What's in a name? You will have noticed that Enterprise leased & tenanted changed name recently to Ei Publican Partnerships, to reflect more accurately what our business is all about. As the largest leased and tenanted pub company in the UK, we strive to work in partnership with our publicans to create great British pubs for the benefit of local communities and their customers. Our Ei Publican Partnerships business is a significant part of Enterprise Inns plc. and we are now changing our plc business name as well as our other businesses within the Group. We are doing this to ensure our entire business is structured to continue delivering our fiveyear strategy, and serve all our publicans and other stakeholders the best we can. So, from now on you will probably not see the name Enterprise or Enterprise Inns plc. The company is now called Ei Group plc. We are also taking the opportunity to allow our iconic eagle emblem to retire. The Group has four Business Units that are responsible for the four key areas of our business.

Business news Help BBPA’s campaign to cut beer tax In the upcoming budget on the 8th March, the possibility of increasing the beer tax will be discussed. The BBPA, CAMRA and SIBA are all urging MPs to instead support their call for a cut in beer duty to help support the vital role pubs play in the UK economy.
#CutBeerTax would ensure your pint is an affordable pleasure – and let’s face it, nothing tastes better than a beer that doesn’t break the bank.
Your social channels are a great way to support the #cutbeertax campaign. Download the social media engagement pack to get involved!

From the 28th March, the new 12 sided £1 coin will come into co-circulation to counteract its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters. To prepare for its arrival, you should: • contact your equipment supplier to find out whether or not you need adaptations or replacements for the new coin • make the changes to your equipment if needed and train your staff on the new features • plan for any changes to your cash handling processes during the cocirculation period so things like storing and banking continues working for you.
During the co-circulation stage, you can accept both the current £1 coin and the new one, though you will need to let your customers know which your equipment can handle. In this period, make arrangements with your bank or CIT provider to return the current £1 coins and new £1 coins in separate packaging, and check what the deadlines are for accepting the old coins once they’ve been demonetised. Hog Island East Coast Pale Ale What is the inspiration behind Hog Island East Coast Pale Ale? Hog Island East Coast Pale Ale (4.8% ABV) was conceived in our experimental brewery, No. 18 Yard Brewhouse. We’ve broken with our tradition of using Kentish hops by using US varieties. The name comes from a part of our brewery site that used to be a small island in Faversham Creek but has become landlocked over time.
TO ORDER SEE PAGE 43
What are the main ingredients? Hog Island East Coast Pale Ale combines some of the most popular hops from America – Boadicea, Amarillo and Cascade – with pale ale and crystal malts. What does it taste like? It’s a refreshing, zesty beer with the typical malty character of an East Coast pale ale, deep gold in colour with citrus, pine and fruit aromas, light caramel notes and a robust bitterness. Who will this beer appeal to? People who like to try something new. This is one for beer lovers who are keen to explore changing tastes and styles, but also for anyone who likes a well-crafted refreshing pint.

MAR
This month's 'On the dray' featured beers on page 43 offer distinct characteristics and are perfect for pairing with food: Theakstons Vanilla Stout 4.5% ABV Fantastic with a slice of New York Cheesecake, but works equally well with sweet and juicy scallops, pan fried in butter. Shepherd Neame Hog Island East Coast Pale Ale 4.8% ABV Try a glass of this with your Sunday roast pork loin. The fruitiness contrasts sharply with the salty meat, especially with crackling. Wickwar Wessex Shanakee Stout 5.0% ABV Sweeter than a traditional dry stout, perfect with Tandoori chicken or lamb, or slow cooked pot roast brisket. Rooster’s 41° South 4.1% ABV This beer has some lip-smacking tart, fruity hops in it, so use these flavours to slice through a nice fillet of sea bass, cooked with ginger, chilli and spring onions. Robinson’s Magnum IPA 4.1% ABV Serve with a chicken and avocado sandwich on a soft white sub roll. The citrusy flavours complement the chicken, avocado will balance out the bitterness. Butcombe UNION 4.8% ABV This Pacific ale keeps its bitterness low, and turns the fruitiness up to full volume, so contrast this with salty meats like ham hocks or gammon steaks.

March is a funny old month. Christmas is a distant memory, it’s the tail end of winter (last year we had heavy snow in March) and everyone is still wrapped up like the Michelin man. But there are reasons to be cheerful in the beer and food calendar. 17th March is a great excuse to visit the pub and celebrate all things Irish with St Patrick’s Day. There are some cracking stouts in this month’s On The Dray and, matched with the suggested food pairings (opposite), they get the weekend off to a great start. Try cooking Irish Stew with half stock, half stout for a really rich and luscious gravy and serve it with a dollop of creamy colcannon. Seasonal golden and blonde ales become more prolific, which gives a hint of spring and summer just round the corner. Spring lamb comes into season and, when roasted with rosemary and garlic, its aroma almost always causes hunger pangs. It’s a brilliant dish to serve on Mothering Sunday, with buttered Jersey Royals and a sweet glass of Butcombe Gold or Wadworth Horizon Golden Ale. Similarly, a roast leg of pork with crunchy crackling can be a real showpiece on the day, and the saltiness is really contrasted by a spicy Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker, or a malty glass of Moorhouse’s Pride of Pendle. Try complementing the zesty Purity Mad Goose with lemon meringue pie, or tarte au citron for Mothering Sunday desserts. Remember we put the clocks forward on Mothering Sunday weekend, meaning an extra hour to enjoy another beer!

Trend watch: Spring serves Spring is approaching, meaning it’s time to review your drink offering as customer taste preferences start to change along with the weather. By updating your bar with craft beers and ciders you can tap into the trend for lighter tipples as we head out of the colder winter months.
Why craft beer?
Join the cider revolution
Craft beer has grown into more than 6,000 outlets over the last year, and with more than a third of craft beer drinkers aged between 18 and 34, it’s really important to ensure your range appeals to younger drinkers, who are leading the craft revolution and are willing to spend more on a night out.
Cider sales are growing across the pub sector, and with the cost of a pint of cider in the pub up to three times more than purchasing cider in a retail environment, it’s popularity is key to driving your drink sales.
Embrace the craft beer hype by stocking a core range of popular varieties, and by regularly introducing guest craft beers to keep customers interested in your offer.
27% of cider drinkers are confident they know what they like to drink, according to a Westons survey released last year. As well as offering traditional apple-based ciders, help customers to experiment and expand their cider repertoire with fruity adaptations, like strawberry and lime, mixed berry and even passion fruit flavours.

Food focus: Roast dinners By planning your menu now, you can position your pub as the place for families to get together over a Sunday roast this March. Depending on what type of pub you run, there are different options for serving your roast. Fixed price menus offering a starter, main and dessert for a set cost are a great way to demonstrate value for money, while a carvery style serve works really well if you have the space to showcase what’s on offer! Offering smaller plates for kids at a reduced cost is another great way to attract family spend.

77% of caterers
say Easter is important for attracting new customers3
Brits are increasingly keen to stay in the UK on their holidays. With 45% of people saying they are likely to take more holidays here1, the Easter Bank Holiday represents a great opportunity to attract new visitors to your pub. Take time to advertise deals and special offers to catch the attention of passers-by, many of whom will not have already decided on where to spend a leisurely lunch.
Our top five tips will make your pub more family-friendly! 1. Family offers are a great way to attract new and existing customers to your pub. Deals such as kids eat free with a full paying adult, free soft drink or free ice cream with the purchase of a kids meal ensures the children are happy, and parents are saving money. 2. Make the most of your outdoor area and beer garden on sunnier days. Easter egg hunts, face painting and egg and spoon races will keep children entertained for hours. Weather permitting, hog roasts and barbeques during the school holidays will be crowd pleasers that appeal to the wider community and draw in even more custom. Plan an event for every day of the week to give families a reason to return. 3. All weather play; provide an alternative if faced with a lack of outdoor space or our great British weather! Kids’ activity packs and place mats are available through the emarket and are an easy and cost effective way to keep children busy during meal times so mum can relax. Alternatively, zoning off an area of the pub specifically for families ensures the comfort and happiness of all customers on their visit, and can be filled with soft games, books and more. 4. Prepare your team to cope with the holiday rush. Pubs will be busier during half term and Easter holidays and parents are likely to have questions about your kids' offer, from food available to what’s on through the week.

Entice customers with a packed month of live sport As we enter the business end of the season, there is far more to get excited about than just football. While Champions League matches will be a big lure for many football fans, Formula 1, specifically the Australian Grand Prix, will draw a massive fan base, and the Cheltenham Festival is a perfect lead in to April’s Grand National. In a big month for sport, there are a few considerations which will help you get the most from it. Reduce wait time Prepare bar and kitchen staff for the inevitable surge of orders that come just before kick off and when the half time whistle goes. Deals on buckets of beer and pitchers can be a great way to keep queuing and wait time to a minimum. Combine events It’s common for St Patrick’s Day and the Cheltenham Festival to overlap, meaning the latter
20 | sport deals & ideas
event can often draw in fellow revellers. Extending Irish celebrations beyond St Patrick’s Day is sure to prove a hit! Brief staff Keep staff updated across all the sport you will be covering. A lot of people know which football teams have a match that night, but ensuring your bar staff can let customers know what else to expect in the coming weeks is invaluable, as they can spread the word to customers. Get digital Social media channels like Twitter and Facebook are popular digital hangouts for sport fans. Using your own social media channels to promote screenings of live events is a great way to target potential customers.
Snack attack Handheld snacks are ideal for busy pubs during live sports, especially for punters looking to enjoy a drink at the same time. Microwaveable food means reduced preparation time that can be the difference between punters leaving at half time for the local takeaway or eating in your pub.

King of Games The King of Games is the best performing digital machine on the Ei estate. There are multiple cases where a King of Games install has boosted the weekly cash within a few short weeks. As these are digital machines, impact on any existing analogue fruit machines is minimal. 80% annual increase An Ei Publican Partnerships site’s weekly machine takings increased by over 80% since November 2016 after installing a King of Games Gold alongside the existing analogue machine which was making, on average, around £100 per week before the install. After the King of Games arrived, the existing machine stayed consistently around £100 per week with the King of Games making an additional £83 per week! Average yearly profit on machines increased from £5,200 to £9,516. Increase weekly profit One of the strongest performing sites on the Ei Publican Partnerships' estate has two King of Games sited. Both machines consistently make a staggering amount of money with an average of £12,000 being played through the machines each week! This amount of usage is converted into an average weekly profit of £460 for the publican. The King of Games alone is worth almost £23,000 per year to this site; a significant bonus.

Top tips for improving your Google presence Google has replaced the Yellow Pages for finding information. Customers visiting a new area, or following up on a recommendation, go straight to it. So here are some tips to improve your chances of being found on Google. Google My Business We’ve touched on this before, but it’s the obvious place to start. If you haven’t already, register for Google My Business. It only takes a couple of minutes to claim your free listing. The three areas to focus on are: • Information – ensure your phone number, address, website and opening hours are all correct. Google even allows you to add special hours for when you open later than usual • P hotos – the more photos you can add the better. Use the different sections to differentiate between interior, exterior, menu and team shots. Also, get in the habit of regularly updating your photos • R eviews – encourage more reviews and respond to them for a boost in your Google rankings. All the above are good practice anyway but were also related to improved Google local searches (eg ‘pubs in Manchester’) in recent survey results.
Third Party Sites When you Google your pub, third party websites such as Tripadvisor and WhatPub will show up in the search results, along with your website. Take time to update your listing on each of these sites for a boost in your local search ranking. Ensure your business name is the same on each listing as well. Update Your Website Google likes up to date, relevant information to show people searching for you. Make sure you’re regularly updating your site – promotions, events and TV sports are easy ways to tell Google your site is current. Updating your Inapub website only takes a couple of minutes. Best of all, events and TV Sports automatically get removed after they’ve finished, so you don’t need to worry about those pages getting out of date.

Workplace equipment: the perils of bargains Are you putting yourself, your staff and business at risk? Buying cheap equipment second hand or over the internet may not always be the wisest investment. The following case study of a publican’s recent experience will help explain why: An Ei publican needed a deep fat fryer to help move away from an exclusively wet led offering. They wanted to ensure a good return on investment, were keen to cut costs when purchasing the equipment and ordered direct from South-East Asia, delivered to their door. The publican used the equipment for some time without any incidents. However, continued use caused a fire, resulting in considerable damage which destroyed their business. Fortunately no-one was hurt. The publican lodged an insurance claim and forensic fire examiners were appointed but the claim was not paid out. So, what went wrong?
claim was not paid because the publican had not bought safe equipment. In addition to the financial loss, there is potential for the local council to prosecute business owners in these scenarios. British and European benchmarks If you are going to buy any equipment for the workplace, ensure it complies with safety standards. This is especially important if the equipment is being purchased from outside the UK and Europe, or the equipment is second-hand. You should look for the following on the label:
Meeting standards All equipment sold in the UK must meet stringent safety standards, proven by compliance with British Standard (BS) or CE marking requirements. Whilst ‘CE’ relates to the EU Conformité Européene, European member states will likely continue with this approach post Brexit.
There will normally be a certificate for new products with more information about either of the above. Take care with CE marking, as manufacturers have been known to add a very similar mark to products and state that it means ‘Chinese Export’.
Buying equipment from outside the UK or Europe often won’t meet BS or CE safety requirements. The deep fat fryer in this particular case had only one thermostat and did not have an upper temperature cut-off to stop the oil overheating. The oil got too hot, set alight and caused a fire but the insurance
If you have any doubts, need advice, or wish to report an issue, the best people to speak to are your local Trading Standards Officers. You can find out who they are via the Trading Standards Institute website at tradingstandards. uk/consumers/support-advice.

Pubs can soon switch water supplier From April 2017, businesses, charities and public sector organisations in England will be able to switch their water supplier. This will include the 50,000 pubs currently operating in Britain. The usage threshold dictates whether water users are able to switch providers, with 5m litres per year the current quota needed to switch. However, from April 2017 this will drop to zero, meaning businesses all across England will be able to save money and negotiate a better service on their water supply. With competition comes the prospect of competitive tariffs, meaning better rates for publicans and an opportunity to cut outgoings.
1. Survey by Edelman Intelligence 2. Financial Times, April 2016
What next? For now, check up on your current requirements when it comes to water usage so you can source suppliers as you would for gas and electrics. The facts From April 2017, businesses, charities and public sector organisations in England will be able to switch water supplier 74% say they are likely to switch supplier1 56% give ‘a better price’ as their reason for wanting to switch1 1.2m more businesses, charities and public sector organisations to be affected2

Prepare your outdoor areas for spring and summer Sunnier skies mean more opportunities to utilise your outside areas. No matter how small, if your space has weathered over the winter period, it’s worth spending time now to make it attractive and welcoming. An appealing outside area will help drive footfall and increase sales of food and drink when the warmer months arrive, as customers will flock to their favourite beer gardens, spending an afternoon and evening soaking up the atmosphere of your pub. • Your furniture needs to be well maintained and comply with retail standards for safety. Don’t forget summer essentials like parasols for hotter days • Now’s the time to get your pub garden ready. Weeding and mowing will ensure it’s tidy and you could consider planting some flowers now ahead of the summer season to add a splash of colour. Hanging baskets are another fantastic option as they can be bought pre-
prepared and create a dramatic effect to make your pub look inviting from the outside • Patio areas are ideal for enjoying a drink and socialising, but they can also present a slip hazard. Do a check for any broken slabs, moss, decks or paving stones that could cause an accident • It’s important to carry out checks on your play equipment like swings and climbing frames to make sure they comply with health and safety regulations.
Check out emarket for deals on outdoor essentials. Alternatively, come along to your nearest eilive 2017 show, where key suppliers will be on hand to offer advice on equipment to make your outdoor areas an attractive and profitable space.

Segmentation success Amy Devenish recently opened The Duck & Willow, her second venture with Ei Publican Partnerships following the success of her first pub, The Gloucester Old Spot. The segmentation tool helped identify the business opportunities for Amy and her team, but her commitment to making The Duck & Willow a success and exploiting gaps in the local market have been fundamental to the success of this second project.”
Amy’s top tips for expansion success Putting back in My first pub was doing well but instead of admiring a growing bank balance, I have reinvested in both pubs for a better long-term turnover. Ride the wave Opening a second business can be a huge drain and requires a lot of enthusiasm. If your pub is a success and you’re confident, ambitious and inspired, ride the momentum and make use of this drive to succeed with a new challenge.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it If something worked well in your first venue, there is no reason not to recreate that. People came back to the Old Spot for its great food, so a focus on a high quality food offer at the Duck & Willow was paramount. Choose your staff wisely Taking on a second pub is time consuming. Being able to rely on staff is crucial as you will need to take on top-level management and won’t be on hand to jump behind the bar.

Pub chosen for blue plaque by town council to commemorate notable resident The Freemasons, Knutsford One of five sites recognised in the town of Knutsford, The Freemasons had a blue plaque installed commemorating a famous resident as part of the Blue Plaque Scheme. Edward Penny, born in 1714, lived on Silk Mill Street and was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts. The aim of helping residents and visitors identify with the history of the town will hopefully lead to more custom at the Freemasons, which was first built as the town’s silk mill in 1754.
