A pub garden can offer the opportunity to significantly increase your retail space. Just like the interior of your pub, creating a welcoming environment in your pub garden is extremely important for customers.

NEIGHBOURHOOD

Urban pubs are often located on secondary town circuits or the outskirts of town centres close to businesses and shops, they attract business from local shoppers and office workers. ic staff training and supervision. There are, obviously, inherent dangers in the proximity of a barbecue to young children

Neighbourhood pubs are generally suburban locations situated close to roads or in residential areas which act as the local venue for residents within a 10 to 15 minute drive time.tunity for exclusivity and

privacy

Hints & Tips for Pub Garden Design Consider who you want to encourage to use the garden and when. Should you plan to introduce food / coffee / provide an external TV? If you want to attract families consider including a children’s play area to encourage them to visit. Make sure it’s in full view of many of the tables but is placed so that people who want to keep away from the noise can choose to sit in a quieter space. Ensure you know where the sun will set so you can design your garden layout to make the most of the it. Be mindful of the noise being created for neighbours. If you are creating a new facility, engage with local residents to alleviate their concerns.

Ensure licensing plans include the external area for the activities required e.g consumption, sale if there is a bar, music etc., check for any conditions that may restrict your licensable activities in the area. When using any external area or holding events, it is always good practice to carry out appropriate risk assessments. You should consider whether you have relevant measures and safeguards in place to control noise and nuisance, which may be caused to your local residents. It is advisable that CCTV is extended to cover the garden area.

Try to avoid customers walking across the car-park to access the beer garden. Offer a variety of seating. Some people will be happy with small patio tables, however larger groups will need more space. Remember people like to sit in the open air as well as under a roof covering. If you have a large outdoor space avoid placing seating areas away from the pub as this will impact on service speed. If the building is in a Conservation Area or is a Listed Building then it may affect the design and appearance of the garden and specialist advice sought.

If you wish to place tables and chairs on the public highway, you may need to obtain permission from the council. You may also require planning permission from your local planning department. Any permission is likely to come with its own set of restrictions with regard to hours of operation, numbers permitted and the prevention of any obstruction to pedestrians. Some local authorities require the area be contained within the licensed area so a variation to the premises licence may be required to cover the additional space. Does the furniture require removing when the pub closes? Is folding / stackable furniture required? If you include features such as sheds, huts or outdoor booths in your garden consider making them bookable for customers who will appreciate the opportunity for exclusivity and privacy.

Design Tip Traditional timber decking requires regular maintenance to retain its appearance and to reduce the potential for people to slip. A more expensive Timco composite board decking system is recommended which has better ‘anti-slip’ properties and requires less maintenance.
