Dress Properly Once the wedding is over, what will you do to preserve your beautiful, expensive dress? It is wise to ask your bridal shop or wedding consultant in advance for the name of a gown preservationist. Many dry cleaners claim to clean wedding gowns, but most are not experts in preservation. There are two cleaning methods used by preservationists. Some use the wet cleaning method, which entails washing the dress by hand with a mild cleanser. This removes visible and invisible stains (champagne and sugar). Other companies use the dry cleaning method, where stains are pre-treated and then put in a dry cleaning machine. Once the dress is cleaned, it is wrapped in white, acid-free tissue paper or unbleached muslin. Then the wrapped dress is placed in an acid-free or paperboard box. Sometimes the box has a viewing window of acetate. Store the box out of direct light to keep the dress from becoming yellow. Having your gown cleaned and packaged by a reputable preservationist generally costs between $200 and $400. Before sending your dress off to be done, ask if the work is done on site. Also find out if you have to sign a disclaimer. Some companies will not be held responsible for damage done during the preservation processes. You should always seek out a preservationist who will guarantee her or his work. If hiring a professional doesn't fit into your budget so soon after the wedding, there are things you can do at home to prolong the life of your gown in the meantime. Carefully wrap your wedding dress in unbleached muslin or a white sheet, then store it in a sturdy box under your bed until you can take your gown to a preservationist.

How To Decide On Bridesmaids’ Dresses Finding the best dresses for your bridesmaids can be a difficult task. Many brides are now choosing a color and then allowing their bridesmaids to select the best dress style for their bodies. There is a reason many women laugh when bridesmaids' dresses are mentioned. For some reason brides who choose exquisite wedding gowns often seem to have no fashion sense when selecting dresses for their attendants. Some speculate that hideous bridesmaids' dresses ensure no one else can appear more beautiful than the bride. Others believe it's a power play. A wedding is one of the few times in your life when you will have a chance to dictate what your friends wear for a special occasion. Think about the following factors carefully when choosing bridesmaids' dresses. Flattering Their Figures Some brides choose a color and let every attendant wear a different dress style. This is a wise decision when you are trying to dress some women who are petite and others who are plus size or very tall. Your friends will be grateful if you let them wear a dress that complements their face and figure rather than forcing them to wear a dress that is not flattering to their body type. Pastel colors tend to look best on blondes and fair-skinned brunettes, but the wrong hue can make redheads and olive-skinned brunettes look too washed out. Look for shades that are flattering to all complexions or let your bridesmaids wear different colors. Figure types can make or break a dress. Keep in mind that strapless gowns can be a challenge for both petite and plus-size women, and modest types often feel uncomfortable wearing backless styles. Matching Your Gown Try to select bridesmaids' dresses that will complement your wedding gown. If you are wearing a slinky, column-style gown, it will look odd if your bridesmaids are wearing frilly Victorian-style dresses. If the dresses are being tailored or hand-sewn you might want to have similar beading or lace sewn on your wedding gown and the bridesmaids' dresses for a more coordinated look. Matching accessories like gloves or hats can help create a unified look if your attendants are wearing different dress styles.

Budget If you are asking your bridesmaids to pay for their frocks, do not put them into a bind by insisting they wear dresses that will strain their finances. Try to select styles that are beautiful without too many busy details such as bulky layers and big bows. Your bridesmaids will be very happy if you choose a dress they can wear again later for other special occasions. If the gown has too many adornments that can't be removed later, chances are it will never be worn again. Simple styles like a slip dress or sheath can easily be worn again if teamed with a shrug or dressy jacket. Flower Girl Make sure you choose a dress that is appropriate for the flower girl's age and body type. A skirt that is too long or full might cause a younger child to trip and fall. Pick a dress that coordinates with the bridesmaids' dresses and your color scheme, but find a style that will be cute and comfortable. Ordering the Dresses Bridesmaids' dresses are available at bridal shops, but you should also consider looking for dresses at department stores, boutiques, and formalwear shops. You may choose a pattern and fabric and have the dresses sewn by a professional seamstress. If the dresses are being hand-sewn, you have a better chance of fitting each bridesmaid perfectly, but you will need to allow more time. If you order gowns from a bridal shop, be prepared to make a deposit. Most shops wait to order the dresses until all sizes and deposits are in. If one of your attendants is short on cash and holding up the order, you should make the deposit for her and let her pay you back later, or give her the opportunity to bow out. Select your bridesmaids' dresses several months before the wedding to allow time for ordering the gowns, fittings, and alterations. Make sure all bridesmaids have another fitting a few days before the wedding. If anyone has gained or lost weight, adjustments may be needed. Copyright © 2008 Publishers-Edge

Best Flowers

The

For Your Wedding

W

hen it comes to planning your wedding, the flowers are an important consideration. They add color, texture, and fragrance to your ceremony and are a reflection of your personality. Ardith Beveridge, the director of a floristry institute in Minneapolis, Minn., said that you should be prepared for the florist to ask if the bridesmaids have their dresses. When selecting flowers, it is important to choose colors that will work with the color of their dresses. Secondly, make sure you have your wedding date selected before visiting a florist, because the date of the wedding will determine the cost of the flowers, due to the growing season of the flowers you desire. The florist will also ask the bride about the style of the wedding – whether it’s a formal, evening wedding or a more casual, afternoon wedding. “For a more formal wedding, the bride may wear a long train and therefore would carry a longer, more cascading bouquet,” Beveridge said. Most brides decide what colors they want first, and then they go on to the specific flower they have in mind. The florist should help the bride decide on the texture of her bouquet. “Different combinations of flowers ensure good texture,” Beveridge said. “The florist needs to remind the bride that she’s really choosing flowers for photography and videography. The bouquet needs to be three-dimensional or it won’t photograph well. For example, a big bouquet of white roses may look beautiful in person, but in the pictures and on the video, it will just look like a big, white ball.” It’s important that a bridal bouquet be proportionate to the physical size of the bride, Beveridge said. “The width should be inside hip bone to inside hip bone, and the length should be navel to knee.” The same holds true for bridesmaids’ flowers. “Your 12-year-old niece and your sister who plays basketball need to have different sized bouquets,” Beveridge said. “Talk to your florist about customizing. You don’t want your little niece with a huge bunch of flowers that she has to drag down the aisle.” The groom’s boutonniere is traditionally a flower taken from the bride’s bouquet. The mothers’ corsages are often pin-ons or wrist corsages, but

lately more people have been opting for a hand-held corsage to eliminate pin damage on an expensive dress. Although the choice of flower varies greatly from bride to bride, Beveridge said tropical flowers, such as birds-of-paradise or orchids, are very popular. “They’re not as expensive as you might think, because you only use one or two,” she said. “Orchids, for example, are put in with more casual flowers now, and it makes a beautiful bouquet.” Also consider how to use flowers during the reception. Beveridge suggests rather than having the same floral design on every table, have the same flowers but several different designs. “It helps make the wedding so much more personal, and it gets people moving around the room because they want to see the different arrangements,” she said. And, when the bride and groom are about to leave, the bride can pull out an extra floral surprise. “The florist can take about 12 accent flowers with a little foliage attached to each and tie them all together with a ribbon so it looks like a regular bouquet,” Beveridge said. “When the bride is ready to toss her ‘bouquet,’ she pulls the ribbon and tosses, and 12 little bouquets go out into the crowd. People don’t expect that at all. It’s really fun.” Sherry Reinking, vice president of a flower company in Fort Wayne, Ind., has been in the floral business for 42 years and does between 80 and 100 weddings every year. She said when it comes to wedding themes, there is no such thing as "usual." “Vintage weddings are popular right now, ranging from styles from the 1800s to the 1930s and '40s,” Reinking said. “And I’ve been to bridal shows where they demonstrated futuristic styles. It really runs the gamut.” Reinking said brides are often looking for flowers with vibrant, bright colors, such as Gerbera daisies. The bouquet styles are also varied and depend on the bride’s taste. “A bride with a full skirt and a long veiled train will usually opt for the presentation style, which she carries lying across her arm,” Reinking said. Other bouquet types include the wand style, in which the flower stems are extended about 18 inches and trimmed decoratively; and the ever-popular cascade. “I still have three or four out of every 10 weddings I do in which the bride wants the cascade,” Reinking said. “It never goes out of style.” Copyright © 2006 Publishers-Edge

! ! % " ! ! # ((( Working with the orist will most likely be an enjoyable experience while planning your wedding. Florists often have great ideas to help design the owers at your wedding ceremony and reception. One of the worst mistakes to make is not asking for ideas and advice from the orist you choose to supply your wedding. Contacting your orist: If you are having a large wedding, you should contact your orist at least six months prior to the wedding. Three to four months should be sufďŹ cient if your wedding is small to medium in size or if you are using silk owers. Information your orist needs from you: They will need to know the size of your wedding party and what facilities they need to decorate for your wedding ceremony and reception. You will need to identify what colors you are using in your wedding. If you have selected your attendants’ dresses, you should bring a sample of the dress with you. If you have seen an example of bouquets you like, be sure to bring a picture with you when you meet with the orist. Examples give the orist an idea of your taste and will help them design something that is uniquely yours. If you haven’t seen something in magazines that suits your taste, most orists have a good selection of design books that have various oral designs for your special day. Make sure to forward an itinerary of the wedding day to your orist so that arrangements can be made for delivery and set up for the church and the reception hall. As a precaution, it is also a good idea to check with your attendants to make sure they are not allergic to certain kinds of fresh owers. Copyright Š 2008 Publishers-Edge

Destination weddings combine the nuptial ceremony with the honeymoon. Resorts and tourism bureaus may be able to offer the adventurous bride and groom package deals to make their dream wedding as simple and affordable as possible.

Destination weddings have become more popular than ever in recent years as couples opt to combine their nuptials with a honeymoon. Resorts and tourism bureaus are encouraging the trend by offering complimentary wedding coordinators and package deals to make the process as simple and affordable as possible. Las Vegas continues to be a popular spot for quick, no hassle weddings. Many chapels in the city offer package deals including the officiant, flowers and photography. Several of the resorts have wedding chapels and packages that include receptions. You can have the simplest ceremony possible or arrange for a more traditional wedding with an elaborate reception. Bermuda is a popular choice for couples living on the East Coast. With its pink beaches surrounded by turquoise water, postcard sunsets, and a variety of quaint accommodations, it offers the perfect combination of romance, gourmet dining and outdoor activities. There are no blood tests or health certificates required, but couples must publish a notice of intended marriage in the Bermuda newspaper and present copies of divorce decrees if they have been previously married. Jamaica and The Bahamas are two of the more popular Caribbean destinations for weddings, but there are many island countries to choose from, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Martinique. St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix are popular destinations in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both religious and civil ceremonies are performed, and the legal requirements are less cumbersome than on some other islands since they are territories of the U.S. Mexico offers numerous resorts that cater to couples seeking to combine a wedding and honeymoon. Whether you choose the beautiful beaches of Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, or a more historic location like Mexico City, the experience is certain to be memorable. Europe has become increasingly popular as a wedding destination over the last few years. There are plenty of charming spots in Italy, Spain, Portugal, England, and France guaranteed Printed by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

to be romantic and affordable. Some couples choose e a country in Europe because of family ties to a particc-rr-ular region. Others may simply prefer a historic or ard-tistic setting. Be sure to plan your wedding well in ady vance and adhere to legal requirements in the country you choose. Destination weddings in the United States are also quite popular. Florida is a top choice for those who dream of a fairytale wedding at Disney World followed by a honeymoon on sunny beaches. The Orlando and Miami areas offer a ton of activities for honeymooning couples who want to laze on the beach or visit amusement parks during the day and dance the night away at trendy nightclubs. Hawaii is one of the most popular sites in the world for beach weddings. Whether you choose to hold your ceremony on Oahu, Maui, or Kauai, there is an abundance of chapels and wedding services to choose from. On the mainland, there are as many choices as there are states. You can have your wedding in the snow of Alaska or at a cliff-side resort in California, and there are a host of other popular choices, including Sedona, Ariz.; Steamboat, Colo.; historic Boston, Mass.; and the scenic Poconos of Pennsylvania. New York state offers the beauty of Central Park, stately Manhattan churches, the beachside charm of the Hamptons, or upstate resorts with views of the Catskill Mountains. By traveling further up the East Coast, you can have a sailboat wedding on Cape Cod or be married on a historic estate in Rhode Island or Maine. Before you choose a destination, establish a budget, then determine how far you can travel and how many days you have available. Consider how many guests you

want to invite and whether or not your guests can afford to fly to the destination. Can you afford to pay for some of their travel expenses? Some resort hotels offer discounted rates for wedding guests, and you may be able to negotiate a group rate with an airline. Be sure to thoroughly investigate the legal requirements, such as how long you must be in the country before you can marry, which documents you must bring, whether blood tests are required, and the fees you’ll be charged for the license and ceremony. Give your guests plenty of advance notice and make sure R.S.V.P. cards are returned by a specified date. You will need an exact count of how many people will be attending as you proceed with the wedding and reception plans. Take advantage of complimentary planning services offered by resorts and tourism bureaus. If the resort does not have a wedding coordinator, consider hiring a wedding planner in the area to help you make arrangements. The tourism office may also be able to answer questions you have regarding ceremony locations, reception sites, etc. Copyright © 2007 Publishers-Edge

Love The Second Time Around

Classical & Jazz Music A Specialty

Many couples thinking of marriage may have previously taken a trip down the aisle. Second and third weddings are more common these days than ever before. According to www.idotaketwo.com, nearly 50 percent of all marriages are second weddings for at least one partner - if not both. Therefore, many wonder what is proper wedding etiquette for an encore marriage. Actually, no rules are set in stone. It is up to the couple to plan a ceremony and reception that ďŹ t their needs and comfort levels. While some couples choose to elope or have a very intimate service, others treat themselves to an elaborate wedding, even inviting their children to participate in the ceremony. Here are some tips to guide you if you are having difďŹ culty deciding on the wedding that is right for you: When it comes to the ceremony, the choice is yours. Consider your religious afďŹ liations, personalities, ďŹ nances and family customs and plan accordingly. Whether you choose a small service or a lavish affair, all is acceptable. Wardrobes can be as varied as the ceremony and party. In the past, white gowns signiďŹ ed purity and were appropriate only for ďŹ rst-time brides. Not anymore. If you want to wear white, go for it. However, many encore brides choose to wear colored gowns or even a pantsuit in lieu of a gown. Grooms can be formal in a tuxedo or casual in a dinner jacket and slacks. A second-time bride may choose to be "given away" by a father, brother or friend. It is also perfectly acceptable for her to walk down the aisle solo. The bride and groom can host their own affair, but parents on either side may choose to ďŹ nancially contribute.

The Story of

Bridal Veils W

ho would've thought a thin piece of lace or tulle could truly make a bride look and feel like she is getting married? Veils have remained an important part of wedding-day attire for centuries. Veils date back to ancient Greeks and Romans, who used them to fend off evil spirits and demons. Their thinking was that the evil spirits would not be able to get to the person behind the veil, hence keeping her safe for her husband. In the late 18th century in America, veils became quite popular. Aides to George Washington saw his stepgranddaughter, Nellie, sitting by a lace-curtained window and remarked on her stunning beauty. Nellie re-created the scene at her wedding by making a veil of white lace. Today's brides still take part in the tradition of the veil, but add their own spin on the accessory. Veils typically correspond to the color of the gown. White represents the ultimate purity of the bride. A veil can be whatever you want it to be, from simple and understated to extravagant and detailed. It can also be any length, from cascading beyond the wedding train to ending at the bride's elbow. No matter what you choose in a veil, it should complement your overall look without competing with your gown. A fancy veil will be too much for a detailed gown, but you can embellish a plain dress with a detailed veil. When selecting veils, it helps if you have an image of your gown in mind. Some dress shops also specialize in veils, so you may be able to try on your gown with different veils to compare looks. It is also wise to style your hair and makeup similar to how you will wear them on your wedding day when trying on veils. This way you can experience the full effect. When observing yourself in the veil, try it on in front of a fulllength mirror, and view yourself from all angles. A veil may look attering from the front, but may not complement the back of your gown. Don't forget to walk around the house or dress shop in your veil, especially if you are choosing one of considerable length. This way you can grow accustomed to maneuvering with the veil on and avoid tripping on your big day. While veils are very beautiful, they are entirely optional for the bride (unless your house of worship has rules regarding veils). Many other headpieces and accessories are available if you opt out of a veil. These include tiaras, barrettes, hats, and more. Printed by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

f you've recently become engaged, you may want to check your homeowners’ or renters’ insurance policy. That's because your engagement ring may not be fully covered by that policy. An engagement ring is a cherished gift and one you will want to protect. No one wants to imagine their ring being damaged, lost or stolen, but the fact is that these situations can and do happen. Typical insurance policies for your home or apartment set limits for certain categories of personal property, like jewelry. They may only cover $500 to $1,000 on a stolen ring. If the theft or loss occurs outside of the home, you may not be covered at all. Talk to an insurance agent to see if you can amend a policy or purchase other insurance if you want to protect your ring in case of theft or if it becomes lost or damaged. Here are some questions to ask if you're considering jewelry insurance. * Is there a deductible on the insurance, and if so, how much? * Do I need to have the ring appraised for insurance? Can I use my own appraiser or does the insurance company need to handle the appraisal? * Will the insurance cover theft or loss of the ring wherever it takes place, even if it occurs in a foreign country? * Can I receive a cash settlement for the value of the ring, or must the ring be replaced with another? * Does the policy cover repairs to damaged jewelry? * Can I purchase a "valued at" plan if my ring is one of a kind and cannot be replaced? This policy allows you to value your ring at a higher dollar amount than its appraised worth.

Speaking From The Heart: Making Your Vows Memorable

R

eciting traditional vows is still perfectly acceptable, but many couples are choosing to speak their own words, which sets a more intimate tone for the ceremony. For those who fear speaking in public, writing vows and expressing personal feelings can be a bit scary, but most couples find overcoming their fear is worth it to ensure a memorable wedding. Plan a romantic evening out together a day or two before writing your vows. Reminiscing about how you met, your first date, and special times you’ve shared together can help get your emotions flowing. Looking through photo albums or reading cards and letters your partner has sent you might also bring inspiration. Spend time alone listening to romantic songs and writing down your feelings and thoughts. Take some time to list the qualities and personality traits you love about your partner, what attracted you in the first place, what made you realize you were falling in love, and why you want to spend your life together. Some couples believe they have to be poetic in writing vows. Nothing could be further from the truth. Simply stating your feelings about how you met, how your relationship has grown, and how much your partner means to you is preferable to memorizing poetry that may come off sounding phony or stiff. Check out a few books on how to write vows from the library or rent a few of your favorite romantic movies. Using a phrase from a film or book won’t be corny if it’s meaningful in some way to you and your fiancé. Just be careful about using long passages or poems. You don’t want your guests to get bored while you’re reciting a sonnet. Keep your sentences easy to understand. Avoid using very long phrases and stay away from words that may be difficult to pronounce when you are nervous. Use traditional words like love, honor, cherish, and respect as a starting reference and build sentences around them by putting your feelings for your partner into words. Make your vows sincere and avoid a long-

winded recitation that sounds like a speech. Your vows should be short enough for you to remember without sounding like you are reciting a poem in a classroom. It’s okay to glance at a note card while you say your vows, but avoid reading them. Practice your vows with a friend so that your partner will hear your words for the first time during the ceremony. Consider shortening sentences if they seem too long or change repetitive words. Speaking from your heart at the ceremony will come easier if you review your vows several times before the wedding. Use the traditional marriage vows as a starting point and modify them to inject more of your personal feelings about your partner. For example, you might say, “I promise to love, honor and be there for you in good times and bad. I am committed to our union and promise to be faithful and keep our marriage strong for the rest of our lives.” Your wedding vows are a statement of your love and a time for promising commitment. If one partner is really uncomfortable writing vows, the other can help things along by writing some phrases both of you will repeat in the traditional manner, such as, “I will cherish, honor and love you, Jason, as long as we both shall live.” The groom would then repeat the same phrase, inserting the bride’s name. If you decide to use this method, keep the vows brief so your guests won’t get bored listening to a string of repeated phrases. When you have finished writing your vows, show them to a close friend or the person who will be officiating at the ceremony. He may be able to help you smooth out awkward phrases or suggest alternate words that express what you are trying to say in a more romantic way. Looking into your fiancé’s eyes as you recite your vows will help ensure that your words are coming from the heart. If you stumble over a word or forget a phrase due to nervousness, don’t panic. Pause for a moment and wing it if you have to. When you speak with love about how you feel about your partner and your future together, none of your guests will know you forgot a phrase or two. Selecting Wedding S

hop for rings with your budget in mind, but remember that your wedding rings will be with you for many years and you should buy the best quality you can afford. If your budget is extremely tight, you can always buy plain bands now and upgrade to higher quality rings as an anniversary gift to each other in the future. A reputable jeweler will take the time to explain the differences in metals and gemstones. Look for a store with a knowledgeable and patient staff. The salesperson should offer you personal attention and advice without pressuring you into one style over another. If you feel uncomfortable with hard-sell tactics or simply don't like the selection available, move on to another store. Many couples prefer the simplicity and tradition associated with plain gold or platinum bands. Some men shy away from rings with too much detail, but have no qualms about a plain band. You should also consider the wear and tear the ring will be subjected to on a daily basis when making your selection. If you work in an office, but your husband-to-be does heavy construction work or spends weekends rock climbing, you will want to choose a style that can withstand those things. Tex-

tured bands or those with diamond chips might not be such a good idea for people who spend a lot of time doing outdoor activities. While many couples still prefer matching bands, it's perfectly acceptable to have different style bands if the bride likes something more ornate and the groom wants a simple ring. Men's bands are available in three basic shapes: flat, halfround, and comfort fit. The width ranges from four to seven millimeters. Wider, more modern bands with texture or a few diamond chips are becoming increasingly popular as men become more comfortable with wearing jewelry. For those looking for something more interesting than a plain band but not too flashy, a twisted rope design or texture in a subtle matte finish looks nice. Men looking to make a bolder statement may like a masculine wide band with a square-cut diamond. If you can't decide between gold and platinum, there are many ring designs available that use both. For example, a wide platinum band may have a gold accent in the middle or around the edges.

Make sure the rings you buy are constructed of quality metal. The ring's shank should be stamped with 10K, 18K, or 24K for gold, and PT, PLAT, PT950, or IRIDPLAT for platinum. If you like the look of platinum but can't afford it, white gold has a similar look for a less expensive price. If you are considering wedding rings with diamonds, remember that the quality of diamonds is established according to cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Your jeweler can explain in detail what makes one diamond more desirable than another. If you can't afford a large diamond, ask the jeweler to recommend settings that show off smaller diamonds. A group of small diamonds in a cluster or pavé setting can be very beautiful yet more affordable than a large stone. Choose rings that are both comfortable and strong and give some thought to engraving the inside. While engraving is an additional cost, it will make your rings more special. Some brides prefer a matching engagement ring and wedding band. The two-band set is designed for the rings to fit together on the bride's finger. Typically the engagement ring will feature a solitaire diamond and the wedding ring will be set with smaller diamonds. If the groom purchased a separate engagement ring and the bride prefers the look of a matched set, most jewelers will be accommodating about making an exchange. Many couples like to be more creative with their ring designs. You might select an antique or Celtic look or modern engraved designs. Bands set with gemstones are another option. If you have a unique design in mind, some jewelry designers will work with you to create a custom-designed ring set. Ask the jeweler about available payment options for your rings. If you have a good credit rating, you may be able to arrange interest-free payments for a few months. Many jewelers have their own layaway and payment plans. Negotiate for the plan that best suits your needs and budget. Make sure your fingers are measured for the proper fit before purchasing your rings and try on the rings again a few days before the ceremony. If a ring is too tight, your fiancé may have trouble slipping it over your knuckle; if it's too loose, you could lose it on the dance floor. Always remove your rings when doing chores around the house like painting or scrubbing the bathtub. Harsh chemicals and chlorine bleach can pit metal or cause discoloration. Hiring a WEDDING PLANNER E 2011 Wedding Planner

ven the most organized person can find planning a wedding stressful. If you're holding down a full-time job, juggling university classes, or struggling to care for small children, the myriad details of planning a wedding can easily become overwhelming. Hiring a wedding planner is an expense many people try to eliminate, thinking they can enlist friends to help instead. The truth is that a good wedding coordinator is usually worth every penny he or she charges. Her expertise in dealing with caterers, florists, photographers, reception sites, and so on will save you countless hours of time in making arrangements, and could even save you money in the long run. Many experienced wedding planners have vendors they deal with frequently. The wedding planner may be able to negotiate discounts you would never be able to get on your own. In addition, she knows which vendors are dependable and which ones are best avoided. Inquire about the vendors the planner works with regularly. If she only mentions one or two names, it's not a good sign. She may be getting commissions for working only with them. You should work with someone who can compare prices from a variety of vendors and recommend the best deal for your situation. Ask friends, co-workers, and relatives for the names of wedding planners they may know or have used in the past, or consult caterers and reception sites for names of wedding planners. If you expect to have your wedding at a major hotel or country club, they may have a wedding planner on staff. When you've narrowed down your search, make consultation appointments. Compare the fees and services of each and determine which planner you seem to get along with best. If the coordinator seems genuinely interested in listening to your preferences and you like her personality, it's probably a good match. On the other hand, if you talk with a planner who seems controlling and steamrolls over everything you say, you should avoid hiring that person. Reputable wedding coordinators will not charge you for a consultation. Prepare a list of questions and jot down notes about your wedding preferences before the meeting. Some planners may have a minimum fee they will accept, while others may be willing to negotiate a fee based on the size and requirements of your particular wedding. The cost of hiring a wedding planner can vary from $300 for a small wedding to $3000 or more depending on the guest list and the services your wedding and reception require. Fees are typically based on the size of the wedding, the experience and reputation of the planner, and the array of services required. Coordinators may charge by the hour, as a percentage of wedding costs, or by a flat fee. One of the biggest advantages of working with a wedding planner is that she can help you develop a schedule of when things need to be done and follow up to ensure that no detail is overlooked. When you get caught up in wedding gown fittings, bridal showers, honeymoon planning, and trying to stay on top of things at work, it helps to know that someone else is handling the food, flowers, reception setup, and other items. Try to hire a wedding planner that you will enjoy spending time with. Her expertise in choosing flowers, selecting a menu, and finding a perfect reception location should make you feel more comfortable, not intimidated. If the planner seems to be pressuring you into going with her

39

preferences rather than your own, have a frank talk about your feelings. Most planners will go out of their way to accommodate your wishes. Be sure to check the references of any wedding planner you are considering. A good planner will be happy to have you talk with previous clients. You should inquire how many weddings the planner has worked on in the past and what sort of discounts she may be able to negotiate for you. Be prepared to answer a list of questions the planner will have for you. It is necessary for her to ask a lot of questions about your budget, preferences, and style in order to get a feel for the type of wedding you want. Take advantage of your planner's expertise to ask about possible locations that might be suitable for your wedding. She may know about estate homes, botanical gardens, or scenic seaside hotels that you might never find on your own. Make sure you understand all of the details of the contract you sign with the wedding planner. Will she be the go-between for negotiations with all vendors? If something happens before the wedding and she has to bow out, find out how much of the fee is refundable. Copyright © 2006 PublishersEdge

A Honeymoon That Will Thrill You Both B

y the time you get engaged you should know each other well enough to choose a honeymoon spot you both will enjoy. They say opposites attract, but when your personalities and interests are very different, it’s not always easy to agree on a destination. Don’t feel that you have to take a trip to a tropical island because it’s what people expect. A stay on an exotic island offers plenty of romantic atmosphere, but it’s not for everybody. Type-A personalities tend to get restless if there isn’t much to do other than admire the scenery and lounge on a beach. Outdoor enthusiasts might be happier going river-rafting or renting a cabin in the mountains with plenty of hiking

trails and rock-climbing rock climbing nearby. nearby When you can’t afford a trip to an island paradise like Hawaii, Jamaica, or Tahiti, there are plenty of scenic oceanside destinations in the United States. Consider Southern California, the Florida Keys, and Cape Cod, as well as lesser-known romantic destinations along both coasts. Couples who love cities will find an abundance of luxury hotels and recreational activities in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and New York. Along with art museums, historic sights, breathtaking views,

Choosing the perfect honeymoon spot can be fun and challenging, especially if you and your intended have very different interests. and five-star cuisine, big cities offer plenty of nightlife. Newlyweds who prefer a quieter escape may want to book a lodge in Colorado, Idaho, or Vermont where they can spend the day outdoors and cuddle by the fire at night. If you like the idea of socializing with other just-married couples, head for Niagara Falls or The Poconos. Resorts in the Caribbean, Jamaica and Hawaii also attract hordes of newlyweds. Las Vegas is well known for its quickie weddings and nightlife, but you’ll also find that hotels pull out all the stops to pamper honeymoon couples with oversized suites, luxurious beds, sunken tubs, etc. If the months of wedding preparations have left both of you frazzled, a stay at a spa resort can be both romantic and relaxing. Arizona boasts many luxurious and mid-priced resorts with on-site spa facilities that couples can enjoy together. Most also offer picturesque views, easy access to nearby attractions, and excellent restaurants. Northern California is a good choice for those who want to pursue activities like mountain biking by day and lively nightclubs by night. Couples visiting in summer have fun boating, hiking, and pursuing water sports, while winter visitors delight in skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and cuddling in front of cozy fireplaces. Don’t dismiss the idea of a road trip. You might consider renting a hot sports car for a week and cruise a scenic route that you have always wanted to explore. For example, California’s Highway One winding through Big Sur offers one breathtaking vista after another. Mexico is one of the least expensive foreign honeymoon destinations. An experienced travel agent can offer you a choice of affordable packages (including airfare and hotel) to resorts in Cancun, Cozumel, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Along with enjoying deluxe accommodations, you’ll be able to explore nearby ruins, go snorkeling or parasailing, and soak up the sun on gorgeous beaches.

41

If you have your heart set on honeymooning in Europe, talk with a travel agent about visiting the cities that interest you most. He or she may be able to arrange a package that includes a few days in several cities like Paris, Rome, London, and Athens. Many newlyweds enjoy the convenience and comfort of a cruise. Along with the chance to sail on a ship with all the amenities of a luxury hotel, cruising offers the chance to visit several ports without having to hassle with checking in and out of hotels. You can choose from cruises to Mexico, the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, the Greek Islands, or South America. If your honeymoon time is limited, consider visiting nearby Canada. Most flights from the United States are fairly short, and going through customs is a breeze for most Americans. Vancouver is a fun city to explore on foot with beautiful scenery, numerous attractions, and a huge variety of elegant hotels. Montreal has a more European flavor, while Toronto bustles with big city activities. When you can’t agree on where to go for your honeymoon, ask a travel agent you trust for suggestions on destinations that will fit your budget. Be specific about the type of hotels you would like and your top priorities as far as sightseeing, cuisine, and other activities. Your agent should be able to recommend several all-inclusive honeymoon packages that you might not be able to find on your own. Be honest with your partner about what is most important to you and be willing to compromise to get a better deal. If you’re flexible, you might be able to extend your stay for a couple of days by taking a deluxe room instead of an ocean view suite. Copyright © 2006 Publishers-Edge

A Secret You Should Know About Honeymoon Planning ith the advent of the Internet and its many travel Web sites, it seems that there would be no need to have an actual person book your honeymoon travel arrangements. Surprisingly, however, more and more people are going back to using travel agents for at least some of their travel needs. According to a New York Times article, Forrester Research, a technology-consulting firm, reports 9 percent fewer people booked travel online in 2007 than in 2005. Many brides and grooms embarking on their honeymoon planning often find themselves turning to an experienced travel agent for the very first time in their lives, even though they are experienced enough with the Internet to book their own travel plans. Honeymoon couples have many reasons for using a travel agent to help plan and book their honeymoon, not the least of which is the time they can save and focus on other wedding details instead. and save them time and, frequently, money. While it's true that travel agents can save a couple time they might otherwise spend on research and planning themselves, can they really save them money? Travel agents have relationships with tour and package providers that they can leverage in ways the average consumer cannot. Also, honeymoons can involve complex itineraries to various places throughout the world. In fact, honeymoon and luxury travelers have never really stopped using travel agents for this very reason. What the matter really boils down to is this: there is so much information and so many travel options from which to choose that using a travel professional with the "been there, done that" experience can make the difference between a good trip and the "trip of a lifetime." Using a travel agent to help plan and book honeymoon travel arrangements can save couples time and money.

ost brides don't want stress while getting well-tressed for their wedding day. Besides hiring a reputable stylist and doing a practice hairdo run before the wedding, here are a few helpful tips. · Wear a button-down shirt when having your hair and makeup done on your wedding day. This way you can take off the shirt and change into your dress without touching your hair or makeup. · Bring in your veil or headpiece in advance so your stylist can ensure that the hair combs attached will be in the right position for the style you've requested. If they're not, you'll have ample time to adjust them. · Don't apply conditioner to your hair on the day of your wedding. Conditioner may make your hair too silky and smooth, which could be a disadvantage if you want hair to stay put with combs or pins in an up-do. · Opt for a two-piece veil if you desire one that is a long cathedral-style. This way you can keep the long portion attached for pictures and the ceremony and then simply remove a portion for the reception. · If your headpiece has gemstones or crystals in the design, have the stylist cover the stones up as much as possible before using hairspray. Talk to a jeweler after the wedding about the right way to clean the stones. Otherwise, the hairspray can tarnish the headpiece and potentially damage the stones. · Go with a simple style that matches your personality. You don't want to look like a completely different person on your wedding day - just a classier representation of yourself.

Choosing a

Wedding Photographer T

he days when a wedding photographer was one man with a line of humorous chat who owned his own tuxedo are long over. Technology has turned documenting your wedding into a multimedia affair for which the ability to point, shoot, and make people laugh – while still important – just isn’t enough anymore. And since documenting your wedding can be a considerable expense, you want to make sure you choose the right person. First, your wedding documentation can take the form of both still pictures and video, which can be shot digitally or on film and provided to you in a variety of sizes or formats, including actual photos, digital files or online albums, digital picture frames, videotapes and DVDs (either showing raw footage and/or edited). Most couples usually allocate about 10 percent of their budget for photography; a professional wedding video might be another 10 to 15 percent. For the average $20,000 wedding, that’s around $4,000 – though some spend as much as $15,000. For that kind of money, you want someone who gets it right. The first step in choosing a photographer is to ask friends to see their wedding albums and videos to see if they’re the quality you want and even (if they’re good friends) ask them how much they paid. You can find local photographers through advertisements or by checking the wedding listings in the phone book. Some photographers (and many couples) also often showcase their pictures online. Develop a list of photographers or videographers in advance. You might have to hire your second choice if the first isn’t available. And remember, separate

ph photography and videography when m making decisions – you may love th photographer but hate his firm’s the v videos. Don’t sell out one to get the o other. Remember, look at a lot of p photos – some photographers are g good at candid shots, some set up b beautiful portraits and more posed g group shots, some are better in b black and white, some in color – choose the photographer whose personal style most closely matches your own. When selecting a videographer, remember to ask if the cost of the video includes editing as well as the number of copies. Also ask about the editing process, since you may or may not want to be closely involved in the editing of your wedding or reception video. And remember that as special requests mount, so do fees, so try to stick to your budget as much as possible. Another great resource in choosing someone to document your wedding is your wedding planner. They may have people to recommend. People who are in charge of the wedding venue have also seen photographers and weddings come and go, know where the typical pictures are taken, and have likely heard about good and bad photographers. They can also work with the photographer/videographer you choose on creating a more photo-friendly backdrop. They can suggest a place for still photos or altering the lighting to improve the photogenic qualities of both the place and the people. A final thought: though it may seem corny, some of the best pictures will come from putting a disposable camera or two on every table and letting people snap away to their heart’s content. Discussing Finances F or N ewlyweds

W

ith wedding costs getting higher each year, much of a bride and groom's pre-wedding focus is on finances. But as any newlywed knows, the focus on finances isn't lifted once the walk down the aisle is complete and the honeymoon is over. In fact, newlyweds face a number of financial tasks once they've arrived home. Though some might seem obvious, due to the hectic nature of weddings it's important to review just what you have and haven't done. Changed policies? Chances are both spouses have separate insurance policies, investment accounts, 401(k) plans, etc. Once married, it's prudent for couples to change the beneficiaries on such accounts should something happen to either person. Regardless of what each individual's assets are, it's important to make these changes as soon as possible after the wedding, when doing so is still fresh in your mind. Examined your coverage? Couples should compare each other's insurance policies. Often, couples can save money when combining policies such as automobile insurance. Check for duplicate coverage as well, so you can avoid paying for the same thing twice. If you both have renter's insurance, one person can now drop it, since you will be living together. It's also important to reconsider the health insurance plans offered by both your places of employment. Most companies offer a choice of coverage with some that are better for singles and others that benefit married couples. Also, some-

times it makes more sense for spouses to keep their own coverage. Either way, examine both the existing policies and other options and determine what's best for you. Updated your will? Most singles don't even have a will, but it's important for married couples to have one in case of an accident. Many couples prefer their spouse have the power of attorney should they get in an accident, but unless there's a will stating that preference, that position can be challenged by family members. A will ensures your assets will go where you want them to go should you pass away and will make sure the person you want handling such matters ends up handling them. Discussed debt? While most couples have discussed long-term financial goals before walking down the aisle, even the closest of couples might be too embarrassed or ashamed to discuss their personal debt with their spouse. However, each person's financial background will impact the couple's financial future, so it is important to discuss debt and develop a plan for getting rid of it. It is also a good idea to discuss a budget. Due to the escalating cost of real estate, many newly married couples cannot afford to purchase a home right away. Since home ownership is a goal of most married couples, it's best to establish a mutual budget. Lots of couples have one spender and one saver, but the way for both to be happy and ultimately realize joint financial goals is to agree upon and adjust to an established budget.

Reception that Won't Blow The Budget

a S

ticking to a reception budget may seem like a daunting task. Of course, making the guest list smaller is the easiest and most obvious way to keep reception costs down, but with two families and a host of friends to accommodate, whittling the list is often difficult. Trimming costs in other areas will allow you to invite more guests without going over your budget. Look for free or low-cost locations to hold the reception. If you have a family member with a large backyard, an outdoor reception can be beautiful. Check into renting tents, a gazebo, chairs and tables. Party supply rental outlets often have package deals. If you will be getting married in fall or winter, investigate church halls and club facilities. For example, if your uncle is a member of the Elks Club, he may be able to get you a reduced rate on renting their hall. Do you know anyone who owns or manages a restaurant? A church member or neighbor might be able to arrange a discount rate on a restaurant banquet room. Look into smaller hotels and restaurants that have private rooms. Some may offer package deals with meals for a specified number of guests. If your guest list will be small, you may be able to have your reception in an unusual location, such as a local art gallery, tearoom or dinner theater. Don’t be shy about asking your family and friends for help. Depending on the size of your guest list, you may want to have a potluck reception where relatives and friends supply some or all of the food. Your favorite aunt might be thrilled to make her famous fruit salad as part of the feast, or your uncle who owns a restaurant could supply the appetizers and desserts. Side dishes like salads, rice, and vegetable trays with dips are easy to prepare in bulk, or you can arrange for party plat-

ters from your local supermarket or deli. You may also be able to save on party rental fees by borrowing items like punch bowl sets, serving trays and folding tables. Instead of hiring a florist to make the centerpieces, buy flower bouquets and ask a crafty friend to help you arrange them in pretty vases bought at a discount store. Bring a touch of nature indoors with displays of colorful leaves, gourds, and wreaths. Small, hollowed-out pumpkins make terrific candleholders, and unusual shaped branches and dried flowers add a touch of drama to table centerpieces. Use rich colors like red, orange, and yellow for a fall reception, or go with red, green, and silver for a winter wedding. For a spring and summer reception, lace and flowers or seashells and potted palms add a seasonal touch. Having the wedding on a Friday evening rather than Saturday can reduce the cost at many facilities. Avoid scheduling the wedding and reception for April through June or on holidays like Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve. Consider having an evening wedding with a dessert and champagne reception, which will cost 75 percent less than a traditional reception with a buffet or sit-down dinner. Another option is a brunch following a morning wedding. Serving a buffet with quiche, breakfast meats, croissants and pastries will cost much less than a lunch or dinner buffet. Shop for trays, platters, dishes, flatware, etc. after major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. You may also find great deals on glassware, serving pieces, napkins, tablecloths, etc. Pick up a few sets of twinkling lights and arrange them in trees or around doorways and windows to create a festive mood. Peruse the aisles of discount centers and dollar stores for decorations like

2011 Wedding Planner candlestick holders, ribbons, paper lanterns, and other items. Entertainment can be a major expense at a reception. If you are having a dessert menu or a brunch, ask a friend to play the piano rather than hiring a disc jockey, or arrange for piped-in classical or pop music. A dance floor is a nice touch, but it’s optional. Depending on the size of the facility, you may be able to clear a space for a dance floor. If the reception is in a backyard, you can rent a dance floor that fits over the pool or a patio.

Wedding cakes are expensive but asking a friend to make the cake can put pressure on both of you. Check into culinary schools in your area where a teacher and students might decorate a cake for a reasonable rate. An alternative is buying a small cake from your bakery for the traditional cake cutting and serving sheet cakes to the guests. Copyright © 2007 Publishers-Edge

Wedding Day Meal Options spread out more th than han ever. The guest lists at many weddings are increasingly looking like a United Nations summit, with attendees coming from all over the map. If a wedding guest list features many guests who have flown or traveled from afar, it might be more appropriate to offer a more relaxed, sit-down meal. The age of guests should be considered as well before deciding on a meal option. If there will be lots of elderly people or even guests with young children, it's probably easier on them to offer a sit-down meal. For weddings that boast a particularly young guest list, a buffet might encourage more mingling. · Budget: Buffet-style meals are generally less expensive, but this isn't always the case. Some think a sit-down meal will cost more because a wait staff is required to serve the

food and dri drinks. inkks. While this is true to an extent, buffet-style meals still require a staff on hand to replace food that has run out. The time of day of the reception plays a role as well. For example, a buffet-style lunch will not be nearly as expensive as a buffet-style dinner. In general, though, a buffet at a wedding is usually more budget-friendly than a sit-down, typically costing far less per plate. · Flexibility: Guest lists are often unique, with each guest having particular preferences when it comes to food. This fact makes buffets an especially attractive option. Sit-down meals can be very limiting, which won't bode well for picky eaters. A buffet, however, offers many selections, and chances are that even the pickiest of eaters will find something they enjoy.

7

One of the biggest decisions a couple has too make when planning a wedding concerns how to feed the guests. This decision boils down to two choices: a sit-down meal or a buffet-style serving. Each meal style has its own pros and cons, and which route to take typically depends on a number of factors. · Degree of formality: Formal weddings often call for a sit-down meal, as it's generally viewed as more elegant. But this doesn't necessarily exclude the buffet-style option from formal weddings. At more-laid back but still formal weddings, a buffet-style meal is perfectly acceptable. For weddings that aren't as formal, it's generally best (and less expensive) to offer a buffet-style meal. · The guest list: The global nature of the world today means friends and family are

T

hough it’s not on the Surgeon General’s list of “stressful life events” (you’d have to break up with your fiancé to make that list) the time leading up to your wedding can be one of the most stressful periods of your life. Take an intimate personal relationship, add two families, mix with friends, season with financial issues and an unhealthy dose of expectations on both sides and you've got a pressure cooker waiting to explode. If you really want your wedding to be the happiest, most memorable day of your life, here are ten ways to attempt to ward off wedding stress. Manage your expectations: In daily life, we all know that, well, stuff happens. Yet, somehow we expect an extremely complicated event like a wedding, which can involve hundreds of people, multiple locations, food, drink, flowers, photography, and travel, to go off without a hitch. Simply put, expect the unexpected. Problems will crop up along the way, from the groom’s unexpected taste for pastel tuxedos to an unexpected collision between a five-tier wedding cake and a rambunctious ring bearer. Remind yourself on a moment-by-moment basis as the big day approaches that the most important thing is the commitment being made between two people in the presence of their loved

Stick to your budget: Though you may have always dreamed of a lavish wedding with ten bridesmaids, horse drawn carriages, and vintage champagne fountains, is it worth putting yourself and your family into debt for the rest of your lives? Even before you start talking about the details, agree upon a limit for wedding expenses and stick to it. If releasing a hundred live doves into the air on the chapel steps puts you over the top, you’ll either have to give them up, compromise on something else, or come up with something equally special but not nearly as costly. And remember, finances are one of the key factors for stress among young married couples, so you don’t want to start off at a disadvantage before you even tie the knot. Draw on your community: You may be surprised to find that your local area if filled with fine florists, wonderful caterers, creative wedding planners, clever photographers, and a host of other helpful people who will take a personal interest in making your special day special. Look through your local paper’s wedding section, ask around, and take the time to find a family of merchants in your community who will appreciate your business and go the extra mile to make sure their part of the festivities represents

How To Handle Pre-Wedding

Stress ones. The rest, for better or worse, is just a big party. Appoint a general: Whether you hire a professional wedding planner or plan the wedding yourself, pick one person, preferably not the bride, who is willing, ready, and able to be the goto person for everything having to do with the wedding. Even though it’s probably going to be necessary to divide and conquer – parceling out responsibilities between various members of the wedding party, family, and friends – there should be one person who is the line of communication between the bride and groom for all wedding plans. This person will have to be incredibly organized and patient.

their best. Maintain your routine: A wedding can be a huge undertaking, the responsibility for which you are shouldering in addition to your job, home, family, etc. It can be easy to to shortchange things like work, diet, and exercise. As important as your wedding is, you don’t want to have to rebuild your life when you return from your honeymoon. Find peace: The worst place to discuss your wedding plans is in your own home. Keeping wedding planning and decision making separate from the rest of your life will help keep time and emotions from spinning out of control, ensure that you don’t come home

Printed by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

2011 Wedding Planner from a hard day at work to find your home taken over by wedding paraphernalia, and in general reinforce the idea that your wedding and your life are, in the end, not the same thing. Everyone has a role to play: The bride and groom are not the only people who experience wedding stress. Just about every member of the wedding party and group of immediate family and friends has a stake in making your wedding day special, and one of the best ways to help focus their energies is to give everyone a job. No matter how small the task, making sure that everyone gets to contribute can go a long way to creating a harmonious event that’s memorable for all concerned. Don’t forget the groom: In the end, your wedding is about affirming your relationship. So remember that the groom, as much as you may expect him to be even more loving and supportive during the process of planning a wedding than he normally is, has concerns of his own. Don’t make the mistake of putting your relationship on hold until your wedding day. Set aside time to do the things you normally do together, don’t make every interaction all about the wedding, and try to look at the entire planning process as part of the celebration of your love and commitment. Compromise, compromise: You can’t always get what

you want, whether it’s because of finances, other people’s preferences, timing, or some other reason. Is it really worth causing a blow up if the pale pink roses you’ve dreamed of since you were 10 years old turn out to be closer to hot pink, or if the groom insists on purple cummerbunds and bow ties? Remind yourself that the picture you have in your head of your ideal wedding is one you created on your own, while creating the real thing is something you need to share with your partner, families, and friends. Elope (or at least downscale): There’s usually a point in time in every planning process where it all comes down to one question: is it worth it? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with deciding that the average $20,000 cost of a wedding could be put to better use. Whether you decide to take half that amount and go on a fabulous trip, or put it toward a down payment on a house or just start cutting out the “extras,” the most important thing about any wedding isn’t the externals, but the sharing of an important milestone with your loved ones, and that can happen in the simplest of places, in the simplest of ways and still be beautiful, meaningful, and provide memories that last a lifetime, minus a great deal of stress. Plan A Spa Day For

The Bride And Groom T

he weeks leading up to the wedding can be hectic and very stressful. In addition to planning last-minute wedding details, the bride and groom often struggle to keep up with the demands of work and find time to be together. A week or two before the wedding is a perfect time to schedule a couple’s spa day. Not only will it provide a time to relax and enjoy each other’s company in a tranquil environment, it’s a good time to address any concerns such as hair removal, skin care, or body toning. You may want to begin your day with separate treatments. The groom can enjoy a deep tissue massage while the bride gets a European-style facial or moisturizing mask. A hot towel infusion massage combines a deep, vigorous massage with steaming hot towels and specialized oils. It’s an excellent tension reliever and also good for those suffering from sore muscles. Both of you can meet up later in the steam room before beginning the rest of your treatments. Most day spas also have a juice bar or café where you can have a healthy lunch or snack between treatments. Some spas treat couples to a touch of romance with candle-lit dual massages, soft music, and flower-filled pools. Hydrotherapy treatments may include shower sprays, flowthrough tubs, or whirlpool baths. Both the bride and groom can benefit from salt scrubs, mud wraps, clay masks, and other treatments designed to slough off dead skin cells. Skin polishes and scrubs may blend ingredients like citrus oils with jojoba beads or ginger oil and coconut to exfoliate, hydrate, and give the skin a healthy glow. Some spa treatments like mud wraps and body wraps are designed to cleanse, purify, and detoxify your body. Others firm, tone, reduce cellulite, or help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Depending on the type of spa you visit, you should be able to choose from a variety of skin-soothing and moisturizing body scrubs and treatments using fruits, emollient oils, exfoliants, and herbs. Some spas also offer hot stone therapy, aromatherapy, and other treatments to soothe your mind as well as your body. With stone therapy, you may receive a deep tissue massage alternating with hot and cool stones to remove accumulated toxins and relieve stress. Aromatherapy treatments use essential oils extracted from plants, herbs, and flowers, which are diluted with water

before they are applied to the skin. The oils may be blended together and applied to the skin with massage, bathing, warm infusions, or compresses. Various oils are used to achieve different results. Lavender and geranium oils are often used for irritated skin while ylangylang can help reduce oily skin. You should be careful in scheduling treatments like dermabrasion or peels that could leave your skin very sensitive or raw. Most spas recommend that you have facials or skin treatments two or three weeks prior to the wedding. When excess hair is an issue, waxing and laser hair removal are two options you may want to consider. It is recommended that you also schedule these services a week or two before the wedding in case you experience any skin sensitivity afterwards. If both of you are interested in firming up your bodies, you may want to choose a spa that includes a fitness center. Depending on what area of the body you hope to improve before the wedding, you should consult with a trainer several months in advance to plan a fitness program that will help you achieve your goals in the shortest amount of time. Including strength training exercises in your fitness routine may be just what you need to help boost your metabolism and firm up your arms, legs, and abs. Many spas offer state-of-the-art technology for treatment of acne and pock marks, removal of tattoos, and correction of sun damage, rosacea, and freckles. The photo-rejuvenation process, also referred to as photo-facials, uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to treat skin discolorations and improve skin tone and texture. Regular facials for men and women usually include deep cleansing, steam, extractions, exfoliation, a mask, and a moisturizer, plus a neck and shoulder massage. Special ingredients such as enzymes, aloe vera gel, collagen, and antioxidants help to improve skin clarity. Facials may include clay masks to remove impurities or formulations with Vitamin C, avocado, grapefruit, ginseng, or enzymes to cleanse, refine, and hydrate the skin. Finish off the day with his-and-hers manicures, pedicures, and hair styling. Try a scalp revitalizer using a custom blend of herbs and warm oils to stimulate circulation and nourish your hair. Music For Your Wedding Ceremony Traditional Wedding Music

If you are getting married at your church, it is important to talk to the pastor, music director, or church administrator to find out if there are any restrictions on the style of music played in the church. They may also have some great suggestions and be able to give you some recommendations based on previous experience and also the abilities of the resident pianist, organist and/or choir. If you plan to invite guest musicians or soloists to perform, it is considered a courtesy to discuss that in advance with church staff. In most traditional wedding services, the music will fall into the following four sections: 1. Prelude This music will be played from the time your guests arrive at the church until the bride is set to begin her walk down the aisle. Generally, the mood of the music should be light and celebratory. Some popular choices include: - Bach’s Fantasia in G - Selections from Elgar’s "Enigma Variations" - Bach’s "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" - Selections from Handel’s "Water Music" - Schubert’s "Ave Maria" - Pachelbel’s Canon in D - Mozart’s "Exultate Jubilate" - Debussy’s "Clair de Lune"

It’s chosen for its stateliness and it must be long enough to last until the bride joins the groom at the altar. The most traditional choice here is: - Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus" from “Lohengrin” ("Here Comes the Bride")

2011

If you want to make a different statement, some alternatives include: - Handel’s "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" - Handel’s Aria in F major - Purcell’s March in C - Clarke’s "Trumpet Voluntary" - Grieg’s “Morning” from “Peer Gynt” - Mozart’s "Marriage of Figaro" 3. Incidental Music These selections would be performed at various points in the ceremony, usually by soloists although you might also choose to insert a hymn that professes your faith or your love. The choice here is very personal. Popular choices are:

4. Recessional This selection is your grand finale and is played at the conclusion of the ceremony as you walk down the aisle together. Once again, tradition dictates: - Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" But, if you want to experiment with something a little different, try: - Hollins’ "Bridal March" - Pachelbel’s Toccata in C - Beethoven’s "Ode to Joy" from the Ninth Symphony

Outdoor occasions may lack access to electricity, limiting your choice of instruments, whereas indoor ceremonies may make use of recorded music. Nonetheless, you should try to follow the same basic structure (prelude, processional, incidental and recessional) as in the traditional ceremony, choosing music that suits the mood of each stage of the ceremony. Couples opting for a nontraditional service may choose any variety of music of personal significance, from classical to jazz, pop to folk. The important thing is to plan your selections out well ahead of time and discuss them with the musicians and/or disc jockeys. You should plan and arrange for the music close to six months before the event. Copyright © 2008 PublishersEdge.

Rehearsal D inner W How to Choose A Restaurant For The

hile some people question the value of holding a rehearsal dinner, most couples choose to honor the tradition because it provides a perfect setting for the bride and groom’s families and friends to get to know each other a little better. Rehearsal dinners usually take place after a run-through of the wedding ceremony. It is preferable to schedule the rehearsal and dinner a couple of days prior to the actual ceremony so everyone can be well rested for the wedding, but if you will have several guests and members of the wedding party arriving from out of town, that may not be possible. Make reservations for the rehearsal dinner as far in advance as possible, particularly if you have chosen an eatery that is on the small side or very much in demand. If your guest list is a large one, look into restaurants that close for private parties on specified evenings or choose a spot that has a banquet room large enough to accommodate your guests. It makes sense to choose a restaurant near the ceremony site, but if transportation is readily available for all the guests, there is no reason you can’t have the dinner at a location across town. Talk to the restaurant manager about special deals they may offer for large parties. Many have banquet menus with a choice of two or three entrees at a fixed price. Typically this includes a beef, chicken or vegetarian entrée plus an appetizer, a couple of sides or salad, plus coffee and dessert. Traditionally, the groom’s parents host the rehearsal dinner for the wedding party, immediate family, and close friends, but it is also acceptable for other relatives or friends of the bride and groom to plan and host the dinner. You may want to include out-of-town guests who are flying in for the wedding if the budget will allow it. Popular sites for wedding rehearsal dinners include upscale restaurants, country clubs, dinner cruises, and hotels. If your wedding is informal, you may want to choose a more casual eatery for the rehearsal dinner or have a catered dinner at a relative’s home. You can make the evening more memorable by choosing a venue that offers a theme or entertainment as part of the dinner package. Try to pick an atmosphere and cuisine

Printed by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

that will be different from your wedding reception. If the wedding reception will have a formal sit-down dinner with continental cuisine, choose a spot for the rehearsal dinner that is more casual, such as an Italian bistro or Mexican cantina. Pick a restaurant that offers attentive service, a comfortable atmosphere, and quality food. You want your friends and family to relax, mingle, and have a good time before the wedding. An overly-formal setting can defeat your purpose and make your guests may feel uncomfortable. Invite guests to the dinner by mail and include a detailed map with directions on how to get to the location. If the dinner will be immediately after the wedding rehearsal, you may want to provide transportation to the restaurant by setting up vans, carpools, limos, etc. Keep the guest list for the rehearsal dinner to a small size. The parents of the bride and groom should be there, as well as the best man, maid of honor, bridesmaids and groomsmen. It is respectful to invite the person who will be officiating the ceremony. Beyond that, you may choose to invite your grandparents, other immediate family members, or close friends and family who have traveled a great distance to attend the wedding. Just don’t allow the guest list to grow too large or you will have to book a banquet hall rather than a restaurant. At some point during the dinner, the bride and groom should thank all their guests and single out those who have been particularly helpful in planning the ceremony and reception. The parents of the couple may offer toasts, and other guests around the table are free to toast or offer anecdotes about their own weddings. Some couples give small gifts to the bridesmaids and groomsmen after the dinner as a token of appreciation. Depending on the size of the group, you may want to make a seating chart and provide place cards. Avoid seating everyone from the bride’s family at one table and the groom’s at another. The purpose of the dinner is to allow people to converse and get to know each other, so arrange the tables in a manner that is conducive to mingling. Copyright © 2007 Publishers-Edge

Responsibilities of the Wedding Party T

he Maid/Matron of Honor (or Honor Attendant) - She is usually the bride’s best friend or a close family member. As the name indicates, she is the maid (or attendant) who assists the bride in getting ready for her wedding day. She will attend to the bride on the day of the wedding, tending to last minutes chores such as making sure the dress fits properly, the bride’s bouquet is in hand and arranged properly, her hair is perfect, etc. Often, the honor attendant will accompany the bride that morning to the beauty salon or spa to help keep the bride calm. It is normal for the honor attendant to drive the bride anywhere she needs to go prior to the ceremony on the day of the wedding. Along with helping the bride on the day of the wedding, the maid of honor usually plans and hosts a shower for the bride. She may also organize a pre-wedding party (bachelorette party) to have a night out with the girls. At the wedding, she wears a dress (that she usually pays for) that matches or coordinates with the other bridesmaids. Her bouquet may be slightly more elaborate than those of the bride’s other attendants. Bridesmaids – Usually two to five select friends or family members are chosen to be bridesmaids. They attend pre-wedding parties (tough job but someone has to do it) and help prepare for the wedding ceremony and reception. They help the bride attend to all matters of the day. They may step in to pinch hit for the maid of honor if she is unable to go with the bride for any appointment. As a group they may all go with the bride to select flowers, gowns, etc. At the wedding, they wear matching or coordinated dresses (that they usually pay for) to the ceremony. Best Man – He is often the groom’s best friend or a close family member. He hosts the pre-wedding party (bachelor party) and attends to any wedding day plans that need attention prior to the ceremony. He holds the ring during the ceremony and is responsible to see that the groom and the ring both arrive to the wedding ceremony on time. If the wedding is a formal ceremony, he wears formalwear (that he pays the rental fees for) that matches the other groomsmen and ushers. At the

reception, he is usually responsible for the first toast and leads guests in wishing the happy couple good fortune and happiness. Groomsmen and Ushers - Usually four to seven select friends or family members are chosen to be groomsmen and ushers. The groomsmen are attendants to the groom and the wedding guests. They help the groom attend to all pre-ceremony matters, which may include travel arrangements for out-of-town guests from the airport or hotel to the ceremony or from the ceremony to the reception. They are generally the ones who decorate the couple’s departure car. Groomsmen who are not serving as ushers escort the bridesmaids down the aisle and dance the first dance ceremony at the reception with their assigned bridesmaid. If the wedding is a formal ceremony, they wear formalwear (that they pay the rental fees for) that matches the other groomsmen and ushers. Ushers escort all guests to their seats for the wedding ceremony. Usually they arrange for the bride’s friends and family to be seated on one side and the groom’s friends and family on the other. Immediately prior to the wedding party’ entrance, they seat the mother of the groom and then the mother of the bride. Children – We all remember attending a wedding that had children involved in the ceremony and how cute they looked dressed in formalwear. The best ways to involve children between the ages of 9 and 14 in your ceremony are as candle lighters, junior groomsmen, or junior bridesmaids. Children between the ages of 3 and 9 usually serve as ring bearers and flower girls. They are usually family members or the children of close friends. They wear coordinating or matching formalwear to the bride and groom’s attendants. The rental of the tux or purchase of the gown is usually paid for by the parents of the junior attendants. Bride – Enjoy your day and love your husband faithfully for the remainder of your life. Groom – Be on time for the wedding and love your wife faithfully for the remainder of your life. HOSTING AN OUTDOOR WEDDING The popularity of outdoor weddings is on the rise. Gardens and parks top the list of outdoor locales for weddings, followed by beaches. Having a wedding outdoors can be a beautiful event, but more than traditional weddings, outdoor weddings must take Mother Nature into heavy consideration. Consider these other tips to increase the fun and keep stress at bay. * Visit the venue for a guests'-eye view: It's important to visit your wedding site and view the surroundings as your guests will experience them on your wedding day. Consider where and how the sun shines at that hour of the day, so guests won't be blinded and uncomfortable. Make sure the venue is set up so everyone can have an unobstructed view of the happy couple. Keep temperature in mind as well. Will guests be too hot or too cold, and are there ways to correct those issues? * Rain, shine or something in between: Naturally, you will have to consider precipitation on your wedding day. Putting the "good luck factor" of a rainy wedding day aside, few people want to sit through a ceremony when rain or snow is falling. Therefore, ensure that the venue has an indoor option if absolutely necessary, or at least a suitable outdoor sheltered area. * Expect the unexpected: Unexpected guests may show up to your wedding (of the furry or feathered kind) if it takes place outdoors. There also may be ambient noises or other distractions. Also, it's not uncommon for the weather to change relatively quickly, despite how adamant the local weather person was that

it would be sunny all day. It's vital to remain calm no matter what bumps come up along the way. If you can weather the inconveniences and unexpected things, guests will be better equipped to remember the overall positive experience of your wedding instead of the minor details that had the potential to derail it. * There she blows: The wind can be something couples do not anticipate on their wedding day. From photos to outdoor receptions, a windy day can wreak more havoc than rain sometimes. Wind can launch tablecloths and set favors airborne. It can also catch your veil and blow hairstyles into disarray. If you prefer not to have the wind in your hair and face, go to Plan B and move the party indoors. * Bugs and allergies: Keep in mind seasonal allergies and insect invaders at an outdoor wedding. You don't want guests sneezing or swatting. Pack allergy relief pills and keep citronella candles or pleasant-smelling bug spray in courtesy baskets at the reception. * Dress accordingly: It is common courtesy to let your guests know that a portion or all of the wedding will be hosted outdoors. This way they can bring what they need to be comfortable. For the wedding party and the bride and groom, outdoor conditions should also be factored into wardrobe decisions. A shorter gown or more casual clothing may work better for a beach wedding. Avoid strapless gowns and don sheaths or jackets if the wedding is outdoors in cooler weather. Remember, it's not just about looking good, but about feeling good and enjoying yourself at the wedding as well.

O

n your wedding day, the closest friends and family members of both you and your spouse are all together to help celebrate your new life together. Your wedding brings together many people who do not know one another, which makes introductions an important part of your responsibility. When making introductions, remember to present the “lesser ranking person to the “senior person.

MAKING

INTRODUCTIONS

The rules for determining status are as follows: 1. An older person outranks a younger person. 2. Someone senior at work outranks someone junior at work. 3. An out-of-town guest outranks a local guest of equal status. 4. A person serving a religious ministry outranks a layperson. 5. A woman outranks a man of equal status. 6. Your in-laws outrank your friends and family members. The way you present the person is fairly simple: you say the name of the senior person ďŹ rst and introduce the lesser-ranking person. Then introduce the higher-ranking person to the lesser ranking person. An example would be “Uncle Joe, may I present my husband, John Doe. John, this is my uncle, Mr. Joe Brown.â€? Your husband, John, would refer to your uncle as Mr. Brown until he gives him permission to call him “Uncle Joe.â€? When introducing people of equal status, it doesn’t matter who is presented ďŹ rst. If you are introducing a longtime friend to a co-worker, it might go something like this: “Julie, I would like you to meet Tom Smith, my teammate on our varsity basketball team. Tom, this is Julie Johnson, the sales manager where we both work." It is a good idea to give a little information about the people when introducing them, as this can be a conversation starter. When introducing your in-laws, be careful not to refer to them as Mom and Dad until they have given you permission to do so. Introduce them as Mr. and Mrs. Brown. If they want you to refer to them in a more intimate way (Mom and Dad or using their ďŹ rst names), they will let you know. Copyright Š 2006 Publishers-Edge

Tux Terminology F or The hough the bulk of wedding day attire attention typically focuses on what the bride is wearing, grooms also have important choices to make when it comes to what to wear on their wedding day. And just like brides have many different styles from which to choose with respect to their gowns, grooms also have many choices when it comes to their tuxedos. While a groom's wardrobe decision typically does not involve as much forethought or time as a bride's, he should keep in mind several factors before choosing a tuxedo. These include the degree of formality and the time of the event in addition to the style of the tuxedo itself. For instance, if the event is going to be ultra-formal, then a traditional tuxedo complete with a tuxedo vest and tie is the most appropriate choice. Grooms going this route can also choose to add a top hat, cane, and even tuxedo gloves as accessories. However, at less formal weddings, this would clearly not be the best option. To help you make the right decision, here is a list of some tuxedo terminology that should help you make a more educated choice. Single-Breasted: Any man who has ever put on a suit, be it a tux or a business suit, likely knows that singlebreasted means a suit with a single row of buttons down the middle. This has become the more popular choice recently and is appropriate for men of all body types. Single-breasted suits come in many styles. You can order a single-breasted tuxedo with either one button or two, with the choice typically depending on the groom's height (taller grooms usually prefer two buttons, while shorter grooms like one button). Grooms can also order threeor four-button single-breasted tuxedos. These are generally only good for men who are particularly tall or thin. Double-Breasted: As one might infer, the double-breasted tuxedo has two rows of buttons as opposed to one. Typically, these work best with heftier grooms, as double-breasted suits tend

T

to hide girth and appear more comfortable. Cutaway Tuxedo: These go well with men of all statures. Cutaway refers to the front edges of the coat sloping diagonally from the waist and forming tails in the back. These are the most appropriate option for daytime weddings. Tails: Tails are mainly reserved for ultra-formal and traditional weddings. Featuring a severe break between front and back, tails should be avoided by shorter or stockier grooms. High or Low Vest: High vests are typically good for taller men with longer torsos, as they extend up the torso higher than a regular vest and go well with a high-button coat. Low vests are appropriate for most men, as men of all body types can wear them. Peaked Lapel: An extension of the coat collar, the peaked lapel is often a good choice for a shorter groom, as it typically makes the body appear longer and leaner. Shawl Collar: Unlike a traditional collar, shawl collars do not come to a point, making this a difficult choice to make depending on body type. In general, a wider groom will want to stick with a wider shawl collar, as a thin collar will make him look larger. A more svelte groom should stick with a thinner collar, as a wider one will have a cartoonish effect. Mandarin or Banded Collar: This is the collar type that appears to not be a collar at all, as it just wraps around the neck without any protruding points and is never worn with a necktie. For grooms with short or thick necks, this style should definitely be avoided, as it will appear as though you are bursting out of the top of your shirt. A more slender groom, though, can wear a mandarin collar.

Choosing the right style of tuxedo can depend on how formal the event is and what time it's taking place. Grooms should also consider their body type when choosing the elements of their outfit.

Wording Your Wedding Invitations

The purpose of your wedding invitation is to announce the time and place of your wedding ceremony and reception. However, the invitation also sets the style and mood of your wedding. The wording and design of the invitation is a good indication as to what the guests can expect to wear and what they can expect the ceremony to be like. Whether you are planning a traditional wedding or a non-traditional wedding, you should create an invitation that sets the right mood for your big event. Examples of wording you can use for your wedding invitation are as follows: Formal Wedding Invitation - Mr. and Mrs. John David Jones request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Cathy Ann, to Mr. David George Smith Saturday, the tenth of May, at two o’clock at the Evangelical Free Church. The church is located at 123 Main St., Anytown, Michigan. Formal, Religious Wedding Invitation – Mr. and Mrs. John David Jones are pleased to invite you to join in a Christian celebration of the

Wording for Special Situations - For special situations such as divorced, widowed, or remarried parents, some different wording rules apply. If the bride’s mother is widowed and has not remarried, she should be referred to as Mrs. John Jones. If the bride’s mother is divorced and not remarried, she should be referred to as Ms. Joyce Jones or Ms. Joyce (maiden name) Jones. If the bride’s mother is widowed and has remarried, you should use the bride’s mother's surname that she is currently using and the bride’s surname. An example would be: Mrs. Joyce Brown requests the honor of your presence at the marriage of her daughter, Cathy Ann Jones, etc. If the bride’s mother is divorced or widowed and the wedding is hosted by the bride’s mother and stepfather, you may use the following wording: Mr. and Mrs. Harold James Brown request the honor of your presence at the marriage of her (or their) daughter, Cathy Ann Jones, etc. If the bride’s parents are divorced (whether remarried or not) but are

2011 Wedding Planner both hosting the wedding, you would list both names as co-hosts. The bride’s mother’s name should appear ďŹ rst. An example is: Mrs. Joyce Brown and Mr. John Jones request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter, Cathy Ann Jones, etc. If the bride’s parents are separated but not divorced, there is no need to point it out on the invitation. Their names should simply be listed as Mr. and Mrs. John Jones. If the bride has no family that is hosting the wedding and it is given by friends, the following wording can be used: Mr. and Mrs. George Black request the honor of your presence at the marriage of Miss Cathy Jones to Mr. David Smith, etc. Generally, you would not use Miss or Mr. before the bride and groom’s name, but it is appropriate if friends host the wedding. If the bride and groom host the wedding, you might use the following wording: The honor of your presence is requested at the marriage of Miss Cathy Ann Jones to Mr. David George Smith, etc. If the bride is widowed or divorced, it is appropriate to use Mrs. or Ms. before her ďŹ rst name and the bride’s maiden name, then current surname. For example: she may be referred to as Mrs. Cathy Jones Brown. If she is divorced and is using her maiden name, she can be referred to as Ms. Cathy Ann Jones or simply Cathy Ann Jones. If the bride and groom are getting remarried and their married chil-

dren are hosting the wedding, hosts should be listed in alphabetical order by last name. For instance: Mr. and Mrs. George David Smith, Mr. and Mrs. James Allen Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Matthew James Thompson request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their parents, Ms. Cathy Ann Thompson and Mr. David George Smith, etc. If the groom’s parents are hosting the wedding the wording could be: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith request the honor of your presence at the marriage of Miss Cathy Ann Jones to their son, David George Smith. If both sets of parents are divorced, it can make it difďŹ cult to ďŹ t everyone’s name on the small invitation. Because there are so many people involved, we will suggest the following wording: Together with their families OR Together with their parents, Cathy Ann Jones and David George Smith invite you to celebrate their marriage etc. Your local printer, newspaper, or wedding specialist has a great variety of styles and selection of wedding invitations. Select the style that reects what your wedding ceremony is meant to be and use this guide to help determine the proper wording to invite your friends and family to share in your special day. Planning 2011 Wedding Planner

YOUR BIG

Planning a wedding can be big undertaking. Many times the course of planning from the moment of engagement to the wedding day can stretch over a full year. It requires patience, budgeting, and organization. A wedding binder or filing system can help keep receipts and information all in one place. Additionally, use these steps as guidelines for your own event.

10 to 12 Months Before

Announce the Great News! Many couples enjoy having an engagement party to announce that they're planning a life together and to introduce their respective families. Keep your guest list to the immediate family, including grandparents, aunts and uncles, and first cousins. You may also want to invite close friends. If finances are an issue, consider a brunch or a cocktail party with appetizers instead of a full sit-down dinner. Set the Date. Once you decide you're getting married, you should consider when you want the big day to occur. This can depend on what month of the year you enjoy or when you think you may have saved enough to cover the cost of the wedding itself. Prime months are in the spring and summer. If you want to have your wedding relatively soon, you may find that certain dates are already booked for houses of worship and reception halls. You may have more choices if you pick an off-peak time of the year, such as January, March, November, or December. Establish a Budget. If your parents will be contributing financially to your wedding, schedule a meeting with both sets of parents to determine the size of your wedding ceremony and reception. Since your budget will determine just about every aspect of your wedding, sitting down and determining what you can spend and developing a savings plan should be first and foremost. The scope of your wedding will depend largely upon what you can afford. Many of today's weddings range from $25,000 to $35,000. Make a list of all the costs you will have: wardrobe, clergy fees, reception hall, flowers, photography, gifts for wedding party, transportation, honeymoon, etc. Figure that the majority of the costs will be around $2,000 each (excluding the reception site, honeymoon and ceremony). Seeing the end cost will help you develop a plan for saving. Keep in mind that many of the payments and deposits are made over time, so you won't have to come up with the lump sum all at one time.

Six to Nine Months Before

Select the Wedding and Reception Sites. Once you have a date and budget, your next step is to make arrangements with the church, synagogue, or other place where the ceremony will take place. At the same time, arrange for the officiant of your choice. Some houses of worship require classes or retreats before a wedding ceremony to prepare the couple for marriage in a religious sense. Make sure these tasks are completed. When looking at reception locations, it helps to have a preliminary idea of how many people you'll be inviting to the

DAY

wedding so you can compare costs and decide on room sizes. Certain places offer lower rates for Friday and Sunday than Saturday night. This can help to keep your reception more budget-friendly. Book Services and Make Travel Plans. This is the time when you want to start booking some services, such as a florist, caterer, a DJ or band, and a photographer. Secure your date for services with these people shortly after you reserve your ceremony and reception site. Vendors will likely require a deposit and balance paid before the wedding. Also, this is a good time to inform any guests who will be traveling significant distances of the date of your wedding. The earlier your guests can book a flight, the less expensive that flight will be. Plan Your Honeymoon. It used to be the groom's task to book the honeymoon, but most couples do it together these days. Book the honeymoon and apply for passports if necessary several months in advance or enlist the help of a travel agent to do it for you. The earlier you book your honeymoon, the more likely you will save travel dollars. Choose Your Wedding Wardrobe. The bride and the ladies in the wedding will need to browse for and decide on gowns roughly six to eight months before the wedding. This allows time for the dresses to be ordered and alterations to be made. Gentleman can typically shop for tuxedo rentals a month before the wedding.

Four to Five Months Before

Establish Bridal Registries. If you want to select gifts from a specific store, register for them as far in advance as possible. This way if people want to give you gifts from the registry in advance of the wedding, they'll know what to choose. Definitely register by two to three months before the wedding, because this is when the bridal shower is typically held. Select Your Stationery. Order your invitations, save-the-date cards, etc. five to six months before the wedding so you have time to check the proofs and ensure they're printed correctly. Wedding invitations are usually mailed out one to two months prior to the event. It is customary to stamp the R.S.V.P. card so that guests can simply put it in the mail. Confirm That Your Wedding Wardrobe Is on Schedule. Check to see if all of the bridesmaids have ordered their gowns and start looking for a tuxedo for the groom and groomsmen. Order Wedding Rings. If you haven't done so already, purchase your wedding rings and let any other people you'd like to participate in your wedding (ushers, readers during the ceremony, etc.) know of your intentions. Select Wedding Cake. Sample a number of different bakeries and their style of cakes before ultimately making a decision.

Two to Three Months Before

Finalize Your Guest List and Mail Your Invitations.

How to use the Wedding Planner This wedding planner was created to help the bride and groom-to-be schedule and keep track of the many appointments and things that need to be done when planning the perfect wedding. To best use this planner, start on page 106 with the month of your wedding, then work backwards (if your wedding is in July 2012 start with July 2012, preceeded by June 2012, May 2012, etc.) And as a special reminder, the advertisers in this wedding planner would love to be a part of your special day! For wedding announcements, forms, readers can log on to www.engleonline.com. Forms can be printed out for completion by mail or filed online, with or without a photo attached. Simply click on “Reader Services. Best Wishes!

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

If your guest list includes a considerable amount of people who are spread out geographically, mail the invitations as close to 12 weeks in advance as possible. Purchase Accessories and Gifts for the Wedding Party. Now is the time to find all your wedding accessories such as the ring pillow, candles, etc. Since it is tradition to provide gifts for those in the wedding party as well as the parents of the bride and groom, allow plenty of time to decide on and purchase those gifts. Just to be safe, finalize all transportation, both to and from the wedding and to the airport for your honeymoon. Make Seating Arrangements. This can be one of the most challenging parts of wedding planning. Once the majority of your R.S.V.P.s are in hand, you'll want to think about seating. Most reception halls will give you a seating map that you can use to determine seating. If you are a visual person, you may want to enlarge the map and actually cut out the names of guests to stick and re-stick in different areas of the room until the seating is just right. There are also computer programs that can help you with seating tasks. This is also a good time to finalize your menu choices for your guests.

One to Two Months Before

Arrange for the Rehearsal Dinner. If your family prefers to host a small gathering for close family and friends after the wedding rehearsal on the night before the wedding, this is a good time to order any food or drinks you might want to serve that night, or make a restaurant reservation. Decide on the Details of the Wedding Ceremony. With your fiance, schedule a special time to talk about your wedding vows and plan the actual ceremony. Finalize the readings you'd prefer and mail them out to anyone who has agreed to do a reading.

Three to Four Weeks Before

Confirm, Confirm, Confirm! Check on your honeymoon arrangements and see if your wedding rings are ready. This is also when you should get your marriage license. Take your birth certificates with you and, if applicable, any divorce decrees or deceased spouse's death certificates. Check the guest list to see who has and hasn't R.S.V.P.ed. For those who have yet to respond, you might want to contact them so you can get a closer idea of what the head count will be. You should also prepare and order your wedding program around this time. Pay Balances Due. In the last months to weeks before the wedding, most balances will be due for the services. The reception hall will want a final seating count and you will be picking up your gown. When paying these balances, it's also a good idea to confirm with musicians, photographers and limo companies.

picks up their attire. Also, finalize your vows and confirm all wedding-day details such as transportation, photo schedules, and addresses. And don't forget to pack for your honeymoon.

The Day Before

Rehearse and Relax. This is mainly when you rehearse for the ceremony and make any final confirmations you might have to make. Everything should be ready, so relax and enjoy the day. Spend the day enjoying your friends and family. Pamper yourself. Tomorrow will be very busy, and you must be rested and ready to enjoy your big day.

Your Wedding Day

Enjoy! Have a hearty breakfast. As the day goes on you may not take adequate time to eat. The bride should have her makeup and hair done about three hours before the wedding. Begin dressing one hour before the wedding. The groom should give the wedding ring and the marriage certificate to the best man to bring to the ceremony. Put fees for musicians and pastor in separate envelopes. Music should start 30 minutes before the ceremony. Five minutes before the ceremony, seat the groom's parents. Immediately before the processional march, seat the bride's mother. At the reception, the groom should dance first with the bride and then with her mother, his new mother-in-law.

After the Wedding

Wrapping It Up. After the pre-wedding flurry, there are still a few details to attend to before you can put away your wedding planner for good. Send the announcement and wedding photo to local and hometown newspapers (www.news.engleonline.com). And write and mail those thank-you notes in a timely fashion. Copyright 2008 Publishers Edge.

One to Two Weeks Before

Finalize All Details. Get a final attendance count and submit it to the caterer as soon as you know of it, while also providing a final seating chart. Pick up the wedding gown and tuxedo. Make sure the wedding party
