Business news Donate with Dizzy Blonde After its success last year, Robinsons Brewery will launch its Donate with Dizzy fundraising campaign for a second year in a row. Running for three months due to its popularity in 2016, the campaign will run from June to August this year, and will see 5p from every pint of Dizzy Blonde sold go to the charity of the participating pub’s choice. With over 160 pubs last year raising £6,200 between them for their charities, it’s well worth getting involved. Visit Robinsons Brewery’s specially created website pimpmypumpclip.com to sign up for the activity and select a charity of your choice
• You can then select how many pump clips you’d like and personalise them to reflect your chosen charity. They will then be sent to your pub with supporting posters

Vigilance in pubs After the recent attack at Westminster, BBPA Chief Executive, Brigid Simmonds, has cautioned that publicans should be vigilant to the threat of terrorism, with regularly reviewed safety checks and CCTV weaknesses. Staff should be trained on how to respond to threats such as suspicious packages, search plans and evacuation plans. Brigid has commented; “Pubs should monitor advice from the police, brief staff and certainly consider terrorism as part of their risk assessment of the premises.”
Food for thought Tristan O’Hana
If customers are gradually learning more about products, it’s up to you to increase your knowledge and challenge their perceptions, writes Tristan O’Hana, Editor of Pub & Bar magazine
For more information on risk assessment guidance, see BBPA’s ‘Managing Safety in Pubs & Bars’.
If you’re a publican who regularly reads trade press, you must be sick to the back teeth of being told that your customers want to know more about the products they’re consuming. It’s a tired piece of advice that’s bordering on the clichéd. However, there’s good reason for this monotonous message. If you’re aware of just how much your guests want to learn about the newest food and drink trends, you’re more than likely to ensure staff knowledge and training is up to scratch.

Sponsored independent school places available for families in the pub industry If you feel your local school is not helping your child fulfil their full potential, or if you’re finding your long work hours or home situation is affecting your children’s education, the Licensed Trade Charity may be able to help you. The charity runs an independent day and boarding school in Ascot for 4 to 18 year olds. Educational sponsorships are available for children of parents working in pubs or breweries who are in need of help.

What modern on-trade operators are faced with now is challenging consumer perceptions through the introduction of new products, new promotions and new ideas. Take beer and barbecues as a fine example – on the surface, the combination of these two tried and tested summer favourites are a sure-fire way of attracting a decent crowd to your pub. But could you be doing more with this obvious yet effective offer? Last month, I attended a Pilsner Urquell Brewers and Makers Masterclass at the Draft House in Chancery Lane, and it opened my eyes as to the endless possibilities that meat and beer bring. If you’re already pairing particular beers with certain meats and marinades, you’re a step ahead. However, did you know that the way a beer is poured can also affect the taste and flavour of the product, and will consequently pair more effectively with specific cuts of meat? You do now. When firing up the grill this summer, it’s certainly food for thought.

Who will this beer appeal to? Anyone supporting the British and Irish Lions tour, rugby fans and beer drinkers alike!
Caledonian First Dawn 3.7% ABV Bring out the dark soft fruit flavours in this beer with slow-cooked beef short ribs to complement the sweetness. Marston’s Power of Three 3.9% ABV Hoppy beer can quench the heat of chilli and spice brilliantly. Choose this beer to cut through the flavours in chipotle lamb kebabs.

Wickwar Wessex Cotswold Way 4.2% ABV The nutty flavours in this beer will bring out caramelised flavours in peppers roasted on a barbecue and stuffed with soft cheese.
Annabel Smith There’s no doubt we’ve become a ‘foodie’ nation, you only need to observe how many cookery programmes there are on television. We have a huge appetite for unusual ingredients, inspiring recipes and unconventional ways to cook food. The same could be said of beer: over the past few years we’ve seen a huge explosion in the number of beer styles, flavours and serve styles. The beer category is attracting interest amongst new and existing drinkers, and barbecue season is a time to capitalise on this. Customers are becoming more discerning, and to ensure they visit a pub rather than stay at home, it’s time to offer more than a ‘burger & beer’ option.

Greene King Amarillo 3.8% ABV A low-alcohol summer beer bursting with citrus flavours will perfectly complement some crispy and golden crab & chilli fishcakes.

Build a reputation for ‘gourmet’ barbecue and beer events, to stand out from the competition. Match beef short ribs with Goose Island Honkers Ale, an American twist on a traditional British beer. Complement sticky BBQ ribs with Sam Adams Boston Lager (they both have a lovely sweetness and caramel quality). Try spicy chilli prawn skewers, and cut through the heat with a hop-forward beer like Lagunitas IPA or Adnams Mosaic. Complement the delicate flavour of salmon marinated in lemon juice with an ice-cold wheat beer, such as Blue Moon or Erdinger.

Salopian Oracle 4.0% ABV The citrusy juiciness of this beer is made for fish. Wrap salmon fillets in filo pastry with a good squeeze of lemon and bake. Timothy Taylor’s Knowle Spring Blonde 4.2% ABV On a summer’s day, serve a glass of Knowle Spring Blonde with a chicken burger and Caesar dressing with crunchy Cos lettuce. Greene King Ale Fresco 4.3% ABV Marinated chunks of chicken breast grilled on the barbecue served in wraps with a glass of Ale Fresco – perfect choice! Fuller’s Sticky Wicket 4.7% Contrast the tropical fruit in this beer with grilled (or barbecued) Halloumi cheese, served with a green salad and crusty bread.

Contrast the sweetness of barbecued bananas or pineapple with the smoky roasted flavours in a Guinness West Indies Porter. Pilsner lagers, meanwhile, such as Budvar and Caledonian 3 Hop, cut through and complement grilled Halloumi cheese. offer customers a taste of something new this summer? A cider festival can be a great way to attract new customers into your pub, offering tasting sessions and serving as an introduction to new ciders. “First things first, start to think about offering a diverse and interesting range based on ABV, draught, packaged, cloudy, clear, apple & fruit”, says Conor Mooney, National Account Manager at Westons. “I’d also recommend including some familiar brands for drinkers to navigate to for reassurance before becoming more adventurous in their choice.”
Cider stats 787m litres of cider

“Encourage trade-up too – give drinkers a compelling reason to move beyond mainstream products. A simple pricing ladder based on ABV works perfectly – so for example, increase costs by 5 - 10 pence for higher ABV or more premium ciders. However, it’s vital not to cost customers out of the cider category. In terms of selecting the number of ciders, try using a very simple matrix based on draught & packaged and have at least one brand in each section… any less than 8 and it’s probably not a festival!”

What’s the inspiration behind the Westons range? Westons, with over 137 years of cider making heritage, draws on its surroundings for its inspiration. Old Rosie is christened after our 1927 Aveling & Porter Steam Roller and Rosie’s Pig from one of our early delivery trucks, reputedly a pig to start and a pig of a thing to drive! The new fruit flavours are a nod to the present day and what cider drinkers are actively seeking. What advice would you offer pubs looking to host a Cider Festival? As drinkers are becoming increasingly engaged with the brands they drink they are seeking new
experiences in outlet. Very often the experience is driving the choice of outlet rather than the brand itself and cider festivals are a great way to capture this offering and they're great fun too. Tell us your favourite cider fact! Over 85% of Westons cider apples are sourced from a 40 mile radius of the Cider Mill in Herefordshire! If you could share a cider with anyone, who would it be? As a rugby fan growing up in Northern Ireland, David Humphreys was a sporting hero of mine. Capped 72 times for Ireland, scoring 560 points, Humphreys spent much of his playing career with Ulster before retiring in 2008. He is now Director of Rugby at Gloucester. Purely by co-incidence Westons are proud sponsors of Gloucester Rugby, so maybe someday we’ll have a cider together!

Rod Jones BREWING COMP COMPANY
The Craft Beer Revolution In today’s market, you really can’t afford to ignore craft beer, explains Rod Jones from Meantime Brewing Company. “The phrase ‘craft beer revolution‘ simply means that beer has become cool, exciting and adventurous again over the last few years. Craft beer began in the late ‘70s on America’s West Coast – a pushback against flavourless, industrial commodity beers. Today’s craft brewers love combining tradition with innovation, taking classics such as IPA or Porter and putting their own twist on them. There are no limits upon a craft brewer’s imagination – fruit beers, sours, chocolate, coffee, smoked, spiced and citrus beers all abound. American hops are often used to get refreshing bitterness as well as tropical fruit, blackcurrant, pink grapefruit and citrus flavours into craft beers. Extinct and rare styles such as Gose, Saison, Berliner Weisse and Milk Stout are being revived.
quality. Leading craft breweries combine passion and imagination with the use of top quality, often unusual, ingredients and a flair for vivid flavours and equally vivid packaging to produce cool, sophisticated beers that will stand out in your bar to be appreciated and remembered by your guests.
“Craft is growing and attracting modern consumers who are drinking less alcohol but trading up in terms of quality, and choosing more characterful products. Featuring craft beers mean you are offering a more interesting range, and appealing to a very important demographic. Craft styles often have more appeal for affluent younger drinkers of both genders than traditional beers. Craft beer is full of character and flavour and often matches brilliantly with food, so with well-chosen “Craft breweries are not necessarily tiny, menu suggestions, it can help dry plastic-dustbins-in-a-railway-arch operations, sales. And don’t forget that it sells at and indeed the best are professional a premium price point and margin!” enough to guarantee consistency and

Food focus: Thrill of the grill This issue is sizzling with ideas to attract customers this summer, as the evenings get longer and the days get warmer. So, whether you’ve got the outdoor space for a ‘barbie‘, or you simply want to throw a burger on your kitchen grill, there’s a menu solution for you. Entice customers out of their garden and into yours – where they can grab a plate, sit back and relax without the hassle of lighting the charcoal or scrubbing down the grill themselves!
Barbecues are a great way of creating a buzz around your food offer, but there are some safety implications to consider: Make sure that your food is prepared safely Avoid cross contamination and ensure your food is fully cooked through. Beware of the burn, as overcooked and charred foods carry a carcinogenic risk. Turn to page 28 for our guide to BBQ and summer safety.
The perfect weekend offering, barbecues are a great way to bring the community together. From cider festivals to charity fundraisers, nothing quite beats getting together over a cold drink and a loaded plate of barbecue food. Include classics like burgers, bangers and barbecue wings – and don’t forget a vegetarian option like grilled halloumi or grilled veggie kebabs.

Father’s Day Sunday 18th June Father’s Day is big business for pubs, and is often one of the busier days on-trade across the year. There’s plenty of ways to drive footfall from Dads – from offering pops a free pint to lighting up the BBQ. Here are our top 10 tips for hosting a profitable Father’s Day celebration. 1. Free beer! Offer Dads a free pint if they dine with their families in your pub. 2. Thinking of hosting a Beer or Cider Festival? Now’s your chance, as this will go down a storm with families looking for a day out. 3. Make hay whilst the sunshines and light up the BBQ for a mighty meaty food offering. 4. And if it doesn't? Sunday roasts are popular whatever the weather.

Safety settings
Putting your customer’s safety first is paramount, as the last thing any publican wants 193.0 is an accident or their pub getting itself a bad x 280.0mm reputation. At this time of year, it’s really important to carry out checks of your outside area to make sure it’s a safe zone for customers of all ages. 2.34mm Barbecues Ask ten people their favourite thing about summer – nine people will say barbecues and the other will be a vegetarian! Barbecues are guaranteed footfall drivers and attract customers who may not have otherwise visited your pub. They do also, however, carry some safety risks. When hosting a barbecue, ensure the grill itself is attended by staff at all times, that your barbecue area is well sectioned off so there are no children playing near your cooking area, and that smoke and open flames are not affecting your customers. Cooking equipment and food safety Just as it would be inside your pub, outside cooking equipment needs to be up-to-scratch and you’ll need to make sure that your food is being prepared safely, avoiding any cross contamination. Don’t let standards slip outside of the kitchen!

Hazard central No, we’re not talking about Chelsea’s star winger! There’s a good chance you’ll have excitable kids or slightly worse-for-wear customers navigating their way around your garden. Do them, and yourself, a favour by carrying out routine checks to make sure there’s nothing for them to trip over, fall off or walk into. Weather proofing Make sure your outside space can cater for customers whatever the weather. You’ll need parasols and shaded areas for hotter days, and decent lighting outside for the evenings, as your garden becomes an extension of your pub interior. Day in the life of... John Govier publican at the award winning Brook Inn, Plympton
Tell us a little about a typical day at The Brook Inn? My situation is possibly a little different. My partner doesn’t take part in the day to day running of the pub, so it’s just me. I cover the chef’s two days off and work in the kitchen at weekends when the pub is busiest. There’s plenty of paperwork to fit into each day too, from banking to rotas, accounts to menu planning. I put a lot of importance on social media and keeping our pages up to date.
You’ve won awards for your music offering and have a reputation for championing new acts – how does your live music offering benefit the business? I used to work for local BBC radio and had a programme that gave air time to local acts. It’s been no hardship transferring my contacts from the airwaves to the stage. We are currently fully booked until 2018!
2.15mm
What time does your day tend to start? My day really starts about 7.15am when I’m in the bath, updating our social media pages on my mobile phone! Sorry for the mental image that might conjure up, but it’s the most convenient time to check any messages we’ve had on our Facebook page and to share upcoming events on other pages.
What advice would you give other publicans looking to introduce live entertainment in their venue? I believe booking acts should be a business partnership. If you pay the going rates (which I believe you should) then it’s not cheap. Don’t shove the singer in a corner. Give them prominence, a stage and spotlight, make sure the PA is good. Importantly, make sure their style of music suits your premises and the atmosphere you are trying to achieve.
193.0 x 280.0mm
When does the bar start to fill up? Lots of groups meet here. An art class from 9.30am on Wednesdays, the local WI monthly meeting, U3A, French conversation classes – you name it! Most days, we have a fairly healthy amount of senior citizens who come to the pub for our ‘dinky dinners’ – smaller meals for smaller appetites until the evening rush kicks in.
Finally, dead or alive, who would you most like to share a drink with, and what would be your tipple of choice? This was a difficult one to answer, there are so many: I’d happily buy Jeff Lynne and the boys from ELO a pint or two of Dartmoor Jail Ale if they fancied playing a gig in return... But probably most of all I’d like to share a coffee with my mum, who’s been gone 11 years now and never got to see what we’ve managed to achieve here. If you would like to feature in a future edition please email ideas@eigroupplc.com

The only way is up… Since the initiative to drive machine income began almost 12 months ago, we have seen a substantial increase in gaming machine income across the board. On average, each machine in the estate is making £3 more per week than the same time last year. This increase equates to around an extra £240,000 per year in publican income.
2.15mm
193.0 x 280.0mm
Here the Gaming and Media team at Ei Group share their top tips on incresing machine profit in your pub... 1. Give machine players space to relax – space machines apart (preferably with a machine table in between) 2. Keep machines near the bar in clear sight so you can keep an eye on them 3. Machines should be in high footfall areas but must not block walk ways 4. Put your best machines in the best positions! Prime positions should not be used for quiz machines or other low sales machines 5. Refill machines every day, before busy periods and when coin levels are running below £200 6. Make sure you have the best machines possible! Talk to your suppliers to find out which machines make the most profit 7. Remember to clean all machines daily and check for any sticking buttons or broken bulbs 8. Try an additional machine. Installing a 2nd or 3rd machine is almost guaranteed to increase overall profits

Considering Facebook Advertising? Imagine being able to do a leaflet drop about your new cask ale offer but only have it delivered to people that like cask ale. You’d save money and time. The people who see it are more likely to take up the offer too. This is where Facebook advertising comes in. It’s an easy to implement, cost-effective way of targeting a specific audience. Here, Ed Davies from InaPub explains the benefits of boosted posts and facebook advertiing.
Boosting Vs Advertising Many of you will have seen the little blue Boost button underneath your posts, which allows you to pay for that existing post to be seen by more people. But you may not be aware that you can run actual adverts on the site.
Why Advertise?
Advertising allows you to display adverts that are 193.0 x 280.0mm hyper-relevant to your customers. For example,
What’s the Difference? Boosting is where you take an existing post, already posted to your page and pay for it to go to more people. Only people who fit criteria you set will see it, usually in their newsfeed like a normal post.
Why Boost? Boosting is great if you’ve got an event coming up that you want everyone to know about. It can be on your page, everyone can see it and you’ll give it a little boost to make sure more people know about it. Visit the Digital stand in the eizone for advice on social media for your pub and pick up a copy of our new Pub Principles guide to social media marketing.
a pub I worked with last week offered 10% off food for students and NHS staff. Instead of posting about it, we made two adverts:
1.97mm
• Targeting students of the main universities in the city, with text describing how the pub wanted to help students get a little more for their money. • The other targeting staff that worked at the nearby hospital and lived within 10 miles of the city, this time the text saying ‘We want to say thanks to NHS staff – here’s 10% off’. Relevance By advertising, neither of those adverts will appear on the pub's page. Only students will see the student one and only NHS staff will see that one. This means the content of the advert is relevant to the person seeing it. This relevance has all sorts of benefits, but the main one is we as customers take a lot more notice of things explicitly relevant to us!

PR your pub The power of PR shouldn't be underestimated. It’s a great way to spread the word about your pub and shout about what you do best, whether it's award-winning food and drink, crowd-pleasing events or raising tonnes of cash for charity. Ei Group has recently launched a ‘How to PR your Pub’ guide, available to download exclusively from the Publican Channel. The guide gives advice on a range of PR topics, including approaching the media, photography, newsworthy stories, press release templates and social media.
193.0 x 280.0mm
Jon Dale, Head of Corporate Communication, Ei Group plc, said: “This guide has been created to help publicans promote their business to new and existing customers, while getting recognition for the excellent work they do, day in day out, in their local communities. This easy-to-use guide gives you the tools, advice and focus you need to market your business across traditional and digital media channels.”
1.97mm
But just what makes good news? • Investment/refurbishment work, especially if the pub has been closed while the work took place • Key events including charity fundraisers, summer barbecues, beer festivals • Any big changes to your offering – a new menu, a new chef, new accommodation • Diversification – are you offering more than typical pub services? • Awards won – both by the pub and your staff • Milestones – perhaps you’ve held the reins for decades or your pub is 100 years old

Is your pub dual purpose? Let us know what your business doubles up as, and you might see yourself on the pages of deals&ideas very soon!
193.0 x 280.0mm The New Inn, in the Yorkshire Dales, and County Durham’s Spotted Dog, are combining beer and hymns, pints and prayers, having both opened their doors to local church congregations. In 2015, the village church of St James, in Clapham, closed for renovation work, prompting New Inn publicans Ron and Lesley Benson to invite the local vicar to use the pub for a Sunday service. Rev Ian Greenhalgh took up the offer, and the meetings have since become a regular Sunday evening event. Now held every two months, they attract around 50 churchgoers, despite renovation work at the church being complete! “It all started when the vicar told me he hadn’t got a venue for a fellowship meeting. I offered him use of the pub,” Ron explains.
“The numbers have doubled since the first meeting, helped by an appearance early on by the Bishop of Leeds. The meetings are held in the bar, and any customers there at the time join in because it’s so infectious.” “People have visited from across Yorkshire to see if they can replicate the idea in their own dioceses and parishes.“ The New Inn isn’t the only dualpurpose pub in the North. At The Spotted Dog, near Darlington, beer and hymn evenings have attracted another bishop – the Bishop of Durham, who dropped in as part of a ‘prayer walk’ in the area last year.
He heard about the pub hosting Easter and Christmas gatherings, with customers singing hymns over beers and food laid on by publican Steve Grabham “Members of the congregation at St Edwin’s join villagers with hymn sheets and sing along. It’s an excellent way of attracting people to the pub who wouldn’t normally come in,” Steve tells us.
“This is a wonderful example of our publicans putting their pub at the heart of the community they’re in" Mark Price, Regional Manager

Publicans & pubs in the spotlight World Record Attempt Bell Inn, Kingsteignton Publican Graham Cuthbert from South Devon is hoping to have claimed a new world record for the longest ever pool marathon. Teaming up with local customer Darren Stocks, the duo clocked up an impressive 106 hours of continuous play – that’s four days and 10 hours! The four-day challenge was filmed from start to finish with both players granted a five-minute break for every hour of play. Support from the local community raised more than £7,000 for the Rowcroft Hospice, a charity that provides comfort, support and specialist care for over 2,200 patients and their loved ones across South Devon. We wish you the best of luck with your world record!

Another CAMRA win for this Doncaster pub The Corner Pin, Doncaster Congratulations on another Doncaster CAMRA’s Pub of the Year win for the team at The Corner Pin. David and Ruth Wicks have won a number of accolades for their pub, including CAMRA’s Pub of the Year in 2011, 2014 and 2015, and were also named as one of CAMRA’s top 200 pubs nationwide. Based just outside the main town centre, The Corner Pin hosts a range of entertainment such as darts and quiz nights, but it’s the food and drink which really gets the gold here. A traditional pub with plenty of character, The Corner Pin offers real ales and freshly prepared food – apparently Ruth’s chip butties are always top of the menu for customers!

Raising awareness of mental health The Chequers, Laddingford The Chequers is a traditional country village pub near Maidstone, offering real ale, great food, a relaxed atmosphere and a building full of character. Recently, publican Tracey Barnes swam 25 kilometres overall for Mind UK as part of the mental health charity’s February Five challenge to complete a challenge five times in one month. Swimming in five different locations, Tracey needed a goal that could be worked around the irregular hours of running a pub, and hopes to raise awareness about mental health issues. Congratulations to Tracey on behalf of the entire team at Ei Group.

Fleur De Lys, Pilley A special charity evening was held at the Beaulieu Abbey on the 21st March with local, talented chefs preparing dishes in front of a 200 strong audience. Dishes later later went to auction to raise money for charity. Steve Hurst, a trained Michelin chef at the Fleur De Lys, prepared dessert for the evening, which was auctioned off for £80. Tasty, and all in the name of charity!
Charity event to support orphaned children The Seven Stars, Thornton Hough You may have seen the moving photo circulating on social media of two parents holding hands as they died of cancer within days of each other. The Seven Stars held a charity quiz night with hot pot supper on the 20th February to raise money for the three Bennett children left behind. Carl and Paula Starkey’s event managed to sell the maximum amount of tickets they could fit in their pub, and raised a fantastic £1,400 for the children’s fund.

Immensely drinkable, Honkers Ale is not only a beer drinkers can trust but one they'll look forward to.
Goose 312 Inspired by the city of Chicago and densely populated with flavour, 312's spicy aroma of Cascade hops is followed by a crisp, fruity ale flavour delivered in a smooth, creamy body that’s immensely refreshing.
Goose IPA
Franziskaner NA
We've taken the traditional English style and created our own fuller flavoured IPA with bright citrus aromas and a bold hop finish. With Hoppy, bold and smooth flavour, Goose IPA is the perfect beer for hopheads and discovery drinkers alike.
This Non- Alcoholic version stays true to the original. This beer is still full of classic German wheat beer flavours, including citrus, hints of banana and spice. It has a refreshingly, lively level of carbonation and is an ideal accompaniment to salads and grilled chicken.

The Czechs believe that a fine beer can be judged from the very first sip. We do too. That’s why Pravha, the new draught 4% premium lager from Staropramen has all the iconic flavour and gentle bitterness of a high quality Czech pilsner, but is unexpectedly crisp, light and refreshing. So raise your glass in celebration and say Na zdravi! For more information please contact your Molson Coors (UK) representative.
