A quirky quest, community in crisis, the fall of a Pharaoh, the loneliest lover, an all-powerful passion, a stepmother’s shame. What’s on in Spring and Summer 2016
Welcome to English National Opera
We’re delighted to introduce ENO’s Spring and Summer seasons, featuring a range of timeless and unforgettable stories, performed in our own language and full of moments that will inspire, surprise and captivate. ENO has a global reputation for forging groundbreaking collaborations across art forms to keep opera fresh and exciting. This summer, we’re working with renowned artist Anish Kapoor who is designing a new production of Wagner’s epic love story Tristan and Isolde. Directed by Daniel Kramer, conducted by former ENO Music Director Edward Gardner and starring Stuart Skelton and Heidi Melton in the title roles, this will undoubtedly be one of the operatic events of the year. Our other new productions this season include Philip Glass’s iconic opera, Akhnaten, which returns to ENO in a spectacular new staging directed by
Phelim McDermott, and Bellini’s Norma, directed by Christopher Alden. You can also look forward to revivals of Simon McBurney’s inventive and visually stunning production of The Magic Flute, the late Anthony Minghella’s breathtaking Madam Butterfly and to close the season, David Alden’s profoundly moving and Olivier Award-winning interpretation of Janáček’s Jenůfa. ENO is founded on the belief that opera of the highest quality should be accessible to everyone. Across all of our performances this season we’ve made at least 500 tickets available at £20 or less, ensuring that as many people as possible are able to experience world-class musical storytelling in the magical surroundings of the London Coliseum. Thank you for supporting us and we look forward to welcoming you to ENO soon.

Set in an ever-so English 1930s seaside hotel, Miller’s Marx Brothers-inspired song-and-dance Mikado has long been a popular hit with audiences of all ages. The combination of Gilbert’s virtuosic wit, Sullivan’s memorable melodies and Miller’s witty antics is irresistible. A cast of youthful talent and seasoned veterans has been assembled for this revival. Distinguished bass Robert Lloyd sings the genial Mikado for the first time, 46 years after making his ENO debut, while Richard Suart, the acknowledged master of the Lord High Executioner’s pathological ‘little list’, returns as Ko-Ko. ENO Harewood Artists Mary Bevan and Anthony Gregory play the lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, while ENO Mackerras Conducting Fellow Fergus Macleod makes his company debut. ‘A glorious production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best comic opera’ Daily Express Pre-performance talk: 3 Dec, 5.15–6pm, £5/£2.50 concs

Complicite artistic director Simon McBurney’s five-star production of Mozart’s timeless classic returns to ENO for its first revival. Award-winning director Christopher Alden (Partenope, Rigoletto) returns to ENO for our first-ever production of Bellini’s indisputable bel canto masterpiece. Celebrated for its finely shaped melodies and exquisite arias (notably ‘Casta diva’), Norma is full of ravishing music. Alden’s critically admired production sets the action in a rural community during the late nineteenth century, in a staging described, when seen at Opera North, as ‘alive, energising and absorbing’ (Daily Telegraph). Rising star soprano Marjorie Owens, a recent Aida at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, makes her UK operatic debut in the demanding title role. Exploring the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh, it forms the last of Philip Glass’s trilogy of ‘portrait’ operas in which he explores the lives of figures in the fields of science (Einstein), politics (Gandhi) and religion (Akhnaten). This hypnotically mesmerising work uses texts drawn from ancient hymns, prayers, letters and inscriptions sung in their original Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian. Its UK premiere was at ENO in 1985, and it has not been seen in London for almost 30 years. Following the success of his ENO productions of Glass’s Satyagraha and The Perfect American, Improbable’s Phelim McDermott returns to direct Akhnaten with the theatrical flair that characterises all of his work. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo sings the challenging title role for the first time, while conductor Karen Kamensek, a specialist in Glass’s music, makes her ENO debut. ‘An inspired marriage of sight and sound’ The Independent on Satyagraha Pre-performance talk: 8 Mar, 5.15–6pm, £5/£2.50 concs

From the opening bars of the prelude with its famous Tristan chord, Wagner’s powerful opera is one of the most significant pieces in the repertoire. ENO’s first new production of Tristan and Isolde since 1996 is directed by ‘theatre’s most exciting young director’ (Daily Telegraph) Daniel Kramer. His previous work at ENO includes Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Punch and Judy at the Young Vic, for which he won the South Bank Show Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera. For this spectacular staging, Kramer collaborates with designer Anish Kapoor, one of the most influential sculptors of his generation. Following 2015’s Olivier Award-winning production of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, this thrilling score is conducted by former ENO Music Director Edward Gardner, ‘whose immaculate sense of balance and flow denotes a great Wagner conductor’ (The Stage). An exceptional cast is led by the outstanding Wagnerian Heldentenor Stuart Skelton as Tristan, with American dramatic soprano Heidi Melton as Isolde. Its gripping story of love, sacrifice and redemption explores the stigma of pregnancy out of wedlock against the backdrop of a small, claustrophobic community. Directed by David Alden (Peter Grimes, Otello), this is the second revival of his acclaimed staging which was the winner of two Olivier Awards in 2006, including Best New Production. Alden updates the setting to an isolated 20th century industrial estate in the Eastern Bloc, giving the story a contemporary edge that makes it feel even more relevant for today’s audiences. Janáček’s powerful and accessible score is conducted by ENO’s Music Director Mark Wigglesworth. American soprano Laura Wilde makes her role debut as Jenůfa, with Michaela Martens as her stepmother the Kostelnička.
