Hello Folks! We are happy that we are playing a notch above the traditional IT media by truly providing a compendium of Enterprise and Channel content through print, online and events. True to our belief the page has to be one and roles have to be different. Since the technology has changed over the time at an amazing speed and price, and positioning of the technology has become trivial. The customers’ needs have become the focal point. So realizing the CIOs needs and designing solutions is the most coveted work. Apart from the regular issues, we thought of bringing out quarterly supplement focused on the CIOs so that by the end of the year, we can cover the direction, action plan and the achievements of the CIOs and it can be of great value and benchmark to the industry. We named it as ‘The Titans’. For us - from the technology perspective, CIOs are the true Titans who help transform the organizations with their planning and decisions. They change their organizations from normal companies to the extra smart customer-first companies, which obviously leads to revenue growth and enhanced loyalty of their customers and suppliers. This year the focus of the CIOs has been digitization, implementation of cloud solutions and hiring right resources to support them in their technologies practices. So as a starting point, we are bringing out this first edition of the year, which covers the profiles, credentials and achievements of the CIOs. We are trying to cover the Top CIOs for this time but coming times as this supplement matures year on year, our aspiration is that we would have profiling of Top 100 CIOs as a regular feature. Similarly, the subsequent issues of the year would feature the high-profile projects and technologies but with the maturity of those issues we will provide a number to that so that we can raise the bar of quality participation. Like our other endeavours in the past, ‘The Titans’ also is born out of passion. We hope you understand our role and we seek your appreciation and good wishes in this journey.

THE CHANGING ROLE OF CIOS INFORMATION-INNOVATION - TRANSFORMATION Archimedes had once stated, “Give me a place to stand… and I will move the world.” With the numerous ways in which technology has metamorphosed the modern enterprise, the enterprise Archimedes—the CIOs— are all set to align their business goals on the success ‘Parabola’. Wikipedia defines a CIO as: - “Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Information Technology (IT) Director, is a job title commonly given to the most senior executive in an enterprise responsible for the information technology and

computer systems that support enterprise goals. Generally, the CIO reports to the chief executive officer, chief operating officer or chief financial officer.” This post in Wikipedia dates back

to 2008. So, the crux of the matter is that…. It is not only the years, but the whole portfolio of a CIO has evolved. The present situation of enterprises is increasingly showcasing the CIO metamorphosing as the catalyst

for business empowerment and growth. Thus, technology has not only transformed the way business is done, it has also revamped some crucial designations in a modern enterprise. Going down the lanes of history, 1990s and 2000s saw the era of PC evolvement and the role of DirectorIT was formally introduced. It was in the fourth phase, between 2000s and 2010s, the position of CIO was familiarized, as IT was considered the backbone for business processes and alignment. Crisis or Opportunity? The CIO Association of Canada makes a

very bold statement— “The CIOs need to go from being an enabler of the business to becoming THE business.” Aligning IT with business goals was the career objective that defined and ruled a CIO or IT Head’s resume

till a long time. It is still a crucial task for any IT head, but there has been a drastic evolution in the role of the CIO that requires him/her to not only align business with “CIOs have the opportunity to transform from keeper of the technology into a true Chief of Information, now managing data as a company asset, just as the CFO manages company Finances”, says Tom Fisher, Senior Vice President and Global Commercial CIO, Oracle IT, “but also to transform and innovate while juggling in his role as a CIO and a business enabler.” Some term the changing role of CIO as a race to overtake the other decisive positions like the CEOs and CFOs, while some look at it as a very cohesive and coherent environment to work towards a common goal. Some have ruled it as an identity crisis for the CIO, who is increasingly compared or expected to play the role of a CEO, CFO or a CMO. So, do the CIOs get carried away by the proliferation and consumerization of technology or do they rediscover themselves to anchor the opportunities that can give a wider dimension to their portfolio as business enablers. Satiating the Demand Curve According to a Gartner study on The CIO’s edge, the seven leadership skills that a CIO should have is; commitment to leadership first, everything second; Lead differently than you think; Embrace your softer side; Forge right relationships, drive right results; Master communications; Inspire others; and Build people not systems. ‘Expectations are ever increasing’. So, as emerging technologies rule the roost, the pressure mounts on the IT head to lead the organization on that roadmap. As Firoj Rauta, Head of IT at Skyline University College remarks, “The expectation from the role of CIOs between 2016 and 2020 includes Big Data Analytics, Mixed Responsibilities (In house team development with

external support) and implementation of Internet 2. In other words, Role of today’s CIO is to identify the gaps in granular security, accurate results, mobility, availability of the system 365x24x7 and IT responsiveness.” The CIO management concept was first introduced in 1981 by William A. Synnott and William H. Gruber in their book, Information Resource Management: Opportunities and Strategies for the 1980s. Synnott and Gruber believe that the ClO concept is one that is coming into its own. The Cloudy Future: Boom or Doom The rapid emergence of Cloud Computing has put a great number of challenges ahead of the CIO in carrying out their business operations and has forced them to rethink and reimagine business on new forefronts. Despite the cloud acting as a true business booster, it has added a lot of twists and turns to the changing role of CIO. According to a Gartner Survey, ‘Flipping to Digital Leadership: The 2015 CIO Agenda’ or most CIOs, public cloud is an option for projects, but only a first consideration for a small minority. Identifying the Change Makers The Titans, thus is an effort to identify and put the spotlight on the trailblazers who have mastered the art of this ‘Change’; who have not only evolved but have pulled along their respective organizations to evolve. The profiles that you will be flipping across in the upcoming pages are the CIOs and IT Heads who have stood the test of time, gripping firmly to their strengths and at the same time letting go of the conservations. Finally: Technology today is passé tomorrow. CIOs who adapt and evolve with the change and challenge would survive. It is time for the CIOs to be the Atlas and shoulder the business world. Superman, Spiderman, Batman have saved the world a number of times…. Its time for the TECHNOMAN to take over now!

The journey has been exciting and the future definitely looks promising for the CIOs and IT heads who dare to stand out and create an impact by the virtue of their knowledge, experience and holistic approach to the business and technology.

The transition from the head of technology to the helm of an organization is no easy task for sure; but given the way technology has progressed from being a part of the business to being a strategic enabler of the same, it wouldn’t be surprising if remarkable CIOs make the big leap. There has been a lot of debate on this topic; here we shall attempt to bring to you both the sides of the story on one stage. We asked several CIOs and IT heads across the MEA region about their opinion on the potential of CIOs to be the future CEOs. While some seemed very optimistic, others don’t see this becoming a reality anytime soon. Dr Jassim Haji, Director of IT,

Gulf Air believes that natural career progression for CIOs is to become CEOs. “CIOs must provide services to all the departments in the organizations, they handle the crucial responsibility of automating all the business processes and optimizing these processes by means of having the right systems integrated with each other. CIOs provide tools and mechanisms to increase productivity of all workers at different levels, and reduce operation costs. Further, CIOs set their technological strategy based the organization strategy, so they are well familiar of formulating, implementing and monitoring their organization’s strategy. All of the above opens the door for CIOs to become CEOs and the

advantage gained by the CIOs is a fresh set of eyes empowered with innovative thinking that can revolutionize the role of CEO.” Trevor Moore, CIO of Qatar university also thinks on similar lines, “CIOs today have to manage tight budgets, lead strategy and have a voice at the most senior level within an organisation. Who better to lead an organization in today’s digital world than a CIO, we have the technology experience and the business knowledge to be able to be CEOs.” However, it seems that not all sectors are ready for it. As Jorge Tamayo, GM of It & Finance, Bridgestone MEA says, “for companies where the strategy is based on product innovation and technology-driven, the

However, on general basis, I believe that in the traditional sectors and consolidated companies, at least for a foreseeable future, the CEO’s will continue coming mainly from Sales & Marketing or Finance background.” Considering different aspects, what comes to the fore is – though the CIO to CEO evolution is not exactly a castle in the air, the journey isn’t going to be easy either. The transition from service manager to business leader will pass through lots of stumbling blocks. In case of a technology firm, the chances are definitely higher since the IT leader’s 360-degree view of business operations can provide the firm foundation for leading a successful

business. However, the situation can be shaky in case of other businesses where success would require a more holistic approach and expertise into marketing, innovation and finances which may or may not be adequately found in an IT leader. Successful firms require forward looking leaders who have great drive, passion and insights. Technology has lots of power but only when tapped to the maximum extent. If CIOs combine master innovation and develop exceptional business intelligence and marketing acumen, they can create the possibility for careers soaring beyond the IT departments. CIOs need to focus not only on the IT operations and innovation therein;

but also on the understanding of business operations at large. They need to deal with customer issues and develop novel ways to resolve the same. They further need to free themselves from IT jargons and instead be efficient translators of technology because that’s what is going to matter when they present great ideas to their stakeholders. It’s essential for CIOs to work upon strengths which they should develop so that they can bring value to the boardroom. The journey from CIO to CEO is definitely a tough uphill drive but with the right drive, ambition, determination, and skills, backed with innovation and the power of technology, one can surely put the best foot forward.
