American Friends of ENO
ENO has enjoyed a close affiliation with the USA since the company’s first groundbreaking tour in 1984. Many of our operas are produced in collaboration with American opera houses and American singers, directors and conductors continue to play a vital role in many of ENO’s productions. Our commitment to nurturing young British talent is at the heart of ENO’s work. ENO Harewood Artists provides training and support for singers at the beginning of their professional careers, giving them an opportunity to develop and learn as they take on roles. ENO Contemporary was founded in 2005 to directly support ENO’s most innovative projects including new commissions, off-site initiatives and artistic collaborations. This season, ENO Contemporary is supporting our new production of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten and have access to a series of early rehearsals.

Philip Glass’s mesmerising Akhnaten explores the life and religious convictions of the pharaoh Akhnaten. ENO staged the premiere in 1985 and we are delighted to bring the opera back to the Coliseum in a brand new production from Phelim McDermott (The Perfect American, Satyagraha).
In June 2016 former ENO Music Director Edward Gardner will return to the London Coliseum to conduct Wagner’s epoch-making masterpiece, reuniting with awardwinning director Daniel Kramer. The production design will be created by renowned artist and Turner Prize winner Anish Kapoor and outstanding tenor Stuart Skelton makes a welcome return to ENO to sing Tristan.
In order to bring this iconic opera to the stage we have formed a special group of Production Supporters who have the opportunity to delve deeper into the heart the production and enjoy the range of benefits below with a donation of £1,000 or above. The London Coliseum, commissioned by the great theatrical impresario Oswald Stoll and designed by the flamboyant theatre architect Frank Matcham, opened as a Music Hall in 1904. It is considered to be Matcham’s masterpiece and is a sensational example of Edwardian architecture in the grand style. It quickly became known as ‘The Peoples Palace’; a theatre that was affordable to enter but which would also inspire a sense of wonder and excitement.
