BBPA and National Pubwatch partner to create new film The British Beer & Pub Association has collaborated with National Pubwatch to produce an educational film that aims to raise awareness around the laws on serving drunk people and buying drinks for drunk friends. The film, which can be viewed on National Pub Watch YouTube channel, supplements a wider BBPA campaign on serving drunks, which launched in partnership with National Pubwatch and Drinkaware on Global Beer Responsibility Day in September 2016. The campaign uses posters and a suite of infographics that have been deployed across BBPA and Drinkaware social media channels.
“We are delighted to have worked with National Pubwatch to create this new film, which I’m sure will help raise awareness of the law and aid licensees, who can be put in a very difficult position and risk breaking the law if pressured to serve drunk customers. “Serving drunks has long been illegal, and in the vast majority of cases, pubs are safe and responsible venues where drinks are served in a highly supervised environment by well-trained staff.” Steve Baker, Chairman of National Pubwatch, adds: “Many people are unaware that it is an offence to knowingly buy alcohol for someone who is drunk. Lancaster Black Lancaster Brewery
What is the inspiration behind Lancaster Black? Since we first started brewing this beer back in 2008, our aim has been to create a consistent quality stout which would be available all year round.

JAN
SEE 'ON THE DRAY' PAGE 45
What are the main ingredients and what does it taste like? Lancaster Black is dark in colour, rich and velvety with chocolate and licorice characteristics. Ingredients include chocolate malt, oats and barley, and challenger, pear and cascade hops. Who will this beer appeal to? Chocolate lovers! This beer appeals to a true connoisseur of fine dark ale, and anyone who enjoys a full and flavoursome beer.
Grubber
Greene King What is the inspiration behind Grubber? Grubber is brewed especially to celebrate the RBS 6 Nations. Named after the ‘grubber kick’ where the ball rolls and tumbles along the ground rather than through the air, to make it hard for the opposition to pick up. A 4.2% ABV golden ale, it’s a great, refreshing pint to enjoy whilst watching the rugby. What are the main ingredients and what does it taste like? Grubber is a fragrant, fresh and fruity 4.2% ABV golden ale. Brewed with pale malts and classic English hops, Challenger, Pilgrim and First Gold, to make a refreshingly sessionable ale. Who will this beer appeal to? Rugby fans looking to cheer on their team during the 6 weeks of the 6 Nations!

This month's 'On the dray' featured beers on pages 45 and 46 offer distinct characteristics and are perfect for pairing with food:
JANUARY
FEBRUARY
LANCASTER BLACK 4.5% ABV
GREENE KING GRUBBER 4.2% ABV
Try with an on-trend pulled pork sandwich - the sweetness balances out the saltiness of the pork.
Try this with a Thai chicken noodle soup. This dish will pick out the citrus fruits in the beer and complement the spicy flavour of the hops.
HUK/THEAKSTON ATLANTIC RED 4.3% ABV
Pair with an aromatic Moroccan dish, with lamb and apricots. Moroccan spices will complement the cedar wood aromas, and the apricots will pick up the honey in this beer.
HUK/THEAKSTON MASHAM FOUR & TWENTY 4.2% ABV A selection of cheeses will pair wonderfully with this refreshing pale ale, complementing the honeyed flavour and fruity finish whilst cleansing the palate.
ADNAM’S OLD ALE 4.1% ABV
RINGWOOD MAULER 3.9% ABV
A winter warmer beer, designed to match a hearty beef and ale pie. Use some of this beer to make a luscious rich gravy, and serve with creamy mashed potato.
This golden bitter goes well with a rack of ribs, in a sticky tangy barbecue sauce. The dry bitterness complements the sweet sticky glaze on the ribs.
HOP BACK WINTER LIGHTNING 5.5% ABV
WADWORTH DIRTY RUCKER 3.9% ABV
This beer stands up to the richness of haggis and neeps on Burns Night, its spicy aroma and flavour complementing the peppery herbs in haggis.
Perfect with a rib eye steak and peppercorn sauce, the malty tones in the beer will pick out the caramelisation of the steak and the sauce will enhance the spicy peppery notes in the beer.
SKINNERS GTA 3.8% ABV Celebrate Chinese New Year with this Cornish beer paired with poached fresh salmon in a marinade of honey, soy sauce, ginger and five spice.
HOGSBACK FARNHAM WHITEBINE 4.0% ABV
SKINNER’S SPLENDID TACKLE 4.2% ABV Experience the flavours of Cornwall and have a glass of Splendid Tackle with mackerel pate or Cornish crab served on white bread with salty butter.
EXMOOR ANTLER 4.0% ABV
A good cheese board featuring mature cheddar, brie, and stilton served with oat cakes tastes wonderful with this traditional beer.
A full bodied beer with nutty rich fruit flavours goes really well with puddings. Match this with a sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream this Valentine’s Day.
UPHAM SPRINTER 3.8% ABV
ARUNDEL SESSION IPA 4.2% ABV
Another beer which brings out the best in oriental food. Go a bit spicier with the dish, a prawn Kung Bo with chilli, peanuts and crunchy water chestnuts.
This beer is made for spicy food! It’s big, it’s bold, so put it with a lamb jalfrezi or tandoori chicken skewers. The citrus hops will slice through the heat of the chillies.
PERFECT PAIRINGS
Annabel Smith I’m a bit canape-d out now Christmas is under my belt and I’m ready for some serious ‘keep me warm’ January food and beer. There’s no better excuse for manfood than Burns Night on the 25th January. At other times of the year, haggis might not feature highly on your favourite foods, but it’s hearty, warming and filling, and the perfect food to serve with a glass of beer. I love a drop of malt whisky, but I like a plate of haggis, neeps and tatties with a glass of ale. The oats in haggis perfectly complement a huge variety of beer styles. Exmoor Gold and Otter Ale are brilliant at matching the richness of the dish. Often the main meal will be followed by Cranachan, a kind of Scottish trifle. For this I'd choose a light spritzy beer and recommend Ossett’s Silver King or Moorhouse’s Blond Witch to really cleanse the palate in between mouthfuls. It’s also Chinese New Year on the 28th January. I can’t think of a better beer match than Samuel Adams Boston Lager with a big plate of sticky, aromatic spare ribs. This beer has got big caramel notes, and when matched with saucy ribs it almost takes on a cola like quality. I find it hard to name a top ten food match, but if I was pushed, this would definitely be on my favourites list. You can email Annabel your questions direct at beersommelier@enterpriseinns.com or simply tweet the name of a food to @BeerForThat with the hashtag #BeerMatch for an instant reply.

The craft beer category is in significant growth, having attracted legions of new fans in recent years - and craft beer now accounts for 2.5% of beer sales on-trade*. In addition, according to a recent report in the Morning Advertiser, craft beer made up over 10% of the top 100 brands sold on-trade in 2016. But what exactly is craft beer? Tips for wine ranging
Wine is becoming an increasingly important category to pubs, and customers are becoming more knowledgeable about the different varieties available, and as such, pubs need to ensure they are offering a varied selection of tipples to suit a range of taste preferences and occasions.
“Incredibly, recent research showed that 41% of wet-led pubs don’t offer a wine list,* so it's really important to offer a range of wines to suit your type of customer,” explains Kevin Paterson, Marketing Manager at Crown Cellars. “Our advice would be to ensure a balance of red and white, having a New World bias on red wines and accessible sparkling wine choices.”

Scoring the perfect 10 As one of your New Year’s resolutions, why not aim to improve your pub’s digital marketing to grow sales this year and reach more customers? To do this, Inapub recommends that you work with your Regional Manager to achieve “The Perfect 10”. The Perfect 10 is a simple scoring system that will help you maintain your own digital strategy, the results of which should help you get more people through the door and put more cash in the tills. Equipment focus: EPOS EPOS technology has come a long way, with the latest systems able to do so much more than simply tot up a food or bar bill. staff rotas. But just what kind of EPOS system is right for you?
Improved customer experience – pair faster transactions and streamlined ordering processes with reduced waiting time at the bar to keep customers coming back for more. Stock management – monitor your fastest and slower selling stock to improve margins and reduce wastage, whilst helping you manage your ordering processes on both food and drink. Table bookings – essential for pubs with a food offering, many EPOS systems allow you to manage bookings in your pub as well as take orders from the table, with real-time kitchen updates. Simplify staff processes – EPOS systems offer peace of mind, tracking orders and payments electronically to take pressure off your team, reducing mistakes including miscalculation of payments and forgetting to pass an order to the kitchen.

Gazette Pub of the Year Announced The Kings Head, Dursley Martin Harries took over the running of The Kings Head, Dursley, in December 2016 - and just under a year later it has been crowned this year’s Gazette Pub of the Year. Speaking about the award, Martin said: “It means a lot, being new and not knowing a lot of people before I arrived, that we won this competition.”

Doggy dress up The Carters Arms, Wilmslow The team at The Carters Arms, who recently won two awards in the Pubs in Bloom competition, celebrated last weekend – with a fancy dress party for dogs, to raise money for charity Greyhounds in Need. More than 30 dogs came down for the party, and their owners helped to raise £265 for the charity from a fancy dress competition, tombola, ‘doggy lucky dip’, merchandise and a collection tin. The party came two days after Tatton MP George Osborne paid a visit to the pub, where he congratulated publicans Anna and Mikey on their recent Pubs in Bloom success.“It was great to meet Mikey and Anna and see the hard work they have put into making their pub a credit to the town,” he said; “I have always recognised the vital contribution pubs make to local communities.”

Pub raises money for charity The Philadelphia Pub, Tyne and Wear Alan Williams from The Philadelphia Pub organised a 24-hour pool tournament at the establishment, which raised £1,500. Alan and six customers took part in the event, finishing at 7am on the 9th December. The charity, 4Louis, is a foundation that helps support parents who have experienced child bereavement by setting up and funding special bereavement rooms at local hospitals. The charity started at The Philadelphia, initially helping set up a bereavement room at Sunderland hospital, but the idea has since gone national, with hospitals up and down the country creating family bereavement rooms. Well done to Alan and his customers who took part for this very worthy cause.
Disaster at pub’s charity bonfire averted Jack O Mitre, Huddersfield Vandals torched a Scammonden pub’s prepared charity bonfire two nights before the event, with fire fighters being called when the blaze spiralled out of control. Despite the setback, publicans Lauren and Jason Raper pulled out all the stops and sourced new wood for the bonfire, dealt with the emergency services and press, contacted all attendees and assured them the event was still on and set up a fireworks display, all in two days. Friends and neighbours rallied round in support, with wood being delivered from as far as Leeds to make sure the event could still go ahead to raise money for the Forget Me Not children’s hospice.
The Stork listed in ‘Top 6 Cosy Pubs’ The Stork, Conder Green Following an audit by the BBC on coastal pubs, The Stork in Conder Green has been listed as one of the ‘Top 6 Cosy Pubs’ in the UK. Dating back to 1660, this traditional inn features beams and roaring log fires. Just 3½ miles from Lancaster with its castles and museums and located on the estuary of the River Lune where it meets the River Conder, The Stork has become the pub of choice for those wishing to escape the winter chill, and has now been recognised for this by the BBC.
