Ask customers to don their
favourite Christmas jumpers and donate £2 to Save the Children for a festive charity night hosted in your pub.
You may find that your license limits trading hours you would otherwise look to operate in during Christmas and New Year. If this is the case, consider applying for a Temporary Event Notice, which costs just £21 and can be done through your local authority. This will allow you to extend your opening hours during a designated period of time. The licensing activity includes: • Selling alcohol • Serving alcohol to members of a private club • Providing entertainment (such as music, dancing or indoor sporting events) • Serving hot food or drink between 11pm and 5am With potentially the busiest social event of the year fast approaching, don’t be caught out by insufficient licensing. You need to apply for the Temporary Event Notice at least ten days before the event

Black Sheep’s Blitzen (Father Christmas Approved)
What is the inspiration behind Blitzen? In typical Black Sheep style, when it came to naming our first Christmas beer, we decided to honour our favourite of Father Christmas’s reindeer. Not as well known as Rudolph, but just as loved by Father Christmas!
TO ORDER "ON THE DRAY" SEE BACK PAGE
The pump clip even features an illuminated red nose, and a real felt hat and jingle bell! Forget Rudolph, this year it’s all about Blitzen!
What are the main ingredients? A 4% ruby Christmas beer, Blitzen is brewed with Cascade and Goldings hops, plus light and dark Muscovado sugar and a hint of mixed citrus peel, for a distinctive Christmassy richness. Its complex, malty taste comes from a blend of pale, crystal and pale chocolate malts.
What does it taste like? Christmas in a glass! A chocolatey aroma with notes of orange gives way to a rich, complex, malty character with a hint of citrus from the mixed peel. The perfect match for an indulgent Christmas dinner.
Who will this beer appeal to? Everyone! A real winter warmer with a stunning flavour, Blitzen is the perfect companion (aside from your friends and family) with which to celebrate the holiday season!

DEC JUL
CHRISTMAS BEER MATCHING Annabel Smith I love everything about the festive period, from decorating the tree to wrapping presents. But most of all, I love Christmas food, especially when it’s served with a good beer. There is definitely something magical (and uniquely British) about sitting in the pub with a glass of beer and a festive menu filled with all the sorts of food I adore. So looking at the range of beers on offer this month I started planning my dream menu. It’s all about the canapes for me, and a good wheat beer like Blue Moon is perfect to pair with smoked salmon nibbles. Erdinger even have an
alcohol free version of their wheat beer for non-drinkers or designated drivers. Onto the mains, a strong ale like Trooper is just the ticket with roast turkey and all the trimmings. Wadworth 6X is a gorgeous malty, fruity beer which brings out the best in Christmas pudding and mince pies. For a showstopping finish, have a snifter of Adnams’ Broadside to complement the stilton on the cheeseboard. There’s even a beer for the traditional Boxing Day turkey curry: Cobra quenches the fiery heat of any chillies and rings the changes from ale.
BLACK SHEEP BLITZEN 4.0% ABV
This month's 'On the dray' featured beers on page 34 offer distinct characteristics and are perfect for pairing with food:
So as customers are ordering from your Christmas menus, have a think about suggesting some beers which pair well with your fayre. Christmas is all about delighting your guests and making the occasion extra special. Some of the above beer matches will definitely surprise them! You can email Annabel your questions direct at beersommelier@enterpriseinns.com or simply tweet the name of a food to @BeerForThat with the hashtag #BeerMatch for an instant reply.
HOOK NORTON GREEDY GOOSE 4.2% ABV
Try this lovely rich malty beer with a plate of warm mince pies, or a slab of luscious Christmas cake.
The soft fruit and rich nut flavours make this ale perfect for the main dish – turkey with all the trimmings.
WYCHWOOD BAH HUMBUG 4.3% ABV
MOORHOUSES ICE WITCH 4.3% ABV
The cloves and spices in this beer make it ideal for pairing with a traditional Boxing Day turkey curry.
SA BRAIN FIR KING GOOD 4.0% ABV
The fruitiness of this beer cuts through a slice of baked gammon served with pineapple on the side.
CARLSBERG UK CHRISTMAS CRACKER 4.3% ABV
Serve this beer with a ‘nut roast’ – it will really bring out the spicy hop and warming nature of the beer.
With sweet hints of vanilla, this ale demands a strong meat like venison or roast leg of lamb.
GREENE KING ROCKING RUDOLPH 4.2% ABV
CHARLES WELLS A GOOD STUFFING 4.5% ABV
CASTLE ROCK SNOWHITE 4.2% ABV
The fruitiness of this beer is brilliant with a baked Camembert, with a rich redcurrant sauce.
This beer is robust enough to stand up to Stilton cheese, served with a good chutney.
Crisp and clean, try this beer with a plate of oak smoked salmon or trout with a squeeze of lemon.

Invest in the community and they’ll invest in you What advice do you have for other publicans? The best kind of advertising is word of mouth; a warm lead is always better than a cold one and the work we have done certainly got chins wagging. We’ve found that if you invest in the community, they’ll invest in you. We would suggest other publicans think about what they can do to bring the community together. Enterprise's Community Heroes Award encourages work that can make a difference to people’s lives,
and, from a business perspective, it has made a huge difference to our pub’s performance and reputation. For us, this focal community element was a bit of a natural progression that led on from a need to attract customers back to what had previously been an underperforming pub. Once we had engaged local visitors again, we wanted to give something back, which snowballed into more and more footfall as visitors brought along family and friends. The more we did to encourage and inspire community bonds seemed
to add to the pubs’ popularity. Find a reason to bolster community values within your pub and you will create an atmosphere people want to be part of – that’s the best advice we can give. Finally, do you have any plans for your prize fund? We’re looking to invest the prize fund in a vehicle for community transport. Being able to offer people who struggle to get out in winter free transport to the pub would be a great way to stop them feeling isolated.

S P O T L I G H T Congratulations to all the recent award-winning publicans who have had their hard work rewarded Local pub opens up a shop to support village residents Royal Oak, Scopwick A village shop that will help support the community through sales of local produce has opened in Scopwick, utilising an underused side room in the Royal Oak Pub. It is a fitting venue for a shop that will sell local meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy produce and bread; the Royal Oak recently won the Enterprise Inns Regional Final of the Community Heroes Awards. As you know, we’re extremely enthusiastic about the community support local pubs can provide. This joint venture between pub licensee Claire Chesters and her son Jason, with the support of Pub is The Hub and one of its advisors Hugh Wilson, is a shining example of how these conceptions can really bring a community together. With the shop bringing together residents of all ages, Claire and Jason opted for two of the younger residents to open the shop. Evie Tomlinson and Evie Fenwick, ages 4 and 12 respectively, were on hand to do the honours.
Richie Sanderson wins ‘Entrepreneur of the Year 2016’ The Bladebone Inn, Reading Owners of the Bladebone Inn pub, in Reading, have enjoyed a successful period of recognition for their hard work and quality service recently. Winner of Santander’s Berkshire Business Awards’ ‘Entrepreneur of the Year 2016’ award, Chef Patron Richie Sanderson has transformed the pub with the help of his wife Charlotte. The pub was also a finalist for The Food Awards England’s ‘Gastro Pub of the Year’, a huge achievement for a pub that's only been trading ten months.
