Business news Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC) Companies or licensees may have received a letter from an organisation called the Motion Picture Licensing Company (MPLC) seeking copyright licence payment for televisions operated in their pub estate or individual pub, arising from legal changes as a result of the Murphy case in 2014. Following confusion over what is liable for payment and what is not, BBPA has met with MPLC to clarify the situation and advises the below: he MPLC licence fee does not apply to live 1. T broadcasts. So, if the televisions in your pub(s) only show live TV sport (for example Sky or BT Sport) or rolling news (such as BBC News Channel, Sky News) you do not have to pay this licence fee, subject to point 3 below 2. T he licence does apply to the vast majority of films and television programmes. So, if you show films or TV shows in your pub(s), you must pay this licence fee. This also applies to any televisions in staff areas, breakrooms etc. 3. T o prevent liability for the fee, you must have a mechanism in place to ensure that if you are showing live sport or news only, no films or TV programmes are inadvertently shown to the public. An example would be live broadcast
of horse racing or tennis on terrestrial TV, the broadcast ending and the television showing a non-live programme after the sport. A protocol must be in place to ensure the TV is switched off after the live content has ended. s with Sky and BT, MPLC are using a company 4. A called FACT to check that pubs are not showing their products illegally, so you need to ensure that you have evidence a robust procedure is in place so that the television only shows sport and news, which are not covered by this tariff. 5. F or those who do pay the tariff, please note the square meterage calculation is for the area the TV is in, not the whole pub. BBPA has agreed a pause in MPLC contacting pubs to pay for a licence to give them an opportunity to respond to its questions. They also asked that they make clear in their future communications that pubs that only show sport and/or news and have the ability to ensure film/TV shows are not also shown are therefore not liable for the tariff. Staying vigilant Following the devastating attacks in London and Manchester, businesses need to be more alert than ever for suspicious behaviour. BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds commented; “The appalling attacks must serve as a reminder that it is important for pubs to be vigilant to the threat of terrorism. We do urge pubs to be vigilant against the threat of terrorism. Pubs should monitor advice from the police, brief staff, ad have terrorism as part of their risk assessment of the premises. “Safety should be regularly reviewed, and issues to consider are any weaknesses in a CCTV system, and how you would respond to a threat, such as a suspect package or suspicious item, search plans and evacuation plans. We will be seeking to work with the Metropolitan police and other partners to ensure that the guidance available for pubs bars and restaurants, and our customers, is as effective as it can possibly be, in the face of these evolving threats.” Visit the BBPA website to download its free, risk assessment guidance document, Managing Safety in Pubs & Bars.
Ei Group Debit Card Charges Following the introduction of new EU legislation surrounding interchange rates, which has affected all UK card providers, a charge for all Debit Card payments will be implemented from Monday 31st July 2017. A handling fee of 0.15% will be added to any payment a publican makes to the Group by Debit Card and an invoice raised to their account for the charge incurred. For example, a payment of £1,000 will incur a charge of £1.50 making the total amount to be charged £1,001.50. Charges can be avoided by paying by Direct Debit. Please speak to your relevant Credit Controller.
Tristan O’Hana If an opportunity arises to promote all that is good about the pub and bar industry, embrace it, Tristan O’Hana, Editor of Pub & Bar Magazine, comments. I was working the week after the political parties of the United Kingdom released their manifestos for what proved to be a fascinating General Election. As these manifestos were published, the responses from the trade bodies that represent our industry dropped into my inbox, one by one. You have to hand it to them (the trade bodies, not the political parties) – the speed at which they send out supportive messages that detail reaction and required action is highly impressive. Here are organisations that exist to support you and your businesses – that can only be a good thing. So when we learned of National Pub Fortnight, and the inaugural campaign launched, we thought it was a pretty great initiative. Through a PR campaign, free pint promotions, POS kits and extra operational support, you will be faced with two weeks of busy trading and positive attention around your venues and industry. The more pubs that embrace it, the more successful it will become. If this leads to more customers walking through those pub doors, then it’s mission accomplished.

What is the inspiration behind Purple Moose? As a young man, owner Lawrence Washington spent a lot of time walking in Scotland. A keen home-brewer, he took inspiration from beers of that area and made them his own. Purple Moose’s first brew was on 14 June 2005 and now produces over 1 million pints of beer a year, delighting fans across the world. What are the main ingredients? Cascade hops with the added indulgence of real dried elderflowers. What does it taste like? Incredibly refreshing. The beautiful aroma and sweetness from the real elderflower is balanced perfectly by the hoppy dryness of the Cascade hops. Who will this beer appeal to? For those who love their beers on the hoppy side & with a complexity of flavours, it particularly appeals to the younger drinker and both men and women alike.

What is the inspiration behind Röad Crew? Camerons teamed up with legendary rock band Motörhead to create an exciting new collaboration beer. The name of the brew was chosen from the Motörhead fan favourite ‘(We Are) The Road Crew’, which appears on the 1980s ‘Ace of Spades’ album and was penned as a tribute to the band’s dedicated team of roadies. What are the main ingredients? A combination of pale ale and wheat malts make up this brew, including Galena, Bramling Cross, H. Mandarina Bavaria and Huel Melon hops. What does it taste like? Röad Crew is an American session pale ale packed full of hoppy citrus and blackcurrant flavours, delivering a crisp, refreshing, superior taste to celebrate the spirit of the song and those who inspired it. Who will this beer appeal to? Fans of the band or rock 'n' roll music, but behind the name is a great session pale ale!

Celebrate cider In 2015, on-trade cider sales reached a whopping £1.8bn. Since then, the drink has continued to grow in popularity, with a number of choices for customers including craft, fruit and classic cider options. Each represents a huge opportunity for you as a publican, with cider coming into its own as summer approaches. Aside from offering great tasting cider, if you're planning a festival serving up great food and giving customers a day to remember will encourage them to stay in your pub even longer.

Meet the Maker Meet Martin Thatcher, fourth generation cider maker at Thatchers, talks to deals&ideas magazine about his passion for apples. “When it comes to our ciders, the apple is king at Myrtle Farm. We have been crafting our very special style of cider in Somerset for four generations, since our founder, William Thatcher started to create his delicious blends back in 1904.
At Thatchers’ Myrtle Farm around thirty different varieties of apple are grown for cider. But that’s not all. In our very special Exhibition Orchard, there are 458 apple trees of different varieties, many of which are older, classic varieties. Some of these classic varieties are now being grown in a special trial for our ciders of the future, together with newer varieties such as Gilly, Jane and Angela.
Since then, we have kept on growing our passion for apples – from the orchards we care for through to the ciders we lovingly craft.
From orchard to glass our passion is to bring our customers the very best cider. Understanding apple varieties and how they each bring their special character to a cider is such an important and valuable skill that we’re delighted to share through our range of characterful Thatchers ciders.”

Over my many years within the hospitality industry, I have worked in pubs, hotels, production kitchens, a scampi van – and I’ve even cooked for Kings and Queens! Effective menu planning is essential to make your food business thrive. This month, we’re focussing on autumnal menu planning. The first step to any menu development process is to really understand your customers and what they want when they come to your pub. As we head towards the colder months, this will include heartier, comforting dishes. Create something your customers will find exciting and enticing by using a range of on-trend and locally sourced ingredients on your menu. It could be as simple as serving seasonal veg from the local farm. Although it is good to be different, everyone likes the classics so try to find a balance between the two at this time of year. Pies, stews and richer, gamier meat dishes will be order of the day.

The big breakfast Breakfast is big business, with £76million spent on eating breakfast or brunch out of home everyday1. Pair this with the nation's love of café culture and it becomes important to offer food and drink across different day parts, including hot beverages and early morning menu options to tap into this sizeable revenue stream. “The demand is there,” explains Paul Farr, Head of Food at Ei Group. “You might not necessarily be serving up cereal at 7am, but consider putting your hat in the ring and compete with high street chains by offering dishes more suited to a leisurely breakfast and brunch experience over the weekend. Bottomless brunches have seen a massive surge in popularity, for example. You can serve up a breakfast dish with a glass of prosecco or a bloody mary for a fixed price to tap into the trend. “Monday to Friday, a decent hot beverage offering could be enough to start attracting customers earlier in the day.” Dominic Chapman, Chef Proprietor at The Beehive in White Waltham, agrees. “Serving breakfast and brunch are both excellent ways of increasing revenue in any pub. Pubs are naturally very sociable places, so a sharing option is a really good way to encourage group dining. “We recently worked with tea brand Tetley to create a recipe idea to help pubs break into the breakfast trend. The end result was a sharing brunch platter, which gives customers the option to pick and mix a variety of different items to create a grazing board of breakfast favourites. This could include anything from crispy bacon and locally sourced sausages to avocado and roasted tomatoes.”

Day in the life of... Noel McMahon, Cellar Keeper Of The Year 2016, and 2015 The Nightingale, Wanstead What time does the day start for you? Well, the day starts the same every day of the week – a bright and early start at 6:45 to let in Kasia who helps me with some aspects of running the pub and we’ll kick off the day by sharing a pot of coffee and croissants.
How has the pub culture changed since The Nightingale opened in 1987? The introduction of an amazing portfolio of real ales and a wide selection of wines, plus a huge expansion of the food section have changed the reasons people visit, which, in turn, has an effect on the culture.
What would you say is an average day at The Nightingale? After the morning briefing, I’ll work through staff rotas, till reconciliation and the like. Then the fun begins – we check for upcoming functions and get ready to welcome our first customers. The hours run out very quickly from there on in! After 50 years in the business I can honestly say no two days are the same but I’ve always stuck to the same adage – take it one day at a time.
You’ve been crowned Cellar Keeper of the Year, what’s your best bit of cellar keeping advice or best practice tip? Visit your cellars more often! Treat your cellar and cold room like a food area in terms of hygiene. If you have a visit from an environmental health officer, it will be treated as such. If you were only able to stock one drink in your cellar, what would it be? My heart screams real ale but the businessman in me says lager – you just can’t argue with the sales!

How you can make the most of gaming machines If you are still undecided on whether or not to have gaming machines in your pub, then the following points should help you make an informed decision: • AWP’s (Fruit Machines) take on average £825 per week nationally. This is then split between the gaming operator, the publican and Ei Group with a 20% MGD to be paid • 83% of machine income is from AWP’s, 8% from pool and 9% from other machines (quiz, music etc) • The cost to power a fruit machine is as little as 14p per day for the electricity

Although AWP’s are vital for the majority of income, machines such as pool and jukeboxes can enhance a site’s overall offer.
Maximising profits Already have machines? Try these tips to help boost profits and maximise the income of your gaming offer: • Changing poor performing quiz machines (SWP’s) with a profitable digital AWP machine, such as the King of Games, can increase your machine profit by hundreds of pounds per month • Refilling machines – note acceptors will turn off if the £1 coin ‘hopper’ falls below £125. 90% of cash put into machines is notes! Having an inactive note acceptor can cost hundreds of pounds per week in profit! • Adding an additional fruit machine almost always increases overall machine take. Make sure you’re making the most of the best light of the year by getting a professional photoshoot done.
If you’ve got events planned for the balmy evenings ahead, make sure you get word out in plenty of time.
It’s a worthwhile investment to get 50+ excellent images of your pub and products that you can use all year round. A professional shoot will give you images that have a high-enough resolution to look good on your website and stand out from all the smartphone images on social media.
Your website should be the first place you update, as people who aren’t already customers are most likely to look on Google for inspiration. Then update your social platforms, so nobody can miss it.
Any photographer will tell you natural light is the best for photography, plus your hanging baskets and flowerbeds will be full of colour. Also get chef to cook up a couple of your best dishes to include in the shoot. Far from being a waste of money or ingredients, this is an investment in marketing. The same goes for drinks – if you offer summer cocktails (Pimms anyone?) then get one made up for the shoot. your_pub
Summer food menus and cocktail lists should be uploaded to your website and social channels for maximum impact, highlighting any special offers you have on as well. Who doesn’t love a BBQ menu?
Competitions Think about competitions you can run that are different to the usual ‘like & share’ type we all see in our newsfeed. Publicans & pubs in the spotlight Ei Publican Partnerships competition winner The Selkirk, Tooting James Corbett, his general manager Kerry Pringle and their team were named winners of the year-long Ei Publican Partnerships marketing competition in April this year. Over 100 pubs in the Greater London region competed, with the aim to see who could sell the most beer after receiving top-notch marketing training from Paul Lillicrap. The Selkirk not only sold the most beer, but the team were commended for their community spirit throughout the competition. They were rewarded with 116 gallons of beer!
Loved landlady honoured by customers Horns Tavern, West Norwood In a lovely tribute to the landlady of Horns Tavern, Alison White was honored by her customers with an engraved glass trophy, flowers and £500 in recognition of being the longest serving landlady in West Norwood. She is known as the heart and soul of the pub, which has wonderful Trip Advisor comments about the great atmosphere and friendly staff. After being a successful landlady for 17 years, it’s a fantastic, thoughtful way to show exactly how much Alison means to the community.
New pub defibrillator unveiled The Chestnut, Worcester A community pub run by Colin Robinson, The Chestnut regularly runs initiatives for good causes, such as inviting the homeless and elderly people who live on their own to the pub on Christmas Day each year. The latest cause was to raise money for a defibrillator, which would be positioned in Colin’s pub garden for easy access for the pub and the local community. Having achieved his goal, Colin unveiled his newest addition to The Chestnut on St George’s Day, along with members of the local emergency services and the local MP.

Winnings enable door to door service Cleveland Bay, Redcar It’s fantastic to see publicans being rewarded for giving so much to the community, but when they give their reward to the community too, that’s incredible. Beating 500 other entries, Russ and Sarah Clark from Cleveland Bay have won both the National and Regional prizes in the Community Hero Awards 2016. While that’s great news in itself, with the winnings the couple have bought a seven seater car to act as a free door to door service for elderly and less able customers to help them get out more and socialise.
Music Makeover competition runner up The Anchor Inn, Wingham In April this year, the much-loved community pub in Wingham was announced as runner up in PRS for Music’s national Music Makeover competition, not only being awarded a prestigious music industry award, but receiving an incredible £5,000 to invest in new sound equipment. The Anchor Inn competed with over 300 music pubs and venues in the UK, but the judges were particularly impressed by the diversity of their music events and the way the pub supports touring artists, international acts and local musicians. The prize money will go towards improving ‘The Anchor Arts Centre’, a 100-capacity venue situated in a previously defunct function room in the pub’s building.

Newton Arms, Doncaster Dun Cow, Stevenage Vegas 100, run by Redtooth Poker, is a year-long search to find the top pub poker players in the UK who stand a chance of becoming the next UK Pub Poker Champion by playing against each other at the Vegas 100 National Final in the US!
The Carpenters Arms, Harpenden Last winter, Greene King ran a promotion on its Abbott Ale, with participating pubs entering a prize draw when they bought a 9g cask of the beer. Prizes ranged from branded hand pulls, dual branded tankards and brewery tours. Tony and Maria Hedigan from The Carpenters Arms won the whopping prize of a special behind the scenes brewery tour in Bury with John Bexon, Greene King Master Brewer! As Harpenden’s smallest pub and a loyal Abbott stockist, this was a great opportunity for the team.
The 6th annual Vegas 100 trip takes place between the 25th May and the 2nd June this year, and out of 100 qualifying players flying to Las Vegas to compete, there are two Ei publicansin the mix. Daniel Watson from the Newton Arms in Doncaster and Mark Bates from The Dun Cow in Stevenage will take on the challenge of proving they are next UK Pub Poker Champion – good luck lads!
