Up close with HBSDealer’s new hardware editor Ken Clark Editor in Chief Let’s meet Tim Burke. He’s the newest member of the HBSDealer editorial team, an experienced journalist, a pro who has already hit the ground running (see articles on page 10, 12 and 16, plus others sprinkled throughout the digital pages of HBSDealer.com), a Chicago native who survived a gauntlet of interviews and recruitment-process challenges before winning the confidence of HBSDealer and parent company EnsembleIQ, “Solving big problems, Inspiring bold ideas.” Tim will lead HBSDealer’s coverage of Tim Burke, HBSDealer’s hardware stores, new hardware editor. and play a key role in our double-threat attack. On one wing is Tim. On the other is veteran LBM editor Andy Carlo. The team is now stacked, and expectations run high. Tim happily made himself available for the following edited Q&A. Q: Tell us about yourself. A: Love music, both loud rock and some jazz. Love the water — swim, snorkel, sail boats and walking the beaches too. Also played hockey for many years, started in college and then in a league. Q:We can’t have you taking hard checks. A: Now I just watch.
A: I’ve always been able to write, starting at a pretty young age. I wrote my first novel at around 14, a hand-written 250-page story. I had success in my college creative writing classes and went on to write and edit for a living. Q: What was the novel about? A: A small town street racer who meets a mysterious competitor and they have a showdown race. Sort of Speed Racer-esque. I was very young. Q: You’ve covered markets as diverse as crime, healthcare and fraternal societies. You were the chief at American Drycleaner magazine, serving thousands of independent businesses on Main Streets across the country. What do you like about this work? A: It’s cool to meet people and find out about what they do, and then put together words and photos to translate their message in a way that informs and entertains the reader—help them learn something new. That’s what it’s all about. Q: Any other thoughts for our readers? A: “Sure. Being onboard with Hardware & Building Supply Dealer is a terrific feeling, and my goal is to expand my knowledge of the market and help make a difference. I am already meeting great people, and I’m looking forward to meeting more at the upcoming National Hardware Show in Las Vegas. I hope to see you all there.” Say hello to Tim any time at Tburke@ensembleiq.com. HBSD

National Hardware Show enters the zone When you walk into the National Hardware Show (NHS), being held Oct. 21-23, in Las Vegas, you won’t be stepping into the Twilight Zone, but you will experience a new type of futuristic realm — a discovery zone for hardware innovation called “Habitat.” The new pavilion will reside at the show’s main entrance, positioned to be the first area attendees experience as they enter the Las Vegas Convention Center’s sparkling, new West Hall. The NHS announced the debut of Habitat for its 75th edition show, as a new platform that delivers future outlooks, product innovation showcases and actionable insights for business resilience. The pavilion will live both online and on-site at the show. “Habitat is the intersection of merchandise and mission — a platform for industry members to discover new product innovations and source inspiration from one another,” said Beth Casson, event leader, NHS. “From environmental innovations to STAT OF THE MONTH

In August, that figure hit $356,700, up 14.9 percent over August 2020, according to the National Association of Realtors. “High home prices make for an unbalanced market, but prices would normalize with more supply,” NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said.

Focused on the future and designed for discovery, the NHS added, Habitat is a new platform that aims to explore the new ideas and technologies that are impacting our definition of the home and how we live.

Market attendees, welcome back Something important happened in late September: hardware and building supply dealers returned to convention halls in Orlando, Indianapolis, Chicago, among other places, celebrating a return to the live trade-show circuit, face-to-face meetings and to see-for-themselves what’s new and noteworthy in the aisles of hardware conventions. The act of just being there was celebrated across the board: • From True Value’s Chicago Reunion: “I like getting back out,” said Jessica Simpson, owner of Shoppers True Value Hardware in South Portland, Maine, as she pushed her cart along an aisle near the Farm & Ranch section. “It’s been two years. It’s been too long. I’ve been coming to Reunion for 25 years. I need to visually see products. We buy lots of items and we’re looking at lawn and garden.”
• From Do it Best’s market in Indianapolis: Attending the fall market “is more than an opportunity for our members to build their businesses,” said President and CEO Dan Starr. “It’s a chance to build relationships with other members, our vendors, and our team.” • From Ace’s Convention in Orlando: “Opening the show floor Tuesday morning to greet the rush of a couple thousand eager Ace retailers was exhilarating,” said John Surane, executive vice president, chief merchandising and sales officer at Ace Hardware Corporation. “It was a major step

Eye on Retail: At Home goes private The $2.8 billion acquisition of Plano, Texas-based At Home Group Inc. is a done deal. The fast-growing value home-décor retailer has been acquired by privateequity firm Hellman & Friedman in an all-cash transaction valued at $2.8 billion, including the assumption of debt. With the completion of the acquisition, initially announced in May 2021, At Home’s common stock ceased trading. At Home has been expanding its footprint nationwide. The company recently announced that it opened three stores in July. Two of the stores are on the East Coast in Princeton, N.J., and Abingdon, Md., and one store is on the West Coast in Temecula, Calif.
“This transaction will allow us to partner with H&F to help continue our store expansion, grow our offering and strengthen our position as the leading retailer of home décor,” said Lee Bird, chairman and CEO of At Home. “I am confident H&F will help strengthen our business.”

Colorful everyday items, geometries and faces of locals the artist saw passing by on the street adorn the side of this Ace Hardware in Skokie, Ill. Muralist Jeff Zimmermann (on left) shakes hands with store owner Paul McGivern.
Mural at Skokie Ace Hardware ‘nails it’ Artist’s vision at one suburban Chicago store blends hardware tools, pop images and citizens’ smiling faces. By Tim Burke
A
n Ace Hardware store in Skokie, Ill., allowed Chicago muralist Jeff Zimmermann free reign to create an eyecatching mural on its exterior wall by combining everyday items found in a hardware store along with various pop imagery and the faces of locals. On this approximately 60-foot-long by 12-foot-high brick “canvas,” giant nails assemble themselves in mid-air at one end of the stretch of building exterior. A hammer floats vertically at the other end. Positioned prominently in between are the large and distinct faces depicting real townspeople making eye-contact with all who pass. “The people’s faces depicted in the mural were picked by the artist randomly from citizens he saw just passing by on the street,” related Paul McGivern, Skokie Ace Hardware

owner. “That was pretty cool.” The mural was created in 2018, after the Village of Skokie approached McGivern with the initial concept. “I was wide open to the idea and I said go for it,” recalled the owner. “I didn’t make any input on the design. The artist did it all. I did look up examples of what the artist had painted previously. The Village said if I didn’t like what was created, they could paint over it. But I thought it turned out great.” Visitors to the location agreed. “People stop and take photos all the time,” McGivern said. “And as far as I’m aware, we are the only store in the Ace Hardware company that has done this.” The mural set their business apart in the downtown, he added. Already unique, this Ace Hardware has been part of the local community for more than 100 years, the store’s website noted. Zimmermann’s contemporary pop culture blend of local faces and common hardware tools has created a lasting impression on local citizens and visitors. “I’ve heard nothing but positives about the mural,” said McGivern.

Following up on the Spirit of Life Award Lowe’s Bill Boltz looks back on his role with City of Hope. The Hardware and homebuilding industry’s fundraising contributions to City of Hope’s patient care and lifesaving research exceeded $5 million in the past year. But one can’t put a figure on what it meant for City of Hope’s Spirit of Life Award honoree Bill Boltz. The Lowe’s executive VP of merchandising shared his thoughts on a memorable year of giving back. When you speak to someone about City of Hope, what do you share with them? This year marks my 39th year in the home improvement industry and throughout my career, even back to my early days that began with Sears, I’ve had such a deep level of respect and admiration for the City of Hope because of the incredible work they do. They’re an organization driven by philanthropy! Contributions and donations are what fuel their research to treat and cure cancer, diabetes and other serious illnesses that impact millions of people. I’m just really honored to have the chance to be a part of their mission… and if I get asked about City of Hope and the work they do, it’s an honor to share the stories of that great work. Since the virtual Spirit of Life event in May, how has your knowledge of City of Hope increased? What did you discover about City of Hope during your campaign? I’ve had the personal privilege of knowing
HBSDealer.com
and partnering with City of Hope for more than 30 years and, in that time, I have come to know the direct impact the organizations’ work has on the fight to eradicate cancer and other lifethreatening diseases. However, what I didn’t know until my Spirit of Life campaign this year was exactly how they approach research and development. It’s a unique approach — one they call “Bench to Bedside” because of how they investigate, discover and develop new therapies,
then manufacture the compound right on their campus. Speed is so critical when you’re a patient looking for a cure…so, this just absolutely blew me away when I learned about it. Regarding the virtual Spirit of Life event, what stands out in your memory? What was the highlight of the evening? As much as I would have loved to have done the gala in person, it ended up being just an awesome event. Lowe’s is celebrating our 100th birthday this year so, to be recognized by the Hardware and Home Improvement industry at the same time made it even better. Before my acceptance speech, I was surprised with a video compilation from different members of my family — my wife and stepsons, my daughters, my sister and my mom all snuck around behind my back to record
messages for me and it really took me aback. It was pretty special. You and the Lowe’s team had an awesome campaign — with the success of the virtual Spirit of Life gala, Miles for Hope and the Annual Lowe’s Golf Classic, which was one of the first in-person events hosted by City of Hope. How has the success of this campaign made you feel over these last few months? In one word: proud. My team at Lowe’s is just awesome and everyone really rallied behind this cause, along with our vendor community…they all were there right there together. I’m so impressed by everyone’s partnership and support. I’ve shared this before but I, like so many others, have had my life forever changed by the disease City of Hope works so hard to defeat. I recently lost my father to cancer, and both my mother and sister are cancer survivors. So, it really has been a personal cause for me, like it is for so many others. And to have had such an impactful and successful campaign as the 2021 Spirit of Life Honoree makes me incredibly proud. I definitely feel like “we left it better than we found it!”
City of Hope’s Spirt of Life honoree Bill Boltz, Lowe’s executive VP of merchandising.

A LEGENDARY HAMMER STRIKES AGAIN Our Golden Hammer Award honorees stand up for innovation and value By HBSDealer Staff or decades, the Golden Hammer Awards have played a role in the home improvement industry, recognizing the best of the best of home improvement products. The Golden program has evolved over the years – in the early 1980s, it even recognized the best of home center television commercials. Earlier in this century, giants of the industry were recognized with Golden Hammers in the “Retailer of the Year” category. In 2019, the Golden Hammers roared back to life, establishing a system and criteria to identify products deserving of the title, thus reviving the best-of-the-best tradition. HBSDealer’s editorial staff solicited nominations from across the industry for potential honorees and products that have been launched after May 31, 2020. The following criteria were used to judge each entry:
Innovation — features, technology, differentiation and benefits;
Value — Including relative price, consumer relevance, and functional practicality;
Shelf appeal — clarity of message, and overall desirability of the product within its category.
After careful deliberation… the following products were deemed “Golden Hammer” worthy. “It’s a great feeling to bring luster back to the Golden Hammer Awards and see the industry participate in the program,” said Ken Clark, editor in chief of Hardware & Building Supply Dealer. “And this year’s class of honorees are up to the task of delivering value and innovation worthy of the ‘Golden Hammer’ award.”

The latest batterypowered rebar tying tool from MAX Co Ltd., the TwinTier, can form 4,000 ties per charge. The durability of the tools has improved due to the continuous R&D efforts of our over 200 engineers and the range of the rebar tying capability has significantly increased as well. Traditionally, the RB655 has been the tool with the largest rebar tying capacity since its launch in 2007, tying up to #8 on #9 rebar combinations. Contractors working with rebar, from rodbusters to electricians, are utilizing the large capacity of the RB611T to finish rebar tying faster for these larger rebar applications. The TwinTier platform ties at approx. ½ sec per tie due to its dual wire feeding mechanism. This tool platform also uses less wire per tie because of the wire pull-back mechanism (yields approx. 200 ties per spool when tying #5 on #5). These efficiencies make the RB611Ts very appealing, especially to contractors who have previously used older rebar tying tools. Maxusacorp.com

Beyond Allies: Building a network of support By Karen Jones, Head of Learning, Development, and DEI, Network of Executive Women
One of the most common things we hear at NEW, particularly from men, is that they just don’t know where to begin supporting women — or how to go about it in ways that really make a tangible difference. There’s always more to learn about allyship, and the conversation is changing all the time. What we do know is how important allies are to advancing women’s equity. Allies can become sponsors and mentors, and create change in policy and culture that have vast ripple effects on the lives of working women. We developed our own allyship program, Beyond Allies, to meet this key need. “Research reveals that men often struggle to recognize gender discrimination and harassment in real time,” noted Beyond Allies Facilitator Tom Foley. “While 77 percent of men report doing ‘everything they can’ to support gender equality at work, only 41 percent of women agree... Men often remain on the sidelines rather than being true advocates and allies. Situational awareness is key, and demands training and preparedness.” Our Pilot NEW piloted Beyond Allies in 2020 and early 2021 with 276 men and women of all seniority levels and across many organizations. To say it ‘hit the spot’ for participants is

an understatement! One VP-level participant told us that it “Gave [them] as a veteran leader the inspiration to coach and develop the next generation.” An HR Partner stated that “the content and small group discussions were valuable in gaining insight into how I can effectively be an ally...it also gave me great perspective on how my male colleagues could be thinking about allyship and how I can support them.” Participants consistently mentioned how immediately actionable program content was — that they could take what they learned into the workplace and start making tangible change immediately! One manager stated that, immediately following the program, it “already has helped give me the language for a pay equity issue and [I am] looking forward to helping others in the future.”

The Key to Allyship Creating strong allies takes more than a single conversation. Our programming has been built to support men and women who want to do what they can at every step of their journey to taking real action. To build a network of strong allies at your organization, start with education, but make sure that education is backed up with real conversations and ongoing learning. One DEIB session won’t be enough to create momentum — it takes continuous pushing and learning, and a lifetime of listening. For more information about NEW’s Beyond Allies program, keep an eye on newonline.org/beyondallies for news on our next cohort, and follow us on social media @newnational.
“Creating strong allies takes more than a single conversation...” Karen Jones has more than 15 years of experience in Organization Effectiveness, Leadership Development, Talent Management, Inclusion Strategy Design and Execution, Change Leadership and Organizational Process Improvement. A big idea for startups in Boise Franklin Building Supply leads the charge to incubate a construction-industry hub.
Boise has a rich history of construction innovation.
Levi Smith is no stranger to startups. Before he became the president of Boise, Idaho-based Franklin Building Supply, the native Texan founded an Austin barbeque business that shipped craft briskets
nationwide to what he calls a “discerning base of customers.” More recently, Smith has combined his personal passion for startups and entrepreneurialism with a professional interest in cultivating economic

growth in Franklin Building Supply’s hometown of Boise. The result of those blended interests is a “vision for a home construction related startup ecosystem in Idaho.” In other words, Smith wants to help make Boise an ipso facto capital of building supply innovation. Think of the connection between Hollywood and filmmaking, or New York City and high finance, and that’s kind of the idea. “When I look at our industry, really no city or region in the United States has laid claim to being the place where construction industry startups, and specifically home-construction startups, call home,” Smith said. “And you need a concentration of talent, resources, capital, and all those things to really create the momentum.” And according to Smith and thanks to events like the upcoming Hacking for Homebuilding event, the pieces are coming together. Businesses in Boise and Idaho are throwing their support into cultivating startup companies that can provide specific solutions, while adding fuel to the general economy. Hacking for Homebuilding, which combines elements of televisions’

Shark Tank product pitch show and graduate level business classes, launched in 2020 with $17,500 prizes. The prize money has been doubled and the field has been expanded for the 2021 event, which builds to a climax during Boise Entrepreneur Week, the week of Oct. 18. One key feature of the contest is its reverse-pitch format. That means that entrepreneurs are giving industry-specific problems to solve. Among the 2021 Problem Statements, supplied by industry participants, are the following: Job site theft; Theft or vandalism of equipment trailers; Lack of visualization tools; No process to pass along legacy knowledge; Training new hires working remotely; Better training and accountability to installers; Reduce waste of unused materials; Tracking the last contractor to leave a property.
HBSDealer.com
Smith described that last problem statement as a particularly good example of the value of the reverse-pitch format. “You’d have to be in our industry for a while to realize that is a huge problem,” he said. “If you don’t know that the tile guys are done, for instance, you could lose a couple of costly days in the building cycle. You want to know who is the last person to leave. That is a unique problem in our industry.” With Franklin Building Supply playing a central role, the movement has attracted participation from Boise Cascade, Therma-Tru Doors, Weyerhaeuser, IKO, OrePac Building Products among others. It makes sense for Boise to step up and claim its position in building product innovation, he said. “A lot of people have done a tremendous amount of work to get the ecosystem where it is today,” he said. “Boise and Idaho have a deep connection to our industry. It’s rich in timber and rich in history when you think about companies like Boise Cascade, there’s a lot of building tradition. Many leading companies maintain roots here. Trus-Joist was invented here. Why shouldn’t this be the place to make construction startups viable.” Smith is upfront about his business interest in the movement taking place in Franklin Building Supply’s hometown. “Quite selfishly, I want our industry to do well,” Smith said. “Anything we can do to help our economy is helpful to our business. And anything we can do to expose our industry and our business to a broader talent pool is helpful to our business.”
Quality time with a Boise booster Boise, Idaho-based Franklin Building Supply President Levi Smith speaks with HBSDealer’s Ken Clark in a recent episode of the One-on-One Video Series. Smith and Franklin Building Supply, the state’s largest independent pro dealer, have played a central role in an effort to develop a startup ecosystem in Boise and Idaho. The idea is to create a hub of home-construction related startups, foster innovation and boost the general economy. The Hacking for Homebuilding program, produced in concert with Boise State University›s Venture College and College of Engineering, is one of the highlights of the effort. NLBMDA UPDATE NLBMDA members wary of vax mandate The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, explored the hot topic of vaccination mandates through a survey of its national membership. Background: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s plans to issue an Emergency Temporary Standard to require companies with 100 or more employees to either a) ensure full vaccination; or b) test unvaccinated employees on a weekly basis. Clearly, those conditions raise concerns among employers with 100 or more employees. Concerns range from the cost of weekly testing, the possible loss of employees, additional administrative burdens, and general business disruptions. Here are two questions, and results from respondents with 100-plus employees: Do you support President Biden’s SHA COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate for employers with 100+ employees and weekly testing for non-vaccinated employees?
18.7% Yes
81.3% No Will the new vaccine mandate result in a negative impact to your business and the ability to retain employees?
16.8 No
18.7% Yes Some respondents to the NLBMDA supported the new mandates. Reasons cited include the benefits of having a fully vaccinated staff and less resources spent on COVID recovery, sick leave, and contact tracing. Visit the NLBMDA at Dealer.org for more information.
