Symop sets out on the conquest of Indonesia ! At the end of November, Symop and Ubifrance held two Symposiums in Jakarta and Surabaya on Java Island. These were highly successfully with a total attendance of around 150 papermakers at the events.

I

t was in Southeast Asia’s leading economy, the world’s 9th largest producer of pulp and 7th largest producer of paper*, where Symop’s “Paper” group, in cooperation with Ubifrance, decided to present its latest technologies. The world’s fourth most populous country (250 million inhabitants), Indonesia is a high potential market for the Syndicat des Machines et Technologies de Production (French Association for Manufacturing Technologies), with that country’s papermakers being, in terms of capital equipment, extremely reliant on imports. The rate of growth of the Indonesian economy in 2013 is expected to have dipped below 6 %, having achieved 6.2 % in 2012. The outlook for the expansion of the paper and board industry however remains very promising. In 2012, the installed pulp and paper production capacity was, respectively, 7.9 Mt and 12.9 Mt with an actual output of 6.1 Mt and 10.7 Mt. In the same year, Indonesia also exported 3.1 Mt of pulp and 4.2 Mt of paper. The Seminar was a huge success, having attracted around 150 papermakers in all. Sponsored by the Embassy of France in Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministries of Industry and Trade, the Governor of East-Java and the Honorary Consul of France in Surabaya, it was also organised in collaboration with the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Association (APKI), with the support of the Bandung Pulp & Paper Centre, the Bandung Technology Academy and the Indonesian French Chamber for Trade and Industry. Indonesian visitors to the event proved greatly interested in the latest French technology offers, as well as being keen, in turn, to increase their exports to Europe. They were also extremely interested in information on STIVEXMSREP ERH IRIVK] IJ½GMIRG] UYEPMX] XLI VIG]GPMRK SJ ½FVIW ERH XLI IRZMVSRQIRX MR XLI widest sense. On September 30 2013, a “Voluntary Partnership Agreement” (VPA) was signed into law by Indonesia and the European Union, combating illegal logging and promoting licensed exports from the Indonesian Archipelago to Europe. During these Symposiums, the

managers of Indonesian companies highlighted the efforts being made in terms of sustainable forest management and traceability. A programme for new plantations and sustainable development is being implemented, alongside the allocation of additional land dedicated for this purpose. The country, thanks to its tropical equatorial climate, has the advantage of a much shorter harvesting cycle (around six years). Franck Rettmeyer, President of the Symop “Paper” Group, introduced the organisation, a member of FIM (Federation of Mechanical Industries). There are 20 companies in the “Paper” Group, employing 2,000 people and with a turnover of €150 M, with 80 % from exports. Its member companies can provide solutions for all paper industry processes and requirements. Some of the companies in EXXIRHERGI [IVI EPWS LSTMRK XS ½RH EKIRXW In turn, Daniel Gomez, Director of the Paper Industry Technical Association (Atip), outlined the mission of the association : to unify, to promote R&D and new technologies, to facilitate access to technical data, etc. Atip works closely with the Paper Technical Centre (CTP) in Grenoble and Grenoble INP-Pagora (International Engineering School of Paper, Print Media and Biomaterials). Daniel Gomez also gave an overview of the French paper industry (in 2012) : 80 companies, 100 mills, 150 paper machines, 15,200 employees and turnover of €6.9 billion. Gérard Mortha, Head of International Relations at Grenoble INP-Pagora, then introduced this school founded in 1907, as well as the LGP2 laboratory, a CNRS entity. There have already been around 2,000 graduates from this well-respected school ; 17 % of whom work outside of France and 25 % are at CEO or Senior Manager level.
