Tangled tales, perilous passions, fractured friendships, dangerous deceptions and love in all its guises. What’s on in 2016/17

Welcome to English National Opera

Our 2016/17 season showcases ENO’s extraordinary range of work – from the return of beloved classics to exciting new productions and a world premiere. We will open the season with a new Don Giovanni starring Christopher Purves directed, in his Mozart debut, by Richard Jones. Our second new production is Alban Berg’s Lulu brought to the stage by the great visual artist William Kentridge. Both productions will be conducted by Mark Wigglesworth so expect extraordinary things from our Olivier Award-winning Orchestra and Chorus. In the spring ENO will welcome an exciting debut by a unique combination of British talent. Ryan Wigglesworth, our composer-in-residence, presents his first opera at the London Coliseum based on Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. This piece will be directed by awardwinning actor Rory Kinnear in his operatic directorial debut. This is the must-see operatic event of 2017. This season we also look forward to celebrating the work of Jonathan Miller. Over the past 38 years he has directed 15 productions at ENO and we are forever indebted to his artistic contribution. We will reflect on his work in November with a very special evening, Marvellous Miller, with scenes from some of his classic productions and star guest appearances. Later in the season there are more reasons to be reminded of Jonathan Miller’s contribution to ENO with a revival of his fantastic Mafia-inspired Rigoletto in February 2017. Other revivals this season include Mike Leigh’s swashbuckling production of The Pirates of Penzance, Catherine Malfitano’s popular and beautiful Tosca, Penny Woolcock’s stunning The Pearl Fishers, and Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-winning Partenope. In summer 2017 we look forward to presenting work outside of the London Coliseum. See page 20 for further information and keep an eye on our website for future announcements. For 2016/17 I am delighted to announce that we will continue to make 500 tickets available for every ENO opera performance for £20 or less. We will be making further reductions in prices as well as improving our access schemes to ensure everyone is able to experience extraordinary opera at an affordable price. Thank you for supporting us and we look forward to welcoming you to ENO soon.
